Panasonic S1H review / hands-on - a true 6K full frame cinema camera
Matias Mayolo and 6 others reacted to Papiskokuji for a topic
Specwise it's a bit disappointing. I'm sure the image out of it is spectacular (like most of the cameras nowadays), the tilting screen is a great evolution, the evf and IBIS are topnotch : sure it's a great camera. But when I read Andrew's article, I can't help remembering his rant about those biased youtubers under Canon's influence, because they were flown under the sun of Hawai, etc. Now I read about Andrew at Panasonic's headquarters, and all I can read is praise about the camera, not even a single remark/critic about anything, eventhough there should be a few, in my humble opinion. I fully understand that when you are invited somewhere, treated well, etc. You don't want to be rude and say bad things about the product you had the chance to shoot with before everybody, even more so when it's a good camera like the S1H seems to be. But come on, no word on NO Full Frame 4K 60p (what would you have said if it had been Sony), codec and bitrate very good but not revolutionary (especially for the added resolution of 6K), no ND, no PDAF (why not, but suddenly AF is not important, it varies from camera to camera...?). I can't even tell the difference with the S1 (I'll have to check it) but the fact you can have manual controls in HFR. I understand your rants, it's good sometimes, it might even be productive if heard by the brands. What I don't like is that it's so variable and relative. You should make an article about Panasonic crippling the S1 not allowing manual controls in HFR. It's as puzzling as canon not giving 24p... And finally, the price. It's very very expansive. A very few people will be able to afford it. 4 000$ is in the realm of a real cinema camera with proper ergonomics, ND filters... That's why I think, you could ask for a bit more from this camera. The Fuji X-T3 has almost the same offering, (in aps-c) with crops between framerates a lot more manageable. The codec's bitrates are even better. There's no IBIS, EVF and build quality not as good, but the price difference is huge. Well that's only my take on it7 points -

I don't understand how specs can be disappointing when there isn't a major camera company doing what the S1H can do in this price range? It's fine if it's not for you, but to act like this isn't a major release that raises the bar is just crazy. Every other company will have to match or beat the Panasonic.6 points -
I went the same route and order the focal reducer with EF mount. My only advice is getting the zhongyi lens turbo ii if you only intend to use manual focus lens. The optic sits a bit deeper than viltrox and MB so it's compatible with a few more m42 lens IE. helios 44-2 or MIR-1. Unless Panasonic's Headquarters is all of a sudden Studio 111 in Hamburg then you're wrong. And although both places begin with an H, Hamburg is not Hawaii. It's a 2 hour train ride from Berlin where I am visiting my girlfriend. The original plan was to go to L.A which would have pissed you off even more. But I chose to spend time with my girlfriend instead. For me this was like visiting a camera shop, and I don't do that unless the camera is worth a visit. If those specs are disappointing in your world you must be an insufferable fucking brat. Disappointing compared to what? Did a RED 8K handout land on your doorstep or something? Did your $4k go towards a stolen Alexa off the back of a van? Some people have been reading EOSHD for longer than 5 minutes and actually realise how far I've gone out of my way to keep the PR influence over this blog as low as possible, and I'll point you to all those adverts I don't have.... Anywhere. No sponsors, no paid ads, no content paid for and no shoots 'embellished' with Hawaiian scenery or Canon topless models. But yeah, I'll take your word for it... The image is spectacular but the specs disappointing. The 5m dot EVF and 5 axis IBIS are top notch but the specs still disappointing. The tilting screen is a great evolution but still your disappointment overwhelms you. Maybe you are better off using that "real cinema camera instead", you know, the one with the "proper ergonomics", that shoots 6K full frame for $4000, with a built in ND, a 5 million dot EVF and IBIS. ?3 points -
The best new camera to purchase in 2018!
TrueIndigo and 2 others reacted to kye for a topic
Just imagine the title of the thread said "2019" instead of 2018 and just re-read it. My advice - upgrade your skills with your existing camera. You get: an upgrade that is with you for life, not just for another year or two to feel good about yourself and like things are possible that maybe you didn't think were to shift your thinking that you can find solutions within yourself rather than just buying solutions to your problems I plan to celebrate all the new cameras by setting up a test shoot with my camera under the best conditions I possibly can, and then bringing the footage into Resolve and trying to match the skin tones from a high-end colourists showreel. This is partly to learn something about colour grading, partly to learn more about how to best use my existing camera, and partly to remind me that truly amazing footage can be created with equipment I already have and to not get drawn into the showreels of the new equipment. What would you like to learn?3 points -

