Just a little end of the year lol for you guys. Have been cookin this one up for a while. I hope you guys get a laugh out of it. This is a parody of the Billie Eilish song “bad guy” except... this one is all about camera gear ?‍♂️ Let me know your thoughts! mostly shot on GH5 in 10bit on atomos ninja v. pickup shots in the garage were shot on EOS R in 4k internal. a few minor pickups on the EM1 mkii.

Too bad the shooting and footage section barely gets attention it should, even though it would be the best place to dicuss, showcase and enjoy the usage of gear. Using gear and showing the results is the best thing one could actually do with gear after all. That would be so good!

BMCC 2.5K and original pockets image quality made my jaw drop. GH2 was the mysterious affordable super cam I never came to own. GF1 for being the most beautiful camera body in poor mans digital leica land. GH5 making awesome image quality a super common thing. And most definately Davinci Resolve. Exuse my diction, it´s late over here and time to go to sleep.

Smartphone Domination They will become “cinema grade” and will be the No.1 choice for Vloggers at least. Computational DOF, crazy AF, all sorts of crazy software. Completely trackable VFX filters. Boobs and penis’s on everything. Computational Focus and DOF Already exists but will mature into an essential feature for most cameras for a very different post experience. “Fix it in post” said after every shot. Video AF Will get so insane that only the high end will use manual. Us forum geeks will still be buying $20 f***d up Helios though ? Video Essential It will become absolutely compulsory for every business and person and hamster and pig for everyday communication. Like the internet is now. Video will become the internet. And your very soul. and finally..... Cameras and gear will be so commonly incredible but so second nature in operation , getting something technically correct will be as hard as passing wind after a curry. Even your 90 year old Grandma will be able to lock focus at f0.95 and orbit round her cat’s face in 10bit 8k. The tools will be so commonly reliable that they will hardly matter. We’ll see an epidemic of terrible content with perfect focus and stability. Although this will unearth some under privileged gems, the little fishes will barely be seen in a sea of waste - unless it rises above it. As creators, we are not just fighting for quality. You will be fighting to the death for people’s time and attention. The “competition“ will be everyone and everything. Fun times.

So far Davinci Resolve Studio, and the Sony cameras I've owned since switching from Canon. A6300, Z90, and currently A7iii and FS5. Premiere Pro with all of its bugs and crashing made me hate editing, Resolve Studio has brought some of that light back. Sony gave me better lowlight, 4K, awsome 120fps/240fps, autofocus, flat picture profiles, better DR, and great reliability.

I was a bit late to the whole photo- and videography party, so at the time I was picking up my first camera, GH4 was already available. So was Resolve, Canon ML, Sony A7S, etc. None of these were considered by me as groundbreaking, since I simply didn't realize what people had to struggle with before. That's why I'll refrain from choosing anything video related, simply because I don't think I'd be objective. BUT, my nomination goes to... SanDisk Sansa Clip+ This little bugger has been with me for almost a decade, day in, day out. Hasn't failed me, yet. And you know what? Even after all these years, nothing can surpass it. People still can't find any DAP (Digital Audio Player) that could be called its rightful heir. It plays everything I throw at it. Battery lasts for over 20 hours, still. I can clip it to my belt loop or keep it in any of my pockets. Operating it doesn't require looking - almost if I was typing a text with Nokia 3310 - pure muscle memory. And the memory card I use it with (128GB microSD) cost more than the player itself. It's madness. *Yeah, I may be a millennial, but I'm not going to listen to music on my phone anytime soon. Who ever thought it'd be comfortable? And wireless earbuds? Nah, plug me (and my 3.5 mm jack) in.*

Mine has to be the Sony A7s. I have had a LOT of cameras this last decade (and a lot including old point and shoot cameras just this year). I am now on my second A7s (my first broke after years of solid daily use but I was recently given a new one by my family). After being without one for a year or so, I appreciate being able to put pretty much any lens on it and simply walk out the door and shoot it at any time of the day or night. I do not need a huge pixel count or tracking AF but being able to put the ISO on auto (currently max 25600) and not worry is wonderful...with almost every other digital camera I have had (A7, GX7, 7D, Nex3N. several Pentaxes a couple of Olympus digital ILCs, a Nikon and more as well as many P&S, i HAVE had to worry about the max ISO (A7 was almost worry free for me) and in some cases, simply not shoot at night without flash (or light for video). It isn't JUST having decent high ISO, it is the dynamic range that goes with it too. The A7s is stilly pretty good for DR at base (still equal or better to ANY M43 and most APSC and many other FF cameras but it does not drop away anywhere ear as steeply as other cameras (I have some cameras that are about the same at their base as the A7s is at ISO 12800). I am also finding that simple things like the horizon level in the EVF (that does pitch as well) is a godsend for walking around. Sure the camera has many flaws but the things it does, it does very well. Your choice?

