  3. Shooting with the new Sigma 45mm F2.8 for L-mount, I realised the same thing I did when I first shot anamorphic at F5.6. Beautiful rendering matters, not just wide open, but at slower apertures. This doesn't get enough attention! Sometimes I want to see that background, and not have it completely creamed out, but neither do I want to give up the '3D' look or beautiful out of focus rendering and fall-off. What is the best rendering lens at F4? I doubt you'll find answer on Google. Let's test.

  4. XT3 is in the plans, indeed. At this moment, its down to documenting the process of adding a camera to the server, and then streamlining the Pdf writing process as best I can (later today). This will make a camera cycle as efficient as possible. From the LogC alone, V4 isn't that different from V3 for the average image. When saturation becomes more extreme, V4 is quite a bit better (much, much more accurate to Alexa). And when using V4 on unintended formats (i.e. Rec709 footage), V4 holds up, while V3 doesn't. Here is a comparison with one of the more saturated images I've got (most notable shift), using Soft (most equivalent variation between 3 & 4): V3 V4

  7. No substitute for real testing of course but there is a way to mine Flickr using exif tags that can be useful. If you use this link that I've just created https://flickr.com/search/?exif_min_aperture=4&exif_max_aperture=4&exif_min_focallen=24&exif_max_focallen=24&sort=relevance&tags=cinematic Then this will find all shots taken at f4 on 24mm lenses. If you want to change the range to include shots from f4 to f5.6 then just change exif_max_aperture to be 5.6 Ditto if you want to change the lens range to be from say 18 to 50 then just change exif_min_focallen to be 18 and exif_max_focallen to be 50 etc I've added the tag "cinematic" as whilst not being a very accurate description in many cases, it makes the search a bit more relevant as it at least shows what the creator was aiming for If you just want to search for all images that match the lens parameters then just chop off the &sort=relevance&tags=cinematic off the end.

  8. Eh, an external battery + MixPre3 + VariND is still less hassle, easier to add, and more compact than adding a gimbal to replace the lack of IBIS. (although of course a gimbal would be ultimately more powerful than IBIS)

  10. Well, since the GH2 days I've been pretty true to MFT. Skipped the GH3. Then gotten the OM-D E-M1. Then the GH4. D5300. Z CAM E1. BMPCC. G7. YI M1. GX80. G80. G9. GH5. BMPCC4K. GX9. The oddball was the D5300, but I sold it due to its traditional DSLR quirks. A bunch I sold again, some are collecting dust. Still actually have the GH2. For nostalgia's sake, I can't get rid of it. Primarily these days I use the G9 and GH5 when the objective is to shoot some schtuff. Whenever the occassion is more casual, like city trips in the company of people that might not be the most patient, the GX9 will do. The steps GH2 < GH4 < GH5 have been quite remarkable and I really don't want to get myself into fullframe systems. So I for sure hope MFT really ain't dead yet and that the GH6 will be marvelous. Maybe they'll drop the top line separation and encapsulate the G9/GH5(S)' individual strengths in a single body.

  16. blur may encompass some of what bokeh is about but thats only half of the equation. Telling the dop to blur all that background shit out and well call it a wrap, seems a bit half assed to me. No matter what field of endevours your involved in, be it law, welding, film there is an aspect of technical jargon that needs to be learned so that everyone is on the same page. It kinda frustrates me that people want to master their craft, yet can hardly put an effort into the language side of things. I'm willing to bet good money, that if you have a good director he'll be able to articulate his thoughts, present them in a manner thats sits comfortably with all. that's not an english lesson, that's art. remember double points the next time you play scrabble ?

