  1. Been testing the S1H for a few days and thought I'd share a few thoughts. First impression was that this is a large, heavy camera! A couple of other colleagues were taken aback by the size too. However one colleague who is used to shooting stills with a Canon 1DX mkII thought it was fine and fit nicely in the hand, so I guess it depends what you're used to. The menus are quite similar to what I remember from the GH5, although I sold mine about a year ago so it's not that fresh in my memory. At the moment I use a Canon C200 and have a Fuji X-T3 as my personal camera so it was a bit of an adjustment, and the S1H certainly lacks the tactile retro pleasure of the Fuji, and also lacks the video specific buttons of the C200. I was pleased by the look and feel of the 24-105 F4 lens, which gives nice shallow DOF when required. It was silent and well made, although coming from Fuji lenses recently my first impression was that it's massive! Again, it's just because I'm not used to it. Now for my worst thing about the camera - the autofocus is really a drag. I was so excited about this camera and initially the weird pulsing and searching autofocus took the wind out of my sails and gave me a very bad first impression. Even in stills it doesn't seem very precise or reliable, particularly in lower light. The face and person recognition sometimes works great, but is never reliable. You just never know when it's going to decide to defocus and start searching. Compared to Canon, Sony, and even Fuji AF, this feels like a massive step back. I hate the way it defocuses past the subject before snapping back, even in stills mode it really irritates me. I've learned to adjust to it a bit in the short time I've had with the camera (only a couple of days) and I'm sure I would learn to work around it, but it's a massive drawback, and I was really disappointed by the still performance, which is usable but just not at the level I'm used to. And finally my favourite thing about this camera... The image quality and colour is fantastic. Beautiful. Perfect 4k. I did try the 6k modes but only a little as it's not a big deal for me right now and also my Mac Pro choked on it! The colour in this new generation of Panasonics is strikingly good. I prefer it to Canon even. it's more realistic yet beautiful. Arri-like. And such crisp, beautiful unsharpened image quality. While I would say it still lacks the purely cinematic look of the old-school blackmagics or Arri, it's a wonderful modern image. I'd put it 2 leagues ahead of the GH5, Z-Cam E2 (which I owned for a short while) and way ahead of the Sonys. I don't know which I prefer between the S1H and C200 purely in image quality, but I think it might be the Panasonic. It's close, and I vastly prefer working with the S1H for it's form factor when run-and-gunning. The V-log is just gorgeous. It's making me consider buying a S1 just for personal use, just when I'd vowed to get over my GAS! So those are just a few quick thoughts. My bottom line is, if the autofocus was good this would be an essential camera. As it is, it puts this camera in a really tough spot. Yes the image is fantastic, and yes 'real filmmakers don't use autofocus', but most of us want and would use good autofocus. Once you've gotten used to it, it's very hard to go back! Especially for one man band operators like myself. It's so close to being perfect that I'm left quite frustrated. I guess the next generation is probably worth waiting for. But at the same time I'm haunted by how good that image is... It reminds me of how I used to feel when I looked at rushes from my Ursa Mini 4.6k. it's just pleasing and cinematic somehow. Satisfying for the IQ geek in me. I just wish that the AF was better. Hoping for a firmware improvement, but it's pretty clear it will never be up there with the best in the class unfortunately, and when the new 1DX miii comes out, I would expect a big price drop on this camera. EDIT I forgot to mention the slow motion. The 120-180fps isn't great to be honest, very soft compared to what I'm used to with the Fuji X-T3, which was another disappointment. Again, hoping for improvements in firmware, but not holding my breath. I think good crisp 120fps should be pretty much standard on a top level pro-sumer camera these days.

  2. It’s about time so I may order one although my biggest complaint with EOS R’s 4K is the horrendous rolling shutter. ..incidentally global shutter on Komodo is a massive appeal and could potentially kill 1DX3 sales for action videographers etc..

