  1. After many requests, P4K2Alexa PowerGrade + LUTs coming in the next day or two. Dawn to dusk, one PowerGrade, no adjustments to the transform.

  2. Hey guys, late last year I bought a P6K to work alongside the Alexa I normally shoot with. The goal was to have smaller, lighter camera that would live on a gimbal or could be used in situations where a full size Alexa wouldn't work. Knowing that both cameras would need to intercut seamlessly, I set about profiling the P6K using the same process I had previously used to profile the Alexa sensor and various negative film stocks. This process generates approximately 14,000 data points per camera. I then took the visual form of this data into Resolve and created a PowerGrade that accurately matches the P6K to the Alexa. After several requests, I've now packaged up the PowerGrade and added it to my store. You can check it out here: https://juanmelara.com.au/products/bmpcc-6k-to-alexa-powergrade-and-luts The PowerGrade At the heart of a PowerGrade is a custom 3x3 matrix that aligns the P6K's colours with the Alexa's. Because this is done through a matrix in linear space, the result is actually closer to a technical transform. The benefits this brings over a LUT is that it's non destructive, there's no danger of clipping or clamping data. And if you really wanted to, you could fully reverse the transform with zero loss in quality. This is because it doesn't break Resolve's 32bit float space like LUTs do. Probably one of the best features of a PowerGrade is that is fully editable and customisable. But since editing a 3x3 matrix isn't the easiest thing in the world, I've also included a Hue vs Hue/Hue vs Sat curve approximation of the matrix which is far easier to customise. And because it's a PowerGrade you can see exactly what is being done by each node, which means that I'm not able to hide snake oil like you can with a LUT. The LUTs Speaking of LUTs, knowing that a lot of people actually prefer to work with LUTs, I also created a LUT version. It's the exact same transform but in LUT form. One of the biggest limitations with most LUTs is that they clip any information that exceeds the top of the waveform, so basically any value above 1.0. This is a big issue with BMPCC footage as enabling Highlight Recovery or working with any ISO above 400 pushes valuable information above 1.0, where it is permanently clipped. With this BMPCC specific requirement in mind, I developed the LUTs to accept and work with values exceeding 1.0. So no matter if you enable Highlight Recovery or push the ISO to 6400, the LUT is able access and process all the information extending above 1.0. Anyway, check it out and let me know if you have any questions or comments. I'm keen to get feedback from any users to see what can be improved or expanded on. Comparisons Here are a few comparison images shot with the P6K mounted on the Alexa's top handle. The Alexa was using a Zeiss Milvus 35mm, the P6K was using a Zeiss Milvus 25mm, then cropped in post to match the FOV. The Alexa images are untouched, the P6K images feature minor exposure adjustments only. Check the store link for more images.

  3. I think you are reading too much into this. I am one of the persons who have been praising the GH5 in this thread, but I have 3 times as many full-frame bodies and probably 3 times as many full-frame lenses as well. Even though one guy had a good shoot with the GX85, I'm pretty sure most of us would prefer full frame for photography. Most of the FF advantages disappear when you get into video, which is why I go FF for photo and use my GH5 for video. If Canon's next mirrorless ticks all the boxes I will probably switch to FF for video as well, but I think it's more likely that the GH6 will be a better video camera.

  4. Used the 1dxIII on two full shoots now. Really beautiful image, Clog is lovely in 10bit and the Neutral color matrix, was never a fan of it on the 1DC. Full frame, over sampled 4K with Canon color is a magic combination. Though I’d gladly take a kick in the pants to have DPAF in FF 60p.

I guess both of you have the same common focus ' x works for me. You do you and use what you use, I don't care'. There's no hate towards FF aside from the FF shooters that pretend it is the one and only and best way as of course it depends and it is not.

The ARRI Alexa came out only a handful of years ago, and still is regarded as "latest cutting edge tech" (in a way). If you dig up reviews from back then, you can see people thought it was an amazing low light beast and were excited by the possibilities of shooting great images at 800 ISO! (which feels so quaint today)

  11. I think its just the reality for most creative jobs. Its either you know the right people or you are lucky or you are good at business or at least marketing yourself.

