  2. I think the C200 looked the best in the studio shot... the BM cameras made the girl look sickly and two-dimensional in comparison. I even preferred the C200 over the Red Helium (I hope I don’t get a cease and desist order). With that being said, I still believe Canon is making a huge mistake taking 24p out of their “lower” tiered cameras... regardless of their reason for doing it. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter, Canon does not offer an inexpensive camera that I am interested in, so if/when I am in the market for such a camera, I will look to another brand.

  3. Another guy who needs reminding of why EOSHD started... suddenly cost wasn't a barrier to entry any more, people could pick up a GH1 or 5D Mark II and shoot cinematic images for cheap. Isn't that what's great about the Pocket 6K? If the image stands up head and shoulders (even above) C200 RAW but costs FAR less, with arguably a better RAW codec (and internal ProRes) to boot... That is exciting. Then again it's no surprise to long-time EOSHD members! I remember comparing the C300 early on (when pros were gushing over it) with the Samsung NX1 when it first came out. The 4K from the NX1 beat the shit out of the C300's image quality - yes, in terms of skintones and colour too. You sure can shoot a documentary bare bones with some cameras more easily than others... Pick up a GH5 for instance, and you can shoot bare bones better than with a C200 thanks to the stabilisation and smaller size.

  5. My advice is keep what you currently have. Buy a good video head tripod/monopod, a mic and lavalier mics, a cheap drone, and some video lights. A gimbal if you want to go all out. That should cover all your bases at first. If you need to upgrade your cameras go from there. I think soon Canon will be forced to have Full Frame 4k in their morrorless bodies by competition so I would not buy a high end body from them right now. If you want to get a cheap video oriented body for your lenses as a stopgap I would go for the new 90D. EDIT: Also make sure your computer and storage are good enough to edit and store everything!

  6. lol the Canon excuses. The c200’s slow motion is pretty bad compared to what’s available from other DSLMs! If I pay 6-7k for the c200 pkg, the DPAF won’t be enabled with the 120fps. What’s so great about DPAF if you can’t use it at will? C100mkii... DPAF can’t be used throughout the whole sensor, unless you’re using an USM lens, and even then it’s the slowest of the bunch. C300 doesn’t have slow motion. The only camera with decent slow motion is the 1dxmkii, but you need to use MotionJpeg... Ugh. They don’t have the best color science. The video is hella mushy.

  7. Amen. A lot of people rave about sharpness, but that is the exact opposite of what I look for in an image. It’s one reason I’ve enjoyed shooting on Canon over Sony (despite the disappointing lack of features in their lower tier cameras).

  8. First off, the C200, C300 MK2, are work horse cameras. You can literally shoot entire documentary with a bare bones package. The reliability, form factor, ND filters and XLR ports make things so easy. The batteries run for literally 4/5 hours. It is ridiculously easy to color grade. The skin tones have a softness and smoothness that the pocket just does not produce. Also, this guy is a youtube review guy. The pocket 4k clips so damn hard. If you clip highlights, it looks terrible. His example shots are literally the best case scenario. He also keeps talking about "how accurate the green in the trees are." To be honest, the trees look like Sony green, with lots of yellow. Kind of sickly. Sharper is not better. That pocket is looking harsh in comparison. It almost looks like the C200 has an extra scrim up to soften the light. The forehead and cheeks have this harshness in the highlights that literally does not exist with the C200.

  10. We shot this as a two man crew over two weeks in Georgia. Was a whirlwind shoot driving up mountains to track down nomadic sheep herders and trying to get access to shoot in Orthodox churches and dance clubs. This is what we came up with.. would love to hear what everyone thinks.. we took a different direction on this piece than we normally do.

  11. Also explains why there products are littered with bugs. Doubt they even have a QA team over there The way people go on like canon cameras shoots .3gp 240p quality. Never understood people who's say canon footage is unusable.. Dont get me wrong there are other competitors pushing the boundaries for video, most vlog content I come across on YouTube are mostly shot on canon. This dslr video market is smaller and more fickle than we think..

  12. Blackmagic is not a huge company. Not even close. Panasonic has 273,358 employees. Canon has 197,673 employees. Sony has 117,300 employees. Fujifilm has 79,000 employees. Nikon has 25,729 employees. Blackmagic has 372 employees.

