Sony car at CES
Amazeballs and 3 others reacted to EthanAlexander for a topic
Sony car: super fast, super range, all the tech, only ugly paint color options. Nikon car: great tech, durable, promised features like "external batteries for extended range" never actually get released. Panasonic car: best suspension, most efficient, doesn't let you look through the windshield when using the accelerator. Canon car: super sexy, built like a tank, "dual focus" lane-keep assist, can't go faster than 10 mph. After firmware update it can go faster than 10mph but only if you never touch the steering wheel.4 points -
It is a damn pity that era of "HALF PRICE WOW" never got repeated by BMD. Wouldn't two BMPCC4K for the price of one be great! Imagine if an UMP G1 or even the OG URSA Mini 4.6K got offered at half price? Dammnnnnn Heck even now in 2020 many people would love to see a brand new BMPCC/BMMCC for US$500!3 points

Funnily enough, I was looking for bigger pieces again yesterday to resurrect it. There is scope to do some interesting stuff with it linking the aperture to it as well so you can automatically maintain the same exposure. It can then link into the ISO as well for when you run out of road in terms of the amount of ND that can be applied. The whole "PBC as a central hub" thing is designed for these sort of expansions to be incorporated so its already in there from a control point of view but is back burnered until I can find a supplier for a suitably sized piece of glass.2 points

IMO the D780 is DOA. It's a Z6 in DSLR form factor (but with no IBIS, Z-mount or ProResRAW). Still no internal N-log or 10-bit so you gotta carry an Atomos on top of it for any type of serious video work. At $2,300 this makes no sense whatsoever when you can already buy a Z6 new for $1800 or less.2 points

For me the GH4. It was such a joy to use. Solid and dependable. Battery life that meant I rarely had to crack out the spare, and frankly, could have saved money on not buying any further batteries if I had more faith! It was the features and function buttons that got me - the first camera that I could really set up the way I wanted and work with like an extension of myself. Unpopular nomination - but I've also really enjoyed using Adobe Creative Cloud. Yes, the subscription model is a pain, especially when work is scarce, but as someone who shoots, edits, and does a bit of animation, having all of those tools to hand in an instant has been fantastic. Knowing that you have apps sitting there, paid for, has spurred me on to dig deeper into motion graphics and audio. Also, thankfully, I haven't had the technical frustrations that others have experienced. Using Premiere on Windows has been a mostly pleasant ride for me (though there have been some annoyances, both minor and major, along the way).1 point

Fuji X-T3 and X-T4 discussion

Sounds a lot like us P4K/6K users. But that extra 1.5" monitor makes up for it all.1 point

I definitely think that for anyone comfortable, or even preferring, shooting with DSLRs and the accompanying workarounds/addons for audio, ND and having a fixed 3.5" monitor and no EVF then this is a gift that no one ever thought Canon would give.1 point

IBIS in video is improved over A7III? Did not know that. As for the 1DX, some of the specs are utterly impressive, especially coming from Canon. It really is a great move. However I am far from buying it because it's $6.5K. Although even at $3K I would not buy it because: - 1.5KG, thanks but no thanks - DSLR and its shortcomings especially in videos. Thanks, but no thanks. Are we in 2020? - No IBIS. Well we must be in 2012. - No AF in 4K60P FF. Literally the interesting spec for me is the 4K60p FF 10 bit which is amazing, but I shoot 90% video with AF on, so unfortunately that's a major deal breaker. - Couple of details like fixed screen If they would have released some of those specs (4K60 FF 10 bits, with DPAF) in the EOS-R body, with IBIS, I would be all over it. Now Sony can do it with the A7SIII, releasing what I have asked for years here, a FF 4K60P 10 bit camera with great AF (sorry S1H) and IBIS in a decent form factor. If they don't then f*ck it, I am gonna shoot with iPhones now on :).1 point

Sony car at CES

Well at least they can now use their very high rolling shutter design to great effect, the need to stop as to not over heat and constantly charge is a feature since it allows the user to meet new people and get connected, just not with a phone unless you pay extra for the app.1 point -
First music video with the Z6 & green screen
homestar_kevin reacted to M Carter for a topic
Thanks, it was a lot of fun though post really was a beat-down time wise. Still kinda torn about the Z6 or the Fuji X-T3 with its 60p/4K 10 bit and H265 bit rates, but my guess is I'll grab one by spring and still keep the Z6. Already having some Nikon glass made the Z attractive though, but if I keep getting music video bookings, the Fuji would really be handy for cleaner slowmo and efx shots. My next purchase will likely be the little native kit zoom in the Z mount, the 16-50 - looks like that would be a great gimbal lens with the camera set to APS-C.1 point -