The 18650s are usually good for around 400-500 recharges before its cycle life is over (defined as when it can only achieve 80% of its original capacity) and will still likely be good for a few thousand after that so it will be some time before you throw them away ?

Tilta do their own compact dual 18650 solution that gives out 8v. https://tilta.com/shop/18650-battery-pack/ It doesn't come with the batteries but you should be able to get 2 of those with a charger for under £20. At £60-70 total its not the cheapest solution out there as you could roll your own but at least this way you get the cable and know its officially supported and tested with the motors. Advantage of 18650s is that they aren't that much bigger than AA's depsite the extra capacity and output so you can carry a few spare to increase the run time if you needed.

art imitates life, which imitates art, does it not ? for a cinematography forum its almost a chicken or egg thingy ? i dont have an issue getting arty if it provokes creativity or moves us away from which is the best camera and why its the best. The whole youtube camera verses camera thing bores me too death. Much more interesting for me, is seeing what can be done with them. I'm interested in the orange/teal look as well So i'll be jumping on the band wagon, not so keen on doing much in post and not having a lot of coin this xmas i confined myself to half a dozen gel filters. No lights yet ? but my brother owes me money, if he comes through in the next couple of weeks, i'll getting the sirui anamorphic and some other bits and pieces.

The way I see it is that they haven't died out at all, they're either being used for over capture (360 cameras are almost good enough for that now - I've started to see people using these in "real" productions - for example check out Tiny House Nation on Netflix which used a GoPro Fusion for getting multiple camera angles and action/reaction shots in the tiny houses they're filming in and around) and 3D will also "come back" because it's a technology looking for a use and we haven't worked out what it's really for yet. Even if 3D never becomes a publishing format and stays in the over capture space, AI will really benefit from having multiple cameras with parallax of varying amounts. For example if you have a single 'normal' camera and have a time-of-flight camera / normal camera pairing to the left and another pairing to the right then you can get excellent depth, you have a second (or third) perspective for when objects are close to the camera and block one perspective, and you can also see slightly behind the subject and can use that information to change perspectives slightly, either 3D camera adjustment for offset stabilisation, for 3D effects (I've seen facebook images that use the portrait-mode of the phone to create an image with multiple planes that animate when you scroll or tilt/rotate the phone) etc. even just to see what's slightly behind the subject and you can then blur it for better bokeh simulation, the possibilities are endless. If you're going to stay current then you're going to have to separate the capture format from the publishing format. Computational photography separates these by definition by processing the input before it becomes the output.

I’m skeptical about gimbals dying out, but yes that’s might happen with steadily improving IBIS (however some companies might struggle at this, such as Sony who are trying to shoehorn a full frame sensor into an APS-C mount) however the really big change will come from integrated motion sensors into the camera to read back hyperaccurately for EIS with a sprinkle of AI magic Wonder which Chinese brand will deliver the killer blow, Kinefinity or Z Cam? False, the Nikon D90 “accidentally started” the HDSLR Revolution. And as the Canikon dulopoly watch each other like a hawk, Canon went “oh shit, we’d better add a video feature to our next release” (the 5Dmk2). If Canon gave the slightest damn about their users they’d already have put video in their Canon 50D, or even earlier. And then shortly after, a few years later, those niches died out. And are no longer in peak fashion

HD with 120 fps in 10bit and with 150mbit h265 data rate sounds nice. If you do that, I would love to grade the material you filmed with it! Just bought a S1 with the 24 - 105mm on ebay. Hopefully seller is not a fraud and will ship it to me:) Very curious to see if it lives up to the GH5´s promise. If not it will have to go back on ebay.

Some AI for enhancing or "common sense" intelligence to lessen our greed and our ignorance towards the well being of our planet. How about some planet saving algorithms to change our consumer and social behaviours. Learning other languages than English would be nice, having time for that since technology is doing all the work for us, now that would be nice. Eating tomatoes and some good bread and cheese in a clean air enviroment and filming all that beauty with a hacked GH3. Vitaly never got around to find that hidden 10bit mode unfortunately.

