Iceland BMPCC4k
EthanAlexander and 3 others reacted to DanielVranic for a topic
Hi guys. This won't be a gear-related post, but more of just a thread to show you something important to me. This summer was rough. Fiance left, both parents got cancer, lost my grandparents and that is just the tip of the iceberg. So in July, i left. I packed a duffle and booked a studio apartment outside Reyjkavik for a week. Of course, I took my BMPCC4K. This is not so much a gear "look at how good my shots and coloring are" (kinda) but more I just wanted to share this place with everyone.. even if it is just a little slice. For the grade, I converted BMDFilm to Linear, CST to LogC, and from there use the Impulz Cineon process, using 5207 on input and 2383 on output and graded in between.4 points -

Ed, you could never hear from me that he or someone else is superior to anyone. For a simple reason if not else, I don't take success as a rank to classify people. Some other attributes are much crucial to my sensibility and judgement : ) I don't know details on the Lance Armstrong story and I surely don't take as granted everything I read on Internet. For some reason I'd rather take my filmmaking background over my, or anyone's legal realm any time. Courts are the most unfaithful jungles out there. It doesn't shock me at all someone to lie under oath if so. There are reasons beyond our own understanding more often than we should. Ah the public... Instead, shocks me to know there are innocent people under death penalty because the system or someone decided so. And nobody or too little care. I don't have how to believe in Santa. As far as Andrew's episode, I've tried to bring any humble potential I can, using diplomacy between such two sides I have a friendly connection with, only in order to not result any harm to any one. Because they simply don't deserve. Both of them. They know what I think. I hope to not be disappointed. We're discussing RED because we live in a free society and someone has opened a thread on topic : D On Hydrogen project, it's a hybrid, we can't say the cup is full but is different to be half empty. I've heard it's a product ahead of its time, more than a phone outdated each six months (E : -)3 points

LOL I wish Ed, believe me, I wish : ) Good one anyway : D Please don't let my dark side to pop up or we risk to wake up the tribe of a certain orange man ; ) and a few will jump here and begin to call me bad names as racist at a certain point I will need to start to apologize for the sake of my own reputation! haha ; -) Jokes aside, no, unfortunately, we are not in majority, at least with power to change the planet. We actually need to be with our eyes wide open in this contemporary universe we all live in, I concur. This is nothing new though. It's only to take a glance on History, the world has always been a complex riddle indeed. A wall BTW is just too flat, we already know is not the case of the (same) globe we all share ; -)2 points

You seem like a very nice, innocent person, Emanuel! I mean that as a compliment. Here in America, things are very nasty. People are nasty. Brutish. We are having a major class war. Many of us have a different view on billionares and job innovators. We distrust silicon valley. We distrust pharmacuticals. We distrust heads of energy companies and goverment leaders. We distrust the mainstream media. We distrust until we are proven right. We trust whistleblowers. We trust contrarians and outcasts and outsiders and artists and musicians and intellectuals and writers. We distrust the "great" figures of our past history. It's a crazy time to be alive. That the majority is like me. That we live in a topsy-turvy world. I do wish sometimes I could be like you, where I have trust in deeper trust, unbonding love for billionaires and leaders. But for me, that's over. This is the era of #metoo and subversion and anger at the leadership class. The world is dying. The planet is dying. Due to billionares not using their money to do the right thing. People like the Koch brothers who use it to destroy the planet. This time is now. BYE! I need to stop responding to you. I feel like I am talking to a wall. I rather be playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild.2 points -
I think using right angle HDMI and USB-C connectors and channeling them upwards would alleviate any concerns I'd have about it but its early days yet anyway so no doubt cages with clamps will be along before long. Also, if you are only recording internally, then as the live streaming video above shows, the FP is a UVC compliant device so you will be able to plug it into your phone and use that as a monitor with any number of UVC apps.2 points

Hey, I am sure some one is smarter than me but I have a general failure of understanding how to handle multiple framerates in Resolve 15 (in the same project). The way they SET fps in the beginning is totally retarded, they should do this for timelines but not projects. Here is the Setting: Event shoot, different cameras, different framerate, several Interviews = audio sync-up cluster fuck. Export should be 25fps, How do you do this? So I started an "interview bits" project that needs to be 50 otherwise the audio does not sync up. Matched the audio with the 50fps easy no trouble. Now I can only export in the same framerate. But I would also like to put b-roll (different fps) over it and so on... I mean the main trouble I am having is that I would like my project setting to be 25fps and work with several timelines (different fps) to then bring together a fine piece of 25fps. It seems that my only two options are: 1.convert clips to same fps with Handbreak etc. beforehand and hope audio sync works later. or 2. to start three different projects 25fps, 50fps and 59,94fps export the respective clips an then try to muddle it up in the 25fps project, which seems bad practice imho.... How would you go about this? Any experience in this? THANK YOU VERY MUCH!1 point