  12. You can see this yourself without asking a sales department, but you will need access to their page / ad account management. For example, your videos might be sequenced in a series of FB Ads for an e-commerce brand. At the first stage, you show an awareness video to a cold audience. Secondly, segment the audience that has watched 50% + of the first video and show them product focused videos for website traffic. During their research they’ll see promos, explainers, how-to’s etc around the web. Some will convert to a sale, others won’t. Those who don’t convert need a reminder or incentive, based on their online behaviour. So you use content re-marketing like testimonial videos to nudge them back to the basket. Whatever the objectives are, you can measure the ad spend behind the videos against a tracker event that will show you the sales conversion amount. I have someone else to manage the distribution aspect, but I have to understand it so my creative approach is also strategic. This is also how I speak to a client. They feel they are being served by someone who knows how to make video work specifically for their business need. At the end of the day, I just love shooting and editing stuff really!

  13. Lack of lens options is a valid objection, but Voigtländer does have 10.5mm f0.95 lens as long as you don't rely on autofocus. If you love cropping, the GH5 shoots 4992 x 3744 in 10bit... The A7III is obviously a good video-camera, and I would rather call a Pocket4k a side-step than an upgrade. We are arguing that FF is not necessary, not that all FF cameras are bad.

"Hate"?? I think you're missing the picture in terms of the usual proportions and intensity of debate. Usually for every dozen people you get saying "MFT is unusable" you'll see one person saying "FF is unnecessary", a big difference in both their type of arguments and the volume of them. Sometimes it is good just to bring balance back into the discussion.

  17. For the low budget videographers among us: a ZOOM LENS report. On the X-T3 the Fuji zooms have problems with video shooting, including exposure stepping and focus-by-wire jumpyness that is not a problem with stills. So I thought I'd report on a recent Nikon zoom I found to work around these issues. The Nikkor AF 28-85 f3.5-4.5 (1986-1999) is a great manual zoom/manual aperture ring lens to use on the X-T3. It is extremely affordable, I picked up a clean one in a local camera shop for $50, and mounted it with the $20 fotodiox adapter. It is a full frame SLR lens. It is PARFOCAL, the focus does not stray as you zoom in & out. I found the change in brightness as you zoom to be often unnoticeable unless you are watching for it, this really surprised me. f3.5 to 4.5 is less than a stop of change, about 2/3rds of a stop? And most important, the zoom ring is smooth. Often these Nikon zooms are slightly sticky, especially when trying to turn the zoom ring very slowly for a cinematic shot. The focus ring has a good amount of smooth travel for easy manual focus. Finally, the sharpness of this lens is excellent, compares to the 18-55 fuji kit lens. With some pixel peeping I can see a little CA color fringing at the edges, which you would expect for a vintage lens without in-camera digital corrections. There is a glowing review of this lens by Ken Rockwell online. I have another Nikon zoom which is not usable (24-85mm F2.8-4) from 2001, due to a sticky zoom ring, plus a manual focus ring which has a very short travel and is difficult for fine focusing at distances nearing infinity. Some zooms may have become sticky over years of continous use, keep in mind when looking in ebay etc. Vintage SLR zooms are often very parfocal, I also have two Canon FD zooms that hold focus as well, 35-70 f4 and 70-210 f4. I used the 35-70 for 30 years on my SLR and the zoom ring is still smooth. So for $70 you can get an excellent Nikkor 3:1 full frame zoom, especially if you don't have $3000-4000 for an excellent Fujinon 3:1 Cinema zoom. I am posting here rather than in the LENS forum because the Sony & Panasonic camera zooms may not have the same issues as Fuji.

The funny thing about Max's comparison video is that it made the Sony IBIS look really bad and I see Daniel Schiffer pull off some awesome moves handheld with his A7III all the time. Which leads me to think that the XT4's IBIS is more than enough to achieve that level of movement.

