So, the list of 487 ongoing projects can now officially be reduced to 486 with the launch of this new app for Android. Whilst the 3C app offers Comprehensive Camera Control of all of the parameters of the BlackMagic cameras, there are some users who just need a Bloody Big Button to control the record start/stop so welcome to 3B. Intended for handheld or mounted via a phone adapter on a rig/gimbal/tripod handle, 3B is a simple way to activate and monitor the Record Start/Stop on your Blackmagic camera but also provides a live status view of the following parameters from the camera. Aperture ISO Shutter Angle Temperature Tint White Balance Preset 3B is a single screen, no menu app and features an oversized record button to enable easy activation and the screen provides high visibility confirmation when the camera is in record. No, not without an external recorder. But with the experimental build and 14 Bit Lossless, file sizes are dramatically smaller without any loss in quality. Also if you use MLVFS file system for post, the files open up in Resolve without any transcoding to DNGs. The whole process is really quite simple now. Honestly, all Zeiss lenses, I’ve tested, work great with ML Raw. I’ve tested Rollei Zeiss, Contax Zeiss and the ZF Classics. Although, the newer ZF versions are a bit sharper, I prefer the West German made Rollei Zeiss. I find they have the perfect mix of sharpness, color separation and character with my 5D3. There are so many options for decent 4k & video features these days (at an unbeatable price point) that I'm no longer hoping for Canon to satisfy my requirements. The party is somewhere else now and boy is it raging! I'll always remember Canon fondly. The 5d II was my first proper camera and then the 5D III. Only reason I've still kept hold of it - Great stills, and great video (But only with Magic Lantern). However I shall be selling it soon to raise money for more gear2 points

Agreed. I think Canon are done. The Canon EOS M6 I own now will probably be the last Canon camera I'll ever buy, or own. I was so disappointed when Canon brought out their new EOS M6 Mark II. I was hoping that it would be a natural upgrade path for me. Sure, there's no crop factor in 4K, but there's no DPAF available either and the only mode you get in 4K is 30p. There's no 24p mode in standard HD, only 30p. If you want to shoot in 60p, you have to downgrade to 720p, which is barely HD in this day and age. That's nuts, if you ask me. The EOS RP full-frame camera is similarly crippled and has a horrible 4K crop. And it's overpriced. In Canada, a EOS RP with the 'kit' 24-105mm F4 L-series RF mount lens is $2899.00. That's a lot to ask for a camera that isn't even semi-pro grade and is aimed at dumb consumers who want full-frame but don't know any better. And don't get me started on the EOS R, which is almost $4K in Canadian dollars with the same 'kit' lens. The way Canon want people to do things is to buy one of their crippled stills cameras and then buy one of their XA- or XF-series camcorders if they shoot video and want 4K. Or, buy one of their Cinema EOS cameras like a C100, C200 or C300. Like a lot of people, I'm not made of money and can't afford to do this. I want ONE camera, one that does it all reasonably well, is affordable and won't suck all the cash out of my bank account. I demand good image quality and good autofocus when it's needed. I'm in the market for a new camera and looking to get into pro photography. My M6, nice as it is for purely still photography, won't cut it. I know a new camera won't make me a better photographer. But that's not the point. What I'm looking for is usability and features that will help me get the shots I want. And let me shoot video. The problem, as I see it, is that Canon have too many camera lines chasing too few dollars. And they're engaging in excessive market segmentation where they either withhold features buyers want, or put them just out of reach until they stump up the extra cash to get them, whether they can afford to or not. All in an effort to squeeze still more cash out of their customers. As a consumer, I don't like being forced to do anything, nor do I like the feeling of someone, anyone, trying to extract something from me. My next camera may well be a Sony A7II. Sure, it won't have 4K, but it will have XAVC-S video at 50Mb/s. The quality of video you can get in XAVC-S at that bit rate is pretty much equivalent to the quality you get from downsampling 4K to 1080p. My thinking is that if Canon take another 5 to 10% hit on their revenues and don't smarten up, they'll be exiting the camera business.2 points -
GH5 to Alexa Conversion

I'm not sure yet, there is much to do. I am working at a consistent pace of late; I put in a few 14 hour days last week. Every day, I'm working as efficiently as I can. Yes, that intended HR handling I described has worked with flying colors (pun intended) and the files will be compatible with HR by default (reaching up into the 'super' values to conform them to LogC). Paired with the recent 129x129x129 HDR luts, this will mean superior performance for clipped gamut, especially extreme blue (although these colors are rare in everyday footage) Just yesterday, I finished the new EC component completely. At the heart of it are two 129x luts in sequence - they are 84MB each ? (the final files will be traditional 65x). It turned out that the final critical piece of the puzzle was to recode to handle negative numbers for 'theoretical' color regions when color is hyper saturated (combined with 129x). I am very happy with the performance of this new EC component; it is a perfect match to the primaries of Arri 709 at center, with 2020-like gamut handling at the edges, in a 709 envelope, and the smoothest conversion I have yet made. I think some with an S1 have it. Its not optimized for the S1, but the conversions do take into consideration this theoretical space (no clipping) above the GH5 range. In the case of S1 use, I advise lowering highlights in advance of the conversion (ideally with hue lock as in the pdf) to dial in range. I'm not sure when I'll be able to support the S1; all is resting on my ability to be as efficient with my time as possible.2 points -