I've worked with multiple frame rates in Resolve for a while now, so I'll see if I can help. This is my understanding of how it works and how I use it. I start with a Project at the same frame rate that I want the finished video to have, for me this is 25fps. Then I create one (or more) timelines in that project, and they will default to the same frame rate. In v16 (which I am using now) you can also change frame rates on timelines individually through Timeline Settings and there's a button that lets you customise them individually. Then I just drag all the clips onto the timeline. When you do this, Resolve puts them all on the timeline in real-time, ie, if you recorded in 50p and drag it to a 25p timeline the video will play in real-time. If you exported that then the output video would have every second frame of the 50p clip. If you want to slow the 50p down to 25p (and therefore play at 50% speed) then you can do that on the timeline through Clip Speed, as well as the various speed ramp type functions. I believe you can also set the speed in the clip in the Media Pool and then when you add it to the timeline it goes in there at 50% normal speed, but that's not how I work. In terms of sound, when you have a clip on the timeline that isn't at real-time then Resolve does a time-stretch on the audio automatically. The effect is good but has its limits. In terms of syncing sound I've never really tried to do it so can't comment on that part. The way that Resolve displays FPS all through this scenario is rubbish and completely confusing, so I ignore FPS on everything except the Project, Timeline, and Source Clip. If I'm doing anything that involves all three of those not matching then I work in percentages. When exporting you can just set the export settings to your target output frame rate and it should work. I haven't tried to output a different frame rate than my Timeline so there might be issues there that I'm not aware of, but that's what's worked for me. Hope this helps! BTW: why did you film an interview in 50p?1 point

If I spent $1300 on a phone that was promised as a revolutionary way to control the red, and then it didn't. Then promised I would get a deal in return for the hydrogen 2. Then told that the hydrogen 2 is over and that the president and backer of the hydrogen 2 is retiring, I would be very, very, very upset. You maybe extraordinary in how you treat red. You may also be confusing the company with a form of friendship and community that overrides any anger and loss if you lose thousands of dollars. Personally, I think, and would argue most people would think - that cameras should just be products, not groups of friendship . That way they cannot do these type of business practices and get away with it. Imagine people forming a community around a brand of a hammer. But of course, I get it. We are all very tribal. You are personally (online) friends with the president of the company. I would be defensive as well if I think that the company's president is my friend. That is all okay. I completely understand. I never got to that point with Sony or Canon or Convergent Design, even though I got to know a few key employees. But I didn't talk up when they did some things I wasn't the biggest fan of either. I just don't give so much importance to such case because of my point of view on these two people. I am in touch with Jarred for a decade and a half now. He's a good man, this is something I really praise from a human being. Jim Jannard can look like a bit more distant -- that label of a billionaire doesn't help either : ) but at a certain point I wonder what is real, what is myth. Jarred's best friend can only be as friendly as him. Used to evaluate character of people from my five decades now and almost three since the end of my teens, a quarter of century in this industry. I assisted the bashing of his persona to the limits of nonsense on cinematography forums only because he is R-I-C-H (c'mon!) and he resisted, always polite. I was there. I like him. Really. I'd be dishonest with myself if I'd act as Simon (aka Saint Peter) did : ) I don't see our class of people involved in this business as some ethically above the average. I never stop to remind me Giuseppe Tornatore when he before to come to this playground thought people here can only be good people much earlier to realize only the movies are able to show or tell the truth. Comes to my mind now F for Fake by Orson Welles and out of curiosity made with Gary Graver aka Robert McCallum on many golden age hard core pieces. Of course, it's a 2nd angle on the same subject. No doubts on that. You know as filmmakers, we always tend to believe there are multiple perspectives on the same dimension and different layers there in fact : -) Let alone something so serious as reputation is. Thanks for your care on your words and consideration about myself as individual -- that counts to me : ) I've tried to put RED to not turn the back to Andrew for the contributor but also the human being he is. Thanks for your response, Emanuel. I have spent time as a cinemotography with a lot of interesting people. I worked on a doc with a murderer of two people (he was an armed robber_ as we filmed him coming home from jail. He was super nice, super sincere. A really nice person. I worked with the CEO of a major corporation responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people due to his policy that goes against most ethical standards. Again, really, really nice. Very mellow. Nothing weird or evil about him. No conflict from what I could tell. We talked about personal matters that you could do with anyone. I'm not equating Mr. Jannard with these men. But I do know lying under oath in a federal court is not something most people will do, who have normal forms of ethics. This is punishable in jail by at least 8 years in a federal prison. Nor is it normal for most people in a position of power to ask an underling to lie and risk this amount of prison time for their own profits. The implications of Lance Armstrong's doping - if you can do yourself a favor to learn about it. You'll learn that it involved millions of dollars and more than just lying and cheating for money, he ruined lives in the process. As you say, "but what about the migrants?" There's always something worse. But it doesn't make it okay what Jannard did. Intimidating an employee into lying and risking a prison sentence is not something any of us should ever do in life. It's highly illegal. And again, he should not be celebrated, for that fact alone. What type of people should be celebrated? How about Dr. Fossum who invented the CMOS sensor? We wouldn't be where we are with CCD sensors. How about the people at Kodak who invented digital cameras? So many other figures with so much importance. So many true innovators. Why must we focus on Jim Jannard and Jarred Land and their Barnum-like antics? Their shutting down and silencing of oppositional viewpoints. Of publically shaming and DOXing and suing people who questioned them. (Look into Jim's final post on reduser where he called out 2 prominent cinematography figures). It goes on and on. Be well Emanuel. I hope for yourself, as an ethical person, you can empathize with how this person should be viewed.1 point -

