I love my Voigtlander 17.5mm and am thinking about buying more, but at the end of the day it's about what your priorities are. If the zoom will help you get more shots, or capture the same moment in a better way (for example if you're not having to work around the fixed focal length) then maybe it's worth it for you to go to the PL zoom. Will the slower 1.7 aperture give you the DoF you are looking for? I personally like to shoot with primes over my 18-35 as I find the 18-35 too heavy as I hand-hold. I don't mind the total lens weight as the other lenses are in my bag and not hurting my wrists, but you are likely on sticks so don't have these issues. I'd suggest that the best way to answer is to get clear on your priorities and then see how the options stack up in light of what you're trying to achieve and how you're working. Ultimately though, if you're able to capture a better shot then that is very likely to completely eclipse the small loss of IQ you get by changing lenses. An average quality copy of a great subject is better than a high IQ copy of a boring final film!2 points

I have the 10-25. I've only had it a week now and i haven't had the chance to look at the results on 2 jobs I used it on but I really liked the feel of it. I got it to replace the Sigma 18-35 as it's native and lighter. I have kept my Voigtlanders as I feel they are complementary lenses, great for real low light, bokeh and a different look.2 points

Swap Voigtlander 17.5/42.5 combo for PL10-25/1.7?
sgreszcz and one other reacted to Video Hummus for a topic
I care a lot about the size and weight of my kit. Basically, if it's heavy or bulky it's probably going to stay home and I will use it less. I have the 10-25/1.7 and really enjoy having a lens that can go wider than the standard 12mm on a lot of zoom lenses. Quickly grabbing a wide and then a tight 50mm shot is fast and simple. Absolutely love the manual focus clutch (Panny should adopt this design going forward like Olympus). Build quality is excellent like most of the PL line. If the weight and size of your kit is a priority the 10-25/1.7 is a great addition. People compare it a lot to the Speedbooster + Sigma 18-35mm combo but I think thats a bit myopic of a comparison as it disregards possible future (and better) MFT bodies with better AF. It's definitely a lighter setup (and more balanced) than the sigma as well. Which really matters when you need it on a gimbal or just have to carry it all day. I would replace the 12-60 and the PL25/1.4 but keep at least the 42.5 Voigtlander. Those are nice, fast primes with character. GH5 has excellent IBIS so lack of OIS in the lens really won't be a problem. In my opinion, for Panny MFT cameras and native glass, the holy trinity is the: PL 10-25/1.7, PL 42.5/1.2, PL 50-200/2.8-4 With the Olympus 12-100/4 for when you have only space for one lens. On a side note: really looking forward to getting my GH5S on the new Weebill-S gimbal with this lens. Match made in heaven, maybe?2 points -
Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!

I’ve looked for this before and I haven’t found it. The metadata for video files in particular is just...pathetic. I wished it saved at least: the name of the lens (if recognized), if it was a VFR video, at least the focal length the video was started at, the aperture it was started at, and shutter speed/angle it was started at. It makes using features like smart bins / keywords in NLE or using Finder keyword searches useless Maybe someone knows more? UPDATE: Apparently this tool https://sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ will allow you to see this metadata but for some reason I don't see this in Finder or in Final Cut Pro or Davinci.1 point -
Ah...hang on. What I've just shot doesn't follow any of them apart from the lens bit. I hadn't actually read them as I was primarily just here for the heckling regarding the Soviet sphere of influence post World War II. Oh well, in the bin it goes.1 point