    RED Komodo

I've been following it pretty closely and have been wondering that myself. I thought it was going to be sensor size, but that proved to be incorrect. As far as I can tell, the main differences will be: - High Frame Rates - Most Red cameras can do 96fps in 6k (Komodo will top out at 40 or 50fps) and 120-150fps in 4k. The specs haven't been released yet, but I'd be surprised if Komodo matched this. - Modularity - All of Red's other cameras can be built out based on the production. Whereas Komodo is pretty much just itself - it can't really be anything more than what it is, which probably means it won't be used as many A-Cams on most of the shows/movies that Red cameras are used on now. They need all the extra inputs and outputs that DSMC2 provides. - Fixed Mount - Totally fine with me since I love the RF Mount, but having an RF Mount and not user-swappable PL and EF mounts probably means many bigger productions will opt for DSMC2 and not use adapters. But really that seems to be about it, all of which is fine for small crews, owner/operators, small production companies, etc. Also, with a global shutter mode and Red IQ, I bet they will sell dozens of these to action movies and tv shows to use as crash cams and b, c, d, e, f, g etc cams.

    RED Komodo

Maybe they're just shifting their sales strategy? I can imagine that they don't have as much market penetration in the upscale market as they need to sustain, so they're going for a new segment? If so, other models could take a hit, but they have to do it.

  6. Oh, I'd disagree quickly with that. Who we are in life is who we are as filmmakers. Unless you're just a straight ahead craft-person singularly focused on the technical, you should always give some of what you and who you are are to your creations. I mean, that's just a prerequisite for this sort of work. Otherwise, what's really the point, right? So, I really don't have a problem with it. There's more common ground that divergence (still) than we might admit. Might be hard to believe when we're behind these keyboards a lot of time, but when one is actually out there in the real world it's evident.

  7. You are wrong to equate them. Bernie Sanders held to the same beliefs for years, even though it made him politically unpopular. It took decades for enough of a critical mass to come around to his way of thinking that it became feasible for him to run for president. The evidence is that he is a man who has held true to his beliefs and fought for them all his life. Trump on the other hand is a populist demagogue who made a late pivot into politics out of his business/entertainment career. Not that long ago he was considered to be a friend of the Clintons.

  8. It's worth noting that Obama and the Clintons are masters of deception too, but in their case it's a so-called 'enlightened' audience who have been deceived. Political parties are cults, and ideology is a curse on humanity.

  9. Obviously this is a shit show, but thanks for pointing it out Andrew and not just shaking your head and keeping quiet. Almost as bad as the people who view democracy as a game of sports and want their team to win at all costs, are the "enlightened centrists" who think not participating in politics or taking a neutral stance somehow makes them better. Politics affects basically every aspect of your life, by choosing not to participate you're letting yourself be taken advantage of. And democracy shouldn't be about which party wins or loses, ideally society in general should be winning. In the case of Trump, if you divorce his words and actions from his brand (Republican) they're still at best unintelligent and contradictory and at worse dishonest and actively harmful. This would be true even if they were coming from a Democrat.

  10. This is bullshit. The left hates Trump for what he says. For his race baiting, for his sexism, for his climate change denial, etc. If he believed and acted in accordance with their beliefs, they'd speak well of him. It would require a drastic turn around to reverse the negative perceptions of him, but that's what your hypothetical is suggesting. It's a useless assertion anyway, since it's impossible to prove or even provide evidence for. As for your end justifies the means argument for Trump support, no matter how ignoble his conduct - have some goddamn integrity. It's true that many on tbe left mindlessly follow 'their guy', but there are also people out there with integrity, who are ready to criticise the deatructive policies of Obama or Hillary and the damage they've done to the world. Suppoting Trump on the other hand is excusing a lot of shitty human behaviour for the sake of 'your guys' holding power. Be careful of what you're undermimining and what you're going to lose.

