Canon 1DX III, FF 4k60p with 422 10bit internal
ntblowz and 4 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
No unconscious bias. Objective facts, yes. If Panasonic had released a $6K version of the S1H with no EVF, no articulated screen, no anamorphic mode, with a flippy mirror in the way, we'd all be going "eh" Not saying the 1D X III does not have benefits and is not a big improvement from the previous one.... But it's still limited by being a DSLR, huge file sizes in RAW, very high price, and fact there are much better options around for 10bit if you're ok with manual focus (as filmmaker you should be!) Foveon version of the Fp I very much doubt will shoot decent video due to how much extra data there is on the Foveon chip.5 points -
I'm really fond of my Osmo Pocket but as I mainly use it as a little travel camera, the last thing I want to be doing at my age is having to do some sort of ninja walking so I do have trouble with it when doing walking shots as it is prone to quite a lot of bobbing. So, I started looking at some of the Z axis add ons for it and found this one from Ulanzi. For £20 I thought it was worth a go so ordered one and it arrived yesterday. First impressions are that it is certainly lightweight enough not to be much of a hindrance to carry around. You pop the Osmo into the housing and it retracts back into the case to give it far better protection when travelling than the pouch case and you gently push it again to release it and it softly ejects like a decent quality cassette deck of yore. For fans of Alan Partridge, he would definitely declare this to be a "nice action" if he was viewing it privately in a local branch of Tandy. The base of the case also has a tripod thread which is a handy bonus. In terms of operation, you are provided with an allen wrench to adjust the tension of the spring and this will need to be varied depending on your natural walking style so its a bit of trial and error. One thing that bothered me a bit is that there does seem to be a bit of lateral movement caused by the arms seeming a bit loose but I don't think it would be too much of a problem to remedy and it didn't seem to impact performance too much. So, talking of performance.....is it any good ? Well I've only had a brief time with it and to say the weather in London was inclement when I was testing it would be an understatement but I would cautiously say Yes. Because the weather was so shit, I wasn't about to go stopping and starting and pissing about tweaking the spring tension with the allen wrench but even on the guesstimate setting I had it on it definitely took care of a decent amount of the bobbing motion. Here is a quick video I did to show it with and without and as I say with a bit more tweaking I'm pretty sure it can be improved even further. Obviously no special walking techniques where used in the making of this video other than puddle avoidance.3 points

Hate to spoil the $6000 Canon fanclub party, but I took delivery of the Sigma Fp today and glad to say the full frame 4K CDNG is incredible. Looks nothing like 8bit RAW... More like having 14bit Magic Lantern with huge dynamic range. Whatever they have done with colour science on this camera it is very clever. Remains to be calculated how large the file sizes are in 4K 8bit RAW mode internally. Massive I expect! Going to try the 12bit next via USB C to my Samsung T5. But the internal MOV ALL-I 4K is also very nice. Bitrate is a very high 400Mbit in this mode. It's a beast.3 points -

Regardless of RED and their business practices, Jim changed the landscape, disrupted the status quo, and helped push video/filmmaking forward. He deserves credit and gratitude for that. I just wish RED hadn't taken the path they took.2 points -

To each their own, I recently bought a C200 not expecting to use RAW that much but with the very simple workflow, USB-C speed & storage space coming way down, I'm finding myself shooting RAW as much as possible. It's kind of hard to go back to 8-bit after 10-bit but even harder once you start messing with 12-bit RAW. Having access to RAW internally at a flick of a switch is a godsend imo and brings me back to MLRaw days (minus the post workflow & reliability issues!). I have 2 Atomos recorders (including the V) and use them as monitors 95% of the time. Internal recording is the way to go for me. HEIC is also very interesting for stills giving basically 10-bit 4:2:2 vs 8-bit 4:2:0 for JPGs.2 points

Just won an Oscar but nobody uses it for video? From freesolo director: "What cameras and lenses did the high-angle team have in hand? On the walls we were shooting with the Canon C300s [Mark II]. Since I was directing and shooting, and also shooting a NatGeo story on top of it, I was filming with the Canon 1DX Mark II so I could film but also shoot stills. But everybody else was on the C300s. When we were up on the wall, we were using EF lenses, but when we shot vérité we often had the Canon Cinema Primes. The long shots from the ground up the wall were through the Canon 50–1000mm Cine-Servos. As you can imagine, that was a very critical lens throughout this film. Canon went above and beyond in their support of this film. We were very lucky indeed." They used 1Dx II also as remote triggered video camera, on the BTS you can spot them multiple time. They had custom made long range camera triggers build around Arduino and long range radio Again tons of pro photographer for Action and Sports do shoot video and many do with the same DSLR that we use for photo. It is not for you but the pro action and sport market is much bigger than the hobbits or limited budget video market and yes we shot video too2 points

