    Extreme telephoto work

If using jpegs and video with Canon, set it to vivid if the camera has that and if that is not enough, vivid red (my little point and shoot Canons are set to vivid....The sun has been really red here to last few days first thing and just before going down with all the smoke...even though I am hundreds of miles away from major fires, I woke up smelling a LOT of smoke a couple of days ago to the point I thought there was fire here or next door. I was going to walk up a hill early yesterday to get a photo of the sun coming up with clouds and smoke but the forecast when I looked said no cloud...so I never went and then there was the most magnificent red sun with nice cloud that i missed (42 degree day). This was one of the much better days last week and just after this the sun went really bright red but only when it got down to the far tree level. With Sony I sometimes just underexpose a bit to bring out the cloud colour so maybe that might help with the suns colour....One thing i do like with Canon ...the colour is not realistic but it is nice using vivid settings.

  3. Did you use organic oats??? That will give your footage a more "organic" look.

Not so sure about that. Crowdfunding drums up hype. It's just good business practice to capitalize on that. Don't think there's much more to it than that. That's the sorta thing Elon Musk is all about. Spending less on actual promotion and advertising... and just create hype and make people talk about it themselves. In Pokémon terms 'it's super effective!'. Also cutting out the middleman and the need for physical stores/showrooms. That's just where this is all heading imho. The JBL project that just launched is already over goal and they only ship US/DE (where usually campaigns are run worldwide; that's also how you can guage demographics and markets to focus on if you decide to go retail). The Philips campaign reached 11000% its target goal (of course the bar set low on these campaigns on purpose, they know they're likely going to get enough sales to warrant production, but here again it sounds better if you're reaching 11000% over target (creating even more hype and articles being written about you) opposed to fully funded at 101%, which is only just making it). Thing is. They already put in the market research + R&D. They can't afford to be publicly disgraced by flopping a crowdfunding campaign, that hurts more than it would gain. The products of these established companies are probably already production ready. They don't come out with a cardboard prototype and go like 'so... this is version 1.0, we'll make some more iterations as we continue to tweak the concept, let's embark on this journey together! We're looking forward to your support to make this idea a reality!'. They know what they've got and that it will be a banger... the question is just... will it be a small fire cracker or will it blow up like TNT. Crowdfunding can elevate its success for them with very little effort from their side. These sharks are just trying new waters to fish... _______________________________________________________________________________________________ But anyways... Some more Tom Antos perhaps? New vid:

  5. Happy Christmas everyone. Anybody getting anything camera-related for themselves or family? I myself am tempted by a used Hasselblad X1D which is now down to £2400. Must resist

  7. The inconsistent metering is very annoying. It seems to work best in low light. The issue that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere is having to restart internal recording a few times before it will work. Last night, the first time I hit record, it stopped after about 2 seconds. Then it worked fine. Another time, I hit record 5 times with it doing the 2 second recordings and then it worked on the 6th try and recorded until I stopped it. Those times it was All-I 4k 24p but it also happened on a raw 12bit 1080p recording. Took 2 tries that time. I love the build of the camera and it is capable of producing beautiful IQ but the metering and lack of modern conveniences (decent video AF, moveable screen, etc) has me leaning toward a return. Thanks to the holidays, though, I have until Feb 1 to make up my mind.

  9. You won't get scopes, but you can get 24" HD TV or computer screens for a couple dollars at a thrift store. I think if you want semi accurate image analysis tools you'll have a hard time finding something for cheap.

  10. Thank you very much! About gear, I used micro four third stuff. A Panasonic G85 with Panasonic lenses: 12-35mm f2.8, 15mm f1.7 and 42.5mm f1.2. I used Magic Bullet Looks in Premiere Pro and a LUT that's called "AriColour 4k Cine Pop". Changed the tint and colours hue to get more reddish skin tones, blurred a bit (as m4/3 is way too sharp) and added grain. This radically changed the look of the film. That's interesting to see that you can get good results without cinema lenses and a high end camera. AriColour_4k_Cine_Pop.cube

