    DJI Mavic Pro II

I had so much fun shooting with Mavic 2 Pro. Felt like a kid who got his first video game console. H265 in 10bit holds up surprisingly well. I graded my video in HDR and didn't experience any issues other than slight banding in the gradients.

  4. At this point in time Vlog on the S1 is superior as they got rid of the ghosting issue at higher ISO's as well as the color clipping issue with blue lights.

  5. Plenty of reasons for the GH5: Waveform monitoring XLR accessory compatibility Anamorphic desqueeze etc These might not matter to you now, but who knows, maybe it will in 6 months or 18 months time? Plus in a couple of years from now when maybe you will sell it, I bet the GH5 will hold up better on the 2ndhand market than the G9 (just because the GH series is more famous) Remember for many years the GH series was the best of the best that Panasonic offered for stills photography, I wouldn't be too worried at all about this aspect. Another year survived! Phew I'd like this, definitely affordable if lighting is something you need/use: https://www.came-tv.com/collections/hmi-light-kit-economic/products/hmi-fresnel-light-1200w-220v-electronic-ballast-dimmable

  7. Been testing the S1H for a few days and thought I'd share a few thoughts. First impression was that this is a large, heavy camera! A couple of other colleagues were taken aback by the size too. However one colleague who is used to shooting stills with a Canon 1DX mkII thought it was fine and fit nicely in the hand, so I guess it depends what you're used to. The menus are quite similar to what I remember from the GH5, although I sold mine about a year ago so it's not that fresh in my memory. At the moment I use a Canon C200 and have a Fuji X-T3 as my personal camera so it was a bit of an adjustment, and the S1H certainly lacks the tactile retro pleasure of the Fuji, and also lacks the video specific buttons of the C200. I was pleased by the look and feel of the 24-105 F4 lens, which gives nice shallow DOF when required. It was silent and well made, although coming from Fuji lenses recently my first impression was that it's massive! Again, it's just because I'm not used to it. Now for my worst thing about the camera - the autofocus is really a drag. I was so excited about this camera and initially the weird pulsing and searching autofocus took the wind out of my sails and gave me a very bad first impression. Even in stills it doesn't seem very precise or reliable, particularly in lower light. The face and person recognition sometimes works great, but is never reliable. You just never know when it's going to decide to defocus and start searching. Compared to Canon, Sony, and even Fuji AF, this feels like a massive step back. I hate the way it defocuses past the subject before snapping back, even in stills mode it really irritates me. I've learned to adjust to it a bit in the short time I've had with the camera (only a couple of days) and I'm sure I would learn to work around it, but it's a massive drawback, and I was really disappointed by the still performance, which is usable but just not at the level I'm used to. And finally my favourite thing about this camera... The image quality and colour is fantastic. Beautiful. Perfect 4k. I did try the 6k modes but only a little as it's not a big deal for me right now and also my Mac Pro choked on it! The colour in this new generation of Panasonics is strikingly good. I prefer it to Canon even. it's more realistic yet beautiful. Arri-like. And such crisp, beautiful unsharpened image quality. While I would say it still lacks the purely cinematic look of the old-school blackmagics or Arri, it's a wonderful modern image. I'd put it 2 leagues ahead of the GH5, Z-Cam E2 (which I owned for a short while) and way ahead of the Sonys. I don't know which I prefer between the S1H and C200 purely in image quality, but I think it might be the Panasonic. It's close, and I vastly prefer working with the S1H for it's form factor when run-and-gunning. The V-log is just gorgeous. It's making me consider buying a S1 just for personal use, just when I'd vowed to get over my GAS! So those are just a few quick thoughts. My bottom line is, if the autofocus was good this would be an essential camera. As it is, it puts this camera in a really tough spot. Yes the image is fantastic, and yes 'real filmmakers don't use autofocus', but most of us want and would use good autofocus. Once you've gotten used to it, it's very hard to go back! Especially for one man band operators like myself. It's so close to being perfect that I'm left quite frustrated. I guess the next generation is probably worth waiting for. But at the same time I'm haunted by how good that image is... It reminds me of how I used to feel when I looked at rushes from my Ursa Mini 4.6k. it's just pleasing and cinematic somehow. Satisfying for the IQ geek in me. I just wish that the AF was better. Hoping for a firmware improvement, but it's pretty clear it will never be up there with the best in the class unfortunately, and when the new 1DX miii comes out, I would expect a big price drop on this camera. EDIT I forgot to mention the slow motion. The 120-180fps isn't great to be honest, very soft compared to what I'm used to with the Fuji X-T3, which was another disappointment. Again, hoping for improvements in firmware, but not holding my breath. I think good crisp 120fps should be pretty much standard on a top level pro-sumer camera these days.

