Transcode h264 footage for better quality before Resolve?
EthanAlexander and 2 others reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
Yeah, you're not going to get anymore out of the original file by transcoding. If anything you'll lose quality.3 points -
Phantoms (Suspense/Horror Short)

Hey everyone. Please check out my new short film Phantoms. Shot w/ Atlas Orion Anamorphics, Blackmagic Pocket 6K, and RED Dragon X 5K. For fans of Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann.2 points -
I think it's the old problem that the people who really know what they're doing are off doing it, rather than hanging around talking about it (or making videos, which takes way more time than even posting on forums).2 points

Ronin SC monitor mounting
EthanAlexander and one other reacted to Martin Matěj for a topic
Before I used Smallhd focus 5 monitor on Ronin S which was mounted on magic arm and was holding on a clamp at the bottom front of the Ronin handle: https://ebay.to/2OYO9Dx Now I use Smallhd focus 7 monitor with this mounting to Ronin S: https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-universal-wooden-side-handle-for-ronins-zhiyun-crane-series-handheld-gimbal-2222.html with https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-magic-arm-with-double-ballheads-arri-locating-pins-and-1-4-screw-2115.html And I think it's the best combo, the monitor feels so secure and you can change the position so easily. You could also mount some other things to the side handle. The possition of the monitor is better on the last picture because the HDMI cable is not in the way. You can do the same with Smallhd focus 5 inch.2 points -

Olympus E-M5 MK III - coming in October
Simon Young reacted to Dave Maze for a topic
Stoked to review the EM5 mkiii. Been using only the EM1 mkii with the new firmware the last few months and for the most part love it. I wish it had the button layout of a Canon 1DX or something...but other than that...I love the image I get out of it. The EM5 mkiii seems like basically a mini EM1mkii with minimal loss in ergonomics and battery life for a smaller and more compact size. I'll take it. Love it!1 point -
No it is not. Application is top -> down, e.g. at the upper position the cineD to vlog LUT has to be put.1 point

Transcode h264 footage for better quality before Resolve?
kaylee reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
It should be able to handle h264 without any problems. Worse case you can use proxies. As a rule though it's not ideal to transcode for editing unless you absolutely need to. Back in the day h264 and Final Cut Pro 7 didn't play well together at all, making it a real pain in the ass to edit, especially for large/multicam projects. I would transcode out of necessity back then. Now everything handles it well.1 point -
At least I get to keep my money in my pocket on this one. I'd love the improvements but not worth the cost to upgrade by any stretch. No these are not the same (OLPF is for anti-aliasing, ND is for cutting light). The variable part is a cool concept though that I've never heard of. I never really had any problems with moire/aliasing on the A73 unless I was shooting high frame rate HD so maybe this means it would have cleaner slow motion by being more aggressive, but turn off when shooting 4K or stills so it's even more detail than before? I'm just hoping...1 point

GoPro Hero 8 worth buying?
Dimitris Stasinos reacted to tweak for a topic
When new users sign up and the only thing they do is praise/condemn a certain product it always smells a little fishy to me... sure some might be genuine, but I doubt the majority are. Cheers to the real EOSHD forum users out there. ?1 point -

GoPro Hero 8 worth buying?
tweak reacted to Dimitris Stasinos for a topic
Some people have been using them for a longe time without serious issues. My worst experience was with the Hero 7. I lost almost a full day of shooting on a kayak. I had the latest firmware back then, a tested SD card formatted in the device and while everything seemed perfect the camera didn't record a single frame. Actually i pressed record many times as i didn't want to end up with a single file and i could see clearly the record status on the display.1 point -
i like it, nice job kye for some odd reason it doesn't play for me had to go to youtube to watch it. but i wont take any points away for that btw, next time you do a sausage sizzle i want in ?1 point

It's not only 8MP resolution and telephoto lens related. Take a look on this comparative sample coming from the 25.7-25.75mm (35mm equivalent terms) lens, even though not over the new 7T Pro version still to be provided by the usual gsmarena tool once not yet available there (iPhone 11 Pro Max 12MP sensor is introduced among them only as 3rd comparison term): https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=5&idPhone1=9846&idCamera2=300622&idCamera3=300600 Same Sony IMX586 48MP sensor. 7T 7 Pro1 point

GoPro Hero 8 worth buying?
tweak reacted to Dimitris Stasinos for a topic
This is just specs comparison. In real life OSMO action works like a charm with acceptable image quality in Cine D while GoPro cameras where always glitchy and unreliable. I can't tell about the new GoPro as i don't have it but Hero 4, 5, 6 and 7 where simply unreliable. Those bugs where never resolved so i wouldn't expect the 8th version to be better.1 point -
It's not surprising to me that being the newest one in the market, H8 has better performance than Osmo action in certain aspects, but I'm talking about the cost-performance here. Every time GoPro drops a new product, the specs and performance sound super enticing, however after sometime, all the glitchy and freezing problems crop up. Haven't got a H8 yet, maybe H8 will have much better user exprience than any other products... But we'll see.1 point

