I've been using the Canon FD 50mm 1.2 L lens I had modified to EF mount a lot lately and I must say it is quickly becoming one of my favorite lenses. I'd be curious to know how this lens resolves on 4K cameras, if anybody has any insight. On my 5D3, with ML Raw, it's slightly soft, some may say organic, but it has great separation... both color and subject. I find I like it with muted tones, though. I can really see why Canon used the optical designs from the FD lenses for their K-35 cinema glass.5 points

Why 8K TV is a non-starter for PC users
leslie and 4 others reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
I've said it before, delivery in 8K doesn't appeal to me as a consumer. I don't want to sit that close to my TV to appreciate 8K. I don't have room for a TV any bigger than 65 inches without dedicating an entire wall to a single screen. I really am satisfied watching 4K on a 55 inch set from 10 feet away. As a creator, I can't think of many times when I've told myself "I really wish I had more resolution to play with." That might change, but the bulk of my work is still exported at 1080p. There really isn't much demand for 4K, from my experience, and most people still watch 1080p video on their 4K TVs because there's a limited amount of 4K channels / content available. This push for 8K this quickly really seems silly and little more than a marketing move to sell people TVs they don't really need.5 points -

In light of the recent arguments on EOSHD I thought it'd be cool to think about how awesome it is to be a filmmaker/videographer in 2019 going into 2020. We don't have to settle for crappy 8 bit anymore on anything less than $5000, we even have multiple cameras that shoot compressed raw and/or ProRes for less than $2.5K! We have lenses from 3rd party makers that not only don't suck but are better in some cases. Wireless monitoring and follow focuses are affordable now!? What!? Our options for post are incredible, too - We have Final Cut and Resolve that are rock solid and Adobe... Adobe sometimes doesn't crash now! ? Frame.io and Vimeo review help make working remotely way less frustrating We get to bash Canon while shooting on Fuji/Sony/Nikon/Blackmagic instead of bashing them because we have no other choice And on top of that all we have places like here where we get to talk about it all and get help and share our sometimes very strong opinions ? I hope you guys see my sarcasm where I sprinkled it in. I encourage you to go ahead and post what you're grateful for:4 points -

No worries. I'll follow that up with more advice that you probably don't want to hear (lol)... I'm also a hobbyist who shoots for fun and I've also missed shots due to camera stability (plus I hate the jittery hand-held look when there's no stabilisation so that's an aesthetic choice). I shoot GH5 hand-held with fully-manual lenses and therefore rely on the IBIS a lot. It's spectacular, but has its limits. Here's the advice you probably don't want to hear, unless you absolutely have to, don't shoot hand-held. If you can shoot with a tripod or monopod, do that. Can't do those? Shoot with a shoulder rig or one of those grips that work like the stock of a rifle that you brace against your shoulder (or rest it on your belt). Can't do those? Get a loupe and press the camera against your face for stabilisation. Can't do those? Take @Anaconda_'s advice and learn to stabilise with a camera strap as the third point of contact. ONLY after you've done those things should you go to shooting hand-held and relying on IBIS. I shoot hand-held but I can make a decent argument about all of the above, and have shot something like a dozen camera tests and half-a-dozen finished videos without any form of IS just to see if it was possible but even though I developed the skill it still didn't give me the look I wanted. Cameras are awesome to talk about and fun to play with but you'd have to be pretty freaking good for a new camera to improve your videos more than taking the time you're spending talking about it and putting that into developing your technique, and putting the money you'd spend on equipment into unpaid leave from work and (you guessed it) developing your skills. Some of the best videos online are shot with very modest equipment, or are uploaded in 720p to Vimeo from back in the day and are glorious despite not even being 1080. Here's one: Everything about this is glorious except the image quality, which your G7 would absolutely annihilate, but it's still better than anything I will ever make. Most people are probably the same. OK, lecture over. Talking about modes on the GH5, I did some tests for myself between the 6K 200Mbps 4:3 10-bit h265 mode, the 4K 150Mbps 10-bit h264 mode, the 4K 50p 150Mbps 8-bit mode, and the 1080p50 10-bit ALL-I mode and concluded that the 6K mode wasn't worth the extra effort in post, and in 50p it was more useful having 4K than 10-bit. Therefore, the modes I use are: 4K 150Mbps h264 10-bit 25p (this is by default - I only shoot slow-motion if I know I will want it in post) 4K 50p (if I want the dreamy but almost-reality look) 1080p125 (for sports, or if I want something to be a shot that screams LOOK AT ME I'M IN SLOW MOTION ISN'T THIS AWESOME) For sports, the advice I got was to shoot ~120p unless you know you're going to want sound for that shot, in which case shoot normal speed, eg for huddles or pre-post-game interactions. This was from @Mako Sports and makes a whole lot of sense and makes it really easy to know what modes to use when you're out shooting. I also didn't want to pay for UHS-II cards, so am limited to the above bit-rates, but YT is only something like 25Mbps in 4K, and much less in 1080, so the difference between 150Mbps and 400 is probably inconsequential unless you've got a distribution deal of some kind. Plus, if you must spend money, read this thread first...... I think there should be some kind of rule, like every lens should cost at least half of what your camera body costs......2 points

