Sigma Fp first shots - how does internal 8bit RAW compare to external 12bit RAW?
heart0less and 2 others reacted to Brian Williams for a topic
This isn't going to sell the camera to anyone, but I will say, having completely written off the 8-bit raw before I even got the camera, I was intrigued by the article here to give it a go, and while you can't push the grade like you can with the 12-bit, having the benefit of being able to adjust the white balance after the fact is really great, and I'm totally sold on using the 8-bit. Just sucks that a fast UHS-II card with a fraction of the capacity is more expensive than a 500gb T5. (Or half-glass full, awesome that a T5 is cheaper than a fast UHS-II card with a fraction of the capacity!) Shot with the Sigma MC-21and the Canon thrifty fifty (which is a horrible combination btw, the slowest focusing I've ever seen, they're both going back). Works great in manual. Looking forward to some stabilized L-Mounts.3 points -

The Viltrox only has the issue with the BM cameras so isn't an issue on other MFT cameras. Panasonic don't make it easy to do this kind of integration because it doesn't allow for a lens to be sent to a specific position. It only allows for two different offsets (+/- 1 step and +/- 10 steps) so requires a different approach entirely to keep everything tracked accurately. However, I have already written stuff to do that so it is possible to port it into a standalone app if there is enough interest. I've made some hardware changes to the little controller (bigger screen, much bigger battery capacity) so its slipped due to that but also due to incorporating the Nucleus Nano functionality into that as well. In point of fact, the Nano support was done in the controller first and then ported into the 3C app Just getting final case design done to accomodate the hardware changes and it will be available for pre-order in a few weeks.2 points

I wholeheartedly agree with your view. I shoot wedding mostly and my main focal is 50 and 100 but I will always have another tele in my kits no matter what. You never know when you have a photographer with 35mm during ceremony or bunch of guest with iphones. My idea of minimalism is the least amount of gear to get the job done, not trying to make it work with whatever because I'm too lazy to bring another 1kg.2 points

First off, user sanveer, your typo brought the wrong member here. Better to pay attention to correctness, you know? The content follows. So, we're trolling unless we become silent? When an old member in this forum has a different opinion or anyone can see some unfairness to be written or produced. Is that so? You're not the only entitled to express a view. Otherwise, it is tyranny. Some people have conveyed their disapproval on RED business practices, without mention an attack towards someone outside who are not even here to defend himself. Mentioning facts with reputation damages but where are the evidences other than the mere territory of opinion making? No matter how you feel about him. Fueling some past issue with the webmaster here, innocent in all this mess as I had the chance to directly write to someone lurking in the serious stuff written in these pages. A public place is not private communication. Is that the way you recognise your appreciation to the owner of the site? And you act in behalf of this (free) forum? BTW what contribution you've added to help to solve and handle the trouble? None of our business, isn't it? Consequences don't knock to our door, correct? ; -) To persecute someone is instead what you're claiming. Blanked about you, I think I remember I've once heard you saying in these same pages about your legal background if my memory serves now. And I haven't listened a sole entry on legal aspects to address the matter, though. To make a point to not fit our perspective is then something forbidden under your depreciation? What about your reactions to click one post yes, one post not, along this thread? : D Why intensively? Didn't you like the number of my paragraphs or the countless basics of my point? LOL So I end accused by you to be a troll? Of course, in your mind I see what you read there is annoying. Save your opinion to your posting as it is your single right in a free forum. We should all have the same open chance to demonstrate our perspective. In the free world, there's a name for it: right of reply aka right of correction. Not only those ones who serve our proposal. That's how a free society or community works. For some reason I seconded a disapproval on banning policies only because we can think differently. On that, I, Ed and many others share the same vibe and principle. You should read better my balanced reasoning rather than willing to exclude me here only because you dislike a good part of my words you read coming from the 'other' side. Let the others tell what they feel at the same time. Give them their chance without trying to embarrass or somehow restrict their point attacking or killing the messenger. Worst, because there's a distinct way of thinking. Disgusting if I can write it in a single word.2 points

