Panasonic S1H review / hands-on - a true 6K full frame cinema camera
Rinad Amir and 3 others reacted to Roger for a topic
The answer is here at 47.56.4 points -
Yeah I don't think 6K will ever be a delivery standard. It's ideal for better 4K delivery. 4K or 8K as delivery standards will be the norm. I'm still mostly delivering in 1080p so 4K acquisition would be plenty for me. It's interesting that I've seen some arguments against getting the new Sony FX9 is that it's not future proof because it's only 4k internally.4 points

Update: Here are my initial impressions. First off, these are first impressions - they can easily change as I get more real world usage. It could be a rollercoaster of emotions here on wether I am keeping it or sending it back, possibly changing my mind daily. $4,000 is expensive and with the A7S3 looming in the future, I want to make sure I make the correct choice. I will do my best to gather up some footage to share by the end of the weekend. Cameras that I own or have owned that I am comparing against: Pocket 4k, Pocket 6k, BMMCC, A7S2, A7R3. Build: I am a new Panasonic full frame user. I have never touched an S1/SR or even seen one in person before my S1H arrived today. I absolutely love the build quality and weight. I am not a fan of super light cameras, though I know some are, as I feel there is too much shake when handholding light cameras. The screen swivel, top status display, viewfinder, buttons, etc., all feel great. IBIS: First off, the IBIS is insane. I have never seen IBIS this good and though I am late to the party, I had my holy shit moment for sure. This was a very large reason I bought this camera (asides from its specs). I am a hybrid/ run and gun shooter. Taking my ronin-s with me everywhere is just not practical. I do this is a hobby, with light paid work here and there. I want to be able to do mostly handheld and this is the first time I have used a camera where I feel that is possible for me. It's truly remarkable how far ahead this IBIS in comparison to my Sony. I can't imagine how good dual IS is, as I am just using regular IBIS. Footage: Not going to lie, I wasn't expecting much. The promos were good, but they were big budget and used anamorphic lenses. The S1 has limited time with VLOG and is not a very popular camera to begin with, so footage from that is also lacking. But I was honestly...kind of blown away. The colors look fantastic and the highlight roll off is better than that of the pocket cameras. In fact, I like the colors overall better than the pocket cameras - obviously they have RAW out the gate - which is a huge bonus. I like the older Blackmagic colors better then the new ones so maybe its just me. Dynamic range also seems better to me over the pocket. I am really not trying to hate on blackmagic or create a fanboy war - but to my eyes the colors are a bit more neutral, dynamic range seems a bit more, and the OLPF creates a nice softness coupled with my contax Zeiss that is very pleasing. The motion cadence is also very "cinematic" in its movement, MUCH better than that of the GH5 which I hate. Grading was very easy as well. I was not expecting it to look this good and in the right hands, we should seem some fantastic short videos coming out soon. Hopefully I can have one out to share. Final Thoughts: The blue clipping issue is either fixed or will be fixed and I am sure the ghosting issue will be fixed as well. I did not experience any of these yet, but its just day 1. So far it checks off a lot of boxes for me. Internal 4k 4:2:2 10 bit full frame, IBIS good enough to not need a gimbal in most static scenarios (still need one for lots of movement/walking), good cinematic motion cadence with a subtle softness, great colors, good battery life and a swivel screen. I think like a lot of folks it seems like the perfect camera, minus the autofocus. If I do decide to keep the S1H, only an A7S3 with these specs or better coupled with great autofocus will make me part ways with it. But I am just not sure if Sony can match this IBIS or if they will give their new color science to the alpha series. We shall see!4 points

I’m hoping JVC announces something soon. I’ve actually been holding off on purchasing any new cameras until they reveal their specs. Reason being that I truly enjoy using the GYLS300! Even with the Eva1, which I own, I’m 95 percent of the time using the JVC. I love the ergonomics and I love the IQ. Come on JVC Kenwood release some information!3 points -

@Cinegain you make some valid points, but with all due respect, it seems like you’re still dictating what is, or isn’t, acceptable in an open lens thread. Don’t get me wrong, I’m interested in almost anything lens related. For instance, Kye’s video link is sending me down a spiral of Canon FD lenses. Speaking of FD lenses, Zach’s contributions with his Canon FD 35-105mm f/3.5 lens, on a t2i, is actually very interesting since we already know that FD lenses don’t easily adapt to EF, so he must have had the mount modified. Your normal lens search would yield little results if searching for images or reviews of that lens on an older model Canon camera. And as a former t2i owner, I can easily ascertain how that lens would translate to other cameras. With my lens tests, I purposefully use the same actor, in similar locations so I can weed out which lenses I want to keep or sell. I post a couple images from those tests hoping to get some insight from other members or perhaps supply some info to other people that may be wondering how that lens renders with ML Raw. I’m sorry if it isn’t your cup of tea, but it doesn’t mean it’s invaluable to someone else. Hell, without samples, I think a lot of us might not know about the Nikon Bourne Identity lens and how it looked on a G7 or how the Tokina Angenieux Zoom renders on the P4K. But again, I look forward to your posts regarding topics you find interesting, even if I don’t find them as telling or useful to my work. But I agree with the sentiment of your comment. It’s given me some food for thought on other ways to tackle my personal lens tests and if I do share any of them, I will try to include a little more pertinent information in future posts.3 points -