  19. There are a lot of comparisons about Flu and Covid-19; yeah, there are much more deaths in a year coused by the common flu. But remember that common flu have vaccines, it is a well known disease, have easy treatment and, more important, is circulating around for years and most of the people already have antibodies for it. This is the fear with coronavirus: most of the people does not have any antibody to it, nor it have a vaccine, and it have a VERY fast spread rate. And since more countries are starting to have it spread, more likely your country will have it soon or later - and yes, probably every country will get it. Here in Brazil was an good example: when only people coming from China were being monitored for coronavirus, we had no confirmed cases - because our economy sucks and not a lot of business people here are in China trading. But since the Italian outbreak (a country that Brazilian visits a lot, for tourism and family ties), we had 2 confirmed and more then 200 suspicious cases. And it tends to grow - probably there are people with the virus in the 14 days incubation period coming from other countries that the outbreak was not still detected. I think that the real tragedy will be when the virus reachs the African continent. Very little health / sanitary resources there, and with the fast spread rate of the virus, probably will be a REAL epidemic there.

One thing I do have to hand it to Fuji is they've finally come around to going all-in on the pre-release hype train, this camera has been reviewed by so many outside of Fuji's usual ambassadors. The number of videos I've sorted through over the last few days is nuts. While I'm not a fan of more buttons and switches, I do like the fact settings between stills and video are independent - that at least eliminates the constant fiddling of readjusting settings when flipping between the two. I'm trying to like this camera more, but then I see that it still jumps when changing ISO's like my XT2, and I use auto ISO when on a gimbal - its been great with the a73. Chris

  21. In the commercial world, filmmaking is first and foremost a marketing tool. It is for music videos too, but that market see it differently and you have to treat it as such. You don't have to where all the hats. I don't want to wear all the hats either. *overwhelm* You'd do better financially if you had that system in place, however if you're able to talk both strategically and creative, plus integrate seamlessly with other marketing skillsets - people take you much more seriously. They don't see you as just as video guy. That's my experience anyway. p.s learning stuff away from filmmaking is confronting, stressful and uncomfortable. Does my head in but it's getting easier. Also video in my local area is massively oversaturated. Over the past I've had to move ahead and differentiate. Just having an attractive style isn't enough.

Here is something to get you going. Unfortunately, there is no option for 1.33x desqueeze, so you are either stuck with having to look at squeezed image on your camera monitor or using an external monitor with more desqueeze options. Shooting Open Gate 4:3 with 1.33x Sirui will roughly result in a 16:9 final video. ( :

  27. Yes you’re on the hook. But like all things, to reach high levels of financial success you have to take big risks. You’re not quite right with the ROI thing. You can measure this stuff very precisely. To enlighten you further, imagine two meetings, where one guy is offering “a beautifully shot video”, and the other is offering a 300% sales increase for the business (using video). Who are they going to choose? Ive seen a huge shift in the way clients see myself by speaking to them in a way they can see how the video materials will be handled and distributed to get a result. Yes, you will need distribution and media buying knowledge. But it’s a great way of making you stand out from other video creators. Being the “dude with a camera” is fine for a lot of people, but if you’re after growth, it’s going to be very hard. Plus, if you can get the client a business result, the income is WAY better and gives you more freedom for passion projects.

  28. So after using this recorder a bit I can safely say I am not happy with using it in a professional environment. 1) You cannot have a LUT applied out of the HDMI or the SDI. Which is absolutely INSANE and a pain in the ass in a live event environment if your trying to match the look to another camera. This feature is on all of their camera's but not their recorder?!? 2) Viewing aids do not come up easily, you need to go through the menu every time you want to ad or remove a focus or exposure aid. They are completely impossible to use quickly. Given these issues, I might be looking at selling it, I'm kinda pissed I didn't catch these issues until after my return window has passed.