I don't know, steadicams are still superior to gimbals, let alone IBIS. Dolly's are superior to all of them.

I love Panasonic's Cameras. I had to choose between the Canon 7D and the Panasonic GH2, and I chose the GH2. Tried a couple of hacks and loved the video quality. I saw Andrew's famous B&W video with the ISO at 12800, and the whole thing seemed so surreal. I believe Panasonic's marketing and supply chain didn't push the GH2 enough, otherwise it would have been a lot more popular, on Indie Films, both shorts and features. I then got a GX85 and GH5. The GX85 is amazing for the size and great for travel, and the GH5 was atleast 1-2 years ahead of its time, when it released. I like the bright and portable lenses of the M43, most of all, I guess. I also use a Samsung S7 (I may buy an S11/S20, if it has a great camera) since its highly portable, and while I carry ILCs when I travel, I don't really like the idea of changing lenses or opening and removing cameras from bags, when I am travelling. Plus I tried a few softwares for upressing the 12MP photos to 48MP and they seem pretty promising. The final quality seems in between Instagram and ILC quality. I guess in 2020, if I find something that does High Res photos well (16MP+) and 6k on a smartphone, I may actually use a smartphone, for photo and video, even more. I wish Blackmagic would push RAW into a proper DSLR/Mirrorless kind of body, with way better battery, maybe IBIS and general ease of use, right out of the box. I would like to pick up something like that too.

First off, great topic! I echo all sentiments stated earlier. I also think it’s amazing how far camera quality has come with regards to our phones. I first got an iPhone 4 in 2010. It amazes me that in just a decade video quality is just insanely good and it fits in our pockets. I once shot a film in college using a mini tripod and ghetto rig for stabilization on my iPhone (iPhone holders hadn’t been made popular yet and the lens didn’t have IS). Now all the cell phones have cameras with IS and no ghetto rig needed! Amazing! My last .02 love it or hate it and technically not gear, would be YouTube. It has certainly made the idea of being a “filmmaker”, mainstream. Can we argue that “content creation” (cringe) is at an all time high and overly saturated with teal/orange (replace with lut of choice), 120fps 8bit “cinematic” content? Yes...but in that same regard, I feel like I am able to connect with way more people that are interested in this thing we call filmmaking, than when I stated getting into the hobby. Cheers to the next decade everyone! ((For the record I stated in 2014 with a d5200 and am currently on an a6500. ))

I want to play. Cameras: FS700 - still perfectly capable in 2019. A legend of a camera. GH5 - still irreplaceable and way ahead of its time on launch. BMPCC - the toddler who is really annoying but just adorable at the same time. GoPro - a rocky patch here and there, but just an amazing achievement. Lenses: Sigma ART - doesn’t need explaining. Lighting: Anything by Aputure - owning fantastic modern lights now far easier! Stabilisation: Movi - gave birth to a new way of shooting. Flowtech 75 Tripod - at last, the tripod redesigned that isn’t a clunk. Edelkrone products - very clever, exciting. DJI Inspire - ridiculous results in a small package. Big copters looking dusty. Software: FCPX - f**k the critics, as a “concept” at first, way way ahead of its time. Now matured into a modern beast and revolutionised my editing. DaVinci - will explode in the 20’s. iOS - crazy apps and camera functions give us a glimpse of the future.