Retires and shuts down the hydrogen project. https://www.newsshooter.com/2019/10/25/reds-jim-jannard-retires-shuts-down-hydrogen/ Sounds like bs, all of the bad press as of recent is far to much stress for a 70 yo man. Once they loose the raw patent it should only take a handful of years before they officially close their doors. Its what they get for years of shadow business practices and being the big bad bully.1 point -

I admit it. I am still mad that RED never delivered 3k for $3k. I hope that the truth comes out and that RED is either vindicated, if they have done nothing wrong, or pays the price for their actions if they have done something wrong. Either way, I hope Jim recovers from his health issues.1 point -
Sigma Fp review and interview / Cinema DNG RAW
Brian Williams reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Yes I am. Ordered from WEX yesterday, it's in stock. Cost £2399 with the 40mm. I am looking forward to proceeding in Resolve with my Sigma Fp footage as I've been doing for years with Cinema DNG from the 5D Mark III with ML. Was always very happy with the results. If what you say has a big impact on colour and white balance, hopefully Resolve can have support for Cinema DNG beyond just Blackmagic's own cameras... Don't make us go back to Premiere Good to know thanks.1 point -

Ι just don't want to imagine what our cine world would be without Jannard and his dream. When Sony was asking more than 100k$ for a 2k cine camera and Jim delivered an -unfinished and unprepared but marvellous- camera for 15k$ .... He was one of our breed's pioneers whether we like it or not. I really respect him and owe him a lot .1 point

Looking at the spec and trying to reconcile that much functionality with Canon's track record of holding things back certainly has me thinking "Trick or Treat" about that camera. I used to really like playing horror video games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill but have never really been interested in watching horror films for some reason. But then again, I would never in a million years eat a prawn cocktail but I'm quite partial to prawn cocktail flavoured crisps so I'm awash with contradictions1 point

Me too. I want an uncropped, full frame 4K60p 10bit tool. I can look past the lack of IBIS and ND filtration, but if I'm paying $6,000 i don't want any crop. Otherwise, I can just stick with an APSC Pocket 6K and have 10bit RAW 6K at 50fps. Yes there are some ergonomic and battery issues, but nothing that can't be addressed with < $500 extra.1 point -

While in Berlin earlier this month, I bought a Hydrogen, to see what it's like. Graeme Nattress and his engineering team at RED are good guys, what they achieved is and always will remain special. The Hydrogen has nice colour science by Nattress in 4K video and stills mode. It's got an interesting design, stands out around normal smartphones. I'll keep hold of it and maybe cover it on the blog some day. The 3D effect was not for me. Interesting technology, but some years off having the impact I expected from it.1 point -
looks like i will have one lens at least. I'm also downloading the 6.6 update for the bmp4k so i hope to give the anamorphic options a go as well.1 point

Same reason that they're not all screaming at Canon for lack of un-cropped 4K... Every brand has weaknesses, to expect otherwise is naive. Looks like another schizophrenic move by Canon: On one hand they don't want to be completely left behind and try to play the specs game by adding features for the stickers on the box But on the other side, the implementation will suck, it's probably going to crop and omit key video features to protect the cineline. In any case, who will buy this camera for the video specs? Pro sport photographers don't care about video. Pro video people can buy a real Cine camera at this price. Video enthusiasts and indie filmmakers won't be served by a brick DSLR cam (limited gimbal value), fixed screen, no video assist features... It reminds me the 1Dx2. The 4k60 on a FF camera was a big "wow" upon release. But then people realized all the dealbreakers: huge 800mbps file, no LOG, no video features, etc. I Haven't seen anyone using the 1Dx2 for video work: too big, to expensive, not video friendly, ergonomic designed for war and olympic games photographer.1 point

EthanAlexander reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
S1H is a much better featured cinema tool than 1DX III, that's just the truth. Way more going on with it. Much better ergonomics. You cannot even look through the viewfinder of the 1D X Mark III in video mode. Let's get real for a moment. Ok it has Dual Pixel AF. It has internal raw. It has 10bit. Nice colour. LOG. I commend Canon for those. I love the pro stills side of it as well, and the build quality, and the ergonomics for photography too. The lens situation I agree with... Things are stacked on Canon's side there. No contest. Panasonic's pricing is on the high side. Leica's is astronomical. Just to get a 50mm F1.4 is a big effort. This needs changing fast. Sigma L-mount glass is on the chunky side. It's DSLR glass, not a ground-up re-design taking advantage of mirrorless. That needs to change too. But there are some nice options out there for cheaper...Sigma 40mm F2.8 L-Mount, just an extra $400 with the Sigma Fp. There is the 1.5x crop APS-C Leica 23mm F2, turns your S1H in Super 35mm mode into a very capable run & gun tool, minimal size and weight, 4K/60p. On the Fp, that lens makes a nice replacement for an X100F or similar, for street photos, AF is ok. Price can be around $600 used if you search around for a while. Panasonic 24-105mm is a match for the Sony E-mount rival and about the same price. So it's not all bad. Well done you passed the math class. You can't just assume every new Canon camera takes a 1:1 crop of the sensor. Who knows what the 1D X Mark III will do. Pixel binning, 1:1, oversampling, it could be anything. Could even be 5K readout from 6K sensor and a smaller than 1.3x crop, like the old X-T2. You just don't know.1 point -

