How to Buy An Anamorphic Lens - A Flowchart
matthere and 2 others reacted to Tito Ferradans for a topic
Hey y'all! After a long time playing and testing, I made a flowchart that guides you through the process of buying scopes. This is mainly aimed at beginners, but I'm hoping it can at least be fun for experienced shooters too. I'd love to hear your thoughts! http://www.tferradans.com/blog/?p=15998 Thanks!3 points -
Sounds like you all need a HipJib I suspect my overhanging fat bastard stomach would interfere with smooth operation.3 points

So no 6K... then what's the biggest new feature... IBIS? Well, if they can keep the cost of the X-T4 very close to the X-T3 and include IBIS... IMO... that's an instant win. However, I would love for Fuji to do something out of left field like ProRes... I hate h.265.2 points

Not sure if you have considered it before or not. why not produce a vblog. You write and shoot/direct and stick some local "charismatic" dude out the front. You by your own admission have a bit of kit, most of us would enjoy seeing said kit used and the look you get from it. It might open a few avenues but at the same time probably truckloads of work. Since you have 30 000 forum members you already have a captive audience, its not like you would have to blog your heart out. Depending on your workload something once a month ? just some thoughts i know it seems like, i have boundless enthusiasm infused with a large dollop of naivety, reply as you see fit2 points

A7s mki in 2020
Mako Sports reacted to noone for a topic
The A7s is still my all time favourite camera for both stills and video. I had one for around four years until it died and no way i can afford another one but my family recently got me a new one for my birthday. There is STILL no camera i would take over it in really low light (there are now some that are close and even a few that are better in the ISO 3200-12800 range but above that, no, I do not think so). The A7s has greater DR at ISO 25600 for instance than many cameras have at ISO 6400. It is NOT a camera for anyone that wants a massive pixel count and forget about AFC but it is still actually a pretty good camera even for daytime use. Its 1080 is still some of the best native 1080 (some 4k cameras downsized beat it now though) and while auto focus kinda sucks, in one respect it is better than most for AF and that is its ability to focus for AFS in stills at least in almost no light. (AF in video IS ok if your subject is moving fairly slowly in a limited area EG a rock band that is not too high energy). Auto WB sucks a bit (depending on the light). I find the colours from it to be great (closer to realistic than most) and if you want more colour choice, this is a camera that can take the Live View grading APP from Sony (costs about $10) and gives you years worth of combinations in camera. To me, it shines for low light still and video and that included sports with a manual focus 300 2.8 as I can still be shooting at high enough shutter speeds long after I would have had to put other cameras I have had away. ...I also like walking around at night with a tilt shift lens hand held. The EVF is good enough that along with the cameras high ISO, you can see through the EVF (or LCD) in light that i can not see with my eyes alone. So for ME, it is still as good as it gets but others would absolutely hate it.1 point -
The MogoCrane belt looks like it will accept any tripod with a 1/4-20 thread on the bottom, so for the price of the belt, it may be worth a try to get some small and smooth jib shots.1 point

That's the point I was making a while ago! Why should we bother with 8K, etc. if 90% of viewers will watch our work on their phones / tablets? 1080p is still king.1 point -

i'm gonna upgrade to it from my em1 mkii for that joy stick lol. i love the camera. its just a good tool that i enjoy...especially for family photos and videos. HOWEVER... i am SOOO dissapointed here. I was thinking the same thing. As it is, the tape measure pouch adds no weight to my bag, I use a carabiner to clip it to the bag's handle and if I don't want to use it, I have a monopod at my disposal as well. I figured this out because I hate carrying around tripods and since the monopod is attached to my center of gravity, it's actually less shaky than my monopod by itself.1 point

Some of the Magic Lantern Raw apps that process MLV files will also process cdng files to ProRes and they have a lot of features to repair issues with the raw files. I don't really need any of those features so I don't know if any of them will help this issue but they might. I know auto detect black levels is one of the things I tick off when I use Raw Magic... but I don't think that program processes cdng.1 point -

Thanks, Kye! It's not your traditional review but hopefully somebody more talented than me will be inspired by it and make a great film with this truly unique lens. This "review" barely scratches the story of how my life has changed since I started my film, let alone since I became interested in filmmaking. I could probably write a small book. I'm actually surprised that more filmmakers aren't interested in lenses like the regular visitors of the Lenses sub-forum are. In a digital medium, where we often discus processing, sensors and specs, manual lenses gives us a physical connection to the recording process as we manipulate the image in real time for effect. I guess they humanize the machine on some level. It's a great little lens. I look forward to seeing your Micro footage with it!!!1 point