  13. From my understanding, color science and video codec are part of the story of Canon’s failure. There were several more fatal mistakes being made by Canon itself in the past five years. Before Sony released the first 4K camera A7S, Canon occupied most of the video shooting marketing because most of the photographers, especially in wedding photography sector wanted to manage the equipment easier thus they purchase all Canon stuffs from bodies to wide range of EF lenses. This was the good old day of Full HD movie that was still adequate for the producers facing the average consumer market. Canon reserved the color profile and 4K exclusively for the Cinema EOS and lured the producers to buy the expensive movie body which could utilize their EF lenses to “save” money from buying extra filmmaking lenses. In certain sense, Canon slowed down its step to improve the video technology because they believed 4K were for the professional and wouldn’t be the mainstream in the coming five years. And the users’ loyalty to EF lenses will help it maintained the sales of camera body. However, Sony thought differently and tried to be the bad boy to ruin the lenses-monopolization of Canon by using the trick – the EF to E-mount adapter. When Sony A7S entered the market all wedding photographers and filmmakers just went crazy with the most economic 4K solution at that period. The adapter helped Sony to buy time and boost sales during the days without enough good choices of E-mount lenses. Canon couldn’t do anything because the patent of EF mount was already expired which meant it was going to be exploited by other camera brands. This smart move ruined the plan of Canon entirely but it still did not want to face the truth that 4K should be getting cheaper and more popular in the following years. Instead of releasing 4K in the EOS DSLR line, it launched the stupid XC10 as responding to the need of 4K in the prosumer market. The situation getting worse when more brands and various kind of equipment penetrated the market such as GoPro 4 Black, DJI Inspire 1, iPhone 6S, etc. I still remember my first 4K camera was LG G4 in 2015! But even worse that actually, Canon’s technology of CMOS hasn’t been improved much after 5D mark II. The merely increased pixels and boring ergonomic design just losing all its charm . The only reason of buying Canon is just because the users are photojournalists who need weather and dust sealing in the tough environment. Sony (with EF lenses), GoPro, DJI and iPhone take its place in video taking position. Otherwise, there are not much reason to have DSLR with lame video spec. EOS m6 mark II may be the new hope. But what Canon should do that is releasing more power in color profiles and in body RAW recording. Otherwise, a little Sony RX100 mk VII is still able to blow it away. Dinosaur should die anyway but usually slowly.

No you don't. I'm not trying to compare the framing or make the same shot. I put the same lens on 2 different camera's on the DOF calculator at the same distance. And it should show that the DOF is the same. At least, that's what I thought. It doesn't matter that the framing isn't the same. A 70mm is a 70mm. It doesnt matter if you mount it on a full frame camera or on a banana. A crop sensor is basically the same as cropping in post and then blowing the image up to the same size as it would have been on the full frame camera. It doesn't change any other stuff, besides that you have a narrower FOV. That alone doesn't change the DOF. The DOF will only change once you start zooming in / out or moving. Which the DOF calculator doesnt take into account and is not what I'm asking here.

  15. No, Sony is really great at marketing and feeding the YouTube hype machine. They just don’t have something ready yet. Sony likes to push numbers. It’s going to be an 8K camera with 4k60p WITH a crop of some sort. My guess is they don’t want to compromise on form factor. Panasonic just made it work. If they ever figure out their AF I wouldn’t buy any other camera as they get ALOT right in there gear.
    1 point
  16. ...And I think this why Sony is slowly overtaking them. I honestly think Canon is just riding the consumer camera train with their brand and logo as the ticket for as long as possible with almost zero investment because there is not much profits in it anymore. When that train loses steam they will fall back on their camera patents and lens designs and license those. I find it hard to believe there is zero foresight at the management of this company. And don’t tell me it’s a Japanese thing. Other Japanese camera companies seem to get it.

  17. I second what @Geoff CB said. I figure you have a few options: Keep your current gear. It's a pain with crop factors and downscaling, but you get Canon colours, DPAF, and it's the cheapest option. Get a Canon cine camera. You can use your lenses, have DPAF, but crop factor is an issue. Buy something from another brand that will record nice 1080p and you can use your existing lenses (maybe via adapters). None of these will be both FF and have good AF. Buy a completely new system. You'll get something with good AF (Sony is pretty good) and you can get glass to match, but it's a huge cost and a PITA to run two systems. Dealing with crop factors doesn't sound so bad now does it? Seriously, use what you have and use the time to figure out how you work and what you need, and also give the industry time to release more FF cameras with good video AF. The industry is just starting to really go FF so if you can wait then you'll be much better off.

Still working on the P4K. Though with the P4K, its 'EC2.0' that is the focus. Everything has been revised and dialed in. That new standard foundation will be able to be brought to new cameras much more efficiently once out Not yet; you can expect things to move faster once the P4K is out. Dave Maze posted an S1H review using GHa on the sample footage sections (not sure how different it is from the S1):

  19. I quite like the idea of shooting the 24 - 70 with the option of a bit more reach on the long end using the crop modes. I reckon I would probably leave it on the S35 most of the time, using the FF readout for occasional bokehlicious shots.
    1 point
  20. Very interested in the S1 and S1H as S35 camera. Coming from the Canon C100 and having a GH5 with a Speedbooster as well as several Sigma EFS (apsc) lenses this seems the most cost effective root into new gear. I can afford a new camera but not a bunch o new lenses! Really looking forward to hearing more about this.