  12. Stills: I'm looking for a FF 24mm 1.8 at least equivalent look. I'll be working on a refugee camp and that's how I will mainly be portraying. On video side I need the best HD I can get for doc cimea verite stiyle to be eventually matched with a C100. I need to get as close as possible to something that gives me the most DR and best colours with the lowest disk space. Sharp enough so than I don't to shoot 4k, which usually demands more space, makes battery last less and eventually heats up. I'll be working on the brazilian/venezuelan border. So tough body and overheating is nice (RP, 3) at the same time, since it's an military area, an unobtrusive and low profile options with pancakes are a plus ( 30, M6mkii). I also consider buying an used ricoh grII. Having this in mind, so far my options are: x-t30 + 16mm 1.4 = $1,700 X-t3+ 16mm 1.4= $1900 Canon M6MkII + 16mm 1.4 = $1230 Canon EOS RP+ sigma 24mm 1.4 = $ 1670 I'm leaning towards either the RP or m6mkii so far. but not sure. What would you pick? P.S: I would add 32mm 1.4 for M6MKII, and 35mm 1.8 RP. For fujis, since no digital stabilization, I would skip the 35mm 1.4 and buy the 18-55 2.8-f4 + 35mm 1.2 artisans

  13. Just check out Phil Holland's handy tools: http://phfx.com/tools/formatCompare/ For example, at 6k full sensor the Komodo is 1.33x crop from standard full-frame: http://phfx.com/tools/formatCompare/formatCompare.cgi?makeA=RED&modelA=Komodo+6K&formatA=6K+FF&makeB=Kodak&modelB=Film&formatB=FF35+Still+3%3A2&focalLengths= And has a 1.6x crop at 5k full frame: http://phfx.com/tools/formatCompare/formatCompare.cgi?makeA=RED&modelA=Komodo+6K&formatA=5K+FF&makeB=Kodak&modelB=Film&formatB=FF35+Still+3%3A2&focalLengths= So, if you used the speedbooster at 5k full sensor on the Komodo, it would get prettty darn close to a full-frame FOV. Pretty sweet.

  14. Shooting on an EOS R, right? Please shoot a FF still and see how big the image circle is so we can find out if it will work on the larger Komodo sensor! It won't be exact, but if you just figure out how many pixels wide you could go with a 16x9 frame, and then divide 6720 by that number, it should give you the maximum size it will cover in terms of crop factor. So, fingers crossed it covers ~5200px on the EOS R.

You can spot the fools duped by the Soviet propaganda machine because they regurgitate the buzzword phrases they’ve been fed; “so-called,” “like a fiddle,” “the libs,” etc. You all sound like someone pulled the string on the back of your Putin dolly. So far the right-wing commenters here are relying on gaslighting, straw men, and false equivalency. Not a single fact or citation to defend Comrade Trump. But I suppose if this was the guy I thought was a hero of the people, I’d have nothing to go on either. ?

    RED Komodo

This camera is going to be huge if they get a few things right. Battery choice is perfect. Non-proprietary media is awesome. Large then Suoer35 sensor for 1.3x (or so) crop. RF Mount with variable ND or speedbooster means full-frame at 5K. Redcode is still the friendliest raw format for file size or quality. Love the size and modularity for gimbal or handheld or travel work. Can use a host of monitors. RF lenses are getting better and better. PDAF could be incredilble, but we'll see what Red can do in this arena. Of all the cameras I've used, the Red Helium and Gemini still have the best image quality by far. So throw that into the mix. Excited for this camera.

  17. All else being equal, I'd suggest the RP + 24 1.4. This is because the 24 1.4 can be stopped down a bit to get to 1.8 equivalent, and therefore be slightly sharper at a given DoF. This would also mean you can match CS much easier to the C100 down the track. Of course, all else isn't equal, so work out what you care about more and prioritise the setups accordingly... I'm also assuming that the RP doesn't have a crop, but that might be risky with a Canon?

  18. If conservatives believe in climate change, how come their President denies it and they refused to do anything about it for decades? Boomers have been massively irresponsible and totally screwed future generations. The south is poor because they pursued a path of low taxes and low educational investment. The US economy has shifted to technology and services; metropolitan areas with educated workforces have thrived. Low-skilled work has been outsourced to low-wage countries thanks to destructive free-trade deals. Bernie Sanders' money is largely from writing a best-selling book. He could have made a lot more money if he were crooked.