I appreciate Andrew's insights into his use of the camera. His experiences are why I am holding back a little on the Pocket 6K and sticking to the 4K. I've no issue with the reports he gave on the problems he had with both the camera and BM. They are useful articles to read and why I come here. Some of the comments in this thread have gone beyond that though and when I see mention of BM apologists and fanboys, it almost begins to feel that users of the camera are being blamed for liking the camera. Am I an apologist or fanboy for having a good experience with both BM and the Pocket?1 point

Multi Disk Editing
Emanuel reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
Confirmed. You do not want to be directly accessing media on a big project using a slow hard drive with Premiere. You can, but it's annoying. Everything bogs down. Just reading the media a large project holds can take a half hour with a slow drive. However, here's the workaround my documentarian wife and I use: Keep our source 4K footage on a cheap/slow external hard drive, make proxies of our footage, save said proxies to a SSD, and then edit from there. You can use a 10 year old computer pretty effectively with this method. My wife typically does rough cuts sitting in her lounge chair with her old laptop. Edits fast and easy. I'll do the final drafts, coloring, and rendering on the modestly beefed up PC. None of our computer equipment is state of the art and we do just fine. Using proxies is something all editing systems do, but (believe it or not) Premier handles the process more robustly than others. Resolve, looking at you. Proxy editing just allows so much more speed during the cutting process. Just scanning the thumbnails alone makes this workflow worth it for us. Every once in awhile we do a small project with maybe a few dozen shots and I won't bother with the proxy creation. It works and is okay, but the speed of editing is diminished and a bit frustrating.1 point -

Some odd decisions by Samsung. The Ultra has some great camera hardware specs but the S20/S20+ don't have a true telephoto lens. This Telephoto camera is actually 28mm equivalent vs the 26mm equivalent from the wide angle camera. So the 3x telephoto is just a crop from the 1/1.7" sensor. This was basically done to support 8k as the "telephoto camera" has 64mp to support the 8k and cropping. The 1/1.7" wide angle camera has 12mp so 8k is not possible. The S20/S20+ are really just dual camera phones (Wide and Ultrawide). Here are the camera specs for the Ultra. Too bad this is only available with the mini-tablet sized phone. Focal length equivalents: 13mm 26mm 102mm Sensor sizes: 1/2.55“ 1/1.33“ 1/2" Apertures: F2.2 F1.8 F3.51 point

Processor and Graphics Card Selection

After a lot of research, I think I've narrowed my choice down to a Ryzen 9 3950X and a RTX 2080 Super. Puget, Linus Tech and Gamer's Nexus all rate the 3950X highly and it seems like a real value to performance sweet spot. I've got a local freelance tech who I've worked with a my day jobs for the last 5 years who will build my system for under $200 while I watch and learn. I should be able to put together a machine that will handle 6K footage (come on X-T4 or R6!) for less than 3K. I think the biggest things left are to narrow down the motherboard and pick the right DDR4 sticks. Looking forward to this box.1 point -
Truth about YouTube income
newfoundmass reacted to Dave Maze for a topic
absolutely. running a youtube channel isn’t about the channel itself. it’s about the other streams of income you make to pay for everything else. again... brand deals are where it’s at. i only make around $900 a month off ad revenue for example. the rest of my money is from all the other things like affiliate and brand deals1 point -
Well, I'm sorry if my statement rubbed you the wrong way. It wasn't my intention to offend anyone. I was merely stating, in an albeit brief and blunt way, that using "art" to excuse, or endorse, a behavior can become a slippery slope. And since we live in a world where everybody gets a trophy for showing up, I feel that certain accolades should be earned, or bestowed upon, rather than self-proclaimed. But you're right, by the definition of the word, any asshole that can put paint on a brush and slop it onto a piece of paper is technically an artist and are creating art and who am I to say it isn't.1 point
-
it’s a combination of subs, views, comments, audience engagement that led to getting an agent who lands the brand deals. that’s the majority of my income. half of it is through sponsorships. the rest is all related to ad rev and affiliate1 point

Whilst bashing BMD seems to be the main ingredient of this thread, I should counter that I've owned 2 Pocket 4Ks and they have both been free of faults, dust on sensor and any imperfections or marks on the body. I've also having met some BMD staff found them polite and open to dialogue. We have enjoyed numerous updates for the Pocket 4K. Not paid updates like Panasonic have recently introduced, but free updates that have added BRAW, new functions and recording resolutions, plus fixes that have addressed issues raised by customers. Which at least proves they do listen to customers. However they may run their Business and frankly their reviews whilst bad, show no difference to any other company I have worked for or dealt with, they did release a camera that has given internal RAW at a remarkable cheap price, along with a superb editing software for free. A software that comes with free updates. Unlike Adobe, which makes you pay a subscription to use their software. Where is the Sony camera offering 60p internal RAW, or Panasonic or even Fuji. Which DSLR or Mirrorless offers Professional functions like ProRes recording, punch in focus during recording, SSD recording, with a price tag at this point. I'm not denying there are other great cameras out there, but whilst some can speak differently, there are also many owners of the Pocket 4K and 6K, who don't have an issue with either the form factor of the camera or their communication with the company.1 point

