  1. Glenn, I think that can even bump exactly what you're saying... I just think this can help to also make it happen, isn't it? : ) I always feel this forum has much valuable information, it is a very rich resources variety of knowledge which invariably stays in the vault forgotten and hidden. At times, we don't necessarily need new or different but to preserve the already existent. Andrew can't stick everyone but this can serve as archive for the best of our choice. We're obviously free to keep going to spread and add more material to the different topics, of course. Last but not least, I really do appreciate index stuff, see them as very helpful tools. Information is key (E : -)

  3. Congrats on the purchase (what a deal you got, wow!). I also think that Minolta Rokkor MC 58/1.4 is one of the most underrated gems, especially when converted to EF mount - a very versatile option with great character. Managed to grab many good shots with it. Though I must admit that I sold my copy a couple of weeks ago, since I no longer needed 58 mm focal length and nifty fifties are much smaller and lighter than this hefty piece of craftsmanship. Right now my 50 mm lens of choice is Pentax M 50/1.7.

  6. I recently won a Minolta MC 58mm 1.4 lens that was converted to EF mount with a Leitax adapter... for less than the cost of the adapter if I were to buy it new. As you guys probably already know, Minolta lenses do not easily adapt to EF cameras due to the difference in flange distance, but there are two lenses that will with either the Leitax or EdMika adapters... the 58mm 1.4 and the legendary "bokeh king" dream lens... the 58mm 1.2. There are other ways to adapt Minolta lenses if you're handy or want to pay someone to do it for you. In fact, I posted some frames from an adapted 35mm 1.8 a couple years ago... Unfortunately, that lens will only focus to 4 feet. It seems like there is something inside the lens that is binding it up, but I haven't been able to easily open the lens to inspect it. I was able to get a partial refund so it was worth keeping the lens. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon the 58mm 1.4 on eBay and ecstatic when I won the auction. On my last shooting day, I was able to take the 58mm 1.4 out for a spin. First let me say that they just don't build lenses like they used to. These old Minolta lenses are a pure joy to use. The focus ring is silky smooth... I wish there was a better adjective to describe it, but other than Takumar lenses, it's one of the smoothest focus rings I've ever used with the perfect amount of dampening. The lens is also sharper than I expected it to be... when stopped down. Wide open the lens lacks contrast, but stopped down to f/2, the image starts to come alive... contrast gets a bump and it sharpens up nicely. Here are a few frames from my test... I wish I was a better colorist to take advantage of the saturation capable with these lenses. The color separation is gorgeous, but I don't trust my eyes or my screen to really push it. Overall I found the lens to be well worth what I paid for it, but not as good as the 35mm 1.8... which is one of my favorite lenses of all time. I hear the old 55mm 1.7 kit lens is a sharper lens and since I have a mint copy in my lens collection, just collecting dust, I think I'm going to try and adapt it myself, so I can do a comparison. But as is, this 58mm 1.4 is a beautiful lens that is older than me and has stood the test of time better than I have. For 33 bucks... how could I possibly complain?! For you mirrorless users, the good news is that these beautiful and cheap Minolta lenses can be adapted with a cheap, dumb adapter. But with a little ingenuity and patience, even EF users can experience shooting with legendary Minolta glass. For a further, more in depth, discussion of Minolta lenses, I highly recommend the Rokkor Survival Guide over at the RedUser forum... https://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?92246-Minolta-Rokkor-Survival-Guide If I can get the 35mm 1.8 to focus to infinity, I'll have a beautiful, two lens set for less than $150. What more can I ask for?

    Panasonic GH6

Yosuke Yamane has said there won’t be 8K soon from Panasonic, wether that means this year or not until after the Olympics. I believe the only contenders for 4:3 STARVIS sensors that @androidlad has hinted at is a ~42 MP sensor and a ~54 MP (quad-bayer design?). With the Covid-19 heavily affecting production of parts and supply in most manufacturing sectors, I feel like we will get an announcement but may have a much later launch. When you look at the GH5 today, a 2017 camera, I find it absolutely amazing it’s still a top tier camera. 5K open gate, 6K anamorphic, 4K60p, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal, unlimited recording, waveforms, great audio, dual UHS-II slots, 400Mbit All-I, built-in time-lapse, and the list goes on! Even a fucking stop motion mode! Hopefully Panasonic continues the legacy and truly gives us something special. I love MFT and as you can see, it makes trades offs that give us all of the above I listed in a weather sealed, relatively compact, workhorse of a camera. Meanwhile Sony users are STILL waiting for 10-bit in a A7 body...

