    Fuji X-T4

I think the main problem coming from these videos is that 90% are made from photographers that have limited understanding of video work. They think IBIS is a gimbal replacement or some sort of steady cam. It is not. If you add to the fact a lot of the footage displaying wobble artefacts are probably using the new EIS feature, well that just adds to the misjudgment of the IBIS. From the few footage that uses the IBIS correctly, it seems to me that it works really well. Nothing to worry about. Same thing for AF, even Canons dual pixel AF isn't flawless and won't replace a follow focus. There is actually technique to maximise a camera's AF sticky rate. Lens choice, lighting can also alter performance. That's not to say these pre-production cameras don't have issues, but until they ship these videos are just what they are: an early hands-on approach.

The whole 5 pages of this topic is why pre-production models and firmware makes zero sense to me. How am I supposed to get anything from these videos if everything they show is subject to change? How am I supposed to know if the jerky warpy IBIS is just pre-prod firmware or will be there in the camera I can ACTUALLY buy? How can I make a decision about the autofocus performance when everyone says "oh it's just pre-prod firmware it will be improved"? All I can get from these videos is that the camera looks nice, but I could also take it from reading a spec sheet and looking at the images online. Everything else isn't representative of what I'll find in the store. I just want a GH5 with proper autofocus.

I think you're going to be looking at about 11 to 12 stops with F-Log--and 10 bit 422. Fuji now includes an internal LUT for LOG shooting--it's going to make exposing F-Log much better, and make peaking more useful. Personally, I'd shoot Eterna for video except in some extreme situation. The X-T4 looks like state of the art for APS-C cameras---best in class. I LOVED shooting the X-H1--such a wonderful experience--Nikon Z6 too. Both awesome.

Yosuke Yamane has said there won’t be 8K soon from Panasonic, wether that means this year or not until after the Olympics. I believe the only contenders for 4:3 STARVIS sensors that @androidlad has hinted at is a ~42 MP sensor and a ~54 MP (quad-bayer design?). With the Covid-19 heavily affecting production of parts and supply in most manufacturing sectors, I feel like we will get an announcement but may have a much later launch. When you look at the GH5 today, a 2017 camera, I find it absolutely amazing it’s still a top tier camera. 5K open gate, 6K anamorphic, 4K60p, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal, unlimited recording, waveforms, great audio, dual UHS-II slots, 400Mbit All-I, built-in time-lapse, and the list goes on! Even a fucking stop motion mode! Hopefully Panasonic continues the legacy and truly gives us something special. I love MFT and as you can see, it makes trades offs that give us all of the above I listed in a weather sealed, relatively compact, workhorse of a camera. Meanwhile Sony users are STILL waiting for 10-bit in a A7 body...

  7. Here's the footage I shot (and threw a load of film emulation effects on top of). It's not edited into anything interesting it's just 20min of stuff ... so skim through and find the bits you like. Some other nice stuff posted here folks - nice to see! The main tips I'd give are: 1. Be aware of the horrific aliasing - tree branches against a bright sky look just horrific. I've added a strongwomen Tiffen Digital Diffusion or HDTVFX filter to the front of the already soft 6mm lens, which suits the consumer 8mm look I'm going for and deals with most of the aliasing. Adding grain in post helps diffuse it too. 2. Rolling shutter. It's awful. Put the strap on the camera and pull it taught around your neck (or use a loupe) to avoid jitters. A pistol grip handle helps too as the EOSM is not an easy camera to hold steady. Then stabilise the footage and correct the rolling shutter in post as best you can (I use Lock & Load). Here's the vid. I'm pretty pleased with it as a Super 8 simulation. Pw: S8mm