  8. I've been shooting social media videos for nonprofits for a few years and graduated to micro-docs for online distribution. Now, it looks like I'll be able to bundle enough funds from donors (my *real* job is development, aka fundraising) to shoot an ~15-25 minute documentary for online distro plus entering into environmental film festivals and for our main sponsor to play at conferences around the country. In real-world cinema terms, it will still be a no-budget production (sub 20k). I'm mainly getting funds for my salary and traveling expenses, plus a tiny bit for gear. I shoot run and gun with my own gear, currently an X-T3/Ninja V rig. I suspect/hope that image quality will be just enough to get by with. I don't expect to get a anamorphic setup going anytime soon, so the question becomes what ratio to shoot in. I was thinking I would film in DCI 4k on the Ninja and drop the footage into a FLAT (1.85:1) timeline and export in either 2 or 4k. However, this Filmmaker article says that unless I'm creating a DCP, festivals that accept digital files do so in 1080. Probably not a big deal, because that means if I shoot in DCI I have more wiggle room in post to compose. I'd love wise words of advice here. Audio wise, I've just ordered a Mixpre 3 ii and have Deity S-mic 2 and Samson C02 mics to boom for main sound. I hope to pick up a Sennheiser G4 lav for backup sound. If budget allows I'll get a local pro to do post for the sound. For drone footage, I've been using my M2P with the 4k HQ setting, never the mushy wide angle. I'd skip drone footage entirely, because I don't anticipate being able to shoot on anything better, but it will be a film about forestry, so drone shots are pretty impactful. Plus, my boss goes crazy for drone shots. I have friend with Phantom 4, but I'm not sure the iq is really noticeably better than the HQ setting of the M2P. My best bet is probably to be very, very judicial with drone footage in the final cut and only try to shoot with perfect golden hour light, yeah? What kinds of things should I be thinking about that I wouldn't necessarily have been shooting shorts for Facebook/YouTube? I should switch from 23.976 to real 24p right? I've shot a few interviews already that might end up in the project, but it's not a deal killer to stretch them in post by a frame a second, right? I'm currently editing in, and cursing Premiere. I've downloaded the free DaVinci but haven't had time to learn it. I've been shooting in ProRes 422 HQ, even though I edit on a PC. Not sure if I should switch to DNxHD because its been the Windows standard, even though ProRes in now pretty supported by Premiere. It's not a sealed deal yet (I've only secured enough funds to shoot a series of 4 social media shorts so far, but I'm pretty sure I'll get enough to move forward with the whole project) yet I'm pretty excited about it. It could be a major step towards moving into videography/cinematography full time. Thanks in advance for the help.

  9. Based on what Cinema5D measured and own findings as well. Should be even better with latest firmware 1.3 witch has many NR and gamut mapping improvements and doesn't cause any artifacts such as ghosting, smearing and blotches as well as blue clipping anymore. About Resolve: At least in Davinci Resolve Studio it runs flawlessly with a proper NVIDIA GPU (1660 and above).

