  1. Recent video I made with my GH5. Shot on the Leica 12-60 lens using a Ronin SC Gimbal. Graded in Resolve with Filmconvert and shot in Cine-D profile at 50fps with a Tiffen Black Satin 1 filter attached. Two years going and still think this camera is amazing.

  2. Hear me out: It's not GREAT. But I'm tired of hearing the same claims that Panasonic's auto focus (specifically the GH5) is "awful." Here is a two minute clip from a pro wrestling event I shot last night. I used the Panasonic 12-35mm with one area auto focus. Lighting is terrible in that venue, so please forgive that. I chose this to share because there's a lot of movement and action going on, and as you can see the auto focus does a pretty good job. I just figured I would share this to show what the GH5 is capable of in a real world, practical situation.

  5. Well in my experience with GH5 its not Sony or Canon level of autofocus but! If u dont jump infront of lens like twat it should work perfect i hate seen people comparing Sony to Pana autofocus on youtube they dont talk about 8bit 100mb codec or lack anamorphic features or waveform scopes or real Cinema 24p mode Sorry for rage comments people i truly got nothing against other brands. This was shot with GH5 autofocus 10bit internal using waveform and one tiny lens

  6. I've never seen any of them and, like @Andrew Reid, hadn't even heard of the acronym MCU outside of it being the name of a control surface for a DAW. The closest I've come to seeing something similar would be Aquaman but thats only because it was in 4DX and, as 4DX is my guilty secret, I leave behind all pretence of it being art at the door and will literally watch any old shit as long as my seat is being thrown round, water is spraying on me and blasts of air are coming from the seat in front of me throughout. That confirms Scorsese's view of there being a theme park aspect to this stuff as I would no more watch Aquaman at home again on my TV than I would leap off the wardrobe to simulate being on the Haunted Mansion ride. I don't think there's any problem with both types of film existing though or enjoying both in equal measure as it depends on the circumstances. Its no different to music where I can prefer to listen to Talking Heads or the Cocteaus or the Bunnymen or whatever in the comfort of my own attic but that doesn't stop me shaking my arse to a bit of Abba at a family party. In the case of the latter, it very much is like 4DX for anyone unfortunate enough to be sat in the vicinity of me shaking my fat old arse during Dancing Queen as they do indeed experience a similar effect of chair shaking, liquid dousing and unexpected blasts of wind hitting them.

  8. I thought this might interest a few people, I find these things really interesting because it shows thinking and not just the final output. I think it's probably from the Sony Pictures hack a few years ago. EDIT; This was actually the link I meant to post but the other one is interesting too https://wikileaks.org/sony/docs/05/docs/Camera/FeedbackV1 1_Next Generation Camera v6.pdf https://wikileaks.org/sony/docs/05/docs/Atsugi/To_Nakayama_san.pdf Apologies if this has been posted before, I couldn't find anything.

  9. Here are Martin Scorsese's words: [the magazine in question is Empire Magazine] Surely, people are outraged. But, in my view, he is quite right. He took care not to hurt the MCU creators by saying: 'as well made as they are', so I don't see why he is accused of being insulting.

  10. You were making a good case until this statement. Canon removing 24p from current and probably future cameras is absolutely purposefully crippling them. There is no extra strain on the processor for 24p/25p versus 30p. It's predatory behavior from a company that is trying to push its customers around - not cool.

  11. Hi, i been busy buy but i wanted to share this short film i did last year. The video is private, the film is now going thru festivals, so please don't make it public. But feel free to show with friends. This was shot with GH5 and the used GHAlex Clog conversion, then B/W film emulation.

  12. I would say the G9 and GH5S autofocus is even more competent. At 60p I think it competes with pre-eye tracking Sony hybrid AF. The A7iii shares some of the pulsing of DfD since it uses contrast AF for the “last millimeter” so to speak. So there is that jitter. S1H has improved things a lot. In certain situations, if the light source is broad (like a window, doorway, bright street light) even the DfD pulsing effect is extremely well controlled on the S1H. The bane of DfD of course is Christmas or fairy lights with all those tiny sources of light. Maybe some hope for future DfD cameras. In my experience GH5S/G9 autofocus is perfectly useable for gimbal/steadycam work where It’s pretty much essential.