  11. For me, the shutter delay currently is a deal breaker for using the camera for serious, daily photography. You can easily test it: Turn 'Shutter Blackout' off in the camera menu (section 'Shoot', 5th tab), shoot a digital stopwatch like this one, and you will see that the actually recorded picture has been taken 0.1 seconds later than the picture/frame shown (and briefly frozen) in the camera display after pressing the shutter button. It literally means that you can't take snapshots of moving subjects with the camera, at least not in a predictable way. Unreliable focus and inconsistent metering make this a camera with an unusually high amount of pictures you have to throw away in post because of missed moments, missed focus and wrong exposure. I have to second DPreview's opinion that the fp is one of the worst cameras released in 2019, from a stills photography perspective. It's most likely the worst full-frame photography camera currently on the market, maybe even the worst full frame digital photography camera ever released. In fact, a $250 EOS-M100 (with its similar-sized body and a pancake lens like the Canon 22mm/f2) beats it as a stills camera, except for the sensor size. Since I had both cameras, I know what I'm talking about... [and would already regret having given the EOS-M100 to my girlfriend after I bought the Sigma - if it hadn't been for my girlfriend...]

    Skydio 2

I was in the first batch and have not received my drone yet. But after watching some of the early reviewers I messaged them yesterday and asked to cancel my order. 1 - the AI follow mode looks interesting, but was not impressive. I think the technology needs another 2-3 years to mature. 2 - Mavic 2 pro (was discounted to near the same price) is probably a better choice for me who wants a better camera for photography 3 - video the HDR mode of skydio looks promising for daylight, but for lowlight the mavic 2 seem to be doing better. 4 - the drone tracking you is not very cinematic. To get the cinematic angle and movement you want, you have to manually fly the drone yourself. 5 - manual flight with the supplied joystick didn't seem that good 6 - DJI might be releasing Mavic 3 in a month and might have a good-enough AI built-in with much better image quality which is better for my needs. If I was mountingbiking in open fields or other activities, the skydio AI might have been better a choice. For photography and video work with occasional activities that I want a drone to follow me, DJI and its next iteration will probably meet my needs better.

  13. Yeah, considered selling mine as well. While it's a decent-enough mini RAW video camera (except for the file sizes of uncompressed CinemaDNG), it's a lousy performer as a stills camera - most annoyingly lacking responsiveness, with the abysmal autofocus and 0.1 seconds shutter delay. I've remorsefully gone back to my Sony A7iii for stills shooting, a much better camera in that department....

makes sense. I will try that next time. Today seems to be smoke free but if the wind comes up or changes direction i'll probably get another chance nice photo i like the reflection between the reeds, good placement ? Your pretty much guaranteed the one time you opt out of doing something is the day when you miss out. I still feel bit precious about the p4k been playing with the canon mostly to experiment and save using the p4k. Stanthorpes about 900 meters above sea level. so most of the time we are about 4 degrees cooler than most areas, i think our hottest day so far has been 36. However the job completion rate around the house has really dropped off ?

  15. Hey guys, I was at a garage sale the other day and some old lady was selling her deceased husbands lenses. I took a quick peek and found a motherload of vintage Leica, Zeiss, Minolta and a bunch of cheaper Russian lenses. Bought all of them for $300. Just ship me your camera and I’ll attach the lens for free and ship it back! Just want to spread vintage lens love around since there are so many. ?

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Its almost certain to be the case. Efficiency is vital. I have been deep in the code bunker this week, writing a special segment for the EC engine. This will greatly accelerate supporting new cameras, as it minimizes the amount of intervention necessary to conform data (with superior results). As of today, I have a new luma conform tool that is completely free of either hue or saturation distortion, and I am thrilled with it right now (not even Resolve's luma tools work this way). Now, I have to finish the second piece of the puzzle, and (accelerated) camera support will commence.

  18. IMO it's more ridiculous to carry around your laptop, with zero mounting options, just to check your camera's image. Get a cheap monitor or use the wifi app

  19. I thought I'd share this crop factor comparison tool I made, which now includes anamorphic options after reading some discussions in the anamorphic topic. It's a simple simulation made with Unity and plays in the browser. http://gobuildstuff.com/CropFactorApp/ Let me know any ways I can update it to make it more useful. I know the UI isn't great--I slapped the original app together a few years ago for fun--but if you mess around with the controls it should make sense eventually.
