  2. We shot this as a two man crew over two weeks in Georgia. Was a whirlwind shoot driving up mountains to track down nomadic sheep herders and trying to get access to shoot in Orthodox churches and dance clubs. This is what we came up with.. would love to hear what everyone thinks.. we took a different direction on this piece than we normally do.

  3. I don't know what they're doing exactly, but they're done by now. Even if they would come out with some kind of competition to the new BMPCC 6K, the S1h or the incoming (I hope) a7sIII, they would just cripple it in some way that the others don't, for color science's sake. BMPCC fills so much tasks, from trad run&gun to streaming cameras, A7sii still reigns as the king of low light, and the S1h is basically everything a photographer/videographer has ever wished for. What's left for Canon in this segment? What could they get out of it? I guess the only way they could profit from this segment now would be to release some kind of Amira shoulder-style docu/broadcast camera at a decent price. But they'll never do that.

  4. I think the C200 looked the best in the studio shot... the BM cameras made the girl look sickly and two-dimensional in comparison. I even preferred the C200 over the Red Helium (I hope I don’t get a cease and desist order). With that being said, I still believe Canon is making a huge mistake taking 24p out of their “lower” tiered cameras... regardless of their reason for doing it. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter, Canon does not offer an inexpensive camera that I am interested in, so if/when I am in the market for such a camera, I will look to another brand.

  6. Awesome. Watched the trailer first without sound, then with sound. Both worked equally well.

  8. You damn right, they didn't. It was a deliberate act to cripple the camera as part of their increasingly aggressive segmentation game (forcing certain people looking for certain features to look at more expensive options; which is a very business oriented strategy which of course isn't a very good sign of goodwill and might alienate more people than it attracts). Which is a very reasonable and rational explanation. A much better one than including 24p because implementing so would make the camera too costly (again, we've seen cameras getting 24p added through a firmware update, long after it was sold to the customer!). The entry level Rebel T7 does 1080p24. You know which Canon camera does 4K24p? The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS, lol. A consumer budget compactcamera. So stop all this nonsense about costs or technical implementation, it's all bogus. They did it on purpose and it was not to cut down on costs of the camera itself, it was in the hopes that due to leaving it out it would generate more camera sales in higher tier products. Which is a shame, because no other camera company is leaving out something basic as 24p! Canon blew up after the 5DmkII and 550D/T2i. Then the whole Magic Lantern years trying to make them more into what Panasonic was doing as a company themselves with the GH-range, unlocking more potential, giving its users more quality and features. Yet Canon as a company? It's swinging that 'cripple hammer'. Why do you do it? What good have they really done after the 5DmkII? They started the whole HDSLR revolution if you will and now they're the ones least eager to keep up with it (it's like they managed to pull the Excalibur sword out... and then sold it for its precious metals). Just makes me puke. ?

  9. Hi, the video is from February 2018 so I used the build that was available at that particular time. The video description mentions that I used 12 bit lossless recording, so it would have been one of the experimental builds from the main website (not from the forum) - this was a few months before Danne started doing the SD overclock hack for this camera. Given that the resolution was 1392x1028 I'm guessing I was using 'movie crop mode' which gives you a full realtime view of what's being shot, the preview is zoomed in 3x in relation to the whole sensor in that particular mode (rather than 5x). The Schneider lens was mounted to the camera with a C-mount to EF-M mount adapter. That's good to know! I only ever used the 5D mkII without magic lantern (back in 2011) - didn't realise there was less moire and aliasing than when shooting with the regular video mode.

  10. I have to admit that I am not familiar of the work of the man, but there is a tendency to exaggerate the abilities of people on youtube, while dozens of thousands of professionals possess a lot more knowledge. It used to be "if there is on tv.." now it is "if there is on youtube.." I do not use any social media so I wasn't aware, but I know now, I agree, and I apologize for bringing it in. I told you, it was a very hard working week, and the previous one was also, and the next one will be! Some of the reasons I am going to invest on the P4K are your great ideas, constructions and software. You are making the Pocket cameras a lot more user friendly, which aren't very much. I still can't find the 6K more appealing than the 4K though..!!

