    Fuji X-T4

The X100V was just released. It has a 4 stop nd filter built in. It seems to not work in video for some reason. But why not add this into the X-T4 and blow everyone away?

    Camera owning plans 2020

Goal is to buy nothing but lights this year. I have a great image maker already, and access to other cameras. I really just need to up my lighting skills and kit. I'll see if I can stick to it.

  3. Wow. So because most white people don’t walk around feeling privileged removes the de facto privilege bestowed upon them for centuries? And the whole “political correct thing doesn’t connect with people” is just flat out condescending. So “ordinary people” can’t be allies, ie. decent human beings informed about questions regarding social issues? It’s so incredibly sad that these kind of topics on any forum always end up about the white man’s hurt feelings. As if the act of calling out racism is somehow inherently more hurtful than actual racism. “Politics is obsessed about skin color”, that’s funny because I think people in general are kind of obsessed about skin color (especially Sony’s on this forum), but it’s only now when the paler shade of skin is also named, not just taken as a neutral general thing. Then all of a sudden there’s an obsession - not when you scream the n-word or more recently make jokes about East Asians with regards to the corona virus. Nobody is trying to shame the hard working gaffer into believing anything, I think it’s more about including the hard working people of color when it comes to recognizing the industry. One doesn’t negate the other. And then the Japan example. Always the Japan example. Let’s not go to the extremely weird exotification of this “monocultural” country where everything is so special and great because of their monoculture. Because it isn’t.

That's why I said GHx and SxH cameras. If you care about photography so much that a moderate hit in quality in extreme conditions bother you then buy a Panasonic G9 / S1R instead

  6. Maybe a chance for Canon to get back on top with the EOS R5 or R6? 10bit internal, raw internal, Canon colours, and that ND filter wheel = why bother with A7S?

  12. https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sony-says-coronavirus-outbreak-in-china-could-affect-image-sensor-and-electronics-business-enormously/ Luckily for Canon most of their product is Made in Japan or Made in Taiwan, and Olympus move all their stuff to Vietnam so wont be affected, wondering about Nikon and Panasonic will it affect them too? Since some of their stuff is made in China.

    Canon EOS R6

Interesting numbering going on... R6 = aka 6D / low-light, 20 megapixel-ish body R5 = aka 5D / higher res all-rounder So Canon is sticking to their lucky numbers, with same meaning. I await the R1 (pro sports body for speed), and R7 (high-end APS-C)

It’s funny, because every review I read of the Sigma FP, they always marked it as a negative that it “only” had an electronic shutter, for a camera clearly geared towards video. Dinosaurs roaming amongst us I suppose.