Sony isn’t the one to beat. Sony have the worse video of the bunch. I think we are all giving Sony way too much credit - with their garbage 8 bit codec. They are dead last until their mythical A7s emerges from the belly of the Loch Ness monster. I think the 1DX is for serious hybrid users - which there are a lot of. I don’t think there are any other cameras that come close to compete with it, in the context of hybrid. The S1 line doesn’t have the kind of autofocus to compete on the photo or video side - nor do they shoot RAW internal. The Sony A9 doesn’t have the kind of video specs to compete on the video side. Now, if you were to look at this strictly from a video perspective and you don’t shoot fast paced action stills - then I would agree with Andrew. I’d rather get a camera with a compressed RAW format more catered toward video. Though at that point I think we are all forgetting one camera in particular that is around this price range and that is the Komodo. I know Red is a sore subject and I know I have voiced my anger with them. But, if video is really all one wants and if the Komodo specs are actually what they claim at 16 stops of dynamic range, RF mount, autofocus, cfast cards, and red raw and all in a really small body - then I believe the Komodo is going to be the one to beat at the sub 10k price range.1 point

Canon EOS 1D MKIII specs revealed
Trankilstef reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
That is a good way to put it, and I stand corrected on the price because it is actually a rip off £6500 in the UK, not £5500 https://www.wexphotovideo.com/canon-eos-1d-x-mark-iii-digital-slr-camera-body-1727870/ That is eye watering in 2020 when you can get an S1 for £1700 or S1H for £3500. So nice try Canon. Come back when you have these video specs in a mirrorless camera for $2000 to rival Panasonic and Sony.1 point -

Affordable speed booster for E Mount

Went with this one; the cheapest one I can find new that’s not coming directly from China on eBay. https://www.adorama.com/vtrnfe.html Im assuming it will work with my e series primes. I think it’s the same one I posted earlier.1 point -
*Applauds* This isn't bad, not bad at all. 5.5K RAW at 60fps - damn. And, internal? Only 5.5K at 30fps & cropped DCI 4K at 60fps with DPAF.... come on... could be worse, right? I think its a true successor to the 1DC - given all the above comes with C-Log this time.1 point

So yay, 10bit internal FINALLY for a Canon DSLR! </s> But who knows what weird and random "GOTCHA" they're going to give us with this? A massive crop factor? No DPAF in 4K 60fps 10bit? A far too low bitrate? Or the exact opposite and an overly stupidly large bitrate? Something we haven't even thought of yet that is weirdly bizarre and inexplicable, such as omitting audio recording if doing 10bit internal or only allowing it in B&W???? People should have been disappointed enough times now by Canon to stop getting excited by any new Canon launch. Wait until any new Canon product is shipping, and in the hands of independent reviewers, before starting to get excited about it. (I'm more interested in knowing what the Nikon D780 announcement will be next week) BOOM! I predicted it. No AF during 4K 60p or raw, and hefty heavy bulky files. To easy to foresee, is typical Canon behaviour! Everyone should promise to end this abusive relationship with Canon and promise never to ever return to her, never to give her a penny more. (& definitely not US$6,500 more!!) It feels like YEARS people have been saying "another six months until the a7S mk3, I'll just wait...." Kinda agree with @wolf33d , Sony is turning into the new Canon. Let's support Panasonic / BMD / Z Cam / Sigma / Kinefinity / Fuji etc instead! (we're spoiled for choice, no shortage of options to choose instead of Sony!)1 point

I understand that they dont want to give AF on the 5.4k raw. But i think not giving it on the 4k 60 mode is a bummer. They know perfectly well how to hit you with the cripple hammer. If we can get about 12.5 stops of usable DR with log, This would be a winner camera. Now the only thing remaining is the price.1 point

It's SCARY that Corporates and Not Authors, have been pushing Copyrights to a Century and beyond. Copyright should only exist for a few years (10-20) post the authors death. After that its just corporate terrorism. Also it's scary how corporates and the big artists caught for copyright theft aren't punished more severely.1 point -

The gotcha is: IT'S A DSLR! Why shoot with a DSLR in the era of Mirrorless 10bit?1 point -
Here is a little travel video of my family and I going around the East Coast of North America: https://vimeo.com/373737780 Shot with a Sony a7iii using Andrew Reid's ProColor 3.0 settings (specifically his HDR color using the HLG3 Gamma), then graded in Premiere Pro CC using basic Lumetri Color effects (curves, fine tuning with exposure/temperature, etc.). I used adapted Nikon lenses on the Sony, and it was mostly on a DJI Ronin-SC (a little bit of handheld and tripod mixed in). There are a couple quick clips from phones but they'll be obvious. I just bought Andrew's Procolor 4.0 so I'll shoot further demos with that in the near future. Enjoy!1 point