  11. First off, the C200, C300 MK2, are work horse cameras. You can literally shoot entire documentary with a bare bones package. The reliability, form factor, ND filters and XLR ports make things so easy. The batteries run for literally 4/5 hours. It is ridiculously easy to color grade. The skin tones have a softness and smoothness that the pocket just does not produce. Also, this guy is a youtube review guy. The pocket 4k clips so damn hard. If you clip highlights, it looks terrible. His example shots are literally the best case scenario. He also keeps talking about "how accurate the green in the trees are." To be honest, the trees look like Sony green, with lots of yellow. Kind of sickly. Sharper is not better. That pocket is looking harsh in comparison. It almost looks like the C200 has an extra scrim up to soften the light. The forehead and cheeks have this harshness in the highlights that literally does not exist with the C200.

  12. Yep. That's been going on for years -- even before Red existed. One can safely assume that the above-the-line folks are clueless and cheap, when, at the outset, they stipulate that a DP must own a certain brand of camera. One exception to this assumption is that they might be trying to match previous footage. However, in that case, they are just cheap and one wonders what happened to the original DP. The trailer (thanks, @PannySVHS!) is reminiscent of the inexpensively made, slipshod "Now" films of the mid/late 1960s. Very cool! Not sure why he didn't just an use an off-the-shelf developer, stop bath and fixer.

  17. I am really hoping for a micro 4/3 version of the Pocket 6k as the Pocket 6k has about 25% more resolution at the same size sensor crop vs the Pocket 4k. I would not need a Pocket 4k for M4/3 lens, I would just use the Pocket 6k M4/3. At some point, hopefully sooner rather than later, Blackmagic will offer this as I believe their is lots of demand for it and the engineering seems like it would be nearly trivial.1 Along with M4/3 mount, in camera scaling using the super scale algorithm from Resolve would allow me to crop based on the lens' image circle and output, 6k, 4k or 2k. This would cover all of my lens and output file size requirements, basically making one camera to rule them all.

  18. Well isn't 6k only 19.4MP? We have plenty of cameras that shoot 24, 30, 42, 61 even the 100MP Fuji. So surely resolving 6k or even 8k (33.2MP) is not a hugh issues with modern lenses. With that in mind I would comfortably say virtually any modern lens, from any of the major players should readily resolve the 19.4 megapixels needed for 6k.

  20. Funny. Actually it was Fujifilm that introduced eye AF to video a year ago with the X-T3. So yes, other cameras can do that I don't think this post was about a pros and cons list. It was about two things: 1. Sony not introducing new hardware like a new, higher performing sensor 2. Sony not doing anything new with it's codecs. XAVC-S has been out like what? 6 years? Back that it was state of the art. But at the moment, Sony is lagging behind by quite a bit. Those things need to be pointed out. It's like a kick in the a**. Otherwise Sony might become like Canon and only introduce marginal updates, maybe even removing features.

  23. I'm in the U.S., so my knowledge is based on our tax laws. First, I'd talk to a tax accountant and setup a LLC so your personal property is separate from your business. Second the IRS says deductible expenses must be ordinary (something typically used in that field, so cameras yes, mountain bikes no) and necessary. Eating is not a business expense, lunch with clients is different. For gear you can follow a depreciation schedule. For vehicle related expenses track mileage religiously, and then you can deduct a portion of maintenance expenses along with mileage. Don't see how Netflix or a video game can be classified as a business expense, but a percentage of your utilities, internet service, house payment and so on - yes. I'm also not a fan of making myself a target for an audit, so I stick to what can clearly be defined as a business expense. Also, the IRS - assuming you're American based on your location - has everything laid out in glorious government confusion here: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/deducting-business-expenses Chris

