I think they can be used in the scenarios they are showing, but only with the supporting gear they list rather than in the way they actually illustrate the operators doing it Whilst the AF solution is quite a few months away, my small hardware interface to use the Tilta Nucleus Nano focus controller with the electronic lenses (as well as the software route via our app) isn't. Without blowing my own trumpet unduly, it makes a pretty significant difference to manual focusing control with native lenses and can offer some mitigation operationally for not having an AF system worth the name. No wires, no motors and no additional powering also makes it a lot more friendly for smaller configurations.3 points -

While long tracking shots are always incredible, and difficult to physically pull off, here's a shot that is amazing for the way it affects the story. (Start at 3:14 in case the link doesn't automatically). What I love about this is that there's no complex choreography or VFX, it would be almost trivial to shoot. It's not even a particularly striking composition. Yet this completely ordinary shot both completes Cobb's emotional journey, and simultaneously asks the biggest question of the film to leave an otherwise closed ending completely open. It's worth noting that unlike franchise films, this open ending has no room for a sequel. If we disregard the cut in to Michael Caine, the shot really begins at 3:06, which makes this the only shot where Cobb is seen together with his children, and also the only shot where it is unclear whether he's in the real world.2 points -
I agree with you. The camera can work well in most environments with some accessories. I work a lot of live events where I only get one shot and there are no retakes. I frequently use the P4K/P6K cameras on a shoulder rig, with a big battery and a follow focus. In that environment, they work well. I am still sorting the straight out of camera colors for our live broadcasts, but I am fairly happy with this setup. I am not really happy with the camera when I have to use the camera handheld in a rapidly changing environment. I guess it just comes down to the effort needed to get great footage. Sometimes grabbing an S1H, GH5, or an A7III is going to give you more usable footage. Different cameras for different jobs2 points

The GH5's auto focus is underrated
IronFilm reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
Hear me out: It's not GREAT. But I'm tired of hearing the same claims that Panasonic's auto focus (specifically the GH5) is "awful." Here is a two minute clip from a pro wrestling event I shot last night. I used the Panasonic 12-35mm with one area auto focus. Lighting is terrible in that venue, so please forgive that. I chose this to share because there's a lot of movement and action going on, and as you can see the auto focus does a pretty good job. I just figured I would share this to show what the GH5 is capable of in a real world, practical situation.1 point -

Well, I tried my best... ...but once people here try to currently watch TV or streaming shows... LOL : ) ...what about those known as movies aka bigger than life? While the P4K/P6K *could* be used in the situations they show in those ads, I am not sure that I would chose the P4K/P6K cameras for those settings. As I have said many times, I love the P4K & P6K cameras and the options they provide. But, in a rapidly moving run/gun situation, I have found them challenging to work with. The one-touch AF is slow (at best) and the battery life is poor (unless you use an external NP or v-mount). Perhaps your @BTM_Pix AF solution will help in this area. If I have time to set up and can use sticks, give me the P4K/P6K every time. If I have to go handheld or move fast, I generally take something else (GH5/GH5s, etc.).1 point

Haha I see your point. I guess I’ve only ever saw the video clips and not the way they were used in the marketing material.1 point -
I've never seen any of them and, like @Andrew Reid, hadn't even heard of the acronym MCU outside of it being the name of a control surface for a DAW. The closest I've come to seeing something similar would be Aquaman but thats only because it was in 4DX and, as 4DX is my guilty secret, I leave behind all pretence of it being art at the door and will literally watch any old shit as long as my seat is being thrown round, water is spraying on me and blasts of air are coming from the seat in front of me throughout. That confirms Scorsese's view of there being a theme park aspect to this stuff as I would no more watch Aquaman at home again on my TV than I would leap off the wardrobe to simulate being on the Haunted Mansion ride. I don't think there's any problem with both types of film existing though or enjoying both in equal measure as it depends on the circumstances. Its no different to music where I can prefer to listen to Talking Heads or the Cocteaus or the Bunnymen or whatever in the comfort of my own attic but that doesn't stop me shaking my arse to a bit of Abba at a family party. In the case of the latter, it very much is like 4DX for anyone unfortunate enough to be sat in the vicinity of me shaking my fat old arse during Dancing Queen as they do indeed experience a similar effect of chair shaking, liquid dousing and unexpected blasts of wind hitting them.1 point