And before that, people got excited when there was film fast enough to close down the aperture to have deep DoF shots.... in full daylight! There was a deep DoF fad where everyone wanted to be able to create deep DoF shots. Many famous movie scenes were shot where action unfolded in the foreground, mid-ground and background simultaneously, and it was all in focus! Imagine the possibilities!! Perspective is great - it's just that we need so much more of it than we think we do. I like to do my own experiments and actually try things out, and probably the greatest thing I have learned during all my years of experimenting is that half the stuff that "everyone knows is true" is actually complete BS. Plato, who was (and still is) one of the greatest philosophers of all time, was the first book on biology printed on the printing press and distributed widely. One of the things he wrote was that women had less teeth than men. The interesting thing about this isn't that he was wrong, it was that it was so easy to check, but for whatever reason, it wasn't done. Moreso than that even, was that people never questioned it, despite being able to easily prove it within a few minutes of the question being posed. The volume of things we think we know but are wrong about is only eclipsed by the things that we don't know, and the things we don't even know to ask about.

  30. There is 0 evidence in this link above, just some random anonymous person posting a function on reddit without any explanation. After that, there is the usual non-sense talk from uneducated people over 900 messages. This is not what I call "blatant example." Where is the data coming from? What are the variables used for this "model"? Who is the author? What's his/her credential? Did he/she published anything in the recognized scientific literature? Unless, we get serious answers from these questions, this is pure internet garbage. But this paper about the quadratic growth is actually interesting, the methodology is described at the end with the warnings and current limitations https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.03638 The author is qualified in Astrophysics, not much for virology and public health https://www.nordita.org/~brandenb/ But at least, we agree on point #2. Time will tell for the situation outside China and we'll get a clearer picture very soon.
    1 point
  31. Also agree with that. On the other hand, the Flu is is a well known virus with available vaccine and organized disease management which also explains the low mortality rate. On the contrary it also justifies the containment measure taken against the Corona virus. If anything, the SARS was not very worrisome. It appears that the progression of the virus is now on the decreasing phase in China, thanks to the vigorous actions taken by the authorities over there... To be confirmed. The Chinese government is not a model of transparency but they remember how bad the 2003 SARS situation was managed and all the health organizations agree that there is a huge improvement this time (albeit, not perfect). I don't really believe in massive cover up for two reasons: 1. The information always comes out, especially in an age of social media despite the digital great wall in China 2. But more importantly, the virus is now hitting strong democracies like South Korea and European nations. These countries won't be able to hide anything if bodies start to pile up in complete contradiction with official statements. So even is China lied, the mortality rate in the other countries will be public knowledge very soon. According to public health specialists, the real challenge will come when poor countries will be impacted because they have very little resources to handle that and unlike Ebola, the world is already busy enough with domestic situations. To make matter worse, the limited supply of protective equipment and medicine coming out of China won't be prioritized to Africa or south Asia... That's all for me. I'm not going to step any further in this discussion because I'm not a doctor or a virologist and my point of view is pointless beyond this general statement.

  32. The facts behind the panic: Corona virus death toll so far after two months of existence: 3000 persons Mortality rate is about 2-3% and old people are the most vulnerable, about 80% of deaths recorded were from those over the age of 60, and 75% had pre-existing health conditions including cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. (source: WHO) What should really be a cause of concern: Nearly 1.35 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,698 deaths a day. Flu Kills 646,000 People Worldwide Each Year. 1769 per day average Stroke killed 5,000,000 people worldwide in 2016 Nearly 40,000 People Died From Guns in U.S. in 2017 Leading causes of death in the US in 2017: Heat disease: 647,457 deaths Cancer: 599,108 deaths Unintentional injuries / accidents: 169,936 deaths So we may want to take a huge chill pill. Eat healthy, double check left and right twice before crossing the street, put the seat-belt on and stop worrying about a small pandemic of a not so dangerous virus. That being said, the public safety measures and large gathering restrictions are totally justified to prevent the spread of the disease, Photokina or the Olympic Games are clearly not a priority at this point.

  35. Depends on the job, and I would advise anyone to think beyond getting a day rate. The thing about day rates is they aren’t scalable. They are based on time, and with only so many days you can work in the week, you can’t incline your income steadily. You could charge more, but then, you’re going to have to be a master specialist to achieve that. If it’s not TV, film or music videos....I advise anyone to not position themselves as a “videographer” or “filmmaker”. Instead you frame yourself as a business solution. Instead of talking about what shots you want to do, you talk about how you will get them a business result. This differentiates you from the over saturated “videographer” role - which in fact a lot of the industry see as “low cost” and easy to negotiate your price down. You appear as a “problem solver” who can grow their business. Also, getting the client to think more about the business result allows you more freedom with the creative stuff!