  24. I was expecting this post!!! Thanks Andrew! EOSHD is the only website to acknowledge that the two cameras have nothing new, but they are a rebadged mashup of the previous APS-C cameras, they just added a flip screen, HLG, autofocus and processor from the A6400 and only the batteries from the A73 series. Otherwise, pure shit. All of the other websites praising the new battery, the AF speed, come on, it's the same camera. I changed from Sony to Fuji because I needed to shot lots of 1080 50p (I live in a PAL country) and I was tired of the constant decreasing quality of the 1080p on Sony APS-C cameras, it's a REAL shit, It's canon-like shit, it has no detail, lots of moire and aliasing, and not even gonna talk about slow-mo which is even worse. The 1080p quality started to decrease from the A6300, which is worse than the A6000. As you can check out here, I had both and it's true. I bought the X-T30, because I was a bit short of money.. And I'm more than happy, the colors are awesome, you can get a nice baked in color if you want or a really flat image with lots of information without having to use F-log, you have way less rolling shutter, you have plenty of options for dynamic range, it has a beautifully detailed 1080p image, and from that an almost unchanged 1080p 100-120fps. You could just shoot everything in 100fps that you wouldn't notice the difference, but you have no audio ?‍♂️ . You can shoot with an HDMI monitor and you DON'T loose you LCD scree image, none of the Sony can do that. The only thing I miss from Sony is the AF on video... that is something that Fuji is bit behind, you got less options, it's not as reliable, for tracking a face it's fine, other things, not as much as Sony. You can check out video resolution in here, it's a great tool to know the resolving power of cameras in different resolutions. It's for sharpness only, you can't check other features like iso, dynamic range, etc. But it's good enough and quite reliable. https://***URL removed***/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr29_0=sony_a6300&attr29_1=fujifilm_xt30&attr72_0=1080&attr72_1=1080&normalization=full&widget=636&x=-0.04440091689095804&y=0.2513405105351813

  27. Hallo, thank you very much! I think the magic really comes from the lens. The Fujinon 12.5mm 1.4. It does not quiet cover the full 16 to 9 image on the Lumix. I shot this on the G6. Grading and grain in Davinci, any other characteristics of the image come from the beautiful location, the light and the lens. The whole piece was shot in a cinema verité approach, with hardly any shots posed for the camera. I hopefully get around doing some more of these personal vignettes this year. I will see. For this piece it was the right energy and the right moment in time and right kinda lightning:)

  28. Even if the licencing fees argument were true, it would actually make Canon look worse, not better. Because if Pentax, who have a far smaller share of the market and whose video quality has consistently been an absolute joke since the day they added it, are willing to shell out the fees to enable their DSLRs to support 24p, what possible excuse could Canon have for not doing the same?

  30. I think that the reason Sony is showing no real love for APSC is because it wants its customers to migrate to FF (sensor manufacturer wants customers to buy larger sensors!!) This is where Sony has its competitive advantage - the A7r4 is two generations ahead of what Canon and Nikon offers (for stills) - as well as the widest lens offerings. So look at pretty much any a6600 review and it says - dont but it, buy the A7iii. Of course they will lose dedicated apsc enthusiasts to Fuji but I guess that is just collateral damage. There has to be a question of how dedicated Sony really is to the video market (beyond providing the basics.) Their focus definitely seems to be on the 'bigger' stills picture. I guess we will find out if when we get the A7siii. In the longer run, I think Sony will find it difficult to compete with Panasonic in video - simply because Panasonic focused on 'video'...

  31. I’d hold off on canon apsc as their sensors are technically smaller than Sony and Fuji apsc so the size difference between it and what you have isn’t really that huge. Especially once the canon crops in (if it does in 4K) i imagine even a speed booster on ur current body would generate better imagery

