  1. The only reason the "creator" of this thread would want an f1.4 lens would be to give him this type of subject isolation :

  2. On November 19th the G9 will almost become a GH5 with the 2.0 firmware, which includes: "3. Enhanced video functions (G9) ・4K 30p/25p 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording is supported. ・4K 60p/50p 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI output is supported. ・Luminance level for 10-bit video is supported. ・VFR (Variable Frame Rate) shooting is supported (FHD 2-180 fps/4K 2-60 fps). ・HDR video recording is supported. ・V-Log L recording and Waveform Monitor (WFM) are available with the Upgrade Software Key DMW-SFU1 (sold separately)." Diving a bit deeper, could this be an indication that Panasonic is getting ready to announce the GH6?

  3. I think the GH6 will really pack in the features as it is the only way to differentiate the MFT market (just like the GH5 did 3 years ago). Basically, what can't full-frame mirrorless cameras do yet? A few years ago, it was 10-bit 4K, high frame rates, and great IBIS. Really only Panasonic's own cameras have surpassed that, but Nikon, Sony, and Canon are coming close (and Canon crushing with 1DX III specs that will surely make their way into a mirrorless camera soon-ish). So the GH6 needs to go all-in. - Raw externally to an SSD - Dual ISO that is great to at least 6400 ISO (like the GH5s) - 6K recording (not a huge deal for me as I'd rather have 12-bit 444 or raw in HD and 4K, but everyone else is doing it, soo...) - G9 or better IBIS (EM1X territory) - 120fps in 4K (and in 10-bit!) - Great AF - definitely starting to find this more and more important to keep my gimbal weight down. - And the BIG ONE: INTERNAL NDs!! I'm all about Panasonic's full-frame and excited about where Canon is heading after two knockout releases (C500II and 1DXIII) and amazing RF glass, but a GH6 with the above features with the 10-25mm f1.7 attached would compete on almost all levels.