  14. Truth is I never use proxy. But I think you can import your footage, asking to make Proxy versions. While those are being rendered, you can just edit in Original/Optimized mode. 4K 50p and h265 surpass my old Macbook capabilities. I should use Proxy for those. But I hope I will be able to get a Mac Mini or an iMac with six cores.

    Upgrading from the Panasonic G7

No worries! Yes, that's a very small taste of the Australian heat.. It's 40C today (104F) and it's what, the third day of summer? LOL, yeah, $1000+ for a 1200W light doesn't seem too affordable to me either. At least, compared to the 1000W Halogen lighting setups you can get from a hardware store for a tiny fraction of that cost, it seems expensive. I know they're not the same, but getting 40% of the capability for 5% of the price still seems like good value for money in comparison!

  19. Funny story. I bought the Godox 60w and did a fan replacement (taught myself to solder along the way). The noise definitely went down, and I'm only using it for interviews so no flicker worries at 1/48 shutter speed. It's bright enough for one or two light interview setups, but I don't think it's powerful enough to blast through a window, unless for something like an intimate kitchen or bathroom scene. Then I went and got a Ninja V. That fan is way noisier than the original 60w's was. Moral of the story? I'd like to be a big boy someday and have lights big enough to shine through a window to light my scenes someday... Maybe.

  22. You can't talk about the new MBP without talking about its potential shortcomings and alternatives. Just like in any other gear thread. I understand it might be annoying if you have no interest in switching systems but it's inevitable these things will be brought up. Btw, a pretty thorough video was already posted showing the video editing performance increase you can expect with the new MBP.

  23. Everything shot hand-held, mostly 4k60 and some rare 120fps shots. I love how you can do almost gimbal-like shots with 4k60 on GH5. I dont like 120p most of the time as it is too slow for my taste and overused. But those other filmakers which are using Sony and Canon dont have much choice if they want something as smooth. Suggest watching it in 4k.

  26. Not unreasonable.... I'm on shoots now and then with an ARRI with lens sets which cost even more than the camera body cost! Isn't at all unusual. Ditto, I was recommending the G7 to people for ages as well. But now the G85 has fallen so far, it is hard to not recommend the G85 instead of the G7 Yeah it was funny how the a6500 had WORSE 1080 than the older a6000 Ditto! Was quite freeing once I accepted my main #1 focus now is the sound department. I shoot on average maybe one paid gig per month as a "cameraman", and I don't actively seek that work. All my other shooting is casually for myself / social media, or vlogs for my YouTube channel. Honestly my Panasonic G6 could last me YEARS longer..... it is just the selfish side of me which wants a new camera ? AND AUDIO!!!! If I ever get serious about jumping back into the cinematography side of things instead of sound, then I will invest first more into lighting modifiers and support gear, such as: cutters / diffs / C stands / foggers / etc etc As even if you're using only "natural light" or just a couple of lights, then how you can tweak those lights can make a massive MASSIVE difference

    Upgrading from the Panasonic G7

An amusing test.... I just took a few shots in my backyard as a comparison. Setup one: GH5 shooting HLG in 4K, kit lens, amateur point-and-click composition, deliberately bad / basic grade.... Setup two: GF3 shooting rec709 in 1080p, "fancy" lens, a medium level of effort put into the composition and the grade (but still not expert level).. Which looks more filmic? Which makes you feel something? In this case the "fancy" lens wasn't even that fancy - it was a Helios 58mm F2 on an m42 SB. I thought it was overkill to put on one of my Voigtlander f0.95 primes, BUT having said that it would be overkill, the Voigtlanders cost less than a GH5 body, so it's comparable. Even if you say that buying a camera body "upgrades" all your lenses but buying one lens only upgrades that focal length, then sure, you're right. In that case, buy a really nice zoom lens (12-35 F2.8 or a Sigma 18-35 and a SB) or go the whole hog and go the Russian Primes and buy a whole set. Part of the organic look of the above is that the Helios is so imperfect. I'm happy to talk about how to shoot uncontrolled situations in natural light with fully-manual primes - I do it and it works great. Think about what you want to achieve, then invest in what will get you closer to that outcome.