  21. Leaving aside the field of view and lens vignetting differences, the pixel per pixel is simply that, you are recording the individual pixel of the video frame directly with no subsampling involved. I don't know the specs but the 4k FF recording probably comes from a 6K/5,9K readout, so you get better quality/improved color. On the other side, since the pixel/pixel recording would have less processing involved, I assume will be a faster reading, so less rolling shutter. This is my assumption.
    1 point
  22. What are the likely quality differences going to be like shooting 4K at FF, S35, and pixel/pixel on this sensor? Noise? Moire? Sharpness? Anything else likely to be affected?
    1 point
  23. I'll admit, Canon still seems to have the best color scientists on the planet. They may be floundering around in their selection of popular products, but when they do so get something out, the color balance is usually better than the competition.

wide angle lens for my gx80

I agree. It's the only lens still on my wishlist!! Not because it has great bokeh, but because it works in lower light situations (more of blue hour and into the night with city lights and cityscapes). Generally if I'm shooting wide I'm doing it because I want a grand scene, not as a vlog or anything. I do film myself, but more as B-roll and I've found an action camera is better for those shots as they're about me in the place rather than putting the focus on only me. Plus it's easier to hold up an action camera than a GH5 and big MF lens (it's also way less embarrassing too!) This are the shots I'm interested in: @jake all the above are the 8mm SLR Magic.

  25. Non of our complaints matter to Canon one tiny bit. They have a strong history in the camera industry. Their fans are incredibly loyal and pretty much dont care how Canon cripples their cameras. Canon fans dont care about BSI or stacked image sensors. They dont care how their sensors are read out or if they are video cropped or not. Canon fans are just as happy with MJPEG as they are with H.264. Why is all this true? Because a Canon rep told them not to worry about this stuff. Canon will make money no matter what cameras they release...because they understand how Cannon fans think. Canon can doesnt worry about keeping up with Sony, or Panasonic, or Ricoh, or Kodak or Poleroid technology.....because Canon fans dont buy Canon cameras for technology reasons. They buy Canon to be part of a historic "club"....to associate themselves with a good name. And this is all Cannon needs from them.

  26. Further Canon madness with regards EOS RP, M6 II and 90D: - Aperture Priority mode 4K shooting is disabled - Video mode is either Full Auto / Full Manual. It does not follow the mode dial selection - Cannot shoot 4K by hitting record button in a stills mode - and 1080p is recorded in P Auto no matter what stills mode you are in - No ALL-I codec option - No AF or IS with 120fps - 120fps is cropped, using 84% of sensor - Bitrate for 4K is just 120Mbit There is a movie-cropping feature on the 90D, so it will be interesting to see if 4K in the cropped mode is a 1:1 crop with no binning. Either way it's lose-lose. Crop in one, poor resolution and moire in the other. It isn't clear whether the EOS M6 II has the cropped-sensor mode in 4K or whether this is a 90D feature only. https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/learn/education/topics/article/2019/august/video-with-the-eos-90d/video-with-the-eos-90d/!ut/p/z1/jZFbT8JAEIV_DY9ltuz25tvS0otWsWCB7otpy1IaeyGl0sCvd1GiMWpx3mbynZlzMsBgBayKD3kWt3ldxYXoI6Y-3weu7nom8pHlGyiYTseWbZseoQSW7wD6oygC9h99D8D61y8gmkBUei_BMYPbq9fsT5bJ4jbrFdypVwCHXADd0yeugUb-1Hc0RDWToNkTlZ1Q-bFhMSaIqoZl4pF9znABeiKKVFlRJx_foFWCdeG-4Rve8Gb42ojxtm13-5sBGqCu64ZZXWcFH6Z1OUC_Sbb1voXVdxIi8QftK4djehYKKJ7ZPp075FGF5SHnHYRV3ZTCyfxse5fma4g0BWN5LSuSwnUuETXFUhwniiQbKVFkvsYbOQEXwa4Mw0opDC_3JJYc8Wn8IL0BI0U2tA!!/dz/d5/L2dBISEvZ0FBIS9nQSEh/?urile=wcm%3Apath%3A%2Fcanon_newweb_content%2Fdigital_learning%2Feducation%2Band%2Binspiration%2Farticles%2F2019%2Faugust%2Fvideo-with-the-eos-90d%2Fvideo-with-the-eos-90d

  27. I'm having a problem where the camera is unresponsive for 10 seconds after the screen comes on... won't record a thing. Lost shots due to that. Maybe the SD card is too slow, but it is a UHS-II one with 150MB/s speeds Maybe best to use CFast... But damn, with an image this good, it's a shame they did not put it in a better & more reliable camera body!