So, I've been kicking this around for a while and have now found some hardware that I think is worth pursuing it with in terms of quality and more importantly latency. Tying it into the 3C app with its new Title Nucleus Nano integration, we have this. With this setup you can have all the usual 3C stuff of focus control, full parameter control, setup memories etc with the focus wheel and low latency live view from the camera. What I'm evaluating is whether it is worthwhile me dedicating more time to in terms of progressing it as whilst its fully operational right now its a bit clunky to setup. The question I have really is that whilst I hear a lot about people wishing the Pocket4K had remote live view capability, what is the reality in terms of how many of you would actually use it and more importantly how much people are actually prepared to pay to add this functionality on to their cameras ?1 point

DJI Mavic Mini just landed...
Emanuel reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
The absence of other features I understand, given the limitations and compromises needed to make such a small drone. Not allowing 24 fps though feels like they're blatantly crippling the drone's capabilities so lower budget filmmakers have to spend more if they want 24 fps. I'm all for offering a low cost option, because like I said in a previous post not every release is geared/targeted for us and that's okay. But removing something like that feels very petty and a play straight out of Canon's playbook.1 point -

Yeah, I totally could, it’s just that being able to ditch the SSD hanging off the side of the camera is the main pull for the 8-bit raw; if I have the SSD attached, I feel like I might as well go ahead and shoot 12-bit.1 point -

I think this is amazing that you're working so hard to bring new features to the camera, and I'm sure many people will love the option. That said, for me personally, I only used the remote live-view on my GX80 for the first time yesterday - had it for like 3 years. However, if you're a 1 man crew setting up for an interview, this could be amazing. You sit int he chair and check focus and framing before the talent are anywhere near. Then you can have this setup in your lap to keep an eye on what the camera's seeing, without making it too obvious that you're checking the camera. - - you can almost pretend that you're just checking to make sure you've covered the topics you need or something haha.1 point

Panasonic S1H review / hands-on - a true 6K full frame cinema camera
thebrothersthre3 reacted to deezid for a topic
That was my Lut for the Pocket 4K which for some reason is quite close to a V709 conversion which I used on the S1 clip. AlexaX-2, IPP2 Rec709, V709 and probably other Rec709 compatible conversions have many things in common: Great color definition Great tonality No or a very light color cast Smooth roll-off Even colorful lights are rolled off properly The standard BMD V4 Extended conversion on the Pocket 4K at least looks entirely different. And inside ACES the camera performs even worse. Tried to make P4K samples (around 100) look like corrected using my Lut but can only come relatively close. Can't really match it entirely, since there are too many hurdles to begin with. Maybe if I invest more time into developing it...1 point -

My view of minimalism is that you don’t have things you don’t need, but that you still do have the things that you do need. I think this is a misconception that people have about the whole movement - that you’re meant to be happy with what someone else thinks is the right amount of stuff, or that somehow less is better. No minimalist would ever find themselves in the desert saying that not having water was the best idea, or being outside their apartment and not having their keys is a good idea!1 point

No, as impatient as I am to get one, I'm going to Japan in February and the price differential (FP with 40mm is £2400 in the UK vs £1500 in Japan) is just way too stark for me to not wait for a couple of months. Plus, in the intervening period there is enough time for a few used ones to show up there which will mean another chunk of money off and also enough time for some of the rough edges to be knocked off the early firmware.1 point