  13. I don't think that the "lighthearted entertainment" aspect is what really makes MCU theme park-ish. I'd argue that the George Lucas Star Wars movies are also lighthearted entertainment, but without the theme park feel. I even think the first Transformers still felt like a "movie" compared to the MCU (and I'm not talking about quality, but tone and structure). I think this is exactly right: There's something different about MCU and modern Star Wars movies compared to other blockbusters even, they are more like sports in how they portray the heroes and villains, and structurally they are episodic. Edit: Another way to put it is that in the MCU, characters are defined by traits. Iron Man is a leader. Starlord makes 80's references. I would argue that in Avengers Endgame, the choice they make to fight Thanos is never examined at all, it's a given. In classic storytelling movies, characters are defined by choices and their reasoning. Frodo chooses to take the ring to Mordor to save the Shire. The T-800 chooses to melt himself to save the future. In the same way, we admire sports stars first and foremost because of their abilities and traits.

  14. I think Marvel movies (other than Iron Man) have a similar style of storytelling to recent Spielberg movies (and Transformers movies). Instead of there being a character arc for the protagonist and that being the focus of the story, there's an external threat and then some elite heroic force stands up to that threat and stops it (could be Iron Man standing up to Thanos, could be Lincoln standing up against slavery). To that extent, these are movies about rejecting external change rather than they are about embracing personal change. That kind of story appeals to me less. (Not that I'm advocating for either slavery or for Thanos.) Even with older blockbusters like Armageddon where there is an external threat, it's about the "everyman" standing up to save the day when NASA can't. Or in Enemy of the State it's the individual vs the establishment–this is the trend in the 90s imo, populism. And there's usually an accompanying character arc. With recent Marvel movies, and recent Spielberg movies, and maybe just recent studio pictures in general.... it's the "elites" saving the everyman. And often the only arc is the everyman learning to embrace the "elites" while they expel whatever outside force threatens the everyman... But I also agree about MCU being extremely well made... I dunno, structurally it reminds me more of tv, which it basically is. Or sports–watching your team trounce the other team. But credit where it's due–you'd expect MCU fans to pile on Scorsese and vice versa, but it seems the discourse has been civil and intelligent. I used to think the appeal of MCU was watching your team beat up the other team. Maybe it's more complex than that and MCU fans are more sophisticated, and ironically it's Scorsese positing an elitist us vs them framework here.

  15. Saw the movie yesterday. Its good, but a bit long... and I still feel the same way, some people are going to come out of it thinking - "I've had it rough too, I've been bullied too, I've been abused as a child too, so lets go shoot up a place." I guess its very much like this: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/jun/24/jim-carrey-violence-kick-ass-2-sandy-hook Anyway, the movie theatre I went to see it at, had some kids with full face paint like the Joker, I was like isn't it a bit early for Halloween???

  17. Z6 viewfinder is miles ahead of the A7III. I've owned both and while the A7III is okay your constantly aware your looking at a screen. There is a slight delay in the Z6 when recording video that is very annoying however. The S1 viewfinder I would say is about the same in my brief trying of it. S1 has significantly better specs, but also expensive lenses as does the Nikon. One thing to consider for future work. The Sony, Panasonic, and Canon cameras have or will have cinema cameras that you will be able to use their lenses on. I love my Z6 despite it's quirks, but I'll never be able to use their glass on a native high end cinema body. This is a factor if you want to choose a system.

  18. Its just the regular MC-21 that has already been released so around $250 for EF version and around $125 for the SA version. The MC-31 is stil TBA but I'd guess it will be closer in price to the Wooden Camera PL to L mount at $499 than it will to the Leica one at $1399. For a budget option, Fotodiox now do one for around $150. For a really budget option, you can download the 3D files off Sigma and print one yourself !

  19. BTM_Pix, great find! HG-11 is the handgrip, coming it at roughly 60 USD, while HG-21 is a much larger one for about 100 USD LVF-11 is the LCD viewfinder attachment for roughly 300 USD BPL-11 is a very small baseplate CN-21 and SAC-7P are DC and AC battery adapters, while BC-71 is the battery charger, strange, that these wouldn't be included. CR-41 is a remote trigger, maybe more useful for photography. Would be really interested in the lens adapter pricing, MC-31 (PL) and MC-21 (EF) images can be found here btw

  21. Their consumption tax went up to 10% at the start of the month, so that is 200,000 net which does equate to the $1899 then. In the UK that means it should be roughly the same price in pounds of £1899 when you add the VAT and puts it into the same range as the Z6 and A7iii. I think both of those cameras certainly have quite a big edge currently regarding native lenses, AF and EVF amongst a host of other things but RAW to SSD and tiny form factor for modularity are very big and likely decisive factors for a lot of people here? The equivalent of a 4K Full Frame OG BMPCC for £1899 versus the 6K Super35 new generation BMPCC for £2200 is an interesting dilemma !