Heck these days you can edit 4K on a $550ish custom PC build. Rendering and export might not be very fast, but playback and editing is fine. Editing wise computers have come a long way and fast since the days when H264 would strangle my computer to death! I remember how frustrating it was to edit it on my top of the line Mac Pro 10 years ago!2 points -

Fellow G7 user here. Honestly, I would use the money toward better glass, lighting, etc. Now this all depends on if you don’t already have these. But if you don’t, or have them but they are lower end, consider going this route. Maybe by an 18-35 and viltrox speedbooster, and an aperture 120d or something. I’ve been tempted to upgrade my g7, but I’ve decided investing in hq glass and lighting is a better investment. If you are fine with lighting and lenses you have, I personally think that your next camera really depends on your shooting style. Doing turn and gun? Need a complete, ultra-reliable package with great IBIS? Gh5/G9 is for you. Don’t need IBIS and want larger sensor/better stills? XT3 for you. Really we can’t determine this for you. It really depends on your shooting style. Honestly I still think the g7 is fine. I would invest in better glass and lights. You will notice more improvement there.2 points

Looking at options is great, but you end up trying to compare if IBIS is better than having an extra 1.35 stops of DR, and you get no-where. My advice is to: Understand the offerings in terms of what features they offer Review how you work and what features on offer actually matter Review if there are any limitations in how you work that would be eliminated (eg, IBIS makes going hand-held an option for some people) Evaluate the tech against your requirements and how you work No point buying a camera because it works better for someone else and gets great reviews for doing things that you don't do. And remember that when you're reading reviews most people who write reviews are review writers and may not actually do anything else except make reviews. Which is why vloggers only review cameras as vlogging cameras....2 points

We enthusiasts and pros are the success story of the entire camera industry. The entire DSLR filmmaking, and now mirrorless video revolution happened on a big downward slope for the a camera industry battered by smartphones. Now, with the not very passionate consumers gone, there's only us left...and now the central focus of ALL the camera companies, big or small. We are not a niche any more, and Nikon in their latest financial report expects enthusiasts, hobbyists, artists, filmmakers and pros to account for 90% of sales in the mid to long term. Going to write a blog post about that soon. We kept the passion up, when everybody else was losing theirs.2 points -

Its the time to be alive for Indie filmmakers. Cheap high quality audio equipment is also abound. The Zoom F6 has so much dynamic range its almost impossible to set the levels wrong all in something smaller than a loaf of bread. High powered high CRI LED's are also becoming affordable. The Pixel video light has a similar output to a 1500w fresnel and its only $450.2 points -

Gahhh, you're talking way too much sense for my liking @kye. I think you've crushed any argument I have for purchasing a new camera, especially when you take into account that I only shoot for fun. Looking at that video (which is awesome by the way), it's crazy to see how far cameras have come in such a short amount of time and how spoiled we are with all the low cost options that are available today. Imagine what filmmakers would be thinking if you could go back in time 15 years and show them something like the G7. They would be blown away. Meanwhile, here I am, a casual hobbyist at best, thinking that I need gradable 10bit footage to shoot some video tests that probably no one is ever going to see. Hah! Thanks for putting things into perspective for me. My wallet thanks you. Ok scrap everything I just said. NEW CAMERA! NEW CAMERA! hahaha1 point

