Apple releases 16 in MacBook Pro with better thermals!
dslnc and one other reacted to EthanAlexander for a topic
I guess I'm in the minority on the forum enjoying Apple. When I have to take out my wallet, being on mac sucks, but it's worth it just to be able to use FCPX and avoid Premiere. Maybe one day I'll have the time to learn Resolve for anything besides color and consider Windows then... Nahhh just kidding I'm a fanboy I'll never leave.2 points -

Apple releases 16 in MacBook Pro with better thermals!
EthanAlexander reacted to dslnc for a topic
I had a top spec'ed 17" MBP that after two years started to show glitches on the screen and eventually failed. Gpu issues. Almost out of warranty. Later Apple acknowledged a production run glitch that affected a 'few' and ended up producing a new batch of motherboards (no used parts) and free reparation (so even if under 1% were affected we are still speaking about thousands of units). All great. But I had the MBP shelved for almost two years before it could be used again. Being quite outdated when it was working again. That being said. Dealing directly with Apple regarding warranty issues etc for 15+ years I find the services and support great. However getting Applecare for portable devices is recommended -> Apple are more flexible if shit happens. I am not sure how say Dell or HP are dealing with these type of issues nowadays. Some companies have more bad stories than others I suppose. But all have some. Some strives more to make things right in the end. Leasing/renting the gear can also help minimising that these issues falls back on yourself I have both Macs and Pcs in the studio. That will not change. The latest MBP seems like a nice laptop. But I will probably let others do the benchmarking and stress-tests to se how it fairs with throttling before buying. The new Mac Pro is also around the corner. Curios to see how it fairs too.1 point -
Yes, as said and here is a comparison test with another one of same range: There's also this one by DELL: Here's why I'll be ending to buy the Optoma (not my TK800 model I bought but gives a pretty much the idea of my own recent findings) : Nonetheless, Optoma's Laser Phosphor entry model compares with much higher range -- here are two distinct comparative tests with one year in-between to exactly justify the point: In any way whatsoever, on minute 7:00, faux-K shows up and testifies : ) In any case, proves how inaccurate is to say it is dead, as much as MFT is... And then to think that around 10 years ago you didn't have pocketdrones, but hired someone with a cinerigged model helicopter: And then it got really serious with setups like this:1 point

Also... what has become really popular is something known as 'cinewhoop'. A little FPV drone with ducted fans with either Runcam or GoPro attached. Daily Dose of Internet often uses such clips found on Instagram in his videos: Increasingly starting to be used for commercial projects... random (not really aerial) examples: Other implementations: Music vid:1 point

I dunno... Low ANSI lumens to my taste : ) I bought this one (3000 ANSI lumens looks to me a minimum requirement): https://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-TK800.htm I am not unhappy at all but... pixel shifting is definitely cheating the parade. I got the proof today with a 4K sample, even though from h.265 @ low bitrate. I'm eager to pay from native 2.7K instead. Looks like to me more reasonable and the recent Mavic Mini has made me think about... https://www.techradar.com/reviews/optoma-uhz65-4k-laser-projector https://www.techradar.com/reviews/optoma-uhd60-projector EUR2500 + VAT for the Optoma Laser Phosphor (lamp type) https://www.digitalprojection.com/emea/laser-phosphor-vs-lamp-projectors/ https://www.christielaserphosphor.com/media/Laser_Phosphor_Technology_Overview_FAQ.pdf ...or save 1 grand in the initial purchase is the only question? Seems pretty clear to me, it's not the only premise to matter on here:1 point

Apple releases 16 in MacBook Pro with better thermals!

Don't get me wrong, i am enjoying the platform too. My iMacs have been real workhorses and FCPX is a gem. But when you get into a situation similar to the one i described above you are forced to reconsider the real value of these products, especially the hardware part. Imagine paying 4500$ from your hard earned money for a laptop and then plugging in your earphones to avoid listening to the 2000 pops that will be produced during an editing session. Then imagine claiming your customer rights from a company that like @kaylee said above "doesn't talk about it". Also, the customer support in USA is way better than here in Europe.1 point -

It’s really not that bad in pc land. Just moved from my pathetic 2014 Mac mini to a liquid cooled rtx 2060 rig for Davinci resolve. Download a free antivirus like Kaspersky free which I use and it works great. Or use Windows Defender. According to a huge German AV test that is considered THE standard, Windows Defender came on top. Point is Windows is not terrible like it once was. Unless you are using final cut, save money and go Windows. Just get a reliable free antivirus and don’t download Zhongi_Video_LUT_installer.exe1 point

To each its own. I feel exactly that about all those complicated menus. A pain in the ass. That simply cuts off all my pleasure to shoot with. Blackmagic has brought me the feeling of a real film camera back. I love their approach to put the shooter in the focus of their camera design, not just another user in the digital age or ENG field. They have made digital cinema cameras instead. I come back from 35mm and 16mm realm. This really counts to me : ) IQ wise I practically am able to reproduce anything I want. Secondary today IMO : -)1 point

Panasonic S1H review / hands-on - a true 6K full frame cinema camera
EthanAlexander reacted to crevice for a topic
I got rid of my pocket 6k. The battery lasted 15 minutes and I couldn’t hand hold it without micro jitters. I prefer my bmcc 2.5k to the 6k anyways, more organic and filmic look to it. And though its a pain in the ass to use as well, I love the image. For modern cameras and everyday shooting I prefer the S1H even if its not RAW. If I wanted to rig a camera up like the pocket 6k, I would just buy an URSA mini pro, you can find them used in the $3k range and i prefer the image. I probably will get an URSA mini pro at some point next year, depends on what the Komodo and Sony FX6 are all about.1 point -