  8. Just did a test comparing the XT3 RAW image files to the internal H254 4k files. I set sharpening on -4 and NR on -4. The RAW files were converted to JPEG in Lightroom with sharpening and NR off. I was looking at comparisons between the Pocket 4k and the Fuji and was surprised how much sharper the Fuji looked. The test was really to see if there was any internal sharpening going on inside the camera with sharpening at -4. The RAW image is lower contrast for some reason, both shot in eterna. Pictures zoomed 250% Top RAW bottom 4k H264

  11. Nice shots... I should make it a rule on my posts that you can only post your own samples if they're worse than mine. Haha. Seriously though... it's a cool little lens and I would have paid double or triple for it an I would have been happy. Pentax-M lenses are amazing. Along with the Nikon 50mm Series E, the Pentax-M 50mm 1.7 was the first good lens I ever bought. I still have it in my closet somewhere. I should give that a test the next time I go out.

  12. you and your minolta's and andrew and his cooke lenses are playing the devils advocate with my wallet. Actually any lens thread is a bit of a danger. 🙄 My eyes lit up when you mentioned 58mm f1.2 so i ebayed it their probably about the same as canon fd 1.2 or even pricier perhaps. It seems any vintage, fast lens or wide / faster than standard lens gets expensive fast once you stray from the nominal 50 mm type lens. I upgraded my internet plan about a month ago which has meant alot of youtubes on various lenses, which kind of lead to an... indiscretion with a russian lens. I'm kind of interested in finding either a pentax 17mm f4 or the 35mm f2 next that will kinda round out the collection of pentax m42's i have then. Some are smc some are just super taks. I don't think i have defined a look that i like yet. Something i'll have to spend some time on shortly. I'm not fixated on pentax (well i don't think i am ), but it seems to me they have just been the easiest to adapt from m42 to ef for the canon, then the p4k came along which led to the speedbooster onto m4/3 mount. Once i got to six, i thought i should just get the whole set 😁 On the whole most video reviews seem like the m42's so i feel i haven't done too bad by purchasing them as i could afford it.

  13. HA! I've been there too. Bought something then completely forgotten you'd bought it. Happens far more often than I'd care to admit. Gets even worse when you buy it a SECOND TIME, because you want it, and thought you didn't have it.....

  14. If you took out all of the libellous remarks, the conversation would pretty much have just ended up with "does this come with rice?" and "can we have the bill please". If its any consolation, there is a thread on here somewhere where someone asks if anyone owns the 35-70mm and I replied saying that I regretted not buying it as I'd gone for the wider range of the 28-85mm instead. However, I made that statement a good six months after I'd actually, erm, bought the 35-70mm and clearly completely forgetting I'd done so ! Not that I have an addiction or anything. I'm not so sure about that. If dour cynicism ever becomes a key driver of the YouTube algorithm then we might have a chance.

    Fuji X-T4

The X-T4 still misses out on a lot of key advantages of the GH5 which I feel are important: Proper headphone jack (no need for a USB adapter!) Seems like better weather sealing (proper weather sealing vs "drip proof") Waveform monitoring Full Size HDMI Option of using the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 XLR Microphone Adapter

Man.. as an ex GH5 user, I'd go with the XT4 every time, unless I'm using anamorphics. Bigger sensor, better color, better autofocus.

What? No way, I'll take my GH5 for video over this everytime. I use anamorphic and 6k all the time. I don't see how this is an upgrade from my GH5. Though, I do have an X-T2 for stills, now maybe for that...

  18. Hey, you are free to post whatever you want... obviously. I do. But instead of the "favorite" threads... why not advance the conversation in these specific threads? It could bump the threads and perhaps push the conversation in a different direction. Just a thought... carry on.

    Fuji X-T4

Is the X-T4 the basically an GH5 with larger sensor, but 3 years later? I was expecting a bit more, and the Vlogging screen dumbs down what was quite a pro photographic feeling camera line. The X-H2 is the one I will be getting, if it ever arrives. It's a design that much less hipster, far more practical. 1080/240p is a first and great to have, so well done Fuji there. It lacks the 6K headline feature that nobody actually needs! Bad marketing, but who cares. Autofocus seems to be steadily improving, but it'll vary depending on the lens. The fast Fuji X-mount primes are not made for fast phase-detect AF. I feel that Fuji long term is onto a winner with GFX 100 video specs in a $2500 medium format sensor size cam, which will get enthusiasts excited while the mainstream goes for X-T series. It's a decent update, that's for sure, but price is creeping up to full frame land now and times are a-changin! I see a far stronger long-term future for the GFX range than I do the X-T.