No idea about Promura, but I read something interesting about films inside lenses - someone said that you can get rid of them with a vacuum chamber. I think the idea is that whatever film is on there (assuming it was from the lens being heated or aging) got there by evaporating from somewhere and condensing on the glass. Therefore, if you put the lens in a vacuum then that stuff will evaporate again and the lens will become clear. I've never tried it but the logic seems sound.1 point

What is your lens kit strategy?
kye reacted to TheRenaissanceMan for a topic
3 rules: 1. Must be adaptable to EF mount and shorter. Gotta be able to use it on at least a C200/F3/UMP. 2. Must focus the "correct" (non-Nikon) direction with hard stops. Anything else messes with my muscle memory (or my AC's) and creates problems with remote follow focuses. 3. Must have appeal beyond just my taste: ie, should be desirable to clients who hire me, directors I work with, and other shooters who might rent them. Otherwise I'm just spinning my wheels. Personally I prefer a ~1.4x ratio between focal lengths, but I can make do with 2x in a pinch. In tight spaces it matters a great deal.1 point -

Speaking of, Victoria is another film shot in one continuous take, with no hidden cuts. It's impressively action packed with a huge scope of locations. Certainly one of the most impressive shots I've ever seen.1 point -
I liked the shot in Russian Ark. In case you're unfamiliar with it, the whole film was one continuous steadicam shot. IIRC it was filmed in three sections and stitched together in post to look like one shot, but it's invisible so it looks like one shot. The film was very good too, not for everyone, but I got into it and it created an immersive experience. Plus, I had no idea what the hell the camera was, sometimes people would talk to camera like it was a person, other times it would just be ignored and the people who talked to it were also mostly ignored so it wasn't clear if they actually existed either, and it didn't really fit or make sense, so that was intriguing too.1 point

Looks like you can do Nlog regardless of if using the Ninja V or not. Not confirmed 100% but it seems that way. Considering I can get a Ninja 2 for under $200 that makes a full frame 10 bit camera pretty dang cheap. How is the 1080p 60p coming out of the camera I wonder. I know the S1 HD is pretty sucky.1 point -

