Large Format Cameras Are Changing Film Language, From ‘Joker’ to ‘Midsommar’
billdoubleu and one other reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
I'm a big fan of M43. However, in my experience, larger sensors shoot sharper images at similar DOF's effects. That's pretty much it as far ascent I'm concerned. Yes, you can shoot, approx. f2 FF equivilant on a M43 with a f0.95 lens, but the lens costs $600+ and it's soft'ish wide open and also has some halo'ing. I kinda like that look, but that's me. A f2 lens on a FF camera can be had for $25 and will be pretty sharp. Shoot the visuals you like. If you find M43 coming up short, consider other options. Ain't no big deal.2 points -
You can make aperture/ISO/WB/shutter angle changes during the time-lapse either directly on the camera or via an app. Shutter angles are 11.2 , 15 , 22.5 , 30 , 37.5 , 45 , 60 , 72 , 75 , 90 , 108 , 120 , 144 , 150 , 172.8 , 180 , 216 , 270 , 324 , 360 With regard to apps, I think there is someone on here who makes one that seems to work but if you don't want the extra stuff that that one does like recallable focus and exposure memories, custom white balance stores etc then there are a bunch of others that will do the job for what you're doing.2 points

Sigma Fp review and interview / Cinema DNG RAW
KnightsFan reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
The Acsoon Cineeye and a cheap Android phone could give you that sort of thing. It has a lot of good features like grayscale, RGB, monochrome, false colour, focus peaking, LUT loading etc and the signal can be monitored by up to 4 devices simultaneously. Decent range and latency as well. I'm going to do a quick write up about it sometime in the week as whilst my primary interest in it was live view remote with my app for the Pocket4K it has some potential for the FP as well. With the Cineeye, these 2.5inch £50 Android phones could potentially be combined with a loupe to make a wireless self powered version of the LS300 lash up that I did. Just need to make sure that the phone has enough grunt to run the Cineeye app, which I doubt will be an issue but the resolution might be.1 point -
4K DSLR with no jittery / stutter video ? (Canon vs Fuji vs Sony)
KnightsFan reacted to frontfocus for a topic
pretty easy to spot, there is no motion blur with her hair, so that's just a fast shutter speed. That's a user error if you wanna call it an error, maybe the user wanted that kind of effect, who knows. I think it's pretty safe to say now, that there is no problem with the X-T30 or the A6300, but that some users just need to learn the basics1 point -
Large Format Cameras Are Changing Film Language, From ‘Joker’ to ‘Midsommar’

That's one of the huge advantages of MFT - having a bright exposure and not having to contend with a razor thin DoF. It took me ages to realise that and I couldn't work out why people were saying that getting f0.95 lenses for low light was ridiculous because they unusable and I was thinking "it's not that hard actually" - then I realised they were thinking about FF exposure and DoF and I had one of those "ah ha!" moments! Agreed. Fast wides are a weakness, but if you shoot sports then you can laugh in the face of those people with their hernia-inducing 800mm prime lens setups!1 point -
Obviously you have to get the exposure in the ballpark - what get clipped stays clipped, but you don't have to worry about tiny amounts of flickering. You'll still need to have some kind of auto-exposure to compensate for the light changing. Day-to-night time lapses are really difficult to do well!1 point

That's great to know! Thank you! I wonder how the shutter angle is handled -- relative to the playback frame rate? That could be a problem a one sometimes needs to make multi-second exposures when shooting time lapse. Ha, ha! Whoever it is, that person must be very smart and resourceful! I am interested in all of those features. Where can I learn more about the app? Thanks! Thank you! It is good to know that it can be done in Resolve without having to obtain a special program.1 point

It's also worth mentioning that there's a plugin in Resolve that can smooth exposure changes between frames in time lapses. It might be the deflicker one, but I can't remember. I've used it and it worked well, so you don't need to get everything completely perfect in-camera.1 point

4K DSLR with no jittery / stutter video ? (Canon vs Fuji vs Sony)
frontfocus reacted to KnightsFan for a topic
That's certainly not 1/50. The stutter in that video is from a very fast shutter speed. Is this representative of what you are experiencing? If so, then your shutter speed is too fast.1 point -
Just watched this and it's hilarious, well done! ???1 point

There is recording limit hack to take care of that.1 point

Panasonic G9 Becomes GH5, almost.
IronFilm reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
These updates definitely make the G9 a more capable video camera, especially for the price. If they'd been able to get rid of the recording limit I'd have heavily considered getting one to replace my G85 for event shooting. The GH5/GH5s still has the advantage with their professional video/cine features, but the G9 has definitely been turned into a little beast of a camera. I'm guessing the recording limit is still necessary to prevent overheating? These updates though remind me how much Panasonic fumbled the G95. Outside of the recording limit this pretty much makes the G9 a superior video camera than the G95 for essentially the same price, no? Plus you get the impressive stills capabilities to boot.1 point -
This makes G9 very appealing but with all these improvements they should also remove recording time limit (30min in 25/30p, 10 min in 50/60p). And no 10bit in 24p?1 point

We've had heated discussions in this forum on the DOF equivalency principle and on the difference in the looks of different size formats. I am on the side that there is definitely a difference in the general look of different size formats. I also maintain that the DOF equivalency principle does not account for the rate that the focus "falls off" outside of the mathematical DOF range and that this DOF falloff rate differs between different formats. Keep in mind, that the assertions above apply not to the size of a sensor nor emulsion, but to the optics made for a particular size of sensor/emulsion. If one compares the images from a 16mm camera to those from, say, an 8"x10" camera, the difference in look and DOF falloff is striking. Here is footage from a recent 8"x10" camera:1 point

The ultra-wide doesn't have it, although it is less necessary for this focal length1 point

Gee thanks! But no, not really. I still work an awful lot in the low budget / indie tier of productions. Tomorrow's short film is an ultra low budget self funded short film, yet it will be shot on an ARRI AMIRA, and I'll be showing up with my so called "fancy" sound gear from Zaxcom/Sanken/etc (no DPA mics though, sorry) Many forum goers just need to set their sights a little higher.1 point