I am actually happy to leave it since I have much better lenses and it does work ok (ish). I will try the vacuum though and if I can get this little 2.8 cheap enough i think I will. I had a EF 135 f2 L and Sigma 150 2.8 and had to let one go so kept the Sigma as it is more versatile but the L was light years better than the 1.8 Promura so not a high priority. Thanks though.

  23. i must be shallow, i have nearly the whole set on dvd?. I find them lighthearted entertainment. Life throws enough drama my way during the day, i dont need to watch more of it on a screen at night. I guess i'm after the escapism aspect most are so far fetched thats it a load off the mind for awhile. Perhaps thats just me. i reckon barefoot_dp might be onto something with his theory, but its an industry it gives people a job, so who am i to begrudge them and they get paid for it some more than others no doubt ? edit : my first thoughts were that this is a mature age gent from a different era and i'd expect his views to represent that, and i am fine with that, but then i think of stan lee who wrote alot of this comic stuff he was also a mature aged gent. So now i'm thinking its like a perspective, none are really wrong its just what works for the individual.

  25. i dont think i'm taking points away from the bmp4k, rather consider it as user feedback and mostly i'm pretty happy with it, just in case there was any doubt out there. I certainly never said it was or wasn't run and gun. My style isnt running and gunning, actually my style doesn't include any running at all if i'm honest ?. A lot of machines are heading towards multiple use, dual purpose functionality, take smartphones for example, heck even a fridge can connect to the internet these days. I reckon the first camera company or even upstart company that loads up on features in one model will clean up. They may sell less models but they will sell more of one kind. As they say, build it and they will come.

  26. A couple weeks ago I shot some test footage with my buddy, John. He's a great actor that has played lead roles in a few of my films. Anyway, to get the old creative juices going again, I invited him over so I could see how the E2 reacted under my Quasar Science RGBX LED lamps. I used a combination of daylight balanced and cyan. I intended to sell the E2 when my F6 arrives at the end of this month, but I think the E2 plus speedbooster will be an excellent b-cam to my F6 when I need high frame rates that the F6 can't reach. 28. If you're talking professional commercial sets, raw and autofocus are actually not used that much. Most commercial shoots using the Alexa shoot in Prores4444 rather than raw, as do a great deal of feature films. Of course there's Red, but r3d is the only option available (for all res/frame rates) so you don't have a choice but to shoot raw. And autofocus is very rarely used on professional productions. It's more in the domain on hobbyists, or single-man shoots like weddings. Even for gimbal work, pros generally use a follow focus, or deep focus + careful blocking, rather than AF. We hear a lot more about raw, AF, IBIS, 6K/8K etc on forums than you do on real productions because the people on forums are largely opinionated tech nerds with G.A.S!

  29. I'm almost certain you're being tongue in cheek - but I'm sure Scorsese understands that very well. He'd just rather put his efforts into films that he sees as artistically more fulfilling, rather than another interchangeable smokescreen that is designed purely to put more money into the studios pockets. And I think he's earned the right to pick and choose his projects by this point (not to mention he's earned enough that he can put time into projects he loves over ones that are more profitable). I agree with him, and have personally not bothered to watch any of them recently unless I'm flying and I need something brainless that I can only half pay attention to. It's just rinse and repeat, for the most part - but often that is what audiences want most (unfortunately!). I just hate the way that every super-hero movie (or other franchise) these days seems like they're are just a teaser for the next movie. It feel like many movies' entire purpose was to introduce a new character, just so that character can have their own stand-alone movie. But that stand alone movie always ends up being the teaser for another new character on the endless treadmill.