I just realized that ffplay (the ffmpeg player) will show histograms, video waveforms and vectorscopes. Ffplay has to be one of the smaller applications that provides such capability. These commands worked on my Linux terminal. Not sure if the syntax changes slightly for the Windows command line. Note that the word "video" in the commands should be replaced with the name of your video file (for example, my_video.mp4). I saw both simpler and more complex versions of these commands when I did a web search. If you try ffplay and have problems, please post your commands, and I will see if I can help.2 points -

Shotcut is open source, and is fairly lightweight and has histogram and waveform (apparently, no RGB parade and no vectorscope). Kdenlive is also open source, and seems to offer all the important scopes. It is probably lightweight, but not as much as Shotcut. Both of these NLEs have Windows versions. There are other open source NLEs and post production applications, but I am not sure what scopes are offered nor if there are Windows versions.2 points -

I can only speak for myself, but slapping on a Sigma Art lens or Canon L is a great option and I probably would have been smarter going that route instead of testing lenses for the past 6 months but whoever said I was smart. However, in the process I learned so much about what was important to me in an image and I realized I really needed less, even if I wanted more. What started as a goal of having 10 good lenses with 3-4 sets amongst them, I realized I only needed half that.1 point

Indeed! Thanks for sharing those clip grabs. The 25mm looks like a scene from the Force Awakens or something. Well Done! I've heard the ZF/ZE are poor wide open and too "clinical" which has kept me away from them. I have used Zeiss Practical PB Mount also which are fantastic. The Zeiss Practica PB Mount 28mm f2.8 is a steal if you find it, just a pain to adapt. It's as sharp, if not sharper than the Contax Zeiss 28mm I used to own and goes for less $120 or less if you can find it attached to a poor camera. Cheers!1 point

Thanks Alex. Contax Zeiss series do work wonders! I used to own the 50 1.4 and was inspired to collect these again after seeing them being used very nicely with the URSA Mini. They really create a cinematic feel/vibe! Cheers1 point

The standard Peli that can just about fit size wise for most carry on allowances is the 1510 but its 6kg before you put anything in it so it can easily fall foul of the 10-15kg allowance. If they then make you put it in the hold then you have a potential new problem because baggage handlers see them and almost see it as a challenge to see if they can break them. There is also the conspicuous nature to them that says "expensive gear in here" which means you need to make sure you get to the baggage carousel first but also marks you out as a bit of a target for theft in a lot of countries. All those factors ended up progressively making them more trouble than they were worth for me as time went on and I stopped using them on most trips. They make decent temporary seats whilst sat in accreditation queues though.1 point

No. Don't think it was ever claimed to be here on EOSHD, but there's enough knowledge there to get by. Shooting with hybrid cameras is enjoyable, and sharing my experiences/work/opinions is something else that's enjoyable. If you want to abandon all sartorial elegance in pursuit of greater camera carrying capacity then I recommend this Domke vest. I used to use one for working events as it is has enough capacity to essentially be a wearable camera bag but used to routinely use it to travel on planes to the events when a few airlines started to get anal about weighing carry on and the standard Peli 1510 took up 30% of the allowance before you put anything in it ! As well as the outside pockets it has inside panels that close with velcro and you can store a ludicrous amount of gear in them. I used to carry a couple of D4s, 14-24mm f2.8, 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 in mine and the vest was still like1 point

Basically, going to "f8" meant that you would be minimizing the technical variables --so you could concentrate on the stuff happening in the world. The things that are actually more important to creating nice images. Lighting, content, composition, etc.1 point -

I agree. I'm curious to hear how you interpret that phrase. One thing I read (that was talking about that phrase) was that at the time most lenses were sharpest at F8, and combined with the typical shooting situation (combinations of what people might shoot, which focal length they would choose to shoot it, and how far away they are likely to be) that F8 was also a practical compromise between having a deep DoF to not have focus issues but was also a combination of daylight and a large enough aperture to not have to have a really long shutter speed with ASA100, 200 (or maybe 400) film in the camera. In that sense I thought the phrase was quite practical for people who wouldn't understand the various tradeoffs that are at play. Obviously there are all kinds of nuances for the experienced photographer to explore but as soon as auto-exposure was widely available I thought the average person could turn on auto-SS, set to F8, and then they'd have pretty good results treating their SLR like a point-and-shoot camera but with MF?1 point -

Thanks so much! Indeed it seems the P6K has a unique personality of its own. I don't know when it'll be ready, but I can say it will be something special. An idea of what I've been kicking around: I rewrote the engine to work at whatever resolution on the fly. I did this to handle unique 97x/129x resolution passes that handle 'super' values beyond floating point 0.0 - 1.0. I've entirely remade the EC component in this larger space, and will be able to offer DCI-P3 variations (massively benefits 709 conversions as well)1 point -
Where exactly? I am not Italian but I can tell you there's no one Italy, but much distinct ones... As much as many places ; ) You instead risk to be killed at the hands of a gang in LA if you go for a walk in certain parts of the town and you pick up a T-shirt to dress with the wrong color. I can assure you this won't happen in any place in Europe as far as I know or had heard about. There's no even (we will) mention mass shootings, go figure... ; -)1 point

People who need 24p can afford cameras that have it. 24p truly is no match for 60 Hz monitors. I would be happy if 24p would one day be gone from internet, but much more likely that I have 120 Hz monitor before that happens and then it does not matter anymore.-1 points