  29. I've said it before, delivery in 8K doesn't appeal to me as a consumer. I don't want to sit that close to my TV to appreciate 8K. I don't have room for a TV any bigger than 65 inches without dedicating an entire wall to a single screen. I really am satisfied watching 4K on a 55 inch set from 10 feet away. As a creator, I can't think of many times when I've told myself "I really wish I had more resolution to play with." That might change, but the bulk of my work is still exported at 1080p. There really isn't much demand for 4K, from my experience, and most people still watch 1080p video on their 4K TVs because there's a limited amount of 4K channels / content available. This push for 8K this quickly really seems silly and little more than a marketing move to sell people TVs they don't really need.

  30. I'm grateful for the abundance of cheap equipment and software. But I'm also grateful to the thousands of people who spend their time freely sharing knowledge on sites like this, from the retired pros with decades of industry experience, to experimental newcomers with more ideas than experience, and everyone in between.

  31. If you use any EOSHD color settings you should always use the luts that are included and/or follow the instructions. If you're planning to use filmconvert it's best to shoot in unmodified profiles that are supported. Take a look at the different combinations for the A73 like "S Log 2 + Pro" or whatever they have and stick to those. But for the footage you already have why not download some canon and sony profiles and just see which one works best for you?

  32. TRIGGER WARNING "I was pushed onto the bed and Brett got on top of me. He began running his hands over my body and grinding his hips into me. I yelled, hoping someone downstairs might hear me, and tried to get away from him, but his weight was heavy. Brett groped me and tried to take off my clothes. He had a hard time because he was so drunk, and because I was wearing a one-piece bathing suit under my clothes. I believed he was going to rape me. I tried to yell for help. When I did, Brett put his hand over my mouth to stop me from screaming." You may think that's just foreplay, but as far as the law is concerned, that's sexual assault. And BTW: Running defence for a sexual predator: really gross.

  34. Oh, I'd disagree quickly with that. Who we are in life is who we are as filmmakers. Unless you're just a straight ahead craft-person singularly focused on the technical, you should always give some of what you and who you are are to your creations. I mean, that's just a prerequisite for this sort of work. Otherwise, what's really the point, right? So, I really don't have a problem with it. There's more common ground that divergence (still) than we might admit. Might be hard to believe when we're behind these keyboards a lot of time, but when one is actually out there in the real world it's evident.

  35. First of all, Buttigieg claimed to have endorsements from dozens of black South Carolinians who did not endorse him. He also sent out a message with a list of endorsements that were implied to be from black people but many people on the list were white. This is racist in and of itself: he's putting words in the mouths of African-Americans so he can fool other African-Americans into voting for him. He's also under a cloud of scandal for mishandling a police shooting (of a black person) in his town and also the firing of their first black police chief. The evidence against him is mounting, which is why he has so few black supporters and prominent blacks from South Bend have endorsed his opponents. Sanders hasn't just been saying the same things for 40 years. He has been ACCURATELY diagnosing the problems of America. There are areas where I disagree with him and I'd be happy to tell you where. It's not a cult of the personality. I like his policies the most and I believe he would enforce them. Say what you want about mental decline with age. All I know is that McConnell and Pelosi can predict the future of politics better than anyone else in the game. They know when a scandal is going to be a big deal and when it will blow over. They are more effective in their roles than younger folks have been. Experience counts. Again, I say that as a 30-year old but an avid reader of political news.

  36. Really, the Alexa is impractical for most people and I agree with Ed that there are better buys even at £5k It has such a nice image but easy to make an impulsive decision based on the name. This might even get you close to the image for MUCH less https://cvp.com/product/z-cam-e2c-4k-cinematic-camera And RED Dragon 6K getting down towards £6k now. Worth keeping an eye out for those. Much lighter at 2.2kg, so more like an Alexa Mini. And much more res plus a better raw codec, all internal.