  19. The Trump economy is growing at the same rate as the Obama economy, in spite of Trump's massive tax cut stimulus and deregulation. And it's growing at a far cry from the 3-4%+ that he promised. Plus, the new jobs that are being created are part-time and/or low-paying, which is part of the reason the top 10-20% of wage earners are pulling away from the bottom. This is the problem Bernie wants to address. Fun fact: the average US GDP growth in the 1950s was over 4% and the top marginal income tax rate was 91%.

  21. And that should scare the S**t out of most people because China is on the rise. Everybody in the world seems to hate America because there the hegemonic. Imagine what China will be like. "The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition." Health care for illegal immigrants? 6 year olds should be reassigned genders? There's no difference between men and women? Trump colluded with Russia? Every conservative I know thinks climate change is real, we just realize that China and India produce 100's of times more carbon than the US. Maybe the reason why the American south is so poor is because the richest area in the country is washington D.C. Bernie Sanders has never had a real job but he's worth over 6 million?

  23. The difference is I do believe at their core their intent was to support and improve their country. The reason why I believe this is because they have a history of campaigning for and demonstrating consideration for social issues throughout their lives, they didn't just suddenly get into politics right when their TV career was starting to flounder. Trump by comparison has demonstrated time and time again that the only thing he cares about is his own ego. The country and the people come second to making sure everyone is always talking about him and valuing him all the time.

    Hybrid Mono Tripod

You could always buy a couple of solid quick-release plate/sockets and put them in-between the head and the tripod/monopod, then you could quick-change the head from one to the other, even with the camera attached. It's some cost and some hassle and some weight, but if time is that important in how you shoot (which it might be) then you might find it worthwhile.

    Hybrid Mono Tripod

Sachter Flowtech is a faster way of adjusting a tripod - I think with a little practice it would be faster than my monopod with snap locks. After tinkering with one for awhile in B&H, its really well thought out. https://www.sachtler.com/en/flowtech/ But I mostly use a video monopod with a wide feet base or a gimbal these days, so my tripod usage is pretty small in comparison and I really can't justify the cost of high end sticks. 28. Bro, if what Trump says can't be taken literally, than nothing he says can be believed. See the problem, for the so-called leader of the free world? What's fine for talk-show hosts, TV personalities and wrestling buffoons doesn't work so well in the White House. And "liberal media"? Grow up! You really think Comcast and Disney are funding pinko-liberalism or a Marxist revolution? Even the explicit "liberal" advocacy found in places like MSNBC represents the corporate wing of the Democratic party. If Rachel Madow started advocating a Bernie Sanders program, she'd be fired in a day.