Well I was recording 6K RAW to one today on my Pocket 6K. UHS-II is pretty nippy. And with XQD / CFast it's pretty much a given... There is no need for an external brick, wobbly cable or 2.5" SSD in 2019. What the fuck they are doing bothering with sending RAW over HDMI when they have a high-speed USB C connector is beyond me.... Panasonic and Nikon seem to really want to sell a boat load of Atomos recorders for Jeromy! Good deal for him! But is it for us? Big bulky battery, expensive screen, dated media, dated connector and all this trouble for something which should already be internal. Anyway, what matters is if it's real RAW, how the image compares to 10bit 422 internal and whether the workflow holds up... Otherwise, may as well sell the Pocket 6K, get rid of the Z6, sell the Atomos Ninja V, and shoot with the S1H internal or an X-T30 if you are feeling more thrifty.2 points -
Just took delivery of this(brand new Sigma 14-24 f2.8 for l-mount). I needed a convenient wide angle for landscape, astro and aurora photo, and wild field "documentary" plan for video. The growing thread (for the Sony mount version) on the fredmiranda forum suggests this is one of the most spectacular wide angle lens. Some guys compare it to their Zeiss prime, others ditch their Sony G. Can't wait to try it. Oh, and "only", 795gr... well balanced with the S1.2 points

Add to the shortcomings: same sensor, same terrible rolling shutter, probably same poor pixel binned 120fps quality as well and Sony's lovely "colour" If A6600 is a flagship they should be embarrassed. 16-55 F2.8... Wow they finally got round to it. Shame it doesn't match the Samsung effort of 5 years ago though. That was F2.0-F2.8! Sony = new Canon.2 points -

I don't have an F8 but the Pocket 4K does jam sync to LTC. Just to check that the BNC converter cables aren't an issue, you can test it like I've set it up here with a free LTC app and a simple 3.5mm stereo jack to jack cable. Make sure you then press the screen where the timecode is displayed (as it defaults to showing record time so should be 00:00:00:00) and if the camera is receiving a valid signal the EXT and TC indicators should light up and it should start displaying the incoming timecode. If they don't light up, you can monitor the signal by selecting the 3.5mm mic input as the source in the Audio setup to make sure its getting in and tweak the level at the phone end if needed. If it works in that test with a phone then at least you'll know the camera end is setup correctly and then you can start troubleshooting the F8/BNC converter end.2 points

If the Sony 16-55mm f2.8 at least had stabilization, they would have sold one to every FS5 and FS7 owner out there - awesome lens less than 500-grams, but without stabilization, it becomes way less useful for those cameras. Would much rather use the 24-105mm f4 from Canon/Sigma with a speedbooster and also have a greater range + stabilization. Since I greatly dislike Sony's color and image, I'm happy to see them stumbling. Hopefully more money goes to Panasonic, Sigma, and Fuji, all three which seem to be at least trying to make innovative and updated products.1 point -

