Fuji X-T4
Thomas Hill and 2 others reacted to Django for a topic
I shot Fuji for pro work during 2 years. In my experience the AF results were really dependant on two things: the glass used & the available light. I like to shoot with fast glass and that was always a problem, but more dependant on the lens design then cameras AF. I'd really like it if Fuji redesigned their fantastic 23mm F1.4, 35mm F1.4 & 56mm 1.2mm primes for video AF. Those lenses weren't made with video in mind as Fuji bodies hardly shot any video at the time those were released. If I were to enter Fuji system again today, I would probably acquire the F2 WR lenses, but I already know they aren't close to having the mojo of their faster older lenses..3 points -
The Mandalorian has reinvented how we can make films. No need to build physical sets or travel to remote locations. This is like green screen 2.0. Filming in a controlled studio, but the cameras and actors can all interact with the digital environment. Realtime keying without having to use tracking markers or anything. I'd be surprised if every studio in the world isn't already building this. We'll be seeing it in every movie and TV show within the next few years, for sure. Here's a full article https://techcrunch.com/2020/02/20/how-the-mandalorian-and-ilm-invisibly-reinvented-film-and-tv-production/2 points

Fuji X-T4
colepat and one other reacted to Brian Williams for a topic
Yeah, well your past posts have shown a bias against Fuji; I’ve owned both the A7iii as well as the X-T3 (I’ve got full-blown gear acquisition syndrome, though it’s true that I do tend to skip Canon due to their sensors always scoring lower than Sony-made sensors) and the idea that the X-T3’s AF is somehow subpar is ridiculous. No, it’s not dual pixel, as I said, but yes, it is as good as Sony’s. If you want to disagree with almost everyone here and almost every reviewer out there, I won’t stop you.2 points -
Bought a Fuji GFX 100
kye reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
A good deal on an open box one came up so I snaffled it. Before I am officially bankrupt and have to sell EOSHD to Cinema5D, at least I get to shoot some medium format 4K Here is the plan... I got a bit frustrated waiting for the X-H2, with the will-it-won't-it exist situation. I have the X-T3, X-Pro 3, X-H1, X-Pro 2, all really are too similar. Why do I have 4? I don't know. I am an addict and need help. I'll sell all those and GFX 50S, which depreciated in price like a bastard. Going to sell it for about £2800, which at least goes toward funding the GFX 100. It's a terrible time to buy a new camera. So much on the horizon. But it's all full frame or APS-C. Yes the EOS R5, 1D X III, X-H2 if we ever see one, A7S III will be on my radar and will definitely shoot with them and review them on EOSHD... But they're not medium format! Do I need another similar camera to the ones I already have? Or sell em all and get something truly special... The look is different on the GFX 100 and it is a unique in the world one of a kind camera in 2020. Ok, the amazing 4K image may trickle down to a lower priced 50R II or something like that... But before that happens I will make sure I get out quick because I do not want to end up with a GFX 100 that is worth £3k on eBay. Until then, I'll enjoy the wonder that is the GFX 100 and wait to see if the EOS R5 is all its cracked up to be. Will the 8K be any good? Will it shoot 10bit? Will it have RAW? Or are we in for a disappointment? The GFX 100 is certainty of high-end video features and 10bit with superb Fuji colours, and it's here right now. Fast apertures and full frame lenses on medium format are a real pleasure too... I love the look and it's never been seen before a mirrorless medium format camera arrived. Those swirly edges remained a mystery. And yes... I need help!1 point -

I've found the best (cheap, light, etc.) solution is the Tilta Sony F970 battery plate. I mount it on the top right side of my SmallRig cage, above grip (buttons are still accessible). I use 6600mah "Powerextra multifunctional" batteries that are $20 each on eBay. I bought four and I don't think I ever used a third on a shoot. These particular batteries are useful because they have a USB-out and DC-out, which can power a monitor. I also got great audio straight into the phantom powered mini-XLR and 3.5mm audio jacks. Curtis Judd has a video on it. I've used wireless receivers, shotgun mics, etc. all with clean results. Make sure your settings are right and you feed it a hot signal (the new Rode NTG5 is great: light weight and hot). That is a major plus, to not have to mess with a separate recorder or mixer. If you have a relatively simple shoot, you can keep the package compact, light, and cheap.1 point -

I recently enquired to some Make Up Artist Youtubers to feature in a small brand campaign. All of them had agents. On the lower end at around 100k subscribers , they were on average around £18k to hire for just a 4 hour shoot. On the higher end at around 18 million subscribers, average £100,000 for the same. On top of that, you’re limited to £1k worth of ad spend per campaign and only usage of the video for a month. Never knew YouTubing was that lucrative, and stringent.1 point -