Different people have different experiences with. So is life. I just think their arrogance might be addressed and Andrew has no saved mince words about that either. The point is he has a point. Seems they haven't fixed it yet unfortunately. Let's hope that will change. I believe this company has delivered to fulfill what RED has struggled to be. To respond Glenn @mercer, it is natural we see lots of BMD users here. This company could be born in these pages. The best accessories from third parties (@BTM_Pix stuff) have been developed in such boards. As BMD supporter from minute one, a few film projects among them features distributed worldwide and another amount of players in this industry have been using their product to follow my suggestion for some years today, I expect that from their end.1 point

My singular experience with the p4k has been positive so far, i see no reason why that will change. I assume its a modern camera, made in a modern factory with Modern techniques. After pre ordering then waiting 4-5 months i am pretty confident it took about 90 seconds to unbox which might be some kind of record. I tossed the shrink wrap but still have the box and everything else. Cant say that the box or packaging is any better or worse than any other camera i have bought japanese or not. The main thing you can derive from all of this, is mine arrived with out blemish. i should clarify that my initial statement probably came across as a little truncated. Your right i have no exp with prior bmd cameras. Yes you have all the camera experience and then some. I just picked up my p4k with the speedbooster and tokina 28-70 the support rails and tripod clamp still attached. I literally held it by the lens only and gave it a good shake nothing rattled, squeaked or moved. its solidly constructed. i have helped set up and run, quarter of a million dollars cnc stone and glass machines, yes their definitely not cameras. one point i'll reiterate is, machines need to be setup and tested before someone can sign off and say its good to go. The principle is applicable to all machines no matter what the size. The other thing i would add is i can run a cnc stone machine with tolerances of 0.1mm all day long. On a good day i can run it at 0.05mm thats stone. I would expect modern cnc injection molding machines and cnc milling machines to match or exceed those tolerances. What all that leads to is the p4k may not be waterproof, however it is as tight as a drum, well my copy is anyway. I have 3 cameras, two different brands made in japan and i agree with you, the japanese do seem to produce a nice product. I actually prefer to buy my second hand lenses from japan, the lenses are as described, probably cleaner than a hospital room, have a hand written note and sometimes a little origami thing. Thats a level of service you don't get anywhere else. getting a little late here. Glad i could make you laugh earlier, thanks for the back story some detail is always good. catch you tomorrow for round two1 point

A7s mki in 2020
mercer reacted to heart0less for a topic
I've had a chance to shoot some videos with a6000 and I was happy with its video quality, especially when I managed to nail white-balance. It had some quirks that were quite irritating (very reflective LCD screen, no mic input, weak heat management), though almost every Sony camera has them. Here is a video I shot with it in 2017: It was mostly shot in 1080p60 with shutter set to 1/80 and Portrait (-3, 0, -3). a7S still impresses me, too. These shorts aged well, IMHO:1 point -
Great write-up! I've heard bits of it before, but not the total picture. I have had a journey through film-making as well, with it being signposted with various equipment and tests, trials, and realisations. There's a huge debate over equipment and if it matters or not, and I think one element that doesn't get enough attention during these discussions is inspiration. If a piece of equipment is inspiring to use, then that can and does have a real impact on the creative process. Even if you could get an identical image out of two bits of equipment the one you like using will be the one that makes you pick it up and go shoot, and when you're shooting you'll be in a better headspace as you're looking at the images and using the equipment and enjoying the experience, and this will ripple through your directing, cinematography, and all the other creative aspects. Unfortunately sometimes the equipment that inspires us is expensive, or cumbersome, but so be it. We should all be so lucky to find a lens we love, and then have time to go shoot with it. ..and speaking of flawed but lovely vintage lenses, the Cosmicar is sitting and waiting patiently for some filter adapters - I haven't forgotten!1 point

Or get a Panasonic G85 for even less, and get 4K + IBIS We are spoiled for choice in 2020! I guess a7Smk1 still makes sense if you've got an unhealthy obsession with "the FF look" or you want obscenely outrageous high ISO performance for dirt cheap.1 point

Olympus seem to be stuck in 2016 at the moment. Still a good camera taken as a whole though. I don't think they are committed to the business, at least not to the extent of buying a new viewfinder OLED panel or ordering the latest sensor from Sony. I think Olympus may pull out of consumer market altogether in fact.0 points
