  1. 2ndhand tungsten lights So many people are getting rid of excellent film lights which used to be staples workhorses of the industry, because people are moving over to newer tech

  2. Sun flare is part of lens characteristic. While my zeiss milvus is bloody sharp with a good dose of micro contrast, the coating eliminate any short of sun flare whatsoever. during bridal shot I like to use canon 50mm f1.2 to get that crazy sunflare.

  4. no... i suffer badly from procrastination just watched some youtubes on resolve 16 not really knowing what i'm doing, here's the second ever mini production. I even had a go at grading, next time i might add some transitions but i need to play around a lot more. I can crash resolve pretty easily, i presume i need to throw more ram at it. Having said that 16.1.1 worked better than the 15 i had before and seems to work flow better after watch some youtubes for me anyway. feel free to comment. i need to learn one way or another. shot in the back yard quite late, three static tripod mounted shots, bmp4k, russian lomo 40mm triplet, raw 3 to 1 compression. Interestingly there's a 191 Mb difference between h.264 and h.265. You guys got h.264 ? A cheap toshiba 32 gig card from woolworths worked surprisingly well with braw 3 to 1, with dng's i could get 35 seconds braw easily doubled that. would like to know how you guys shoot into the sun for flares ? i had a go at it but it ended badly maybe i need to stop down perhaps. more youtubes and experimenting i guess Untitled1.mp4 here's a pic of the adapters i had, the left is m42 i did have a m39 to m42 step up ring but when i mount the lomo lens theres no infinity focus with the l39 adapter i can achieve infinity focus. as you can see theres quite a size difference.

  5. I'd suggest a used Lowel DP. You can use them with a 1000w or 500w bulb. 1000w gives you a ton of light. Keep in mind where you'll be using it, obviously won't look great mixed with daylight. But yeah can't really go wrong with those lights. Will last forever and provide a ton of high quality light. They are also pretty dirt cheap used. Combine with a dimmer and you are good to go. Avoid the omni lowel lights, bulbs tend to burn out easily and they are just not as good.

  6. thanks @mercer coming from you, thats high praise indeed ? honestly i think it must be beginners luck I watched one dudes youtube on how he grades, he's called the loam ranger. He does mountain bike riding and uses a gopro, he likes to shoot flat as possible. I just copied what he does with his footage and applied it to mine. Even then i forgot to adjust the sharpness and i dont think i changed the contrast, just moved the colour wheels and upped the saturation a little. I have to confess i like late afternoon a lot, the sun has less bite but has more oomph i think, and its a tad easier to see the screen. Plus the wind has usually died down abit. Now that i have dipped my toes into the shark infested waters, there probably will be a whole slew of videos pop up ?

  7. Cine D and V show as blank. There's a definite change in the style (though it seems contrasty and dark compared to how Cine D looked on the GX85, so working as in it changed, but possibly not to Cine D/V). 709Like puts the camera in standard. Update: I went back and tried some older versions of the html files and the MOV version. I was able to turn on HLG on the LX1002. I can't tell if it's actuall HLG because I've never worked in that mode before. It switched the minimum ISO to 400 but the image seemed two or three stops darker than 709Like (I got that to work by using an older version of your HTML file). I was able to get .MOV record mode as well as 1920x1080 60p 100mbps LPCM LongGOP mode.

  11. Without giving too much (or indeed anything) away at this point @xzobinx and @scotchtape, what you see in this initial proof of concept and what the reality will be in a couple of months when the "real" version happens will address both of these aspects. As I said early on in the thread after @Andrew Reid revealed the original prototype, it was very much a jumping off point for where this would end up. Hopefully for the better or course !

  12. IMO it comes from going 60->24 which isn't a simple .5 speed conversion. but rather .4 which means some frames are being played slower and some longer (even if just for a fraction). I might be completely wrong though so you better test it out by going 60->30 or 48->24 I sometimes shoot myself at f/1.2 and the app with peaking and focus zoom is enough to get it in focus.

  13. Yeah, I spent a bit of time looking at the Olympus ones as they were also used for Leica X Vario and M240 so could be compared to Pen 5 etc for more of an insight into reverse engineering. The connector is proprietary and from the it to the board is actually an individually stranded cable that I've highlighted here. So, erm, fuck that ! The last BMPC4K I seriously looked at was a bit tatty so at sub £600 (pre haggle) is probably a bit on the cheap side but even so I can't find many Ursa Minis in the UK at least for quite a bit over double of that. The Ursa Mini is obviously a far better rounded proposition but for a dabble (and the much cheaper media option of not using CFAST) the BMPC4K has the edge for me as the balance could go on lights that it will certainly benefit from

  20. Browser thingie. There's also differences with Chrome, FireFox and others with HDR content on YouTube. I found that one browser kept it flat and didn't apply HDR grading if you will to make it pop. Funny enough... when you would scroll over the timeline with your mouse, you get these little thumbnails/framegrabs... and those were. Not sure why Netflix doesn't just rely on an app/software on one's computer.