Panasonic S1H review / hands-on - a true 6K full frame cinema camera
Vintage Jimothy reacted to crevice for a topic
Slanted lens did a comparison to the pocket 6k, see below. My take away is (my personal opinion, doesn't have to be yours) that the S1H colors look better and skin tones look better. Both cameras are similar and this comparison proves that anybody who claims the pocket 6k "destroys" the S1H just because of its popularity and codec are drinking the kool aid. The fact that the S1H can go toe to toe against a raw format, while also having IBIS, better battery, swivel screen AND almost more importantly for hybrid shooters also be a legit stills camera is a huge selling point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rghbaHoVRsk1 point -

Are there any fast pancake emount lenses similar to the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7?
EthanAlexander reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Its a step up in price but Sony's own 28mm f2 might be an option. Its more of a soufflé than a pancake but it doesn't look too unwieldy on the A6500 Its full frame as well so a bit more versatile if you change to an A7xx Decent run through of it here with the A6500.1 point -
Oh yes please... I want that cinematic-filmic-sci-fi-look for cheap. I want my footage look professional. Especially sun rays shining through leaves. And ordinary people downtown (in slow-motion of course). Add some musicians work and I am good to go! Looking forward to show "my work" on YT.1 point

Yeah thats the beauty of it in that you can scale up or down what monitor you use with it depending on circumstances and there are a few 3 inch Android phones around now that are ideal. Only thing to be careful of with older devices like the iPod Touch is that it needs to be a model that can work on 5.8ghz wifi. I really like the Sidefinder thing that SmallHD did for the 500 series. Pity someone doesn't do it for other monitors as having a 5" monitor in that side on configuration makes so much more sense with narrow cameras.1 point

The couple of downsides with this machine for me are: - the cost of added storage/ram which gets very pricey and fast. And it aint possible to upgrade it itself ofcourse - radeon 5500 which has the same tdp (85watt) as nvidia 2070maxq but far less juice specially for Resolve which loves CUDA cores - overall dreadfull reapirability - a very ascetic selection of ports Otherwise seems like a pretty good upgrade to me.1 point -
Is the iPad Pro viable for video editing?
Robert Collins reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Lets get the negatives out of the way. The file management restrictions of iOS (which were beyond LumaTouch's control) were a major hassle but that has by and large now been addressed with the release of iPadOS. Another drawback, which again is beyond their control, is that there is no support for ProRes. This may not be an issue for many users but it does rule out being able to use it even with any non-RAW footage from the BM cameras without transcoding so it is something to bear in mind. Ditto if you're using an Atomos etc as the recording medium for a DSLR/Mirrorless. The restriction to one LUT isn't great if you're using LOG or any flat profile that requires a corrective LUT as you then can't add a "creative" LUT on top of that. Some sort of stabilisation would be welcome, although there are stabilising apps for iOS that you can pre-process your footage if you don't mind the extra step/time. On the upside.... The biggest upside is that there is plenty of upside. LumaFusion isn't just a very good editing app for iOS, its a very good editing app full stop. I initially started using LumaFusion strictly as an in the field editing system for cutting and transmitting pre-match build up pieces in sports stadiums but I actually found I liked it enough to use it as an editor in a lot of non mobile situations where I would normally have used FCPX. Its fast, responsive, logical and unless you have that need for using ProRes and/or multiple LUTS then it can be all the editing system most people actually need. The integration with the Gnarbox 2.0 looks pretty compelling, albeit it at a price, but it glues everything together as a viable professional system with ingesting, transcoding and backups etc. The XML export update is very close to release which will move the story on quite a bit as well as you can then do the edit on your iPad and then finish it off in your "real" desktop NLE if you need the extra options so you can have the best of both worlds. One other thing to note is that everyone that I've ever dealt with at LumaTouch has been helpful and friendly and you can see by how far the system has developed that they care about developing it further and listening to users. Having said all of that though and returning to your original question of can it be used in lieu of Resolve then you need to look at how deeply you use the extra functionality of Resolve and how often you would come up against the bumps in the road that I've outlined. If you are just using h264/265 files with a picture profile that can be corrected with the inbuilt controls and you only then need one "creative" LUT then the chances are it could be all you need. If you are using Cinelike D and then the Leeming LUT for example as a corrective and then always add a film simulation LUT on top then you've immediately got a problem. You should go to their website and download the User Guide to gauge how restrictive its features may or may not be for the way you would use it. https://luma-touch.helpscoutdocs.com/article/87-reference-guide1 point -
4K DSLR with no jittery / stutter video ? (Canon vs Fuji vs Sony)
EthanAlexander reacted to KnightsFan for a topic
That makes sense. It might have helped your cause earlier if you'd said you couldn't share because the images were private. Considering the number of spambots and such lately, I can't really blame people for being suspicious of trolls. The way I look at it, even if someone is trolling, maybe other people get here from an honest google search. If there is a difference in motion blur when using the same shutter speed, then either the Fuji or the Canon is reporting its shutter speed incorrectly. Edit: either that, or the "motion blur" on the Canon is blurring from compression as well. More motion will strain interframe compression more, so lots of movement will make for a less detailed frame overall. The Canon might be suffering there.1 point -