I really rate the Sigma colour profiles. They have carried over some Foveon skills into this image processor. The standard profile looks very natural, and the main thing Vivid does is give you a warmer look, a more Canon-like look - rather than just increasing the saturation of standard. Uniquely you can dial up and down a profile overall from -5 to +5, blending with standard at -5 and increasing the difference at +5 The teal & orange "Hollywood" profile is not overdone and nicer than the cinema profile. The cinema profile suits very specific shots. The T&O looks good on almost everything. Beautiful. Although there is not yet a LOG profile, the Sigma Fp product manager is from Samsung - I don't expect their run of firmware updates to hold back on new features!! NX1 owners will know what I am talking about! The nod to Magic Lantern with 8bit Cinema DNG is as much a statement of intent, as it is a beautiful image. I am in love with this camera.1 point -
I've been used to appreciate your care on the effort put in your flags and dedication to your craft, I think you know it. BTW I hope one of these days to gather a chance for some collaboration together as hinted by some other user among us a while ago as virtuous documentary filmmaker you are : ) I don't see anything B&W. People are not perfect, obviously. But from angel to demon there's a huge gap in-between. The man I know he's an exceptional human being and very talented business man and ingenious developer, not a con artist. Sensitive and a decent guy. I speak by my own experience and from many others and someone's else stories I've heard as well. I obviously can't comment on that Lance Armstrong episode. But even that doping ethics, that doesn't break my heart either : ) Frankly, there are things which hurt my feelings much more serious such as refugees and migrants condition of nowadays, as for instance. There are people suffering if not literally dying to simply dream with a new life in the rich West and what are we doing? We elect crooks without a single respect for human life only to put them out of our sight. This is morals and ethics we should all concern about. This matters. Really. This has a direct influence on people's lives. I don't praise anyone without a solid background from my own experience and that coming from colleagues, co-workers and friends. How about we just cut to the bone? Let's see the terrible color science of the BMPPC 4k/6K, versus the sterling results you're getting from the S1H. And, maybe post your best grade of the S1H material -- something for BMPCC 4K/6k loyalists here, if any, to try to equal, All that's needed is two identical log shots, both exposed more or less equivalently, at their nominal native ISOs. It sounds like you've got access to both cameras, and it can't be any more time consuming than contributing to this forum. And might actually lead to something useful.1 point

Dude, you're talking about everything and anything. Working backwards: 700 lines is about all you'll get in a movie theater, from a 35mm print There's a white paper online you can search for, if you're interested, among other sources. It's not a controversial observation. "LOL". There is no ACES transform for the BMPCC 4K in Resolve, so it's not surprising you don't like the results. Again, your "color science is weak", etc. is typical internet-speak, where unsubstantiated claims vie for attention. One week it's the BMPCC 4K which is plastic and over-smoothing, then it's the S1H which blurring detail. Next month, it's the BMPCC 4K which is too sharp, unless you prescription for downsampling is followed. Or Premiere is 8 bit and Resolve is 32. Until not. This stuff never stops, I guess it keeps the forums going.1 point

I would offer that for matching shots (the majority of most grading work), adjusting white balance in sensor space (or even XYZ as a fallback) and exposure in linear makes a huge difference to how well shots match and flow. I see many other colourists claim they can do just as good white balancing with the normal primaries controls, but i think if they actually spent considerable time with both approaches instead of just one they would develop a sensitivity to it that would make them rethink just how 'good' the results with primaries are. Its one area i think photographers experienced with dialing in white balance in RAW files develop that sensitivity and eye to how it looks when white balance is transformed more accurately - more so than those in the motion image world who still aren't used to it. I've been a fan of Ian Vertovec from Light Iron for quite a few years, and I was not surprised to learn recently that he likes to do basic adjustments in linear because there was something in his work that stood out to me (including his eye/talent/skill/experience of course).1 point -

You are missing the point. S1H form factor is unique amongst the other approved Netflix cinema cameras. If an Arri is your A-cam, It could be used as a B-cam. And not rating an S1H's image highly or using an S1H yourself just because an Alexa Mini exists, is the most stupid reason ever to dismiss a tool. For a start, it is $54,000 cheaper. Do you personally have a Netflix size budget for your work? If so, your opinion is first hand. If not, you're a speculative sofa surfer, basically trolling. Throwing rocks at something which plays in the same league as an Alexa Mini for $4000, which doesn't seem very clever to me.1 point -

Sarah Dietschy just put together her doco setup with a P6K and a P4K, using the MFT lenses from her GH5 for the P4K and borrowing some EF lenses for the P6K but will likely re-buy the EF glass she sold when she went Sony. She also went Resolve-only for a month and will likely be using Resolve for editing the doco footage she'll potentially be shooting in Braw. This is kind of a big deal as although she started off with two BMPCCs, she transitioned to Sony and was a big fangirl for them for years.