  5. The thread is sleeping, so I thought about sharing updates after having used the S1 for a month (and the newly announced firmware updates are a good occasion for that !). So I used the S1 during a 1 month arctic journey across northern Swedish mountains and Norway in last September/October. I only took the S1, for photo and video, and brought with me the 24-105 f4 kit lens and the Sigma 14-24 2.8 dg dn (the new one, designed for mirrorless) which I brought 3 weeks before I left home. I wanted to film (not doing time lapse) the northern lights, but we were not very lucky with the intensity of lady aurora, despite one or two explosions in the sky, and the f2.8 aperture of the sigma was not enough. I will soon sell the Sigma and buy a 20 1.4 Sigma art, and maybe wait for the newly announced pana 16-35 f4... (or a used canon 16-35 f4). I was a bit frustrated with longer reach need, because, when I bought the S1, I thought the ex.tele converter worked the same as on Sony (clear zoom if I remember) and on the GH5 and G9. So I did not bring any tele for this trip (despite still having at home a Canon 200 f2.8 L ii prime at that time), hoping to film with the 24-105 at 105mm in apsc mode + exteleconv. Some days before leaving home, I discovered that it does not work in 4k… So on 1 or 2 occasions, to film wildlife or distant landscape, I used 1080, and pixel/pixel mode. I checked the results at home on my computer, and the results are really really awful eheh ! APSC mode is, on the other hand, really good ; so, in the end, I had a little reach on some occasions. I really love the range of the 24-105, and find it very useful. Fot this kind of trip, it is perfect ; maybe the newly announced (yeah, so much "newly announced" today !) Sigma art 24-70 f2.8 dg dn will be better, I'll keep a close eye on it. The Sigma 14-24 f28 dg dn is a wonderful lens for photos, sharp enough for me in the corner, light etc. But the inability to put a vari nd on it was useless for video. I bought it for nighttime auroras filming, but a 20 1.4 + a wide zoom that takes filters will serve me better. I encountered minor bugs : occasionally, when I pressed the review button to check my images, it said "no valid pictures on card". Had to turn off the camera and I could access again my images. I had 1 or 2 freezes (really less than my fujis that used to freeze very very often) too. Ah, and the camera is slooooooooow to operate. Drives me crazy when in a rush ! All in all, it worked very well, even during snow storms and -10°C temperatures, and was covered with ice and used under rain with no problems. The handling and controls are phenomenal, especially in shitty conditions. So far, I only reviewed my footage on my computer since I came back home, and I barely touched the camera again (little time) but I managed to play with some clips. The Vlog shots are gorgeous... really ! I tried to play with them with filmconvert nitrate and varicam profile (I need to try the """newly announced""" ? S1 profiles), and with the varicam luts supplied by panasonic, and I love everything about it : colors, look... I think i prefer the result I obtain by applying Resolve's color space transform to the vlog clip, and then tweaking it to taste. I am still learning and, thus, is a horrible color corrector, but with minor stuff applied, I obtain a really pleasing result. I also filmed a lot with Cine-d and HLG. The former seems to be very good, and the latter... I still did not figure out how to treat it in Resolve eheh. I wish I had more time to learn the camera prior to departure, because I played with the flat profile last week-end, and I really like it too. One thing I instantly noticed is the iso capabilities : amazing ! I sadly found some missed focus shots while reviewing my clips. More than I wanted... I mainly used MF, but with a lot of "AF first then switch to MF", and maybe the struggling AF in low contrast scene + not always easy to check the focus peaking in bad weather conditions + my poor fillmmaking skills are to blame. On the still side, not a lot of things to say : wonderful high iso performance, very flexible files... everything you want from a modern 24mp sensor. A great machine for my use : landscape, documentary, astro photo... Sorry for the very unprofessional review ahah, hope some of you will find something useful. I attach just for the fun an image I took inside the tent, after a short night (I still have to post process my photos). Don't pay attention to the "clean" appearance of the camera... I was always wiping it, as it was often covered with snow and rain ? I will sell my Sigma 14-24 2.8 and, in the future, I will slowly build a kit with a wide angle prime, lenses like the samyang 135 f2, takumar 50 1.4, and maybe the coming panasonic S lenses... But for now, I will add the smallrig cage for the S1 + a cheap 5.5" monitor, and I think about buying a Panasonic G9 + pana leica 200 f2.8 + tc (unbelievable sales + cashback right now) . It will allow me to "deport" the long reach video and photo use to this setup. @omega1978 sorry, I promised you to take sample images with the sigma 14-24, but I did not find time to do it before leaving. Did you put your hands on it ??

  6. Not the for the 10 minute 4k 50/60p limit. As a G9 owner I'm quite looking forward to the update - and yes, having waited for the G90 to arrive in the market a while back, it wasn't a hard choice to buy a G9 instead, the 4k 50/60 capability and top-notch IBIS is far more important to me than the extended record times of the G90...and I paid less for the G9 than I would have for a G90 ?.

  7. OK, here is what they're up to. I thought it was weird that the plausible posts didn't have any links in them and initially thought that we had managed to attract the most incompetent spammers on the internet (aside from the Conservative party's latest efforts obviously). What they do is get a second spammer (or themselves) to quote the first post and tag the link for whatever shite it is they're pushing on to the end of the quote. At first it looks like its a legitimate reply but the posts will have positive replies such as "Issue got solved" or "Agreed!" because it entices someone to click the link to find out what the solution was etc. which is what their game is. Here are two recent examples from the "Century Optics" and "50mm" thread. The posts quoted did not have the links in originally. They are obviously wise to the fact that the first posts will get moderated so anything with a dodgy link in will be deleted so thats why they don't put it in that but use the reply system to insert them. I would guess that there are a lot of "clean" accounts set up to do the first post and then they'll just use multiple other accounts to add the links in to replies. This makes it look like the one replying is the spammer when in actual fact they both are. Can I make a request to not ban the one who posts the pieces about chains though as I find it offers a good perspective for when my own life is at its most tedious and dull to think "yeah but at least I don't have to write about chains. Or worse still, be so far down the spamming ladder that I get given that as source material in bot farm when all my other bot mates are out there preaching about penis enlargement"

  9. I think 6K in 16:9 is a must given so many cameras seem to be adding it. I’m not so bullish on 8K. Would rather see a nice crisp cinematic 6K with great DR and internal ND solution.

