  1. That statement is not only ahistorical and incorrect, it’s downright disgusting.

  2. I don't think many white men feel the so called privilege. Which is why we end up with protest votes at election time. The whole political correct thing doesn't connect with ordinary people. Politics is obsessed with skin colour, not the gaffer on a film set who just happens to be born in a country where white people are a majority. Why should he feel ashamed just for being part of an industry? I don't think anybody who works in the film industry should be shamed into believing they are part of an institutionally racist conspiracy. Some of the most incredible countries in the world are monocultural. Japan is about as close to a monocultural society as it gets and where is no shame in it. In fact Japan is arguably all the more unique and special for it. Are we suggesting Japan should now be reduced to 40% to 50% native Japanese people, in order to represent a greater number of skin colours and cultures? No. Discrimination against majorities is as wrong as discrimination against minorities. This constant shaming of talented hard working creative people for being white males has gotta stop.

  3. I have used the 1.18 crop to advantage with a C mount adapter, for 2K. Using a Vario-Switar zoom 18-86 f2.5 from a Bolex 16mm camera, you can shoot 4K60p and edit in a 1080 60p timeline in Final Cut Pro well within the image circle (set "Spacial Conform" to NONE). I usually reduce the scale to about 0.84 before is see vignetting, to get the widest view. This is a H16 RX lens, but I find no focus problems from the RX adjustment for the Bolex viewfinder prism. Its very sharp at mid apertures throughout the nearly 5:1 zoom range. The version of this lens I have is one of the early ones without the electric eye & automatic aperture so it has a smaller projection coming off the side with the Bolex trigger, so it is not a problem mounting this on the X-T3.

  5. Wow. So because most white people don’t walk around feeling privileged removes the de facto privilege bestowed upon them for centuries? And the whole “political correct thing doesn’t connect with people” is just flat out condescending. So “ordinary people” can’t be allies, ie. decent human beings informed about questions regarding social issues? It’s so incredibly sad that these kind of topics on any forum always end up about the white man’s hurt feelings. As if the act of calling out racism is somehow inherently more hurtful than actual racism. “Politics is obsessed about skin color”, that’s funny because I think people in general are kind of obsessed about skin color (especially Sony’s on this forum), but it’s only now when the paler shade of skin is also named, not just taken as a neutral general thing. Then all of a sudden there’s an obsession - not when you scream the n-word or more recently make jokes about East Asians with regards to the corona virus. Nobody is trying to shame the hard working gaffer into believing anything, I think it’s more about including the hard working people of color when it comes to recognizing the industry. One doesn’t negate the other. And then the Japan example. Always the Japan example. Let’s not go to the extremely weird exotification of this “monocultural” country where everything is so special and great because of their monoculture. Because it isn’t.

  6. My problem is I never can stay with on setup. So for me flexibility is key. So for me: Nothing should be bolted down. Everything should be easily moved and setup in less than 10 minutes. Mount points everywhere. If you can mounting NATO rails in key places with magic arms on NATO clamps to hold cameras, mics, booms, lights, whatever... supwr clean space with no clutter to juggle or move around. Have a closet that is filled with your gear organized the way you want it. That being said it’s nice to have something that works and stick with it...but I prefer to ease the friction between idea to execution as much as possible. How many times have you been like, “oh this would be cool...and then the hassle of trying to setup for it ends in a “fuck it”. Probably just me 😉. I really like calebs idea. And I really enjoy those flex lights that are foldable and DIY easy stuff like using shower curtains or wax paper.

  7. Dang, I haven't really been following the development of this product because I don't own either cameras, but after skimming the manual, this is pretty effing impressive! With the lens database, and your product, the Pocket 6K has just become a lot more interesting to me. Unfortunately, I'm a ways off to a 6K upgrade, but if I get there, you can count me as a customer. Just curious, how does the calibration and your product work with zoom lenses?