  32. Speaking of Cinema EOS---Carlos Quintero has an extensive commentary on image comparison between the Pocket 4k, 6k, one of the Red cameras, and the C200. He mentions he's always been a fan of the C200----but, he says, when he compares the image to the pocket 4 and 6ks, the image of the C200 looks like a video camera. As he is speaking he's showing the images---and he's absolutely right. The Blackmagic pockets are much better---obvious. So, where's the Cinema EOS advantage?

  33. I don't know what they're doing exactly, but they're done by now. Even if they would come out with some kind of competition to the new BMPCC 6K, the S1h or the incoming (I hope) a7sIII, they would just cripple it in some way that the others don't, for color science's sake. BMPCC fills so much tasks, from trad run&gun to streaming cameras, A7sii still reigns as the king of low light, and the S1h is basically everything a photographer/videographer has ever wished for. What's left for Canon in this segment? What could they get out of it? I guess the only way they could profit from this segment now would be to release some kind of Amira shoulder-style docu/broadcast camera at a decent price. But they'll never do that.

  35. I'm in the U.S., so my knowledge is based on our tax laws. First, I'd talk to a tax accountant and setup a LLC so your personal property is separate from your business. Second the IRS says deductible expenses must be ordinary (something typically used in that field, so cameras yes, mountain bikes no) and necessary. Eating is not a business expense, lunch with clients is different. For gear you can follow a depreciation schedule. For vehicle related expenses track mileage religiously, and then you can deduct a portion of maintenance expenses along with mileage. Don't see how Netflix or a video game can be classified as a business expense, but a percentage of your utilities, internet service, house payment and so on - yes. I'm also not a fan of making myself a target for an audit, so I stick to what can clearly be defined as a business expense. Also, the IRS - assuming you're American based on your location - has everything laid out in glorious government confusion here: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/deducting-business-expenses Chris

  36. I regret selling my A6500 as it was just such a useful "take anywhere" camera with awesome AF. Slog2 was instrumental in getting my holiday shots exposed well with a smooth picture. This line definitely has a marketplace, BUT.... I wouldn't say the A6600 is even worth looking at seen as the A6500 can be had for £600-£700 new. 4k60p, better ergonomics, better rolling shutter would have been worth it! This incremental update thing by Sony is getting ridiculous. They used to be very aggressive. Saving the best for the A7S III perhaps? As for Canon, you can't possibly defend them now. They are dead to me for video.

  39. Its not funny. A Canon rep told there is a legitimate reason for no 24p. He said something about the way the sensor is read out. He said that Canon wants it to operate at a perfect temperature. It runs too cold at 24p, but is at an optimum temp at 30p. It was done for the benefit of the camera.

  40. I’ve been messing once again with using my EOSM as a Digital Super 8 camera and I’m pretty happy with the results. For the video below I used the following setup. 6mm f/1.2 Pentax TV lens (paper shim between lens and C mount-EOSM adapter, for infinity focus) Tiffen Digital Diffusion 5 filter (reduces moire artefacts) EOSM with latest ML build 18fps override (exact) 5x zoom 12bit lossless RAW 4:3 aspect 1440 x 1080 i just used the aperture ring for exposure, rather than ND, as it seemed more authentically consumer Super 8. This video has effects applied - FilmConvert’s Super 8 grain; FCPX native “aged film” effect applied very sparingly for jitter and a little dust; a telecine’d Super 8 black frame (keyed over footage). If there is interest, I can post the ungraded footage.

  41. Why not? Don't they worth that mark?... I've had many brands, Blackmagic is not inferior in any way whatsoever, if not much more worthy from their value for the money... up to IQ you struggle to find how to beat with the other contenders if any. No more no less : ) You're simply underrating them, be fair : -) Ah and something else, some of complaints I read over the boards sounds to me when you try to cook some omelet for your family of twelve with two eggs. YOUR media won't handle a way faster bit rate nor your drive when overloaded with footage of the day before. Please let's learn how to handle digital media to begin with before starting to complain with no cause...? PS: @mercer You've added a confused reaction... but how do you think people feel when you seem to firmly state you wouldn't pay USD 2500 for a Blackmagic camera when that amount is simply a bargain for what you receive from them?? He wouldn't be the first one... ; -)