  40. Correction, I meant "Better Quality" mode. And I just tested the longGOP at 29.97 HEVC 400mbps, and that also plays back smoothly in "Better Quality" full resolution mode, a compression I've never used before. So no problems with 29.97 HEVC at any compression. It's the 59.94 fps HEVC that needs the "Better Performance" mode in the FCPX viewer.

  42. Yes. I've used a stock Mac Mini i5, 8GB ram for a year editing 4K60p H265 HEVC 10bit 200mb/s in Final Cut Pro without transcoding. For a single track of video the playback is smooth with the viewer's "View Quality" setting at "Better Performance". This slightly reduces the resolution of the playback display but at 4K is still a great picture to edit with. And as soon as you stop or pause playback it refreshes to full res. Set at "Better Quality" you get full resolution playback in the viewer, but the frame rate drops to maybe 15fps. Still, playback does not stall and the audio keeps up in sync without dropouts. Adding an effect may stall playback, but color adjustments (curves & color wheels) and audio equalization usually will not. If you are stacking layers of shots for keying, superimpositions, etc then you would want to transcode from H265. You need the latest Mac OS, Catalina for the correct handling of H265, the previous Mojave had a problem that crushed the blacks & whites of HEVC.

  43. Seems people like pairing their S1H with Leica-R lenses... and I'm one of them! I'm shooting a short doc on my brother about his comic book, "I Am Not Okay With This", as it's currently being adapted into a series for Netflix. This will be the second time he's had a comic book adapted into a series. The first was "The End of the F*cking World" which did well, however, he told me that people would see him signing copies of the original comic at cons, and accuse him of "ripping off the show". So this time, i wanted to help raise his profile a bit when "I Am Not Okay With This" is released, and it gives me something to flex my creative muscles on. Anyway, some sample stills... Panasonic S1H, Leica Summicron-R 35mm, 50mm, & 90mm. Not a final grade -- just wanted to get some images out.

  44. If anyone wants a laugh, check this out. This is what happens when you put the GH5 and Micro side-by-side and film outside. This is the exact same transformation as the above, which seems to match pretty well, but when you take it outside...... ........not so much!! Ha ha ha.. This is after setting the GH5 to WB of full sun, and carefully WB in post on both shots. Other images are all screwed up by about the same amount. The only variable here that is in play is that I had the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 lens on the Micro and the Panasonic 14-42 kit zoom on the GH5, so in theory there could be colour shifts, but both were set to F8 so were far away from whatever shifts might happen when they're wide open. I guess if this stuff was easy then everyone would do it. lol.

  45. Did you not read that link at all?? The answers are all right there to your questions. As for who the person is, doesn't really matter as I don't need to indulge in an 'appeal to authority fallacy' to make this point. Because you can look up the data yourself (from WHO/China themselves, the officially reported numbers. Which is exactly why you should take them with a big grain of salt!!), then run the figures yourself and get exactly the same result as was shared in that chart. It really is not that hard to do at all! You don't need a degree in mathematics to do it or understand it. Being able to repeat the results yourself is far far more important than the author having some fancy pants credentials. If you think he made a mistake, then run the numbers yourself and show us the mistake he made. (hint: he didn't, if you repeated this you'd get the same fit) Doesn't an R squared value of 0.9995 raise any question marks with you whatsoever? Even if you somehow skipped math at high school, just simply looking at its predictive power (he was spooky accurate!) should raise suspicions with you? Did you read the ELI5 comment at least in that thread? Wouldn't be the first (or last!) time the Chinese government have been caught making up data: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/nov/15/chinese-government-may-have-falsified-organ-donation-numbers-study-says This entire thread is worth a read: https://twitter.com/evdefender/status/1223887384892313600