  20. You don't know the half of it. We had a great time and can recommend an excellent Thai restaurant but as for any meaningful comparison testing you'll all just have to rent the cameras yourselves. Although the working title for our next series of misadventures should definitely be Planes, Trains and No Autofocus. With regard to the GFX100 itself though....yeah, wow.

  21. So, here are some keepers from my trip to Edinburgh and Gdańsk. All in all, I think it's a pretty good lens. Even though my copy seems a little bit decentered (left side of the image is visibly worse than right), it doesn't disturb me that much. It allows me to get a whole different perspective and I like it.

I have, it has great rendering and very little distortion, also the manual focus ring is better than the 17-35 or 16-35. Unfortunately it has a horrendous minimum focus distance that was bad enough that it did effect it's use for video and photography. Some more of the F3, Internal S-log with Nikon 24-70 F2.8 G

    MFT to X-mount?

It is super super early days for the Nikon Z DX system. But yeah, is a pity the Nikon Z50 lacked IBIS or raw output, then it could have been a mini Z6 powerhouse! Perhaps the "Nikon Z60"?

    MFT to X-mount?

Yeah, I'm really hoping for a baller GH6. Hopefully they ditch the idea of separating the flagships into G/GH/GH_S and just go back to the single GH already. Give it the G9 style body with huge EVF and top LCD. Put in an APS-C sensor like JVC did which enables some cool tricks like digital lossless zoom, different crops etc. Like Olympus did, don't go with contrast based AF, just do phase detect already. And then I want to see some Blackmagic features, like ProRes recording internally! If MFT cameras really are a dying breed with little to no effort going into it from the manufacturers (shame for MFT-mount specific products such as Vazen anamorphics and DZOFILM cinezooms)... boy... I'm so heavily invested into MFT/married to it, it would be a challenge to change systems now. I do not wish to get into fullframe. It's never been about the bodies, that's how we interact with what we're doing, needs to be ergonomic and solid, have all the ports and features we require. For me it's always been about lens size (and price: bigger is usually more expensive, unless you go full pro with the smaller systems, but even then I'll show you some FF options that are way more costly). The option to keeps things relatively compact... or have lenses that do quite the range with a small footprint is priceless. And of course, nobody's keeping one from still using FF lenses if needed to. I'd take S35/APS-C too. I think 4/3" sensor performance is catching up, but S35/APS-C just hits the sweetspot. But I don't care for Sony's approach with APS-C E-mount. Might as well just get a FF Sony since their APS-C line-up doesn't have much going for it. Canon EOS-M... maybe if you're a soccer mom or a brainwashed YouTube vlogger. Nikon Z APS-C, not hitting its full potential unfortunately. Fujifilm's where it's at and it's good to see the progress they've made. They were similar to Olympus, one of the classics and highly stills focused. But they've started to embrace video more and more. Not quite fully Panasonic yet. But it's getting there. Soon enough they will be the path to follow for those who come from MFT should Panasonic not step up for us. In transitioning I agree it would be great if it were possible to keep using our existing MFT arsenal. E.g. my Veydras... all MFT mount. Sirui anamorphic just got confirmed to be shipping... MFT mount. Voigtländer... etc... you've guessed it! So thumbs up for whoever can make it happen.

  33. I had a look at them on the back of the camera on the train and at least one of the shots is in focus which is one more than I was expecting. Curious about the false colour on the P6K though because I set the exposure quite conservatively but a few of them look horribly overexposed. The most impactful thing during any of the tests though has to be that Contax Zeiss 35-70mm when it went on the GFX100. Mojo is a pretty nebulous term but I'm quite prepared to use it in this instance.

  34. I don't think the C300 crowd would really demand RAW or 6K (cumbersome workflow, storage requirements), those would be more for narrative, creative projects. That crowd would prefer efficient codecs to accommodate news gathering, live events, reality/docs, etc. I also think that's why IBIS would be key for them. Goodbye easy rigs! And the full frame would be important for light-gathering in uncontrolled environments and flexibility for focal lengths in tight locations.

  39. Come on bros. Deep down, you know the Canon R5 is more like this: I will be honest here, the only "rumor" that I was excited about in the R5 is the 4K/120 - that wasn't mentioned in the announcement, and there is a possibility that the cripple hammer will land on the rumor itself.... so it is what it is... lets have a good laugh and move on.

    MFT to X-mount?

Or Fuji's own excellent cinema zooms (18-55mm T2.9 and 50-135mm T2.9), which if you buy in X Mount you're locked into only X Mount. But if you purchase it as MFT then you'll be able to use it on ANYTHING! (which is S35 mirrorless... if the adapters come out, such as a MFT to X mount adapter. FZ and E mount adapters already exist for the Fuji MFT cine zooms)