  9. The videography industry is like any other line of work. You can work for someone else for an average / low salary, or work for yourself. If you work for yourself and you want to make money, you need to be "good" at business. Meaning you either need to be good at business yourself, be very lucky, or have someone who is either good or lucky to help and support you. If have none of this, good luck. You won't make much doing anything, much less videography. The better at business you are, the more you will make! Find your niche and go from there. I'm working my way up doing more and more corporate work. Just remember if you are freelancing you have lots of expenses you need to pay, so you can can't just charge $50/hr per project if you want to make money long term... Compensation ranges from $50 - $200 per hour per project. Not really worth it if you are making less than $100/hr, you have to pay for insurance, gas, gear, being stuck in traffic, sometimes assistants, computer gear, music licensing, software etc... All "hidden" costs you don't deal with when employed by others. Not to mention the work isn't steady and you have to find and make your own work. Of course this also depends on the level of your work and market. If you live in a smaller market and people only pay $200 for crappy videos... You will never make any money there. Freelancing is tough and you need to make a lot more to compete with the benefits from a salaried position (health insurance, PTO, vacation, steady income, steady income if you want to get a loan or mortgage etc etc) Currency above is Canadian pesos and not American gold (us worth 1.3x more). You need to find something that works for you. If you are a social media star go for it, but I am not one, so I had to find a more old school way, just growing organically (long personal challenging circumstances). Again like any other freelancing business, word of mouth is key! There are lots of ways to make money in this, I just prefer corporate because you can find good clients that won't stiff you on the bill and actually have some budget to make things look nice while not being full on Hollywood or advertising. I don't have experience working for a media company because tbh you won't make much, and from what I can tell the film industry side can be a bit toxic but ymmv. I spent most of my working life in an office so I'm more comfy with that culture. Pricing you learn from experience. There are some great yt videos on this and I'm glad others have talked about it. At first you take what you can get, then you realize you're not making any money, and you will need to figure out how to value yourself. Eventually think about your business like a business. If you hire a camera op at $30/hr can you charge a client $30/hr? Of course not, you're not making anything... You have to charge $60/hr for that expense... But start from step one. Do have a portfolio, is it any good etc. If you can't make it working for yourself there is no shame in working for someone else, it's just that it's hard finding a good (subjective) paying salaried job in this field. If I couldn't work for myself in this field, I would 100% do something else as unless you are in film and union your hourly is going to suck. Do not compete with Craigslist rates unless you want to be paid bottom dollar and never make any money. That's just my experience and opinion, I'm sure it does not apply across the board. Also dependant on living costs in your area and what you want out of life. Good luck!

This is the problem we have with Slog2, VLOG etc. The internet says it's crap but they don't know how to use it properly. Very compelled by the X-T4 to use as a general all round purpose cam, but then again, it maybe worth waiting to see how that R5 stacks up. Or a new GH6 for that matter.

  14. Except that camera is unwieldy and heavy and just has a terrrrrible design. The C100 series (and C200 and C500 II) are just way better designed. if Canon wants to keep rolling, they need to be OK with cannibalizing the C300 II, a camera that was way under specced at its release 5 years ago. With all the competition and a new RF Mount with amazing lenses they want to sell, would be real dumb to protect the C300 at this point.

I wonder if Coronavirus might kill the chances of some announcements happening at NAB this year :-/ Or ten years...! Oh do please share! 😉 (would count as "prior art", thus if someone did try to patent it, this forum thread could help strike it down!) Something to write on their tombstone? True! So many people think of MFT's sensor size as a "disadvantage", yet at times it is an ADVANTAGE

    Fuji X-T4

Kacey's tests are RIDICULOUS. Who in their right mind uses a camera like that? Plus, Gerald and Kacey were shooting on a preproduction model with lenses that probably needed firmware. I think the results of the cameras sent to various reviewers varied--which makes sense. One reviewer hooked up a GH5 and the X-T4 and did a side to side walking test---and the X-T4 acquitted itself extremely well. IMO, the X-T4 did not get a fair review with Gerald and Kacey. Better to see Jem Scholfield-- or Gordon Lang. Really good jobs, both of them.

Honestly Panasonic could take the GH5, slap PDAF into it and they'd sell a shit ton. While I'm not one to complain much about auto focus, I think there's a good chance that Panasonic would've killed all the other crop sensor cameras if they'd had PDAF for the GH5, particularly among the influencer/YouTube crowd. While many went with the A7 III, a significant number went the a6xxx route even though they're inferior cameras in every other way but auto focus and low light. While it's not a deal breaker for me, their auto focus obsession hooked them into Sony.

Plus it's great for low light - with f0.95 lenses we get exposure around T1.0 but DoF at FF equivalent of F2 which is much easier to maintain focus. I'm not attached to MFT but that one is a pretty significant aspect to get past.

Minolta Lens on an EF Mount

If I shot FF and didn't mind having a reversed MF direction, I'd just get a full set of the Takumars. They have this character that is rarely seen elsewhere, plus the build quality is absolutely excellent. One method that is very interesting is to convert the image to B&W in the last node and do the processing before that, as that means that you can use the colour information to enhance the look of the image by adjusting the brightness of each colour with a Hue vs Lum curve. Basically you just raise and lower each hue to get the nicest contrast. For example, if you had a shot of a model in front of a green hedge where the sun was on both the hedge and the model then a straight B&W conversion would have the model and hedge as roughly the same brightness. But if you lower the luminance of the greens then you can keep the exposure on the model but darken the hedge without having to make masks or do anything manually. If there were blue flowers on the hedge then you could brighten those up so now the model is in front of a dark hedge with bright flowers, etc. The technique can really take B&W images to the next level.

  24. So, here are some keepers from my trip to Edinburgh and Gdańsk. All in all, I think it's a pretty good lens. Even though my copy seems a little bit decentered (left side of the image is visibly worse than right), it doesn't disturb me that much. It allows me to get a whole different perspective and I like it.