I'm guessing for manual lens like zeiss milvus or cine lens, focus gears is the way to go. Sign me up for preorder, kickstarter or whatever meant to get this. with this, I can retire my eosr and put a p4k on gimbal.

  24. I never heard of the gnarbox before but it looks like a great solution. The Ninja 2 would be great but lack of 60p is a no go... one of the few reasons I’m considering keeping the Micro is for its 60p. Btw, any chance you can make a Canon EOS-M EVF work with a Micro? That thing would be a perfect little Super 8 digital camera with a small EVF instead of a screen. It’s a fun little camera the size of Rubik’s Cube. I prefer ML Raw personally but if you are a Resolve user, you may like the Micro better. You can’t go wrong with either one, really. And if you’re patient, you can find a Micro for stupid money.

  26. Seeing this thread has made me put out a watch on ebay. Looking for a cheap raw camera to kick around on, though the ML 5d2's or 5d3's are tempting too. But 60p and cinema DNG's make this really appealing. Chris

  29. I think the Gnarbox 2.0 has the potential to be a pretty ubiquitous fixit device for this stuff. Being able to put a card in and get auto backup and transcoding to ProRes while you are on your way back to base and have it ready to edit on straight away more or less represents a de-facto addition of ProRes to all your cameras. The only thing in doubt that I can't get a clear answer to is whether this version supports CinemaDNG as I'm pretty sure the first one does. Yep. Another one to consider might be a Ninja 2 which are a bit cheaper, smaller and go straight to SSD. The latter part may be important because if I remember correctly the Video Assists have the same issue as the Pocket/Micro of only being compatible with a very limited range of new SD cards.

My view of minimalism is that you don’t have things you don’t need, but that you still do have the things that you do need. I think this is a misconception that people have about the whole movement - that you’re meant to be happy with what someone else thinks is the right amount of stuff, or that somehow less is better. No minimalist would ever find themselves in the desert saying that not having water was the best idea, or being outside their apartment and not having their keys is a good idea!

  32. Hey Mercer - hopefully you can keep it and make something. I have recently come to the conclusion that buying and selling is having a negative impact on my creativity. That may seem obvious, but I am slowly starting to just keep all my cameras and various systems and use them as tools for what they are good at when the time comes. I used to be really paranoid about having more than one camera brand - but now, I don't care - obviously if finances allow.

  33. Just purchased an SLR Magic hyperprime 25mm T0.95 and 10mm T2.1! Next purchase (maybe today) will be the Z-Cam E2. I have been wanting an internal ProRes cam for a while, and the 10 bit 4K 120 h265 looks great too. With the SLR Magics I should be able to fake a full frame look. Can't wait to test it all out - I'll post results.

  34. First off, user sanveer, your typo brought the wrong member here. Better to pay attention to correctness, you know? The content follows. So, we're trolling unless we become silent? When an old member in this forum has a different opinion or anyone can see some unfairness to be written or produced. Is that so? You're not the only entitled to express a view. Otherwise, it is tyranny. Some people have conveyed their disapproval on RED business practices, without mention an attack towards someone outside who are not even here to defend himself. Mentioning facts with reputation damages but where are the evidences other than the mere territory of opinion making? No matter how you feel about him. Fueling some past issue with the webmaster here, innocent in all this mess as I had the chance to directly write to someone lurking in the serious stuff written in these pages. A public place is not private communication. Is that the way you recognise your appreciation to the owner of the site? And you act in behalf of this (free) forum? BTW what contribution you've added to help to solve and handle the trouble? None of our business, isn't it? Consequences don't knock to our door, correct? ; -) To persecute someone is instead what you're claiming. Blanked about you, I think I remember I've once heard you saying in these same pages about your legal background if my memory serves now. And I haven't listened a sole entry on legal aspects to address the matter, though. To make a point to not fit our perspective is then something forbidden under your depreciation? What about your reactions to click one post yes, one post not, along this thread? : D Why intensively? Didn't you like the number of my paragraphs or the countless basics of my point? LOL So I end accused by you to be a troll? Of course, in your mind I see what you read there is annoying. Save your opinion to your posting as it is your single right in a free forum. We should all have the same open chance to demonstrate our perspective. In the free world, there's a name for it: right of reply aka right of correction. Not only those ones who serve our proposal. That's how a free society or community works. For some reason I seconded a disapproval on banning policies only because we can think differently. On that, I, Ed and many others share the same vibe and principle. You should read better my balanced reasoning rather than willing to exclude me here only because you dislike a good part of my words you read coming from the 'other' side. Let the others tell what they feel at the same time. Give them their chance without trying to embarrass or somehow restrict their point attacking or killing the messenger. Worst, because there's a distinct way of thinking. Disgusting if I can write it in a single word.