  32. Thanks much for your feedback Andrew on this just announced M6-Mark-II. I was about to get rid of my existing (and very humble) Olympus E-M10 Mark-III and 'upgrade' to this M6 Mark-III as my first foray into the Canon world. I thought, double the megapixels, a larger sensor (m4/3 vs APS-C) DPAF vs CDAF only, etc. But now, your insightfulness has created pause to rethink matters. Now, I am thinking to either wait for the upcoming Olympus E-M5 Mark-III and stick with M4/3, or to go full frame and consider A7-III et el, Or perhaps I should venture into the Fuji camp and consider X-T3/X-T30, albeit no IBIS (I think) and also owning no Fuji lenses. I tend to shy away from full frame because of the added weight, size, and expense for lenses, and at this point in life (age) I really like the relative compactness of the current Olympus or this new M6-Mark-II. I like the ergonomics and control layout of the Olympus but the menu system is another story!. But size alone is surely not the only factor. Perhaps the all around compromise might be the Fuji X-T3 / X-T30 but again, no lenses. Alternatively, just wait and see what Olympus produces with the upcoming E-M5-Mark III. It is rumored to minimally have the capable sensor of the current E-M1-MKII but with new processor. Anyway, again, thanks for the heads up info on the shortcomings of the M6 Mark-II 4K specifications not being true 4K. It's definitely food-for-thought. Sheesh! Even my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 gives me 4K @ 60fps! ... decisions, decisions, confusion! (^J^)

Yes exactly, what do you know? "Canon lose money on a C200" HAHA We are officially living in an era of world history where the majority of people unashamedly, knowingly speaking total shit to one-another without embarrassment, with no evidence or research to back it up, just pure uneducated or misinformed conjecture.... And it makes them feel good about themselves. It's perverse. No wonder our politics is going down hill rapidly.

The canon t1i saves even more money. It had an all plastic body PLUS only 720p at 24fps, which must have been substantially more cost effective than to compress 1080p at 24 frames every second. Of coarse canon decided to take a risk and lose some money in order to be innovative once again, so they added 1080p 24 to the t2i. Sadly this cost canon so much money that they nearly went bankrupt, and so they unfortunately had to remove 24p from the M6 II. Then scientists discovered that the earth isn’t round, nor flat, but actually is shaped like an octagon. We just don’t realize this because alien nebula waves in the earth’s atmosphere inject pathogens into our brain to trick us into believing this false view of a round or flat earth.

The small hole is actually to reduce the amount of material required, thus saving 0.23 cents/unit on manufacturing costs. It's the compromise they made in order to afford the 24p license.

  38. Just took delivery of this(brand new Sigma 14-24 f2.8 for l-mount). I needed a convenient wide angle for landscape, astro and aurora photo, and wild field "documentary" plan for video. The growing thread (for the Sony mount version) on the fredmiranda forum suggests this is one of the most spectacular wide angle lens. Some guys compare it to their Zeiss prime, others ditch their Sony G. Can't wait to try it. Oh, and "only", 795gr... well balanced with the S1.

No, not without an external recorder. But with the experimental build and 14 Bit Lossless, file sizes are dramatically smaller without any loss in quality. Also if you use MLVFS file system for post, the files open up in Resolve without any transcoding to DNGs. The whole process is really quite simple now. Honestly, all Zeiss lenses, I’ve tested, work great with ML Raw. I’ve tested Rollei Zeiss, Contax Zeiss and the ZF Classics. Although, the newer ZF versions are a bit sharper, I prefer the West German made Rollei Zeiss. I find they have the perfect mix of sharpness, color separation and character with my 5D3. Here’s a frame from the 50mm 1.8... And here’s a frame from the 25mm 2.8...

  41. I was being sarcastic and irreverent! I DO believe Cannon has executives that are completely BLIND to what is happening in the industry today. They are leaning heavily on their logo's historic reputation right now. I dont think they truly know that their logo's gas is running out! Cannon is turning into a dinosaur right under their own noses! I think that Cannon is doing exactly what BlackBerry did that caused their great fall. Arrogant....absolutely arrogant in every way. They will look back at themselves 5 years from now and clearly see how their own attitude ruined them.

  42. The small orange one (the PBC) which won't be orange has an expansion module with five buttons and a small wheel. It communicates to the PBC by bluetooth so you can split them if you want or attach into one controller. So you can have the PBC on top of the camera for example and the expander on a handle. Its a lot cooler than I'm making it sound. But of course. Probably