  33. Ainol. Didn't they go out of business years ago? ? I remember the days of their 7" tablets like the Ainol Novo7 Aurora, Fire, etc. When there was no such thing as OTA and you were messing around with root, recovery, flashing and the sorts. Glad that's behind us. Speaking of gadgets and in particular tablets... I hadn't used a tablets in years anymore due to the fact they were pretty much larger smartphones... when smartphones themselves gotten bigger over the years as well. I just didn't see much added value unless you can make it productive or use it for multimedia, but that meant a keyboard... origami folding cover and that made the whole thing to cumbersome to take with... ... but that all changed when I bought the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro (apparently availlable still at the Lenovo US store; significantly discounted (499.99 > $224.99). The kickstand changes the game, I'll tell you. JBL Dolby Atmos speakers are marvelous as well. And it has a built-in projector! Been a couple of years and updates were never Lenovo's strong suit, but now there's a new one in town at last! It was launched at IFA Berlin 2019 earlier last month, doesn't seem to be availlable in the US, but is already shipping in the EU. I have fallen in love with tablets again thanks to the Yoga Tab-series and it's currently perhaps the no.1 gadget that adds value to my life (eBook/eMag reading, Netflix/streaming/YouTube/video, browsing, etc). Again, the kickstand is underrated! In certain aircraft you can even flip it out 180 degrees and put it in the magazine pouch of the seat in front of you (like so) so that you have your own in-flight entertainment system at eye-height. Regarding the notepadthingie. I actually have one of those. Believe I got it from Banggood.com , they're a cool site. They've got one that's $9.99 opposed to $18. Of course don't forget to look on AliExpress which pretty much is your one-stop-spot for anything these days (don't forget to check eBay... and Amazon either). You'll find big brands (e.g. Aputure) have their own stores over at AliExpress. Sticking to the topic of notepadthingies... I have this reMarkable eReader that gives you the look and feel of actual paper. Read, write, doodle! Cool schtuff. Won't go on about tablets/readers anymore! But let me think of more things adding true value to my life... what wouldn't I want to give up? My BOSE QC35 II headphones. Back in the day I was mesmerized by the effectiveness of the QuietComfort 15 and had to have it. I then briefly had switched it up next round with the Philips Fidelio NC1 where the audio and comfort were better, but the noicecancelling qualities were a bit behind and it didn't work properly anymore at all after a while. Now happily rocking the QC35 II although I've been hearing good things about that Sony WH-1000XM3. I'm in planes and trains a lot and noise cancellation and something to enjoy multimedia with is definitely a must! Wired IEM? I really like the in-ears from Alpha & Delta (through http://www.lendmeurears.com ). The AD D2 are a great bargain with a sound signature that I find to be 'just right'. For wireless audio, my go-tos are the Anker Soundcore Liberty Air. Not actually that cheap, but the fit and sound here as well I find to be just right. Where you gonna play that music offa? Smartphone? Laptop? Well, sure. But I really like this portable Hi-Res player by Hidizs, the AP80 (as seen on Kickstarter). You gotta charge all your gadgets! So I can't go without my ROCK chargers. They're on AliExpress with their own store: https://rock.aliexpress.com. This is a definite must for anyone: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32848029671.html! Universal global travel charger: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32971342589.html. Powerbank: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32960165417.html. Got ya charging covered? How about some cables? These are amongst the best in the game: https://gadgetao.aliexpress.com/store/1996286/search?origin=n&SortType=bestmatch_sort&SearchText=100W / https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33057601215.html. Got some gear that still rocks microUSB and some that's USB-C already? Still use a single cable with i.e. these AIFFECT 2-in-1 cables. I've organized my desk speaker system cables with their little cable clamps. More brands with this kind of stuff on AliExpress (and Amazon sometimes even): Anker, UGreen, Tronsmart, Blitzwolf, ORICO, Vinsic, USAMS, Floveme, McDodo, Dodocool, etc. Need a cardreader that connects to most of your devices? This Vention one is rather convincing. I'm also a big fan of the Meenova stuff (readers/cables), availlable through: https://gadgetao.aliexpress.com. Need to fight the rain? Don't get your gear wet, get this Teflon-coated umbrella from Tiohoh. Getting more into the photography side of things then... ? Kent & Faith Concept (K&F Concept) has their own AliExpress store, I'll be trying their vND soon: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000067824200.html. Bags? Love some of the Caden ones: https://cadencameraacces.aliexpress.com (tempted to upgrade my old shoulderbag for this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000019173719.html). For DJI OSMO Pocket accessories it's hard to beat Behorse: https://behorse-1990.aliexpress.com/store/237708 (similar store: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/3239087 ). All things mainly GoPro related? Telesin! C-mount lenses? Pixco/Rocks Photography. How about spare batteries? If you're in the EU you definitely need to have a look over at https://pts-trading.de , home of Patona. Great brand, great batteries. Need to keep in-touch on set/on location and will cheap walkietalkies do the trick for ya? Look no further then this little set of 2pcs Baofeng walkietalkies. Mmmkai. Getting a little carried away though, that should do for now. ? Will just leave you with 3 China store search engines that might be helpful and then just start browsing away... http://chinaprices.us / https://www.wholecheap.com / https://en.pandacheck.com.