Yeah, the Production 4K is a nice camera but I don’t know if it’s worth a swap from the BMMCC. As much as the crop factor annoys me, there are some benefits with some c-mount lenses I own. I think my point was that I think minimalism is underrated around here and in my equipment closet. For some, if you have the need, or the means, why not have a few cameras and a slew of lenses... I probably would if I was in that situation but I’m not. I’m a hobbyist that have always wanted to make movies. I’d love to get an FP, but it would be a second camera right now. I feel the same way about the S1H. It’s an amazing camera, and in some ways it would probably be more fun to shoot with than my 5D3. I don’t know, maybe I’m just easily impressed, but I am still enamored with the images I am getting from my 5D3 and ML Raw and I don’t feel I’m missing out on any IQ based on any newer cameras on the market... that I can afford. In fact, unless the ML team has a breakthrough with the 5D4 or EOS-R, I could see myself going straight to a proper cinema camera after my 5D3 runs its course... barring any surprises from Canon... 1DX Mark III or the 5D5. With that being said, and to stay on topic... I think the Micro is an amazing little camera, so I am going to keep it for a bit longer and give it a fair chance, with my sensibilities, before I sell it... unless a quick and easy and profitable sale comes my way from this thread. Lol. Btw, did you get an FP yet? If so, what do you think? I think you mentioned this before, and I agree, the FP seems like a full frame, spiritual successor to the Micro... with the a screen.1 point
-
Does the Production 4K not potentially represent a sweet spot for what you're after? EF, Super35, ProRes, Global Shutter, cheap media and the majority of the stuff I've seen shot with it properly looks pretty compelling. Odd but not insurmountable ergonomics. The price the two systems change hands for used now means you might even make a small profit swapping out the Micro for one or at least break even.1 point
-
ETTR is suitable for raw and uncompressed formats. Just be careful going by a histogram alone. If you have zebras, set them in the range of 95%-100%, and use them to determine your upper limit and to choose which parts of the image may or may not blow-out. Waveform is also good for finding the upper limit.1 point
-
I am guessing the Pocket 6k uses a similar sensor to the Fuji XT3. However its raw isn't like what the Fuji can do stills wise. I am guessing its the 12 bit readout vs 14 bit. Although in stills the Fuji gets about 13.5 stops which isn't 14. Still that is more than I could ever imagine needing. I can pretty much shoot directly into the sun and get a well exposed image. My XT3 in video's dynamic range gives me most of what I need though. I am guessing that extra stop I'd get from an S1 or Ursa Mini would be sufficient.1 point

See for yourself, download the samples from my blog: https://blog.presstige.sk/post/187207698230/bmpcc-4k-raw-vs-panasonic-s1-v-log-i-just-did-a After three months of shooting with the BMPCC and the S1 I would pick the S1 over the pocket any day. I'm not saying that the pocket is a worse camera, but the S1 really got the edge with the slightly better dynamic range and usability. I don't own an S1H but I suppose it's almost the same when it comes to 4K 10bit. Bottom line: no bashing here, i love both cameras1 point

Here's Mr. Deezid's grade -- or something or other, no idea why he offered the shot here as he does -- of an S1 v. BMPCC 4K shot, kindly provided by another participant. See that brown potato quality of the BMPCC 4K and the wonderfully "organic" quality of the S1? https://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/34763-panasonic-s1-v-log-new-image-quality-king-of-the-hill/page/25/#comments You can find my own basic adjustment (not grade!) of these two shots a few post down in that S1 thread. Still no sign of brown potatoes v. organic wonders, but maybe that's because, unlike some here, I'm not a professional colorist?1 point