  19. Thats a good question and apparently really hard to compare to a camera. For one, our "sensor" in the back of our eye is curved. The final image is also a composite from both eyes of a really wide angle of view around 130 degrees. Our image processor, our brain, reconstructs this to form a 3D mental image that is seemingly distortion-free and roughly (and this is approaching an apples to oranges comparison) 15-20MP of resolution and roughly 15 stops of focusing dynamic range but up to 24 stops of scene dynamic range (after our brain applies proprietary HDR processing, lol). ISO performance ranges from ISO 1-1000. Hear, cameras have us beat. https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/cameras-vs-human-eye.htm

  25. I run a channel on YouTube and I have first-hand info on some of the larger channels (1M subs) and what they can bring in. Based on data that’s publicly accessible, Potato Jet could be doing quite well financially with his current views. (I hope he is, I always enjoy his stuff.) It all depends on his fill rate and CPM for those 2.5M monthly views. If those are anything like mine, he’s probably making $10,000 to $18,000 in straight Adsense revenue. He also does brand deals, so I expect he’s clearing as much as $20k if he’s lucky. But if his fill rate and CPM are low it might be just scraping around $10k. Not much for that LA lifestyle, lol. Note that a lot of the opinion and drama channels have bigger issues with copyright strikes and demonetization and their CPM can potentially be way worse than channels that focus on brand-friendly niches like cameras or cars (Potato and myself.) So when trying to figure income for shows like Spill, Drew Goodin or Philip DeFranco you cant use the same math. Their CPM is likely to be significantly lower, but because of their size, the brand deals are more lucrative. update: I just watched the video above where Potato shows his revenue on a video (I calculated at $3CPM if 100% fill) and that is ridiculously bad with that level of engagement. Like, so bad, I don’t believe it. So either the camera category is far worse than I expected (unlikely since its a popular category) or that particular video is monetized at the bare minimum and he cherry picked it to use as an example.

  26. Attila does great work, he has an excellent grasp of the technical; highly recommended That 4K 60 sounds quite good (super-sampled 10 bit) Ironically, I've still been working away at the EC engine, and fixing copious bugs (its inevitable that when I think a thing is finished, the work has just begun ) That being said, I think today I've fully tested it, and everything is working really, really well. This is a GHa Tungsten LogC render from this morning; the wheels on the far left and right are completely theoretical extreme gamut, beyond what the camera can record - the ones in the center are actual log gamut (and V3 for comparison): V4: V3:

  28. I wasn't. That makes sense. I guess it just depends on what lenses you have on it. I have a GF3, and when paired with the 14mm f2.5 pancake it's (just..) pocketable, but you put the kit lens on it, or anything with a longer focal length or wider aperture and the size advantage disappears pretty quickly, but whatever works for you. I thought for a second there your reference of people who aren't so 'patient' might be to people in fast cars, maybe a street racing reference, illegal street racing, small camera doesn't attract attention etc... for street videos, or maybe undercover law enforcement. Or alternatively, referencing some kind of meme I'm unaware of, or humour that I wasn't getting, or..... or.... ???
    1 point
  29. As if you weren't refering back to the 'fast/slow aperture debacle'. ? But ok. The GX80 or GX9 with say the Leica 15mm f/1.7 is roughly the same footprint as an LX100. It's tiny. But... enough to take along if otherwise you'd only have your smartphone (given, the Huawei P20 Pro (especially monochrome sensor: lowlight) and P30 Pro (for its periscope optical zoom and improved video over predecessor) have really been impressive). But if I know that on the trip the goal isn't to take pictures/footage, then I'm just not taking big whoop cameras and lenses with me that literally weigh me down at the same time allow me to elaborately set up my shots carefully. Otherwise, what's the point? So... that's just where GX9 comes in. Enough to be there when you need it, but not so much as being a little bothersome to have on you.

  31. The great thing is, Speed Booster GH5S outperforms the 6K EF Pocket in low light as well. Unless you can get one of Luca's rather nice Magic Boosters. Who's for a GH5/GH5S Shooter's Guide?

  32. I've posted this before, but here's a clip I tried to push to breaking point, but it seemed pretty much unbreakable. This is the GH5 150Mbps 10-bit mode, so not even the 400Mbps All-I. When I was playing with ML raw I compared the 10-bit to the 12 and 14 bit modes, and although I could see a slight difference between the 10 and 12 if you pushed it hard, I concluded that 10 bits was enough for me. In terms of the GH5, the dual ISO is one feature that would be great to have, but the IBIS more than outweighs it, and in comparison to the S1H, the smaller size and cost more than outweigh it for me. Literally, if I became a billionaire tomorrow, the GH5 would still be the best camera available for what I do.
    1 point
  33. Considering the GH5 is currently winning, it seems that the answer to your question is "3". Or, put another way, 0.000821/day. ??? What is it about the GX9 that makes it 'faster'? I never really thought of the GH5 as slow...