I didn't know about them shooting Walking Dead on S16 but, since you mention it, I wonder if they shot the first 3 season's of Fear the same way. Fear started out a little slow but by season 3 was getting good and looked as good as TWD. Then they changed showrunners, the writers and at least half of the cast in season 4. They added more recognizable names to the cast which probably hurt the production budget and might have played a part in a camera switch because the look of the show changed and over time they implemented a really washed-out not very filmic looking grade. The worst part is that the writing really took a nose-dive that season and hadn't recovered by the first few episodes of season 5 which was when I quit watching. The sad part (for me) is that I like Lennie James, Garret Dillahunt and Maggie Grace but the stories went from being pretty much on par with the original show to more of a Z Nation level.1 point -

kaylee reacted to barefoot_dp for a topic
I think it will find it's way into a lot more applications than just big budget films. I'd imagine in a decade or so instead of booking a cyc wall studio, you'll be able to book a similar though scaled-down setup like this. You'll be able to select from a couple dozen pre-loaded environments or load your own if you've got the budget to create the virtual set (and eventually there will be a market for the sets). Perhaps not quite self-funded short-film budget level, but much cheaper than flying a crew to 3 different locations for a commercial.1 point -

I've been using the Camdo BlinkX with GoPros for a timelapse that has been going on for over a year. They also sell a waterproof enclosure for it. Not a cheap solution but it's been working great. https://cam-do.com/products/blinkx-time-lapse-camera-controller-for-gopro-hero5-6-7-8-cameras It's connected to a voltaic battery and solar panel. With a large memory card I only have to check it every other week. It's taking one image every minute, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. You can schedule it to shoot video too. Ted1 point

Could just be a stylistic thing. Film forces you into a certain look pretty much, where as digital you have a lot more freedom to ruin the image lol. I believe that a very talented colorist could match digital to film and you'd not know the difference.1 point -

This is so cool. There's been lip service paid to a return to practical effects with a lot of recent features, and I think that's a step in the right direction, but imo this kind of thing achieves the same goal and it's forward-thinking and not just nostalgic. When you film with the background there practically, the specular highlights, fill light, etc. look appropriate even if you're massaging the background plate in post. Not the case with green screen where it can "feel" fake even with really high end material. And the shots are composed in real time (rather than on green screen with consideration for how you'll compose in post)–what you lose in flexibility you more than gain in terms of the shot being there. Obvious this tech isn't for everything and has its limitations, but it's super exciting to me.1 point -

It love the Z6 and the output but I’ve always had a soft spot for Fujifilm and sort of waited for them to release a camera like this (IBIS, internal 10-bit, 4k60). There’s also something about the lcd and viewfinder lag when in video mode with the Z6 that annoys me and that I never really could get over. For stills though the Z6 is great and I might have to rebuy it when they finally release their compact primes1 point -

Video Hummus reacted to sgreszcz for a topic
I am selling my GH5+PL12-60, it is actually a little large/heavy and probably too much camera for my needs. I bought an Em5iii when it came out, (it is much better value after the price just dropped to $999). I just shot some outdoor activities in the pouring UK rain and mud with the Em5iii an Rode videomicro. The interviews were done with two little waterproof Instamics. The IBIS with the Olympus 12-100/4 dual-IS is incredible. You can do much larger movements and walk with smoother results than with the GH5+PL12-60 dual-IS combo. With the x2 teleconverter I can get stabilised 4k from 24-400/f4 FF equivalent. I don't really need my Osmo Pocket anymore, except if I want to do boom-type shots with a selfie stick. The PDAF autofocus works great, especially with the face detect in interview situations. I'm getting a little lazy relying on it as it also works great for reveal "slider" shots and touch rack-focusing. The C-AF was the only reason I got the Em5iii over the Em10iii, but I could have got two for less than the price of the Em5iii! I like the Oly image, but still tweaking a bit to get the best out-of-camera colours (just using natural, -2 sharpening) and exposure without having to do much grading in post. No zebras, so relying on the histogram which is much nicer than on the Panasonics (stretches across the bottom). The EVF isn't as good as the GH5, and the mic input gets in the way of the flippy screen. The GH5 4k 10-bit picture looks better, but youtube and social media where I do my local/community event films have crappy quality, so it doesn't really matter. I do wish the Em5iii had the constant face-detection box during recording like with the newer Em1iii - just to give 100% confidence that the C-AF is doing it's thing. The only missing thing to make the Olympus the perfect camera for me would be built-in NDs. F4 and ISO 200 and no ND at 1/48 shutter is OK in the UK winter, but I use fixed NDs for the sunny weather (tired of fixing vari-ND colour messes in post). I carry the camera around much more than I did with the GH5 so have more opportunity to shoot stuff. I'm also really downsizing my overall kit as I only do small local events and documentary paid jobs on the side. My Voightlander 17mm and 42mm are going too to raise some cash. I'm keeping my GX80s for time-lapse cameras as they aren't worth much on the used market (working on a long-term time-lapse waterproof setup). When I see stuff like this, I know it's me lacking as a filmmaker, and not the camera that I'm using:1 point -