  19. Do you agree that the fp was not in focus? (like camera 9)? If we make the assumption that the fp is using the IMX410 sensor, as is the A7III, Nikon and perhaps the Panasonic then we can see that there is no way that sensor can deliver more than 12 bits in motion. Although there is a crop mode at 14 bits. If you look at the specs for all these other cameras then you can see that 12 bits in motion is pretty much a universal given - Canon say the same for their sensors too. So the container from the sensor to the camera is a fixed 12 bit bucket. If we also assume that all sensors are linear (physics and hardware wise this is the case) so the native signal off the sensor is going to be linear for all of these. Now: either the sensor response in some cases is non-linear (it's possible but i don't think it is the case) or each of these companies is doing something to get these claimed stops beyond 12. In the case of this Sony sensor, is it logarithmically compressing 14 bits down to 12? I think not, there may be a bit of non linearity in the results (there are) but i think that's a function of the sensor itself. In my testing the difference between stills and cine shows that. But i think that goes for any of these sensors. The latest BMD don't output DNGs anymore? But the old ones compressed 12 bit linear into a 10 bit container with a 1D LUT lookup table (great approach) but the source was no more than 12 bit) What other cameras currently output DNG? Because it is very easy to look inside those at the RAW data. And IMHO some of these companies are using techniques like highlight reconstruction to deliver > 12 stops. If you understand that each of the RGB filters has a different sensitivity then you can see how you can take advantage of that and extend the overall range beyond that 12 bit fixed linear container. With the fp, and being RAW, it is up to you to do that reconstruction work. With other systems that are outputting their own RAW then that work can happen automagically internally. It is true that the reconstruction work is as simple as checking a box in resolve, or as complicated as doing the math yourself. Applications like Lightroom do it whether you want it to or not - it's fundamentally part of the lightroom debayer for stills as well. So the irony is a lot of skies done through lightroom are reconstructed highlights... (ever noticed that the blues can be somewhat off?) The only time this doesn't count is when you have a cinema camera style sensor which is designed for greater bandwidth inside the sensor itself, 14, 16+ bits are common. So IMHO i think the fp has a similar range as the other (prosumer) cameras but the data you get off the sensor is 'RAWer' and it's up to you to make the best of it. This is my assumption. I have no insight into what the manufacturers are doing. I know i sound like a fanboy, i'm not really, my fp is a stop gap until Komodo ships. But i do think it's a wonderful little camera! I like what sigma are doing and they don't have any cinema camera lines to protect. I think they're really well positioned to do something quite special in this market segment and i'd hate for anyone thinking about getting an fp to not do it because of these kinds of conversations! cheers Paul

    Fuji X-T4

No need for a mechanical shutter on the S1H IMHO, very few people are getting it who care a lot about photos. Fuji is super photo centered though, I'd image they'd keep it unless they continue with a video centered XH line.

However a GHxS or SxH series from Panasonic totally should do away with the mechanical shutter and have a multi stage ND filter instead

  22. This video looks horrendous on my 4k screen with fast Ethernet and video quality set to 8k. Does anyone else see better quality or is this a YouTube quality issue? I can't imagine Qualcomm holding this up as a shining example of their tech as is.

  24. Vario Switar continued: And now for the limitations to this setup... 1) The 18mm wide view is about equivalent to a 30mm APS-C lens, or about 55mm FF 35mm equivalent, since this 18mm is not covering the entire sensor. So it's more like a "normal to telephoto" zoom. 2) Closest focus is about 5 feet. 3) The live view in the finder shows the image circle surrounded by black and is hard to judge the true edges of the (to be) cropped 1080 frame. You'd probably want to mask off the cropped image on the LCD with tape. 5) I don't actually use it mounted as in the pictures above. I put the camera on an aluminum plate that sets the camera farther back, and has an adjustable lens supporting screw that comes up under & just before the zoom ring that makes the setup much more stable and balanced. I mainly made that plate for supporting long Canon FD zoom lenses. The advantages of this setup (for 2K) over still camera zoom lenses is the constant aperture throughout the zoom, the lack of exposure stepping and focus shifting because the lens is not electronically focused & zoomed "by wire", and the nearly 5:1 zoom ratio (X-T3 kit lens is 3:1) . And for me it was a free left-over from my Bolex days. It's so cool to be able to use that lens again.

  25. time for a custom table perhaps ? there's a vblog in there i do like your idea with the camera in a drawer idea i'd mount a power adapter at the back of the desk drill a hole in the drawer to run the power cable through or mount it to the underside of desk. Then you could charge it up when you put it away. I'd also add a seal of some kind around the drawer. The last few months with the drought and dust storms, fires, have had a lot more crap in the air even in the house.

  26. I watched the download. 12bit off a 14bit sensor creates problems with dynamic range if the sensor values are stored as linear values. Blackmagic, as far as I know, encodes 12bit raw values with a logarithmic function and thus preserves more dynamic range. The Sigma fp's sensor should, by itself, have no worse dynamic range than the sensors of most other tested cameras...

  27. H265 most likely.

  28. I could be wrong but i think having more dynamic range is way better than having 6k or 8k no? I mean S1H shoots 6k but honestly i shoot in 1080p in 10bit and that suits my ssds.