  10. You are comparing 6K Bayer-to-4K Bayer downscale + 4K debayer to 6K debayer + 6K RGB-to-4K RGB downscale. The first will never look as good as the second. The 10-bit file is linear and the 8-bit file is non-linear. That's why 10-bit looks suspicious to you, it has lost a lot of precision in the darks. Yeah, well, the main difference with offsetting in log is that you are moving your "zero" around (a "log" curve is never a direct log conversion in the blacks), so you'd need to readjust the black point. Whereas with multiplication (gain) in linear there is no such problem. Still, offsetting is handy with log footage or film scans.

  12. I think low light performance is very important so if that means a 12mp sensor I am all for it. 120fps in 4k is a must, the Z-cam E2 can do 150 and that is the same sensor as the 5S. RAW recording is a must, the Sigma FP can do it to an SSD and so should every camera from this point on IMHO. 422 10 bit up to 4k 60fps, again the Z cam can already do this. Prores internal recording should really happen. Full vlog is a must and of course IBIS.

  13. When these cameras were not out yet, a few years back, I thought that Panasonic should pack video-feats in the G9 just like upcoming GH5. At the time I though the GH5 would be something like the GH5s but with IBIS, so it would offer better low-light like the A7S line up, better rolling shutter and readout speed but the G9 could still offer compatible V-log L capabilities to work as a B-cam for video. That way, you could have higher-res pics with the G9 and better video with the GH5 and they would complement each other pretty nicely, in a similar way Sony does. In the end the G9 didn't get the video-feats - well, until now -, the G9 and GH5 ended up sharing the same 20MP sensor and there was a separated GH5s with better low light, multi-aspect sensor and no IBIS. Panasonic has backed down from the early promise of 8K by 2020 for the GH6, they showed their 8K camera with organic sensor, but from what I've read, it's a power hungry sensor, so it doesn't look like the technology is quite ready for consumers cameras. Will the GH6 or G10 come with ToF AF? G10: higher MP count IBIS reliable continuous AF for sports high-speed and high-capacity buffer maybe dual-gain circuit if they can 4K 10-bit GH6: new 20-ish MP sensor dual-gain IBIS 240+fps slow-mo maybe 4K90p or 120p? 4K60p 10-bit internally reliable AF without hunting/pulsing in video S1H's hinge/fully articulated screen at least the same RAW recording as the S1H It seems like a reasonable list, the major doubts are the new sensors and ToF AF or PDAF, but if Panasonic can pull that off, they will be a pretty good pair for photo, video and hybrid shooters, enough to keep the Micro4/3 interesting without disrupting their S-series.

  14. Ok here are two shots, both CINE mode, one uncropped, one APS-C cropped. aps_crop_A001_005_20191106_000012.DNG non_crop_A001_006_20191106_000001.DNG OK, here you go, 8bit , 10bit, 12bit all from CINE mode and a 14bit still- sorry it wasn't on a tripod so the camera moved slightly still-SDIM0189.DNG 12bit-A001_007_20191106_000006.DNG 10bit-A001_006_20191106_000005.DNG 8bit-A001_005_20191106_000004.DNG We really need that firmware update for shooting to SSD- I exchanged my 500GB T5 for the 1GB version in hopes it might fix the issue, but no, a handful of CDNG clips are still coming in with frames misplaced in the sequence, and I don't have the patience anymore to go through them and try to correct the order.

  19. @Mike Mgee At least for the regular S1, on the latest firmware 1.2, the ugly blue-clipping in VLOG is definitely still a problem which has yet to be fixed, I just finished shooting a project tonight in which it is very apparent in several scenes. Edit: I now see that firmware update 1.3 for the S1 will be out on November 19th, and help with the blue-clipping issue, along with several other fixes like ghosting, and last-but-not-least including the ability to set manual exposure in high framerates!! Very nice to see that Panasonic is listening to user feedback.