The SINGLE SOVIET PRIME LENS challenge
heart0less reacted to kye for a topic
What can I say - I value someone making something and sharing it rather than being a stickler for the rules. I finally put my 18-35/1.8 on ebay earlier today. If you were looking for a sign, this is definitely it!!1 point -
If you are looking for a single lens allrounder that can be alternative to your Olympus then adapting a Tamron 16-300mm f3.5-f6.3 might be worth thinking about. On a speed booster it becomes slightly wider on the short end (and has a lot more range on the long end obviously ) and a few stops faster. The speed booster also brings the f6.3 long end back to f4 as well so you won't be losing out there either and can just run it as a constant f4 if you want. I've just done this quick comparison on the P4K for you between it and the Panasonic 12-60mm f2.8/f4 (which is typical of the uncorrected wide end of the native lenses) so you can see the difference in the distortion at the wide end with walls and edges. EDIT>>>SEE POST FURTHER DOWN FOR RE-SHOT TEST Whilst the Tamron isn't exactly distortion free either, it shows far less than the Panasonic. Also, if you go in by a fraction (17-18mm unboosted versus 16mm unboosted) then it improves quite a lot more. Size and weight wise, its a bit less than the Olympus. https://***URL removed***/products/compare/side-by-side?products=tamron_16-300-3p5-6p3&products=olympus_12-100_4p0_is_pro It also has pretty decent stabilisation and the big kicker of course is the price as they can readily be found used for under £250. Its not without its faults (it isn't particularly sharp at the very long end but the speed booster does alleviate that somewhat) but as a run and gun all rounder it is a decent alternative.1 point

After using the Ninja V on a concert shoot this weekend, I'm feeling the pain of the micro HDMI connection. I had used the monitor a day or two before for a corporate shoot at an acupuncturist's office, and didn't have any problems with it locked down on sticks or with a bit of handheld to get b-roll. The first evening of a two-day concert event I got booked for, the mini HDMI end of the cable came out multiple times and the metal male insert ended up bending. I think a big part of the problem the 90 degree bend in the Atomos cable. It bends in such a way that it exerts pressure on the connection and basically "wants" to break it. And is so thick that the recommended SmallRig cable clamp for my cage doesn't fit it. I can't find a clamp that will work. Luckily, I didn't pay for the damn cable, I found a package deal from Adorama on Amazon that bundled the cable with the monitor for the normal price. I'm definitely going to ask Adorama to warranty the cable. Can anyone recommend a legit to mini HDMI cable with a straight emd that will record 4k 60 and isn't 10 feet long?1 point

GoPro Hero 8 worth buying?

When a new gopro drops its always super enticing. However it seems people will buy them, use them once or twice then never use them again.1 point -
Recent video I made with my GH5. Shot on the Leica 12-60 lens using a Ronin SC Gimbal. Graded in Resolve with Filmconvert and shot in Cine-D profile at 50fps with a Tiffen Black Satin 1 filter attached. Two years going and still think this camera is amazing.1 point

works been a bit slow which has constrained my purchases of late. I have bought a few cheaper items like some uv filters and a cheap hood for the tokina 28-70 some smaller step up rings for a project i have in mind but more about them once they turn up. i did get a hoya digital filter for the tokina. The interesting thing about that was i found a lens rental review on 21 different protective filters from 2017, some being uv, i guess most of you would have seen it however it was new to me. there's a link to it here for those that want to peruse it. https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/06/the-comprehensive-ranking-of-the-major-uv-filters-on-the-market/ ots. i probably need some time with full sun to compare filter verse non filter. Its spring in a couple of days here and the first flowers on the stonefruit are out.1 point

Smartphone shooting style vs traditional school
Katrikura reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
You are not going to walk around with a camera 24/7. Sure they can take a better shot if you are lucky to have it with you, and someone doesn't punch you in the face taking a picture of them with it, or they say you can't use it there, and you are skilled enough to use manual everything. Other than low light Smartphones now are almost fool proof. With Photoshop you can make anything look like anything now. Normal looking pictures taken with a "Real Camera" are old hat now. That has been done a million times. Spontaneous stuff is in because you can do that now. The average person doesn't care how perfect the horizon is, or if every thing is in focus now, they just want to see interesting stuff, not some staged shots people my age did 40 years ago. Sort of like video is is now, people want movement, to feel like they were there. They are not looking for perfection like years ago. That is why YouTube is so successful. It is fast paced, new maybe everyday, every week. It is exciting, on the move, not static as heck like normal cameras are. And very few people on there are actually very great at making videos, but guess what they have tons of followers because they are interesting, not perfectionist. Not using a Arri, they are using a GoPro, or a cheap Canon camera..1 point