Layering diffusion, colored lighting and practicals, haze, actually caring about incidental bounce enough to use negative fill... aaaand FINALLY got a black pro mist! Should get to use it out for a talking head shoot on Friday, but so far I'm really liking even just boring test shots.

  42. I’m invested in MFT at the moment. I think the yelling and screaming about the death of MFT is partisan format bullshit. I like the trade offs of the system. Newer technology is making sensor size less of a “compromise” so I look forward to seeing what’s next in this format and I reckon the GH6 will push the envelope yet again. Fujifilm is also doing great stuff with their medium format and APS-C stuff. It’s a great time to be a camera nerd.

  44. Ok, here's a theory... I think the Voigtlanders might be the MFT equivalent of the Zeiss Super Speeds. This is why: Both have very wide apertures and are amongst the fastest lenses available for the sensor size Both are known to be very soft wide open but when stopped down become very sharp, giving both of them a real split personality reputation Both are known for their soft rendering when wide-open and are prized for low-light work and bokeh at night, and also for how sharp they can be when closed down, giving aesthetic options depending on the project Both have very poor performance at the outer edges of their image circle, even when stopped down considerably (*) Both have CA problems at larger apertures, but are improved when stopping-down Both are configured for fully manual cinema use with de-clicked apertures and long focus throws Both are very solidly built, heavy, with very smooth controls making them a joy to use They are both very expensive compared to their more moderately priced competitors (acknowledging that cine glass prices can be stratospheric / catastrophic) (* On the Voigtlanders this isn't because of field curvature. I have no idea what causes it on the SS) I've read that Voigtlander essentially build their lenses so that they can't be repaired, which is contrary to the Zeiss approach with the SS which are regularly serviced and maintained by lens houses. Of course, on the plus side, a set of Voigtlanders costs about 2% of what a set of SS costs, plus MFT is meant to be dead so who cares, right...? Reference materials and supporting evidence..... This article includes the 17.5mm and 25mm Voigtlanders, which go from being in the last two places wide open, to 4th and 5th places at f2.8, to a very close 2nd and 4th at f4. This is all centre sharpness measurements, as their outer performance isn't great, but most people don't put the subject of a shot at the edge, so it's less relevant. https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/05/wide-angle-micro-43-imatest-results/ Aperture tests....... Voigtlanders: Zeiss SS: I'm not sure I'm convinced by this argument, but there are a lot of similarities. Even if it's true, not everyone is a fan of the Super Speeds, and once again it's about taste. Some prefer the Master Anamorphics or the Cooke glass as they're more consistent, being sharper than these wide open and softer when stopped down, so not being so schizophrenic in temperament. I think I'm gradually talking myself into buying the 42.5mm Voigt.

  47. I got the 4/3 panaleica 14-50mm f2.8-3.5 OIS with adapter on my bmpcc, for $300. Not quite LX100 spec but the lens peaked my interest, I was curious when I heard about the "leica rendering" and great IQ for a zoom. No speed booster glass in the way, super sharp, and OIS for my pocket via 4/3 adapter electronics, at least no more micro jitters Cons: it's big and heavy for m43 system, autofocus is useless, and the OIS is pretty dated in performance especially for video use. Otherwise...yeah. leica rendering indeed. Just good glass. Cheers

  48. There are plenty of drone available to lift your Sony camera. Now while finding the airframe and dynamic parts is relatively easy, having a good machine, tuned correctly is more challenging. You'll have to balance the drone properly, set the right PIDs for the flight controller, handle the vibration, balance the props and possibly the motors, use one of these huge 6S or 8S battery that are very expensive with a dedicated charger. Chargin the battery itself is an operation (balancing, need DC source for fast charging, must not overdischarge, etc.). Your flight time will be limited to 10-15 min max. The key point is the gimbal, it must be able to handle the load and be balanced correctly. Everytime you change the lens you will have to rebalance the gimbal and/or change the gimbal settings (PIDs, motor load, etc.). A DJI S1000 can handle the weight and there are plenty available on the used market. The Z15 gimbal would work but there isn't much room for fine tuning with DJI. A S900 + FTBO G10 could work too. Then comes the problems of controlling everything, expo settings, triggering the camera, etc. If you opt for a do it yourself solution, the flight controller won't be synchronized with the gimbal and you'll have limited access to the cam settings. In terms of video you can choose the DJI lightbridge 2 or Amimon for digital link.. You can also go the analog route with a 5.8 GHz system and cam switch for the FPV/HD cam. If you need two video feeds (pilot and operator), you can combine the solutions). But the 5.8 GHz system won't be as user friendly. Honestly at this price point I would consider the Inspire 2, it will make your life so much easier. Well, the kit price point is around $6000 with the X5S camera (micro 4/3). In the end it really depends of your technical skills and will to get your hands dirty with building and tuning.