Warping is only when you use electronic stabilization. I don’t know what to think about this X-T4. Fuji gave us everything they should include in the X-T3, but no true Game changer, Still some quirks (crop on 4k60, no internal 4.2.2, recording limit, exposure step). Hope the XH-2 will me more than that.

    Camera owning plans 2020

At the time, it blew me away and truth be told if I dug it out again now it probably still would. The criminal lack of use it has had is a long boring story and I now don't live in the same country where it is in long term storage so I can't imagine that will change any time soon! Its ironic that RED named their phone after the lightest element because God knows they built the RED ONE case out of some yet to be declassified alien type of heavy element. Thats one aspect that kills it for a great many people that could really benefit from how cheap you can get a used setup for now as its not something you can just pick up (literally and figuratively) and go out shooting with on a whim really. I think pride in ownership and sharing common ground and knowledge with other users of the same product/brand, whether its cameras or cars, was always OK in principle but the internet has warped the fuck out of it really. Or maybe just fully exposed the undertones that have always been inherent in it ! I think Apple was the template for that. And I always blamed Steve for that

I have, it has great rendering and very little distortion, also the manual focus ring is better than the 17-35 or 16-35. Unfortunately it has a horrendous minimum focus distance that was bad enough that it did effect it's use for video and photography. Some more of the F3, Internal S-log with Nikon 24-70 F2.8 G

Seriously though... it's a cool little lens and I would have paid double or triple for it an I would have been happy. Pentax-M lenses are amazing. Along with the Nikon 50mm Series E, the Pentax-M 50mm 1.7 was the first good lens I ever bought. I still have it in my closet somewhere. I should give that a test the next time I go out.

    Fuji X-T4

@Django If we’re doing the whole anecdotal thing I can safely say I would prefer the Made in China Fuji’s. I had two X-T2s, both brand new, and both wonky, one had the screen misaligned and the other had the faux leather on the grip out of place. They both had a weird smell as well. I also bought a brand new X100F, made in Japan of course, and the screen in the viewfinder got permanently stuck so I had to get a new copy. Owned two different X-T3s as well, both felt really well put together and I had zero problems with their functionality, never had them lock up not even once, and they never overheated. My current made in Japan Nikon Z6 has the card door all out of place with at least two millimeters of play from the body. And I never buy gray market products, always from a reputable retailer in Sweden.

    Magic Lantern Raw Video

Yep, the 5D2's are so cheap these days, I can get 3 at around $400-550 locally. I got mine for $500. But honestly, I believe the 5D3 is worth every penny if you are going to be a dedicated ML User, or want the most reliable RAW recording. Get yourself some Nikkor lenses and enjoy pushing those colours around...😎👍 I love my A7rii 4K to bits, but prefer the look and colours of my EOS M or 5D2 with ML Raw more.

  34. That's not the only reason easyrigs are used. They're used to redistribute the weight of the camera rig from the shoulder/back to your hips. They're also great for having fine control over height! You're not just stuck with whatever the height of your camera op's shoulder is. Makes for a very good tool indeed if you're abnormal! (too tall / too short) Canon C100mk2, Sony FS5, Panasonic EVA1 (only just!), UMP G2, JVC LS300 are all priced under the C200 The C100 and FS5 have been massive massive big sellers. I don't think that market should be ignored. (we all hope that Fujifilm won't ignore that market! Add XLR / NDs / SDI / TC to a X-T4 and add another grand or two to the price and we'd all be very happy!) If a C200 without raw (maybe with another feature or two removed, to further cripple it. Such as removing the C200's ethernet port. Maybe remove the 120fps HD option, cap it at 60fps even in HD. Even the 4K, limit it to 30fps rather than the C200's 60fps) was released at US$3K (the current C100mk2 price) then I can be certain such a camera would be a massive massive hit with all the canon fanboys!

  42. I use this one, although its becoming quite tricky to source now. Its great with things like RX100 but it will also take an A6500 without expiring. You have to really tighten the ballhead when its got any weight on it as its a bit flimsy and you have to be careful when using the two track pieces together that it doesn't have a bump when it crosses between them. Aside from that though, its really far better than it should be for the price as long as you manage your expectations about what to mount on it. The big plus is how small it is so you can set it up and use it in really confined spaces such as it is here predominantly inside a tabletop light tent (although the outdoor shot was done with it as well) where on a few moves it started outside the tent and went in through the front flap opening. Even with the A6500 on it is still able to do the angled climbing shots although gravity does give it a help on the way down ! Its nowhere near as sophisticated as the other solutions but it does basic A<>B cycles at different speeds and breaks down to go in any camera bag.