  34. Good to see such loyalty round here. So many Panasonic users ? Maybe I should concentrate on more GH5 coverage. I have been more focussed on the full frame cameras since a few years ago now. GH5S and GH5 deserve more articles.

  37. Why sell us 1 adapter when they can sell us 3 I think that probably went through their heads. Hopefully AF is going to actually be reliable on the Fringer EF. I feel the Z6 has it in it to do it... somewhere... Just needs the right firmware

  39. They probably do need to go the pixel-binning route, due to the increased bitrate of 12bit A sensor typically has a slower rolling shutter scan, the higher the bit-depth. It could be that the 6K full pixel readout is done in a lower bit-depth mode such as 10bit on chip. Interesting findings, but would like to see a real-world test between Flat, My Z-LOG internal, N-LOG external and ProRes RAW Atomos have not sent me a Ninja V to try it out on yet.

  40. Pretty jacked up for this camera. The fact that fuji has turned into such a legit video brand, with no higher end video line to protect, gives me confidence in investing in them going forward. This would be my first dive into fuji, but all things point to this being a great all rounder. What lenses do fuji shooters recommend? I really wish fuji would update their older lenses to work better with autofocus, and less noisy. But I guess you could shoot them as manual focus lenses worst case.

  41. Ah didn't realise it was parfocal as well. Not bad for £200. I might try and fine the Zeiss but none on UK eBay at the moment, mostly seem to be in Japan. This is where I get my old lenses from when I'm in Berlin: https://www.shphoto.de/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=anamorphot Highly recommended I'll see if they have any in.

  42. Because you have 4K for when you need it (or you got the camera 1st for the stills performance anyway, which is a very likely scenario), but you have plenty of scenarios when you do 1080 with it. Just like heaps of people buy a Sony FS7 only to shoot it half the time in 1080

  43. Nikon fanboys: but we do better stills! And we were first for HDSLRs.... why oh why has the filmmaking community forgotten us? ? Fujifilm fanboys: You want IBIS?? Ummm errr... look over there, we've got the X-H1! It's all good, stop hassling us about IBIS, if you want it, we've got it. Oh, you want a bigger sensor? Ummm errr.... look over there, we've got the GFX 100! Now please stop hassling us, and just appreciate the pretty Fuji colors :-) Samsung fanboys: yes, we know it is 2020 (and we've technically be so called "dead" for years), but we're still THE BEST! Pentax fanboys: who? Edit, a recent update for Nikon: Nikon fanboys in 2019 (errr... and 2020, and... when is it going to arrive???): but we have RAW! (errrr.... 44. Hum, never really paid attention to focus breathing with my Leica Summicron-R 35 & 50mm f/2 E55 primes. They don't get much attention these days I feel like, but like the Contax Yashica Zeiss lenses, these were quite popular to have a set of for cinema shooters. You can get the old school Leitz ones at a steal (well, for being a Leica). Maybe something to look into. First thing that came to mind when you mentioned you'd ideally have 35/50mm f/2.

  47. This is a completely broad reply to your thoughtful one, but with the release of the 1DXiii, it is pretty amazing what is available for filmmakers from every budget... for less than $400 you can have a used BMPCC, for $799 we have the Z-Cam e2c, for $1300 the P4K (with full Resolve) or the GH5, for $1900 we have FF uncompressed raw with the Sigma, for $1999 you have the Z-Cam E2, then the P6K, the S1H, ZCam 6K and now the 1DXiii. Every filmmaker, at every budget, has an option to make a technically good film with a DSLR/DSLM or small cinema camera.

  48. The color looks more pleasing overall on the F3. I am terrible at judging color though. I was shooting on the A7III yesterday. The menus are terrible but otherwise its quite a remarkable piece of equipment. I just sold my Sony F3 to fund a Fuji XT3. They really seem to not be selling as much vs when I got it this spring.