Loved that lens! The three FD aspheric element L primes are all favourites for me (24 1.4L, 50 1.2L, 85 1.2L). I had to sell my 50 L and would have one again except I got the Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 instead and it is (for me) even better. Still, the FD 50 L was by far my favourite legacy normal lens. I still use the 24 1.4 and if i could ever get my 85 1.2 fixed (it has the dissolving bearing issue that affects some FD lenses) and could afford another 50 L, I would really like to get the band back together again.1 point

Upgrading from the Panasonic G7
IronFilm reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
Eff lighting and lenses... NEW CAMERA! ? That's really good advice, honestly. I'll still be filming on my GH5 for years to come and will likely sell my G85 and buy a second GH5 used when the used price lowers down even more. One, it's an incredible camera, and two, your camera isn't all that important, especially these days when you can get lovely images on a $300 camera. My lenses, mics, lights, filters, etc. are all things that will carry over with me for years and years to come. One thing I would suggest is, if you think you're going to move away from M43 in the not so distant future it'd probably make sense to invest in lenses that can adapt to other cameras. I have two Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 lenses for my multi camera / sports / event work because having a native lens in those situations is beneficial. The rest of my lenses are pretty much all vintage and manual lenses with other mounts that I can easily adapt should the day come when I move to a different system. Switching systems can get pretty expensive, especially if you have to get all new lenses. Another reason to stick with the G7 is that it still has a very nice image. It's a little limiting when it comes to color grading, dynamic range, etc. but to me it's still a relevant camera in 2019 and beyond, especially for beginners and hobbyists. Though I've started suggesting the G85 to beginners and hobbyist since the used price has gone down so much, the G7 is still a killer little camera.1 point -

i should first commend you thats an awesome effort to lose that amount of weight. I carry more kilo's than i care to think about... in theory losing weight should make everything else easier, getting older does suck and it does complicate things. A visit to a gp will quickly rule out several possibilities and narrow the problem down. buying a pair of shoes may help alleviate the pain for now but may not lead to a long term solution. i know this because when i turned 50 i had to get glasses for general day to day stuff. turned 51 i had to get reading glasses, now i'm 52 its time i upgraded the general day to day glasses? having lived long enough to get to a mature age, wisdom for me, dictates that i start looking after things so that i can live a life and not end up some decrepit grumpy old man. You'll notice an improvement in IQ on all those cameras, for sure, though the G7 is still has a very good image. What kind of work are you doing? For me personally I lean towards the GH5 because the IBIS and all of the video centric features. I do a lot of handheld work, and the IBIS allows me to get stable footage with a stripped down set up. It's kind of the Swiss army knife of cameras, it can handle pretty much everything you throw at it. The 1080p on the GH5 is also fantastic. Still if the X-T3 had comparable IBIS and didn't have the recording limit I'd be very, very tempted.1 point -

Kowa 16-H , Kowa B&H, Elmo II and Kowa 8-Z are all the same lens - just a different branding. 16-H and 8-Z tend to cost just a tiny bit less than Elmo II, which is slightly cheaper than B&H. I'd say 250 $ - 300 $ for a copy in very good condition. Though it may take you some time to get a deal like this. Kowa B&H usually runs for about 900 - 1000 $ nowadays. Every year it becomes more and more expensive.. 16-H → 800 - 900 $. Remember that 16-D goes under many names: Sankor, Singer, Kowa, etc. I really recommend joining Anamorphic Shooters group on Facebook so that you can see all the marketplace posts.1 point -
I'm in a very similar position, wanting to upgrade my take everywhere camera from my loved GX80 to something with a mic input at the very least. IBIS is amazing, but I think there are other things in a camera that are more important. (codec, bitrate, etc.) For a few weeks, I've been to-and-fro-ing between the Fuji XT30, XT3 and XH1 (and every now and then the Sigma FP, but I'm pretty sure that's ruled out after a conversation in that thread). XT30 is amazingly cheap at the moment, and similarish in size to the GX80. - But I feel like if I go with that, I'll be pining over it's bigger brother in a couple months. XT3 has the best video specs of the three with 10bit DCI 60p and the best 1080/120p XH1 tops out at 8bit DCI 24p, but it does have IBIS. As for Black Friday deals. I'm not sure if it's the same where you are, but in Europe Fuji has a €200 cashback on many of their cameras. This will last until 5th Jan, so it can give you more time to think about it. I think the worst thing you could do is rush into a decision just because there's a sale. After all, if you're only now upgrading from the 5-year-old g7, this next one will likely need to keep you happy for another 5 years. There will be another sale in January, then an easter sale, then summer sale. @thebrothersthre3 - XT3 can shoot in h264 as well, unless you want DCI60/50p - any other resolution or frame rate is fine for h2641 point