  20. firmware announced, but oddly no mention for S1H. Update notes do mention a fix for blue clipping in vlog and a fix for afterimage, which I believe is the ghosting issue seen by some. https://m.dpreview.com/news/0778308148/panasonic-adds-features-with-firmware-for-gh5-gh5s-g9-s1-and-s1r-with-particular-boost-for-g9-video

The recent videos by Jinni exposed many of his half-truths (I’m afraid to be sued so I’m going here some kind of British understatement). Let’s see if Apple’s suit against their industry damaging patent will go thru. If yes, his resignation is a way out to avoid trouble.

  28. I have heard of that issue when some people are using SD cards that get over 1/2 full. I bet it has to do with the speed of the cards and their write speeds as the card gets full. I have never had that happen on any of my 3 P4Ks or the P6K. *BUT* I use 1TB Samsung T5s, exclusively. I have filled up T5 drives completely several times and never had a dropped frame. I have only had two issues with any of the P4Ks or the P6K, despite using them on many jobs for extended periods of time. Problem 1: one of my P4Ks had a defective touch screen. BM replaced the cam and I haven't had an issue since. Problem 2: one of my cameras was draining the internal battery and shutting off, despite a Sony NP battery being attached via a battery sled through the 12V port. I swapped the sled and have never had that issue again. I know that some people have had problems with their cams, but I have had so few problems with my 4 that it never even enters my mind during a shoot. Best of luck!

  31. verry interesting. I haven't updated any of my cameras yet since we are in the middle of wedding season. But all of our bm (2 p4k and 1 p6k) has been really reliable so far. We use npf plate and t5 ssd on all of them and none has any shut down issue. I have found if the ssd is more than 3/4 full, it takes a lot longer to read. The playback thing is the same with every bm camera so it's not a bug.

  32. I do get why you'd want to shoot 1080 in camera, but making 4k footage 1080 in Resolve isn't an extra step at all. If you're sequence is HD, it auto scales to fit, so from a user experience it's exactly the same as working with 1080 material. The difference is in the storage used and possibly the speed of your playback and export.
    1 point
  33. By downscale I mean that the GH5 takes the full sensor resolution and sub samples it to get 1080p in camera, which saves a step as apposed to shooting 4K and then sub sampling it to 1080p in Resolve.

  44. It depends on the camera and camera settings (and what look you like) but imo diffusion filters are a key missing ingredient toward a more "organic" look, if that's what you're after. They add an extra layer beyond even using vintage lenses, and imo it's worth combining the two if you want a "cinematic" look rather than a technical one. I think @Zach Goodwin2 proselytized extensively about them, and while I think he was using stronger grades perhaps than I settled on (don't really remember), I agree they have great value. That said, most on this forum seem inclined toward sharpening video and generally going for a sharper image than I prefer personally. So it is a matter of taste. I like the Alexa, which is quite soft, and I really like the look of 16mm and late-90s films shot by Richardson and Kaminski, which make heavy use of promist, classic soft, and nets. I think JFK is a beautiful movie. (And the Alexa is a weird camera. I'm convinced it has an optical diffusion filter in front of the OLPF similar to Tiffen digital diffusion but that the pipeline also applies a slight wide-radius unsharp mask. Which isn't crazy. Film's modulation transfer function curve can exceed 100% mtf and then it drops off to extinction more slowly than digital; so this approach could emulate that. And give the "3d" look people talk about while still making skin smooth. But this is conjecture.) The issue with black promist (also with classic softs and Hollywood black magic) is that you can see "speckles" in the bokeh, which may or may not be desirable, and at very deep stops sometimes the black dots that mitigate the promist's natural halation come into focus. (Also you need a matte box if you want to use a 4x4 filter, so screw on filters might make more sense depending on if you want to keep your rig small... but 1/4 BPM has a good look. Surprisingly strong, though.) I find these tests interesting: Particularly the latter. It's amazing how close the C300 with 1/4 to 1/2 digital diffusion looks to the Alexa. Imo it's a big improvement, however subtle.