  8. Okay, i downloaded the 'source' file and looked through it. IMHO the sigma stuff is a touch out of focus. If you compare to the under test you'll see the chart is sharper there. The normal studio test feels the focus is forward (his watch is in better focus) Even at f2.8 on full frame the DOF is pretty shallow. If you're not running the camera out to an external monitor critical focus is difficult. Number 9 is well out of focus as well on the chart and the suggestion is that's 8K red. Im not saying for a moment that the fp is in the same league as the others (my red is 10 times the cost) or that the scaling couldn't be better. But it isn't that bad. I've shot full frame UHD and can be obsessive about things and i have no issue with the footage in real life. Yes, the scaling could be better and hopefully it will be. But if you want pixel for pixel sharpness then use DC mode. You have the choice. I'd rather people petition sigma to push this forward - more crop choices, better scaling and so on. The sensor is there, the camera is capable but i feel sigma need to know this is what we want... Cheers Paul

  10. Hey I know this for the 4K camera but I wanted to post some 6k camera stuff and get your thoughts. First is a music video I shot last year I thought was ok and the 2nd video was a shoot I did with my DP and model and I really pushed it. It’s just a test currently my editor is editing it and I will get it colored. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/wUdkxEAJ8bU https://youtu.be/wp72zHZgInM

  12. I think the SL2 is a sleeper for video. I have been looking at more footage and its like a Panasonic S1R done right. I love a lot of what Panasonic does but sometimes their image is just...to clean, and hence suffers from that digital look SooC. The SL2 doesn't do that aggressive noise reduction and with L-log and Leica color mojo the footage looks incredible. Biggest downside is moire and the just awful AF. Blackmagic is incredibly organic looking as well. But their cameras are just..butt ugly and build quality has been hit and miss and of course no AF. The price is right, so we can't have it all, I guess. This leaves Canon. IF Canon released a capable 4K60p camera with DPAF and their wonderful (and easy) SooC goodness it would be a huge hit. I rip on Canon a lot but I would buy that camera and sell my Panny gear because of the sheer convenience and reliability of SooC goodness and best in class AF that only requires a slight massage in post production.

  13. Good job Mark in covering some of the many negatives of the a6500! However there are so many negatives with the a6500, no wonder you missed some of them: 1) a6500 is risky it will overheat, the G85 never will 2) a6500 lacks a flip out screen for if you wish to film yourself 3) a6500 lacks a mic input In my opinion the Panasonic G85 still reigns supreme as best bang for buck at its price point, like all Panasonic cameras it is a well rounded camera with few if any hidden "gotchas".

    Carl Zeiss ?

T* means multicoated, Sonnar is an asymmetrical (telephoto?) design that also means fast (f2.0 or faster), Planar references a symmetrical six-element design, Distagon means wide angle retro focus design, Biogon means wide angle angle but more symmetrical? I don't really understand lens design. They're mostly branding terms. Check this thread on RedUser: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?92044-Contax-Zeiss-Survival-Guide The Contax still lenses will all cover full fame. The cinema lenses won't, not all of them at least.

  16. From the outdoor scene it's almost impossible to judge (too much handheld, too much background blur, too much out-of-focus shooting, lack of fine textures/details). From the studio scene: It can't be 1 (because the scaling/downsampling of small details/text is too clean compared to the Sigma's odd Bayer-to-Bayer downscaling); it's unlikely 2 (because details in this image look too artificially sharp, like it was shot with a conventional codec) It can't be 3 (for the same reasons as 1) It could be 4 - because the fine details are so blurry, just as with the 4K RAW from the 6K sensor of the fp. It can't be 5 (for the same reasons as 1 & 3) It can't be 6 (see above, although there's moiré in the fine details) It can't be 7 (see above) It can't be 8 (see above) It might be 9 because fine details are blurrier and showing moiré, but still too good IMHO So either 4 or 9, more likely 4. From the overexposed studio scene: 4 looks likely, since the Sigma fp really has no log profile and no highlight roll-off to speak of when the image clips. 9 looks too good for being that overexposed... So I'd say it's 4. The weird flashing artifacts of the underexposed studio scene are an indicator of the fp as well, if this was shot with the old firmware. - If it's 4 indeed, then it confirms what we already observed; that the Sigma fp has rather poor Raw video quality for a full frame camera and is significantly worse than the rest. If it's not 4, it would be a pleasant surprise.

  17. It’s an increasingly strange world we live in. Equality doesn’t mean every conceivable variation has to be represented in equal proportions in all events at all times... Generally the equality of opportunity is so much better now - by no means perfect but far far better than even a few years ago. And, in my view, it’s equality of opportunity which is the prize of a civilised society not the equality of outcome in one random event (and let’s be honest, such awards are hardly representative of the world - and it’s problems - as a whole).