I still don't shoot much video on a smartphone. I don't know why but it's almost 100% a stills cam for me, and a very good one too. I find it very clever though how we are now able to get clean video off a 100MP chip or a 40MP. The sampling has got a lot more intelligent since the days of line skipping. Pixel mix / binning is now not so much the sin it once was, and with Quad Bayer it is actually turning into a nicely oversampled positive with big chunky pixels. Stills Mi 10 is 25MP output from the 108MP sensor. Mate 30 Pro is 10MP from 40MP... You can have it output the full 40MP RAW DNG. Is that possible with the Xiaomi? Comparison shots from DXOMark below only show the Mate 30 Pro in 10MP mode. However it is a very good 10MP mode that looks more like a normal camera at around 16MP. The Mi 10 25MP looks a bit lower when you pixel peep it - maybe 18MP. So the difference is there but not as massive as 40MP vs 108MP suggests at 1:1. I scaled the Mate 30 Pro up to 25MP and did a 1:1 crop compared to same crop on the Mi 10... Mate 30 Pro Mi 10 Pro The plants behind them look a bit more natural on the Mi 10 Pro but the difference in clothing texture shows actually an advantage to the Mate 30 Pro, weirdly. So either it is a soft glowing lens on there, or too much noise reduction?! Or just a bit off on the focus? As for the RAW... I find the JPEGs are often cleaner and more detailed with better dynamic range on smartphones, due to the composite, multi-shot, multi-lens, neural network upscaling, etc. nature of the beasts. But the RAWs do give you some low-fi natural look back and more fine grained noise, less sharpening and less NR. Raw sensor data at 1:1 from 108MP with 0.8 pixel pitch is always going to be quite noisy and soft... Although big leaps have happened in last few years! Can you edit such a large file on the phone? I can with the P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro at 40MP but 108MP would be majorly pushing it! The big key to all this is the multiple sensors and lenses, composite images and computational imaging. The cameras should be seen as a system of cameras rather than one.1 point -

While I agree nobody forces anyone to upgrade.. there is a very real difference in between XH1 & XT3. XH1 has IBIS, XT3 has 10-bit. Depending on usage, either one could be essential. Personally, I wanted both features plus extra battery life. So I'm glad I skipped XH1/XT3 and will probably grab an XT4 ASAP! Not holding my breath for XH2 though..1 point -

Truth about YouTube income
Trankilstef reacted to Video Hummus for a topic
Well I’ve never been motivated to change or do something in my life because someone waived a 1DX in front of my face or did some stupid sketch about their Tesla Remote driving to bringing them their new C500Mk2. I’m not jealous at all. If you have the money and want toys that’s fine. All power to you. But in the end it’s really just hollow and empty. This is coming from someone that wants to start a YouTube channel for fun and maybe a bit of profit. But I’m not going to waste my time peddling shit to any potential viewers. I won’t make the mistake of having the income from YouTube dictate what type of content I produce and when. That’s the trap. Eventually, you have to do this shit your YouTube punishes you for it. That’s why all these channels just start to converge into one big monolithic corporate sponsored blob. Im really, really sick of the stealth sponsored brand peddling and extreme GAS that these people present to you. If you don’t agree with me then do an experiment. Take these (Real) titles for example..emphasis theirs. Is the BMPCC 6K still worth it? All you NEED is FPV. Why I Invested In a NEW $16,000 Camera How to use a wide angle lens effectively. Hiking the Mardi Himal trek in Nepal. Why I switched from Canon to Sony... Whats in my camera bag 2020... HOW TO CREATE CINEMATIC B ROOL New C500 Vs EOS R... And that was two full scrolls down YouTube for me. Almost all of those titles are geared focused. Don’t watch for 1 month. In that month, instead, go out and use your gear to create something. Doesn’t have to be some spectacular epic...just create. I will guarantee you will become more inspired and more creative doing it then watching this crap. I bet you will even come to appreciate the kit you are using. I bet you will be happier and more joyful. Having said all of that. I like YouTube. I’ve learned SO MUCH in a very short amount of time on about any topic. This is the power of the internet, but it’s also the internet’s extreme weakness for promoting and sharing toxic thoughts and behaviors to an audience of billions—mostly kids. Part of the reason, I think, that Peter McKinnon does so well is that he, as a magician / magician enthusiast, understands the power of illusion and presentation. Because not only is he getting paid to present you with some product but he is also selling you a certain image. And it seems this is everything in the successful YouTube personality space. @Andrew Reid, I think your cheap camera challenge would translate well to YouTube channel to promote not only people actually using their gear and enjoying the process but to bring people here as well. If that is a goal of course. Maybe you don’t want that.1 point -