If you want pro photo and pro video in one body, this is it. No other camera gives you that, hence the price. As good as the s1h is, I don't want to be fiddling around with external recorders just to get raw. With the weather sealing etc, the places you can take this camera where you can't take others makes it all the more appealing and unique. The price is warranted. This thing is a BEAST.1 point -
Done. Just tested and right in time for a shooting scheduled for tonight. Thanks. A few AF tests performed with a cheap Lumix 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 in low light (6:45PM in Western Europe right now) EXT-INT (street buildings from town landscape to a monitor LCD inside the office only a few feet over there). Fast as a shark and damned accurate in any of my early tests. Much impressed and really improved. Looks like a different camera unit... 75 -> 25 fps adds something there as well. My fav modes from now on. Anamorphic modes, oh well, no need for additional comments. Any of this for the 6K model as well? Absolutely... perfect update : P Kudos to you BMD, you're definitely the camera manufacturer number one in 2019 -- who shoots with a Blackmagic won't want to look back ever again... what a tool! And a joy to play with : ) Simply anyone can operate with one. Easier than any of the usual suspects with those nonsense labyrinth menus totally unfriendly to the sake of the art. This is the way! Yeah best thing about the Canon ecosystem is obviously the EF range. Panasonic only has three lenses out for S1 (two F4 zooms & a 50mm!). The whole alliance thing is meh. Let's not even talk about autofocus performance or the monster sport photography specs. With internal RAW 4K the 1DX3 buries the S1H imho.. 1DX3 Full Specs: • New CMOS sensor • New Digic processor • New AF algorithm with deep learning • New AF sensor • 28x more resolution than the 1DX Mark II AF sensor • Focus over a greater EV range • Live View and movie AF with same algorithm as optical viewfinder system • Dual Pixel CMOS AF • 90 x 100% coverage • 525 selectable AF areas • New AF point selection control • Illuminated buttons • Dramatically improved battery life for LP-E19 • Better ISO performance • 10-bit HEIF files • 4K 60P • 10-bit Canon Log • Internal Raw video recording (once again, comes back to CFexpress) • Optical finder continuous shooting 16fps AF + AE / • Live View continuous 20fps AF + AE (with mechanical or electronic shutter) • CFexpress storage • 5x RAW burst depth vs 1DX Mark II • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (first time 1-series has built-in Wi-Fi) • Built-in Bluetooth low energy • Built-in ethernet transfer speed 2x fast as 1D X Mark II • New optional wireless transmitter will be 2x as fast • Weather resistant magnesium alloy body With the C500 mkII & 1DX3 announcements, Canon is certainly hitting it out of the ballpark on the high-end.1 point

Internal RAW and really good autofocus, which is good because historically this is the spec for Canon cameras for the next 10 years ? I'm more excited that HEIC images are being adopted outside the Apple ecosystem. It can be half the size of JPEG for the same quality ( or lossless ) and can have alternate display versions so an sRGB file for general viewing and then a 10-bit flat file for editing and that edit data can be kept in the file rather than as a sidecar or in a database.1 point

I can't think of any situation where going through all the pain of an upgrade would be worth it for half a stop of DR!! DR matters to me, but I do wonder what would be a significant enough bump to make me think about it.. This is an easy statement to make, but from a technical perspective that's a pretty big ask! I know what you mean, and I agree, but very high bit-depth RAW 24MP stills is a pretty high standard - not to mention the bitrates that go with that ???1 point

FS700 (with Shogun Inferno) Have been using one since 2014. Rigged up for shoulder-use, nicely balanced with the inferno on the back and a Kinotehnik EVF. 10-bit is a must for me for broadcast work (HD). I do some action sports so I need the slow-mo capabilities. 4K is good for commercial stuff but for 4K a good edit codec is essential. (Hence why I still prefer FS700 + Inferno over just bare FS5) I don't want to be screwing around with proxies or transcoding in 2019. Unlike 10+ years ago when it was pretty much standard to charge for a day or more just for tape ingests, clients today won't accept being billed for transcoding time if your camera is not edit-friendly. I told my self I won't upgrade until something comes along that offers internal 10-bit all Intra up to 4K120p and under 10,000 AUD fully kitted out. The UMP G2 pretty much ticks all the boxes but, once I add the VF, rig, media, etc it lands at around 12,000. So I'm just waiting until the price drops a bit or some used ones start hitting the market.1 point -
Panasonic GH3. More than good enough. I use a GH5 now for work, but I still can't bring myself to sell the GH3 (not that anyone would buy it). Great HD, battery life still solid, built like a tank.