  29. Believe me, I'm well aware that there's a strategy to manipulate the media, but can we agree that any and all assertions from the POTUS are rarely "little stuff"? You know, I've heard that "not a big deal" "just a joke" argument as well. My reply is that lies matter, regardless. I'll always think it's demonstrably detrimental to the nation. Personal emotional truths are valued over factual evidence, and that doesn't lead to good places in a society that needs to be secular and inclusive to all its citizens. Now, you may disagree with that fundamental assertion of what the USA should be regarding evidential facts, and think my rationality is wrong from the start. One of my friends in particular has realized we're somewhat at odds with this attitude, given his religious devotion, so we know our perspectives --we've learned to cope as best we can. Nevertheless, hewing to some sort of ideals and reality is a thing that is important, especially in a person unable to hold onto evidential facts being the POTUS. Petty lies matter or nothing does. I'd also say, the whole "not a big deal, you shouldn't be so angry" shtick is an argumentative retreat I've hashed out with my friends too. It's a dismissal and avoidance of criticism; ultimately a sort of "shoot the messenger." Maybe tolerating criticism is just something that's not as easily shared if you're a right-leaning personality? It often seems that way in my experience. I mean, we had some fun arguments when Obama was POTUS, but I personally really never cared too much about allowing such criticisms. To be fair, I also hang with some hard-core liberals that are annoyingly intolerable with their skewed attitudes about stuff. Like nails on a chalkboard. So, yeah, the "angry" thing as a broad brush? Not sure about that nor the fairness of the attitude. Never mind that I'm...as my mom would often say... not angry (with my country or POTUS) I'm disappointed. So, here's a good example of what I wrote. The plain and simple fact is that the plant was initiated under the previous administration. By your reasoning, Barrak Obama should be the one to take the credit. (and to be clear, I don't really believe the POTUS should take economic credit for everything) Yet, DT did. His assertion is a lie, the extrapolation you've drawn from it is questionable ("some companies have changed direction" would like to see your notated examples on that, as I'm aware of companies that are doing more of the same they'd be doing otherwise, but now with stock buy backs, which can be easily argued that hurt the economy overall), but here you are offering him praise rather than skepticism. Like I'm saying, either the facts matter or nothing does. It's how DT can get away with "No Quid Pro Quo!" with his supporters even though that assertion is in direct conflict by openly admitted fact from those that run his administration. This is what manipulation and propaganda looks like and it's not a small thing.

  30. I, for one, am going to vote for Bernie Sanders again in the Democratic primary. I actually believe him when he tells me his values. I believe he values human rights. I believe he wants to stop the suffering in the U.S. that is caused by oligarchs manipulating the political system to unfairly hoard an increasing share of the national wealth while removing the social safety net for the vulnerable part of the population. He wants to halt climate change. And he wants to make the world more peaceful. In short, he's a warrior for justice.

  31. Please don't sand it, it's a hack, not a fix. The tolerances on the housing are very tight, If your iscorama is warped, the plastic body is not ideally concentric around the lens helical (which is brass to brass, so no warping there for sure). What you need to do is to adjust the smaller metal ring and the way it sits around the plastic body using three small grub screws, until it's perfectly concentric. Try tightening them quarter turn at a time. It's a game of balance, and time spent doing this depends on how bad the warping of the plastic is. Just play with those screws, spend 10, 15, 30 minutes if needed, quarter turn at a time. Loosen one screw and tighten two others to move the small metal ring in the opposite direction of where the traction happens. Alternatively you can take a caliper, measure the body in the pace where traction occurs, and compare that diameter measurement to the perpendicular diameter of the oval of the body. If the difference is drastic, like 0.5mm or more, you can try to squeeze the plastic in the direction of bigger diameter, to alter the shape a bit. If iscorama was stored on the side it could be warped that way. It sounds a bit barbaric to squeeze the plastic, but it's the issue some of my customers had and it help them. Just be gentle. One person measured the tolerance of their rama and the difference in diameters was 1.2mm which is crazy – that polymer really does not age well, plus if the lens was laying in a box on it's side for 50 years it shows too. Also Germans chose a material that simply cannot have good tolerances even in theory – I have several iscoramas, some have nameplates that are exactly 72mm, but some have it at 72.8, and some at 71.2 – this is crazy, and some of them don't even screw into standard metal filters, simply because they're too big. Maxiscope was my attempt to fix this issue for good, as it's a full metal body that replaces plastic, so you don't have to rely on tolerances and issues of the plastic body anymore. Hope this helps.

Everyone knows Trump didn't open that factory, that it has been making the previous generation Mac Pros for years now. He DID, however, convince Tim Cook to bring production BACK to Austiin, Texas after previously stating that the new Mac Pro would be made in China. So in a sense he did kind of open that factory again. Those of us who are logical and unbiased knew what he was implying. Get over it and stick with cameras, please. They centralize wealth, debase currencies and cheapen labor. Trump (but really the American system) getting attacked for attacking their system, the Anglo-Dutch liberal financial system. Lots of propaganda out there. Mind you Obama made it legal when he repealed the Smith act. Trump will win in the end, has the backing of the military, it’s really CIA vs NSA duking it out.