    Repairing FD lenses

Then again, if this was just an ordinary FD lens I would just bin it but some are still quite expensive (24 1.4L, 50 1.2 L, this 85 1.2L still go for as much or more than many half decent new lenses) and then there are some real exotics in longer lenses like the 300 2.8 L ETC and the there are real starts like the 200 1.8 L. The type of repair of those would depend on what it is. The problem with my 85 1.2 L is the focus throw has become quite loose most likely due to bearings "dissolving" so I do not THINK it would be all that dear as nothing to do with anything optical.

  24. Heartfelt thanks to everyone on here who backed the First Wave release of the PBC and please click the link to download some light reading ahead of your units being dispatched over the next few days. https://tinyurl.com/PBC-USER-GUIDE The fact that this single screen application with two buttons has ended up with enough functionality for a fifteen page manual is testament to how something that started out as a record start/stop controller ended up getting waaaayyy out of hand

  25. The PC industry is full of BS these days, Intel is struggling to innovate since 2015 and the graphic card market is dominated by Nvidia but Radeon is making a come back. I wrote about that in detail: https://fstoppers.com/originals/little-lies-and-big-problems-computer-industry-lack-innovation-artificial-351357 For the rest, as someone mentioned, there is not such thing as "best" CPU or GPU, etc. It depends of your use and your budget. The key is to pick the right gears for your user profile and maximize your money. Build a balanced setup and avoid bottlenecks like spending a lot of money on memory when your CPU is the limiting factor. As for Intel vs AMD, it depends of your editing app and your expectations (want to improve editing experience or focus on rendering?). The way to go is to check these benchmarks: https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-DaVinci-Resolve-187/Hardware-Recommendations https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/What-is-the-Best-CPU-for-Video-Editing-2019-1633/#DaVinciResolveStudioCPUPerformance Long story short, for Resole, AMD tends to be better than Intel but this app relies mainly on GPU. For Premiere and adobe in general, it relies mostly on CPU frequency and does a poor job with parallelism. Better have a 4-8 cores CPU for Premiere, you would mainly waste your money beyond that. FINALLY, please make sure to purchase a good power supply and have enough ventilation in your computer. I cannot stress enough the importance of installing a good power supply unit (PSU) in your PC. As a rule of thumb, do not even consider a power supply below $40. Cheaply made units have poor efficiency, they will waste energy by producing a lot of heat requiring a noisy fan to evacuate this thermal load. Finally, low-end PSUs generate bad quality voltage and amperage which will stress the precious electronic parts of the PC, in turn reducing their lifetime. In the worst case scenario, the machine may become instable and crash. Don’t be cheap and save yourself a lot of trouble by investing a little bit more on a decent PSU. Rely on established brands and spend between $50–$120 depending of the power needed.

  26. Would definitely be nice to have more assignable buttons. The 4-way d-pad and AEL button, perhaps also Tone and Colour are not programmable at the moment... Well, the AEL button is but only AE related stuff and focus magnification, that's it. I'd like also to be able to assign shutter button to take stills in Cine mode, and in stills mode assign video mode button to something else entirely. The SL2 also has a lack of func. buttons but gets around it with a very clever menu system and User profiles. I can flick through my user profiles for different video modes and LOG at a single touch of a button and wheel of a dial. ---- I am thinking of making a Review template on EOSHD so I can give an at-a-glance summary of a camera, and a review sections drop down box like DPReview reviews. Open to suggestions. The colour-coded summary table could cover as an example: Max resolution, max frame rate, sensor size (i.e. 4K/60p, FF) Max bitrate, codec options (ALL-I, Long GOP, 400Mbit) Max bit-depth (10bit) RAW video (Yes, external) Media type (SD) Low light cam? ISO 6400 maximum usable Rolling shutter: Lower than average, average, higher than average Autofocus: Phase-detect in video mode AF reliable?: Yes IBIS: Yes Menus: Bad / average / good Battery: Bad / average / good Build: Bad / average / good Character and "feel": Generic / OK / Special Colour science / skintones: Bad, modifiable to good / average / good / Alexa style good LOG: Yes/no View Assist: Yes/no LUT preview: Yes/no Rec. limit: 29 min EVF: Yes / no And so on... Would be good to have a database of cameras too, in future.