For me as a sports shooter its any NFL Films shot that's a super tight ball track and is perfectly in focus. My draw drops every time. They have a montage of what i'm talking about from 6:17 - 6:33. All 100% skill with manual focus. Mind you these guys get zero do overs so if they miss focus they are in the hot seat. https://youtu.be/4jcPjNEePgw?t=3771 point -
Ainol. Didn't they go out of business years ago? ? I remember the days of their 7" tablets like the Ainol Novo7 Aurora, Fire, etc. When there was no such thing as OTA and you were messing around with root, recovery, flashing and the sorts. Glad that's behind us. Speaking of gadgets and in particular tablets... I hadn't used a tablets in years anymore due to the fact they were pretty much larger smartphones... when smartphones themselves gotten bigger over the years as well. I just didn't see much added value unless you can make it productive or use it for multimedia, but that meant a keyboard... origami folding cover and that made the whole thing to cumbersome to take with... ... but that all changed when I bought the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro (apparently availlable still at the Lenovo US store; significantly discounted (499.99 > $224.99). The kickstand changes the game, I'll tell you. JBL Dolby Atmos speakers are marvelous as well. And it has a built-in projector! Been a couple of years and updates were never Lenovo's strong suit, but now there's a new one in town at last! It was launched at IFA Berlin 2019 earlier last month, doesn't seem to be availlable in the US, but is already shipping in the EU. I have fallen in love with tablets again thanks to the Yoga Tab-series and it's currently perhaps the no.1 gadget that adds value to my life (eBook/eMag reading, Netflix/streaming/YouTube/video, browsing, etc). Again, the kickstand is underrated! In certain aircraft you can even flip it out 180 degrees and put it in the magazine pouch of the seat in front of you (like so) so that you have your own in-flight entertainment system at eye-height. Regarding the notepadthingie. I actually have one of those. Believe I got it from Banggood.com , they're a cool site. They've got one that's $9.99 opposed to $18. Of course don't forget to look on AliExpress which pretty much is your one-stop-spot for anything these days (don't forget to check eBay... and Amazon either). You'll find big brands (e.g. Aputure) have their own stores over at AliExpress. Sticking to the topic of notepadthingies... I have this reMarkable eReader that gives you the look and feel of actual paper. Read, write, doodle! Cool schtuff. Won't go on about tablets/readers anymore! But let me think of more things adding true value to my life... what wouldn't I want to give up? My BOSE QC35 II headphones. Back in the day I was mesmerized by the effectiveness of the QuietComfort 15 and had to have it. I then briefly had switched it up next round with the Philips Fidelio NC1 where the audio and comfort were better, but the noicecancelling qualities were a bit behind and it didn't work properly anymore at all after a while. Now happily rocking the QC35 II although I've been hearing good things about that Sony WH-1000XM3. I'm in planes and trains a lot and noise cancellation and something to enjoy multimedia with is definitely a must! Wired IEM? I really like the in-ears from Alpha & Delta (through http://www.lendmeurears.com ). The AD D2 are a great bargain with a sound signature that I find to be 'just right'. For wireless audio, my go-tos are the Anker Soundcore Liberty Air. Not actually that cheap, but the fit and sound here as well I find to be just right. Where you gonna play that music offa? Smartphone? Laptop? Well, sure. But I really like this portable Hi-Res player by Hidizs, the AP80 (as seen on Kickstarter). You gotta charge all your gadgets! So I can't go without my ROCK chargers. They're on AliExpress with their own store: https://rock.aliexpress.com. This is a definite must for anyone: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32848029671.html! Universal global travel charger: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32971342589.html. Powerbank: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32960165417.html. Got ya charging covered? How about some cables? These are amongst the best in the game: https://gadgetao.aliexpress.com/store/1996286/search?origin=n&SortType=bestmatch_sort&SearchText=100W / https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33057601215.html. Got some gear that still rocks microUSB and some that's USB-C already? Still use a single cable with i.e. these AIFFECT 2-in-1 cables. I've organized my desk speaker system cables with their little cable clamps. More brands with this kind of stuff on AliExpress (and Amazon sometimes even): Anker, UGreen, Tronsmart, Blitzwolf, ORICO, Vinsic, USAMS, Floveme, McDodo, Dodocool, etc. Need a cardreader that connects to most of your devices? This Vention one is rather convincing. I'm also a big fan of the Meenova stuff (readers/cables), availlable through: https://gadgetao.aliexpress.com. Need to fight the rain? Don't get your gear wet, get this Teflon-coated umbrella from Tiohoh. Getting more into the photography side of things then... ? Kent & Faith Concept (K&F Concept) has their own AliExpress store, I'll be trying their vND soon: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000067824200.html. Bags? Love some of the Caden ones: https://cadencameraacces.aliexpress.com (tempted to upgrade my old shoulderbag for this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000019173719.html). For DJI OSMO Pocket accessories it's hard to beat Behorse: https://behorse-1990.aliexpress.com/store/237708 (similar store: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/3239087 ). All things mainly GoPro related? Telesin! C-mount lenses? Pixco/Rocks Photography. How about spare batteries? If you're in the EU you definitely need to have a look over at https://pts-trading.de , home of Patona. Great brand, great batteries. Need to keep in-touch on set/on location and will cheap walkietalkies do the trick for ya? Look no further then this little set of 2pcs Baofeng walkietalkies. Mmmkai. Getting a little carried away though, that should do for now. ? Will just leave you with 3 China store search engines that might be helpful and then just start browsing away... http://chinaprices.us / https://www.wholecheap.com / https://en.pandacheck.com.1 point