I picked up my S1H from the shop in the UK on Tuesday! I had ordered the S1 originally in late August, but the day after I heard that the S1H would be able to output Prores Raw and I changed the order straight away. I only have a set of Mamiya Sekor C 645 lenses and the Kipon Baveyes L-mount medium format speedbooster at the moment. These work really well with the IBIS, the stabilisation definitely isn't perfect at all but the movement feels fairly natural. I decided to shoot an unboxing video, the first time I've tried this! Also shot a little bit of footage but it was already nighttime so couldn't do much (jump to 02:50 for the test footage). That was shot in UHD 10-bit 422 All-I 25 fps, with the Mamiya 80mm f1.9 lens, at ISO 10,000. It's soft at f1.9 but stopping down improves things. Not sure if the speedbooster reduces sharpness too. Not sure I'll have time to shoot more any time soon as this arrived just when I'm very busy, but look forward to shooting more! It's a heavy camera and does get a bit tiring if you need to hold it a long time, but it's not that bad!2 points

Last part makes me laugh. The people spouting off about the FX9's 6K are clearly the non shooting forum warriors. Its always been downscale to 4k or upscale to 8K when shooting in 6K/delivery.2 points -

Netflix is probably the biggest 4K advocate with their infamous camera/file requirements. Now that they basically make TVs in partnership with consumer giants it’s only a matter of time before 6K/8K becomes minimum production requirement for their content. I must admit watching 4K Dolby Vision HDR content on my 65” calibrated OLED 4K TV is pretty damn glorious! I can see cinema production adopting this quickly (already the case for those shooting RED). 35mm film being roughly 6K equivalent in resolution, even analog purists may have to reconsider digital.2 points

Since I am as guilty as Zach (more so even) I'd like to make a formal apology to your fingers to be forced to work a little harder, or maybe your eyes to witness my putrid images. The rationale for posting frame grabs, or stills, is to show how these lenses work in the real world and to show other readers how they look in combination with different cameras. As much as I enjoy reading about lenses, the courier font doesn't completely express the qualities of a lens in a visual medium. And as awesome as a link to every single new lens that gets released, from every single Chinese optics company is, I'd prefer to see how your images look with said lens and whatever camera you use... then I could truly get an idea about the quality of the lens for my possible use. I also think the lens section has been a little corner of this site where the technical merit of gear is put on the back burner for the optical and mechanical grace of manipulating light, so in that regard, I appreciate Geoff CB's and Noone's and Heartless's and BTM's and Kye's and Zach's, and etc... contributions as an artistic learning tool. But I learn more about a lens on Flickr than I do staring at a DXOmart chart... if you prefer charts and links, I again apologize. However, what I find odd about your comment is... if you would rather discuss lenses in a different manner, I don't think anybody is stopping you from starting a discussion that interests you more. In fact, the lens section is my favorite place in the forum, so I'd be happy if there were more discussions.2 points -

Yeah. But sometimes (in my case dues to tax reasons and older gear not being used) the time has come! Previously I had waited for canon to produce a reasonable b cam for my C100 and it never came (the XC10 just failing due to lowlight). Switched to GH5 and have enjoyed the experience (other than file size and extreme lowlight). Need a new A cam for my GH51 point

You are on a gear head/ Nerd forum, what did you expect. The only things working here is the latest 6k, raw or whatever camera. Talk art, cinematography etc and you get 3 response at best. I never ever saw one person complain about 2k on the big screen, they will complain about the story, acting, special effect eventually, but never ever if the movie was in 2k.1 point -
Society will always have things that they're not willing to talk about, and when someone does talk about them there will be controversy. Hollywood is relatively new to this territory, but it's the job of the artist to address the unaddressable, to discuss the undiscussable, and to generally bring these things to light. That's why there's so much dark humour - we laugh partly because we don't know what else to do. "I can't believe you said that". Check out Sarah Silverman, deeply wrong and also hilarious.1 point

Well, on the flip side of those reviews, it's getting buzz for best picture and best actor. I've not yet seen it, but work with people who have and they all loved it. Don't go into this like any other superhero movie, it's dark and is bound to have mild and extreme views from every side.1 point