No, I could NEVER infer that from women, I love them! What I told you was the fact we didn't know both sides of the story. All story has two sides as we all know : ) At times, we tend to forget because of our passionate views ; ) I profoundly condemn domestic violence or any kind of unjustified violence. Let alone with helpless ones! The point is at times the accuser is the offender. Two to three decades of legal perspective helped me to conclude that. I've just checked our friendly exchange of private messages between us and that was what I wrote to you. Here is an excerpt of my text then: "Another note... don't believe in everything a supposed victim of domestic violence says about the aggressor. Because at times, she/he can be the first aggressor instead. Only to proclaim to be the victim in the end." Take a 2nd glance there: "she/he" (and 'she' came first in that context, because the accuser was a 'she', only because of that). You can't obviously know my life as me yours but for your information, I've already spent time and money to help people as someone working for me offering legal services totally pro bono. From my own. In 100%, not even my business related. Which means I give it because of what? Injustice. I am very sensitive with that. I tend to jump when I immediately see anyone who can require that from my side. My worldview is very particular of my own, of course. There are things I agree with you, some others don't. Something you'll never hear from me it will be to intentionally disrespect someone else because he thinks different of me. I am not perfect, nobody is. I try to guide my life and ethics for principles, though. RED related, I have partners and close friends who are active redusers, I've already been too. Not so lately because of my recent investment options route. For some reason I am here. Without mention I have a friendly relation with the company and people there for years since the early beginning. And yes, I am loyal to my friends : ) As I could tell you before, I've had the chance to personally meet them and I've even collaborated with them in the past to organize their presence in one of the towns where I operate (Rome, Italy). I understand you have a negative opinion. I don't mind. It's not even my business. I think you're obviously entitled to be a critic of your choices. Nothing against that. I just beg your pardon to not infer abusive considerations about me or whoever else. As same as I do with everyone, even myself if I got my mistake when happens. We all commit errors for sure. Judgement is also a very sensitive matter. Nobody is infallible, that includes the Pope too! : -D PS -- LOL You retracted your post again! You're a danger! haha : ) I had to quote you this time to not play the part of a fool! : D Happy halloween to you too! (E : -)1 point

I’m very interested to know how this thing holds up as a stills camera. Or rather as a hybrid flipping between the two.1 point

Ed, I can understand you have your reasons to complain on their business practices and marketing. Nothing against. They are not perfect. Nobody is. The fact I can concur with one or another points of your criticism, this doesn't mean I am totally there. On the contrary, I think it's clear I actually see your description too dark to match reality to tell you quite frankly. My participation on reduser is utterly public so you're entitled to evaluate by your own : -) Marketing or other issues in the way the brand runs their forum is absolutely responsibility of the administrators of the site. It's their choice. I don't think it is much different of some others. OK, RED sales are based in that community in a way other manufacturers were not able to build up. I guess it should be more as a Jarred's achievement than the reverse. I realize you don't agree but did you mind to already ask to some other contenders of their own? I did and believe me, Jarred would love to listen the feedback I've heard through these years. And Jim, a positive vote or recognition of the certitude of his bet if he needed to hear, I doubt. Life is not B&W. And a lot of what I'm reading there in your post now it is completely new to me. I can't surely confirm or deny what I obviously don't know. My private communication with RED people or other users is 100% personal and responding on your inquiry, because there's nothing to hide, such contact is made from unilateral relations, there are no facebook groups where I had ever participated. I don't even use it. Seems a bit ridiculous to have to mention but once you ask, I don't mind to answer you as direct as you address your questions. My business and friendly ties with people there, it is merely based on personal empathy of our own towards each other. As natural as any other particular communication we have with friends made along the life of all of us. Living close or abroad. I bet your case, as well : ) For your information, any camera discussion related, RED included, is even secondary in our talks. Hope this helps to satisfy your curiosity at least as far as myself concerns about my RED connections : D PS: LOL I see you've deleted your post. Too late, I'm sorry, once mine is posted now : ) Chill out man, it's agree to disagree here. No rocket science to see. Only your imagerie and talent matters to me. Debate should always be welcome to have something to learn no matter how much we can diverge : ) On something we can concur though @Ed_David, to ban discordant voices or yes men in any cult not even blessed by my church! : P Free spirit stands as our utmost stronghold.1 point

All compressed video has some curve baked it. With ETTR, you 'fill the well' of your sensor and 'avoid the noise floor', but depending on the said curve (picture style), you may also have thinned out your values. The common S-curve will also try to avoid the noisy depths and favor skin tones, midtones. By not exposing to the center, you risk getting very doughy skintones when changing that curve in post. At least with 8-bit, but also with 10-bit, it's possible that the one shot you need has too little definition in the areas that count (usually the skin), and you are forced to de-grade the good shots to match the worst. Especially when you shot in very bright places. For 8-bit, it's a good idea to light flat. ETTR is a no-brainer with raw. Then even zebra suffices. 1 point