Yes. I saw a vlogger include it in a vlog once when there was a meetup of vloggers and they got someone else doing the focus trick in the background, so they explained it. You put the camera in AF-S hold the camera up to your face, hold out your arm and flip your hand up (like you're indicating to stop a car) and do a single focus on the back of your hand. Then set the camera to MF and it will keep the focus you set from this procedure. The vloggers were all Sony people and they all laughed that they do this secretly to make sure they're kept in focus. Because they're Sony users and don't have flip screens they can't see what they're shooting, so basically put on a wide angle lens and point it at themselves and over time learn what the composition is like. They go MF because if you can't compose you don't know what you're pointing the camera at and you also don't know what's in focus and what isn't. Sony FTW!!1 point -
works been a bit slow which has constrained my purchases of late. I have bought a few cheaper items like some uv filters and a cheap hood for the tokina 28-70 some smaller step up rings for a project i have in mind but more about them once they turn up. i did get a hoya digital filter for the tokina. The interesting thing about that was i found a lens rental review on 21 different protective filters from 2017, some being uv, i guess most of you would have seen it however it was new to me. there's a link to it here for those that want to peruse it. https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/06/the-comprehensive-ranking-of-the-major-uv-filters-on-the-market/ ots. i probably need some time with full sun to compare filter verse non filter. Why can’t they add this the the Gh5s via firmware? If they are sitting in one spot, yes. Why would you use AF? Besides autofocus being able to see yourself in the screen helps with framing. AF won’t save your poorly framed vlogging.1 point -
im close to puling the pin on a speed booster originally i was going to buy one to fit the tokina 28-70 in nikon mount. but thinking about it further im probably better of getting one in ef mount. that way pretty much everything can be adapted via the ef mount. I had this problem with the xc10. They have been screwing people around since long before this on the 24p issue. But I am sure that canon know more than the likes of Nolan and Scorsese - why would they go to the trouble of pushing a filmmaker mode on the public when you can just shoot 30p - https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20190827005822/en/UHD-Alliance-Brings-Filmmakers-CE-Companies-Hollywood "Filmmaker Mode will allow viewers to enjoy a more cinematic experience on their UHD TVs when watching movies by disabling all post-processing (e.g. motion smoothing, etc.) so the movie or television show is displayed as it was intended by the filmmaker, preserving the correct aspect ratios, colors and frame rates."1 point

I've been there variously as an exhibitor, journalist and a visitor on and off for the past 20 odd years. Its never exactly been a riveting experience in any of those capacities to be honest. If you can get there for the day and don't have to deal with the eye watering hotel prices in Amsterdam for the duration its on then its just about worth visiting but unless you're into broadcast/transmission stuff there's probably not enough to really justify doing two days there. I'll be going again this year though obviously1 point

All the different features that Panasonic have put into this camera shows that they know what they are doing - not to mention all of the beefy codecs, frame rates, resolutions, bit-rates, etc. Plus the best IBIS in the game and now some of the finest lenses (their 50mm f1.4 is silly sharp and I'm guessing the 24-70mm f2.8 will be so as well). And with native Panasonic lenses on the S1, the AF is plenty good for many situations. Somehow, people still say Sony is better with its 8-bit 420 100mbps codec and horrid colors. I really don't get it.1 point -

Shoot everything at 1080p. Don't shoot yourself in the foot with 4K. Although I do like shooting ceremonies at 4K for the post crop. Canon skin tones are the best. Even a used 70d would be better than Sony IMO. The C100 mk1 and 2 are the best cameras for weddings IMO. I've shot a few recently with C100 mk1 and my 1DC and it's super nice. Here's a teaser I did with 1DC/ C100 combo: You MUST MUST MUST remember that wedding films are CONSUMER PRODUCTS. DONT EVER FORGET THIS. THIS IS 6 years of experience and over 300 weddings shot of experience talking to you. These people aren't professional filmmakers. They aren't producers. They aren't film snobs. All they want is pretty shots of them on their big day. If you shot it all with a t2i and a 50mm 1.8 they would love it because it looks "cinematic". Don't get caught up with the gear when it comes to shooting weddings. That's the biggest waste of time and money. The couples simply don't give a shit. I hope you enjoy it. Weddings are a fantastic way to get lots of experience and become a ninja shooter1 point