  34. Wow, that is the most accurate summary of the MCU that I've seen. Like Scorsese says, they are not poorly made. Most MCU movies are clearly made with a lot of care and loving attention to detail, just not the details us snobs are looking for. Conveying "emotional, psychological experiences" is their antithesis. There's just the faintest scattering of storytelling: 3 acts, a villain, a half dozen callbacks to Act 1 in Act 3, and the rest is precisely a theme park ride. There is no attempt to communicate an abstract idea or feeling, all information presented by the movie is describing events as they occur, humorous one liners*, and information about the exact extents of a character's physical capabilities. And it's not that fantasy or blockbuster movies are necessarily theme parkish. The Lord of the Rings conveyed an enormous amount of emotion. The Star Wars prequels -tried- to convey emotion, but were hit or miss on execution. Nolan's Batman films were entirely character driven, delivering on the psychological experience moreso than emotional. *With the exception of Thor Ragnarok, and moments in Guardians, the one liners aren't even character-based. Any character could say any of the jokes and it would make sense. I'll also say that Thor is the only MCU movie I've seen that has recurring character jokes that genuinely advance our understanding of the characters and work off of previous content.

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Found a universal solution: place bounds *before resolution, and domain *after, with the same values. I've tested in Premiere, Resolve and FCPX. One caveat though - Atomos can only accept one definition. I haven't tested in Avid etc., so there will be a compatibility fallback option.

  36. No, the look is different, the new pocket 4k is worse... today's test: BMMCC - best colors and overall look , a little noisy picture, but the noise is pleasant. Moire problem. But overall he is the winner! (Slowmo 60p) at ISO 400 is slightly cleaner in the shadows. (Native is 800) . It is not a modern clear picture, but as a best film emulation. BMPCC (orig) - same as BMMCC but only 30p (a little more noise and moire than BMMCC) BMPCC4K - worse colors and overall picture is shifted to yellow-red? sharp highlights rolloff ? the picture is far more difficult to correct and color than the old pocket ? the picture is cleaner , but it gets a "video look" , The shape of the body is terrible. I gave a second chance and really didn't ... I put it back. GH5 - The best tool for run & shot - Worse colors than BMPCC4K but not much, excelent IBIS ! , battery life, adjustable display and viewfinder. Very economical codec for all day shooting. It's a winner if you need quick and comfortable shooting. It is a modern clear picture. Winner for RUN & GUN Shooting So everything stays the same, I keep GH5 for modern picture style, BMMCC for film emulation project. BMPCC4K - not necessary ?

  37. I know its taking approximately forever; I just added a feature that I think will be a significant step forward, people are going to love the practicality of it. A couple weeks ago I rewrote smoothing, and that was an absolute revelation. I also learned some interesting things, now that I've had a chance to do a new round of tests for the upcoming update: Premiere ProRes does not have a color space distortion - I originally assumed this was the case from using Alexa ProRes as my test material. This time, I tested FCPX encoded ProRes, and Atomos ProRes, and discovered that the problem is specifically with Alexa ProRes .mov files (scissor-like Vscope distortion). Other ProRes sources are fine in Premiere, FCPX, and Resolve (no new Pre will be needed here) DNxHD does have a distortion in Premiere Premiere can't accept Wide Range Luts. This will preclude P4K users from tapping into the entirety of the Highlight Recovery mode, now that BMD has added BRaw support to Premiere natively. This will also slightly impact the new feature I mentioned earlier. Neither of these issues are that major in the overall scope of things, but it may be worth making a request to Adobe to add support for this new type of look-up (it would be relatively simple to do in terms of code; it essentially took me a morning). Resolve, FCPX, and Atomos are all coded properly for it. There will be P4K news soon.

  38. I just saw this movie 20 minutes ago. Amazing. I think anyone who’s truly offended by it simply doesn’t live in the real world. As with many films and art in general it’s an exaggerated reflection of reality. He’s the bad guy, it’s ubdeniable, but you really see how and why he feels like what he’s doing is right. His judgements on the world around him are fully justified, his reaction, of course, is not. Throughout the film, I kept thinking of the saying ‘you can fool all the people sometimes, some of the people all the time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time’. For me, that is essentially the point in this film. There are many more themes and criticisms in the story too and I would highly recommend everyone to watch it. It’s not just entertainment. As for performances and the technical stuff. A+ on all accounts.