MCU?1 point -
They are different. The Micro nails a filmic look that none of these modern cameras achieve out the box. Its gritty, raw, and has a very organic feel to it. But, it doesn't have IBIS, does not shoot photos, shoot 4k, etc. The S1H has a very nice cinematic look to it as well, but it's not as "filmic" and gritty like the micro. Colors of the S1H still amazing though and I prefer the colors of the S1H more than the Pocket 4k/6k new color science (I owned both). With all that said, the S1H has so much going for it that my micro will only get used for certain situations and most likely not run and gun anymore. I have to use the micro on a ronin-s as there are way too many micro jitters hand held. Coming from Blackmagic and Sony cameras, I can't stress enough how unbelievable the IBIS of the S1H is, especially dual IS with their 24-105. There is no need for a gimbal unless you need slider like shots or walking shots. For stationary, short walks, pans, etc., there is no absolutely no need for a gimbal/monopod/shoulder rig, that's how steady it is. The footage looks incredible, especially if you know what you are doing and how to properly expose vlog and convert it rec. 709 with the proper varicam LUTs. More importantly for my decision to make this my main camera is that I take photos as well and the one thing I was pleasantly surprised about with this camera is how good the autofocus for photos is considering all the complaints. The autofocus for video is horrible, but I manual focus for video. But for photos, it was MUCH better than I thought after listening to everyone complain. Eye auto focus works great as well. Not as good as my A7R3, but still really good. Another thing I haven't heard anyone talk about is how fast it can switch between custom modes, for example I have a video mode on the dial and a photo mode that I switch between. Video mode has vlog, 180 degree shutter, different settings etc that I keep static and photo mode has none of that. When I switch between them it is seamless, no loading, no screen blackout, none of that. It is instant and quick and I can switch back and forth instantly. To me, I look at the cost of $4000 different than most. Unlike when I shot with a pocket 4/6k or even the micro - I don't need to carry a gimbal or shoulder rig, I don't need to mount a heavy v-mount battery on the back, I don't need an external monitor if I want to tilt or rotate it (I still do for the large screen, but its not necessary), and I don't need to bring a second body and lenses if I want to take photos. On top of all that - I prefer the video image over the blackmagic pocket 4k and 6k. It has a nicer highlight roll off, seems like better dynamic range, and I prefer the colors. All this without shooting RAW yet. I know that was way more info than you needed, but we are so lucky to have all these tools as filmmakers now days and this is the first camera in a very very long time that has me excited like this. I have owned or shot with the Canon C200, URSA Mini Pro 4.6k, Micro Cinema Camera, Pocket 4k/6k, Red Raven, A7R3, A7S2, A73. This is the first camera out of all of those where I can simply pack the camera and a lens and have what I need for a day of video and photos without a bag full of stabilization gear and photo gear mixed with video gear.1 point

It’s a fantastic looking camera. Unfortunately most the people uploading footage with it on YouTube (this video being the exception) have no clue what they are doing. Thpriest reacted to Video Hummus for a topic
I think we will see more and more of these more exotic (and expensive) MFT lenses as we already have an extensive lineup of glass from first party to third party. We will also have more people crying about it “expensive lenses”, forgetting the fact they have many many more options that they probably already own. How many 12-35 f2.8 lenses do you want? ? I would love to see more f/2 zoom lenses. Maybe f/0.95 primes with autofocus. I also don’t mind variable apertures if they allow the lens more reach, smaller size, and a lower base aperture.1 point -
It really does have a special look to it and for what I paid for mine, it would have been stupid not to buy it. However, due to other projects and needs, I haven’t really had the chance to rig it up perfectly yet. My goal is to have a one or two lens solution consisting of either c-mount lenses or native lenses. I want to keep it as simple and compact as possible.1 point