I agree with those. My gear of the decade, off top of my head: Mirrorless cameras as a whole (E-mount, M43, X-Mount), we'd be really bored and stuck in last decade without those. GH1 / GH2 GH4 / GH5 Magic Lantern (Canon would be a 10-year non-event without it!) Sony A7S and A7S II Samsung NX1 The first Metabones Speed Booster was very exciting. Thanks Mr Caldwell. Sigma ART 35mm F1.4 was a breakthrough for the company and been on upward track ever since 5D Mark II / III (did a lot to popularise DSLR video) Panasonic S1H Fuji GFX 100 (totally niche - purely to show the technological progress in 10 years) Fuji X-T3 and X-H1 (great step forward for Fuji) Original BMCC (all down hill since then in my view) GX85, bargain of the decade? C-mount lenses revived for modern cameras Anamorphic makes big come back Leica SL / SL2... mmmmm yum Olympus IBIS tech...first and still the best Here are the camera companies that did the most 'good stuff' this decade... Heyho, check out this little video i shot for german based band Trebor. Shot on A7iii and Atomos. Surprisingly the material from the a7iii looks a bit different than the one from the atomos. Light was changing heavily throughout the shoot ( big windows) so it was kind of hard to keep the light consistent. Obviously, for me it's the 5D Mark III and Magic Lantern Raw. I have been using it for almost 3 years now and it is still the best camera I have ever used. Since I bought it, I have measured every new camera against it and I have yet to see an image that I prefer. Now everyone is entitled to their opinions but I am going to go against the grain here and say that the NX1 and the GH4 were ahead of their time but shouldn't have been released until 2016/2017. And before I get a ton of dislikes, hear me out... I still feel that 4K was pushed onto the consumer a couple years earlier than necessary. The camera manufacturers hadn't even perfected a 1080p image before moving onto 4K. With a multitude of Oscar nominated films and Sundance films still being shot on 2K, to this day, with an Alexa or an Amira, I just feel that those cameras were pushed out too soon to help sell some TVs. Just my opinion. With that said, I've owned an NX500 and to this day I don't know if I ever used a camera that felt better in my hand. Now if I'm speaking objectively, I'd have to say that the OG BMPCC is the camera of the decade and more specifically the fire sale during the summer of 2014 was probably the best moment of the decade. That camera was nicknamed the Baby Alexa and ushered in a wave of cost effective cinema camera features from most manufacturers. In 2019, I really like what Panasonic has done with the S1H. And for the price, the Sigma FP is almost a no brainer purchase for me next year. I'm looking forward to seeing what BM releases during this NAB and I hope the rumors for the Canon 1DXiii are accurate. I still foresee myself primarily using my 5D3 for the next couple years but I may rent a couple higher end cinema cameras next year. One thing I've realized this year is that I don't need to own every great lens or new camera that comes out on the market, but for a small fee, I can use almost every camera on the market if a project calls for it.

I own a red Isco 2x version. some say that it has barely no flares. But after several tests, I found that the flares really varies depending on what main lens you are using. for example, with a cctv 50mm toy lens and SLR rangefinder, I got a really amazing horizontal and rainbow flare.

Mine is my FS700. Had it for six years and it's never skipped a beat. No other camera I've owned has given such longevity. I feel as though 2020 is going to be an upgrade year but I just can't see any cameras at an affordable price range that are not going to be overtaken quickly. It feels as though we're on the precipice of a big leap in standard features; I imagine very soon 10-bit, 4k120, All-I, & super-sampling will establish themselves as commonplace and cameras like the C200, EVA-1 and FS5/7 will fall out of fashion.

Merry Christmas!!! I'm thinking about renting an S1H in the New Year and after looking at the specs, I was wondering... Can DCI 4K 10-Bit VFR be used in in 24hz mode? And can True 24p be used in 4K anamorphic mode?

That's one of the best features on the S1H, and I use it all the time. When shooting in V-LOG, it even shows you the reading in stops over middle gray, so you can just tag a highlight and a subject's face and your going to go!

I love it! I had to use google translate on the lyrics. The tune is very catchy, and I love the visual gag of being a a wheel in the system along with those gymnastic wheels. It's very engaging, both as a song and a video. The video clearly does a lot with very little, just a couple great performers, a gymnasium, and an eccentric collection of props. This is those projects where Sony's legendary zombie skin tones really worked for the story, they really melted into the colors of the floor. What difference did you see between the Atomos material and the native videos?

I do tend to agree with you. Why Pana discregarded PDAF for such a long period time is a mystery to me. Litterally every one eIse has it by now, even Olympus. I have made a promise to myself - I am not buying GH6 if it doesnt have PDAF, I will just say bye bye to Panasonic and move to Fuji/Sony. All next gen Pana cameras should have PDAF or I am not intrested.

watching ebay i'd have to say a $2000 iscorama is rarer than a unicorn ? maybe a year or two years ago possibly ? Barrel distortion, uneven waterfall bokeh, internal reflections, raimbow artifacts, blooming that is the anamorphic look everyone has been trying to mimic over the years. thats just like trippin without the mushrooms ? if you want hype, go visit the p4k thread, more than a million views and that was before the camera was even released ? what we have been doing is having a gentlemen's discussion on a new lens, thats the cheapest by far, that will alleviate most of the issues of buying a anamorphic projection lens and rigging it to work single focus style, that is groundbreaking gentlemen. Pretty sure tito's already said its not perfect. Does it have to be perfect ? no it does not. It just has to give us flares and an anamorphic aspect ratio 1.33 will do for starters