The camera slider is underrated
ntblowz reacted to barefoot_dp for a topic
Sliders are great for wides & establishing shots. I love the subtle parallax motion they introduce. My problem was that they just don't last; I've been through several sliders due to the conditions I shoot it (outdoors, salt water, dirt, etc). The tiniest bit of dust in the bearings can introduce all sorts of wobble or catching. Gimbals are heavily overused right now (along with drones) but that will hopefully pass soon, when the next new toy comes along (automated robot-legged tripods?). However they'll still have their place for certain situations. I think what separates gimbals from sliders is that you can use them for nearly every shot, so people get lazy and do just that. With sliders, they're too cumbersome to be used on every shot, so they get used sparingly for the shots that really deserve it.1 point -
The only benefit is playback speeds My i7 3770 from 2012 chokes on 4K h264 100mbps. But transcoding to DNXHR HQX and I get no benefit in quality, but my 7 year old processor that is slower than what is in the base model MacBook Pro now can edit multiple 4K files with a breeze. And my rtx 2060 handles the effects. So performance is smooth. But I have a time and space bottleneck You will get 0 quality benefit transcoding. But if your processor sucks, you will get much better playback.1 point
-
As above - you'll either lose quality or you'll make huge files. However, you'll make them way easier to edit, so that's worth something. 4K h264 files are a pain to edit with.1 point

The camera slider is underrated
EthanAlexander reacted to Mako Sports for a topic
I have a 12inch slider that gives me good results but I still hate lugging it around. So it gets used like once a quarter for me. My tripod is already heavy enough.1 point -

The camera slider is underrated
BenEricson reacted to Amazeballs for a topic
Sliders are not run and gun. Thats my issue with them. Gimbals are on the other hand. You can still mimic a slider with gimbal with some skill and moderate slowmo and maybe tilt axis post stabilization.1 point -
Balancing with natural light is fine but if the natural light changes then it can really trip you up, like on a day where the sun goes in and out of clouds. This may or may not be a concern (some places have blue skies 300+ days a year, so... ) For this situation I'd suggest renting a sound blanket (or whatever works) so that you can block out the natural light if it's being troublesome. This would mean you need a powerful artificial light, especially if you're bouncing it instead of using it directly, which is good advice. It would suck to start the shoot and not have a powerful enough light. If it leads to more work then you'll have some kind of commitment to buy something and you'll have more experience knowing what was required, both in terms of power as well as other factors, so you can choose a light that will work well for you and how you like to operate.1 point

Beginner Anamorphic
Carlostheepic reacted to leslie for a topic
you could get a russian nap for less than $100 most likely but you need to factor in lens clamps and such, after that the price just goes goes up. I think i spent about $300 for an elmoscope then more on a lens clamp and still more yet if i get a front mounted variable diopter. Anamorphics isn't really a cheap sport. i wouldn't recommend a nap, their big and heavy . a normal projection scope will be a lot smaller and lighter and easier to mount but need double focus or buy a fvd people that are selling on ebay generally know what anamorphics are worth, and its getting harder to find really good deals plus there seems to be alot more interest in anamorphics lately theres at least one facebook page for anamorphics however i find that people on there tend to think the anamorphic lens their selling is gold plated, so i wouldn't recommend facebook. for a good sale Of course its all relevant to your budget and what your willing to pay not to mention if you want buy something to shoot tomorrow or are prepared to build something over a longer term .1 point -
No idea, including if viable going along any extra app... However, it is possible to download 7T Pro samples (source: Android Authority) from here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1s4IVkkQmNtR6Jcgs_zBAG4EBdkFDup_t Maybe is there any clue from those samples? Didn't check, actually. Here's a new comparison with the new entry from Google vs OnePlus stock camera (not gcam):1 point

I followed the first one. This is precisely one more than I would usually follow. Story of my life.1 point

What 64MP? ; ) I've found the budget Redmi's 48MP offer pretty impressive coupled to Camera 2 API indeed. I guess their 108MP won't be less than the customary flagships to be sincere. Despite the utmost processing power of the tiptop chips available as usual happens. I don't find 64MP any of uninteresting, on the contrary especially when pixel peeped for checking resolution as due. Sharpness is not the better at any rate, above all when motion (or composition) is our target as we know. Other than that, you won't really notice nor need it, I'm afraid. Here's a curious comparison... 48MP still photo crop low light samples on: OnePlus 7T Redmi Note 7 64MP still photo crop low light samples on: Redmi Note 8 Pro Realme XT source: https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=5&idPhone1=9816&idCamera2=300572&idCamera3=300624 https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=5&idCamera1=300572&idCamera2=300624&idCamera3=3006191 point