stv reacted to thebrothersthre3 for a topic
The jump in IQ is definitely more noticeable with the XT3. The GH5 has the best 1080p though, virtually no moire/aliasing. The XT3 is definitely more prone to moire and aliasing but less so in 4k. The XT3 definitely is ahead in the 4k department having 10 bit in 4k 60p. Its 120p also beats the GH5's imho. The extra stop and a half of dynamic range is noticeable on the XT3 coming from the GH5, even more noticeable coming from a G7. If you have a slower PC the GH5's H254 10 bit is nice, especially in 1080p. 10 bit H264 200mbps All-I runs nicely in premiere. Fuji you are stuck with H265 which is a bitch, but if you have a better PC its no problem. If you can link up with some local video people and test out the cameras that's always the best way. You'd be surprised how many people would be willing to do that. I think you'd definitely appreciate either camera. The IBIS on the GH5 can be magical.1 point -
Was at B&H a couple days ago and I am absolutely floored by how small/light the E2’s are. I forgot to grab a pic, but they had a S1h on the shelf next to the Zcams and when I handled both the S1h felt absolutely gargantuan. Same for the Pocket 4/6k’s. They also had the Meike knockoffs of the Veydra cine lenses. When paired with a E2 that’s an amazing small combo. I think I’m going to shift from hybrid do it all bodies to splitting my photo and video into at least two bodies. The S1h and the Zcams are at the top of my list. I just have a lot of reservations about buying into the L mount. chris1 point

The Zoom F8 when it came out 4 ish years was a MASSIVE GAME CHANGER for the sub $1K price point, but *not* just for audio quality like many people think, and not just for how many tracks it was (ten!), but also for it feature set! Nothing else beforehand had all those features which the F8 now has: metadata, bluetooth app, affordable dedicated fader panel, USB keyboard, automix, ambisonics, TC I/O, and more and more it goes on... plus all in a very very small size! With a low power drain. Unfortunately the F8 came out at a bad bad time for me, as: a) I had just recently invested in a Sound Devices 552 / Tascam DR680 combo (arguably for its time, the "best" low low low budget setup??) & b) I was VERY skeptical about anything from Zoom (due to their horribly poor reputation) But the users and reviews of the F8 turned my opinion around, so I got the F4 when it got launched. And wow, what a big leap forward that was for me!1 point

It's definitely a great time to be a film-maker.. One test that I think it useful is the "If I knew then what I know now" test, as it shows how much knowledge and skill count vs the other factors. In film-making, yes, going back a decade (or two!) we would all make much better films (well, those of us who have made lots of films in the last decade!) but we'd have been doing so with far inferior equipment choices, and apart from memorising the lottery numbers before we went back in time, pretty much nothing we could have done about it. Of course going back in time we'd have looked at the camera options and decided to spend the money on lighting and other things, which is still great advice, but tech is tech and (capable) cameras per year that someone can afford when adjusted against minimum / median wage is an equation that has tipped radically.1 point

The US has been heading for a financial collapse for the last few years (since the Dollar Store and Wallmark rise). Now China is literally taking away millions of US jobs and Fortune 500 is inundated with Chinese Companies. Apple would have been relegated to 4th or 5th position in smartphone sales, if the US wasnt doing all the shady stuff it is (to be fair, US Trade and IP Laws have been anything but fair since they were created). Also TikTok and other chinese tech startups are going to be displacing Twitter and Facebook (even though it doesn't do similar things to either) very soon. Put in a session with the p4k and the lomo 40mm and elmoscope this afternoon. the lomo fits inside the clamp housing and slides in nearly 10mm, no vignetting with it at either up against the elmo or sitting at the back of the clamp. the only issue is that the lomo has the aperture adjustment on the front close to the lens which is a pain in the ass. So its not a long term solution but at least i learned 40mm doesn't vignette on the p4k with the elmoscope. 35mm does vignette with the elmo but since i usually crop the sides it would probably be ok. Thats a test i want to do soon. One layer of masking tape allows for a nice snug fit with a cheap 77 step up filter and nd on the front of the elmo.