I'm guessing they're in the very early stages of development. It'll probably be awhile before we get much info. The LS300 really is a wonderful camera. It deserved so much more attention and respect. My biggest issue is the menu system is straight up from the 1990s. I've even softened on the plastic build quality, as I appreciate that it's not too heavy (though it could be a little bit heavier!) You can pick them up used these days for so little money, it's insane.1 point -

EthanAlexander reacted to zerocool22 for a topic
Thats great and all, but what cine lenses are we gonna use that have AF. Im not beeing sarcastic, but I think there is a need of AF lenses that have a great look (Cooke, Zeiss supreme, angenieux, Arri masterprimes, leica summicrons/summiluxes, any anormophic). We should maybe give the zeiss otus/milvus lenses a go. While if you are doing event work, you would not go for a zcam anyway.1 point -
Thanks @kye - I think I'm leaning towards the 7artisans. This lens's job will primarily be for stealing shots with minimal setup. So extra light and easy of use will go a long way I think... I'm coming from a hacked/adapted Canon 10-18mm on a speed booster, and been loving the width of that.1 point

All traditional discussion will be put aside when people start talking about VR where you're heavily zooming into the delivery image when viewing it. My phone is 1080p and it looks like YT 360p when I'm using it with the VR adapter goggles (and it becomes a pair of ~1000x1000 eyepieces). For 360 degree VR video you're going to want more resolution for quite a long time - we are a very long way off from retina resolution VR.1 point

@Snowbro i mean.... maybe one day lol we live in a world where producers/directors/content distributors make, what are in practice, nonsensical demands bc OBVIOUSLY besides some ppl on this board, NO ONE knows 4k from a hole in the wall to these morons, 4k = sharper, which = better will 6k be a thing for delivery? i say no: the 4k gimmick hasnt worked with consumers, imho. sure, the big manufacturers have sold a lot of tvs, but the ppl who have 4k sets that i know (civilian nonfilmmakers lol) have no idea wtf theyre watching, and dont *feel* the benefit of their higher res tvs, so i highly doubt that those same (rich) ppl are going to get "fooled again" so easily ?at least not in the next few years ?1 point

Definitely recommend Ryzen, we just had new pc this year with i7-9700K, RTX 2070 8GB, 32GB RAM, 500GB + 2TB Samsung Evo SSD, it can handle 4K from C200 to an extent then start lagging a bit, with Ryzen should be smooth entirely.. Though render time is 4x faster than the old i7-4770 with gtx1070 8gb & 32gb ram we had, editing 5.7K 360 video is a lot smoother too1 point

The camera was just released in the US today, so you really need to give it some time. Pocket 4k had garbage promo videos and took a long time to start getting good well thought pieces, so you need to at least wait more than 24 hours from release. I did think kepler was fantastic though and so was the bowling one. That wobble has to be in software warp stabilizer, none of the footage I have seen online has that happening. I received mine this morning and will put it though its paces. I had a pocket 4k and a pocket 6k. So I will be comparing to those as I still have their original files/clips on my computer. I will be doing all handheld shots with adapted lenses Contax Zeiss lenses. I will report my honest feedback and if the camera does not impress, it will go back. I have no horse in this race as I only use adapted lenses anyways, so I am not defending this camera blindly. But I will say the footage you linked is pretty much all wide shots, set at infinity, with not much of a grade happening. Most cameras with that won't look impressive. I just think it has not been in enough hands yet to expect great footage yet - especially since good projects take weeks/months. A lot of the folks posting clips up seem to have no idea what they are doing, as they dont even have the proper shutter speed. Give it some time.1 point

My gripe is the whole mentality of: 1)Company/person did great things for the industry! 2)Product just works and works great! ....therefore, they get a free pass to do whatever they want because they earned that privilege. also it seems reduser is leaking into the YouTube comments for video 4. Pretty much the same sentiment. ”Red products have done great things for my career. Therefore they are above reproach.”1 point -

I have shot lots of field documentary material and I basically agree. We use Ursas, rigged Sony Alpha, DVX200, rigged BMP4CC4k, etc. I am disappointed the video-centric S1H does not allow punch-in to check focus while recording. The BMPCC4K and even my old A7R2 did that. An external EVF or monitor/recorder can provide that on the S1H, but if the goal is retaining a highly functional minimal configuration, lack of focus punch-in while recording is unfortunate. Panasonic's Matt Frazer said this was a limitation of their current imaging pipeline and would likely not be fixable via firmware. The Blackmagic battery grip allows the BMPC6K to run for 2 hrs. If Blackmagic produced a BMPCC6K "Pro" version which had IBIS, a brighter tilting screen, waveform, and maybe 4k 12-bit ProRes or 6k ProRes priced at $4k, that would be compelling.1 point
