  1. How am I doing..... This like Scrabble, right? Where I get a triple bonus word score, for combing 5G / chemtrails / anti-vax all into one conspiracy theory! "Taken care of", that's very ominous! Hope they were not "taken care of" like they do with suspected cases in North Korea!!

Totally agree. It's more about how well the person behind the camera is operating it then the deficiencies of the camera its being shot on because most modern cameras are very good. We mostly nitpick...except for Panasonic not adding PDAF, thats just annoying as hell.

  3. It's common to see young dp's with their own easyrig and monitor, as an easy rig is something you use all day and in terms of hygiene, i've heard that argument multiple times. As a monitor, it's about a tool that you use on several jobs, where cameras and lenses change but the tool where you're looking it's always the same, so it helps with consistency on judging an image, etc.

But by the time FF gets everything there is in a GH5/GH5S/GH6 then I'm sure the MFT system will have moved further on as well! But isn't waiting on FF the "chasing rainbows" option? Just for example, how many people are still waiting for a mythical "a7Smk3"? (some folks have been waiting YEARS for this!) Meanwhile we've got a GH5(or GH5S) which is better in many regards! (Waveforms/TC/4K60fps/10bit/240fps/etc)

  5. Hey guys, late last year I bought a P6K to work alongside the Alexa I normally shoot with. The goal was to have smaller, lighter camera that would live on a gimbal or could be used in situations where a full size Alexa wouldn't work. Knowing that both cameras would need to intercut seamlessly, I set about profiling the P6K using the same process I had previously used to profile the Alexa sensor and various negative film stocks. This process generates approximately 14,000 data points per camera. I then took the visual form of this data into Resolve and created a PowerGrade that accurately matches the P6K to the Alexa. After several requests, I've now packaged up the PowerGrade and added it to my store. You can check it out here: https://juanmelara.com.au/products/bmpcc-6k-to-alexa-powergrade-and-luts The PowerGrade At the heart of a PowerGrade is a custom 3x3 matrix that aligns the P6K's colours with the Alexa's. Because this is done through a matrix in linear space, the result is actually closer to a technical transform. The benefits this brings over a LUT is that it's non destructive, there's no danger of clipping or clamping data. And if you really wanted to, you could fully reverse the transform with zero loss in quality. This is because it doesn't break Resolve's 32bit float space like LUTs do. Probably one of the best features of a PowerGrade is that is fully editable and customisable. But since editing a 3x3 matrix isn't the easiest thing in the world, I've also included a Hue vs Hue/Hue vs Sat curve approximation of the matrix which is far easier to customise. And because it's a PowerGrade you can see exactly what is being done by each node, which means that I'm not able to hide snake oil like you can with a LUT. The LUTs Speaking of LUTs, knowing that a lot of people actually prefer to work with LUTs, I also created a LUT version. It's the exact same transform but in LUT form. One of the biggest limitations with most LUTs is that they clip any information that exceeds the top of the waveform, so basically any value above 1.0. This is a big issue with BMPCC footage as enabling Highlight Recovery or working with any ISO above 400 pushes valuable information above 1.0, where it is permanently clipped. With this BMPCC specific requirement in mind, I developed the LUTs to accept and work with values exceeding 1.0. So no matter if you enable Highlight Recovery or push the ISO to 6400, the LUT is able access and process all the information extending above 1.0. Anyway, check it out and let me know if you have any questions or comments. I'm keen to get feedback from any users to see what can be improved or expanded on. Comparisons Here are a few comparison images shot with the P6K mounted on the Alexa's top handle. The Alexa was using a Zeiss Milvus 35mm, the P6K was using a Zeiss Milvus 25mm, then cropped in post to match the FOV. The Alexa images are untouched, the P6K images feature minor exposure adjustments only. Check the store link for more images.

The funny thing is, the only FF that matches or exceeds the features of the GH5 are... Made by Panasonic! Honestly the fact we're having this conversation is a sign of how fortunate we are. 20 years ago I never imagined that I'd have access to the cameras we have today. I figured at best I'd pinch my pennies until I could buy a XL1 or XL2 second hand. That was "the dream." I feel kind of fortunate that I'm still very much that 15 year old at heart, and still view things from a similar perspective. I realize how lucky I am, because young me would die to of had a GX85, let alone an A7iii or GH5! 😂

  12. I decided I am going to make an adapter for the URSA mini seeing as there isn't one available for the Mini (non pro version). It honestly should be really simple. Just going to remove an EF mount off a cheap adapter and attach it to a piece of sheet metal cut to size. Than I'll just have to shim it until its the perfect distance from the sensor. I am a bit jealous. I wish I was able to pick that one up for $500 I talked about earlier. I might hold out and get a Z-cam S6 down the road. They have an Electronic Variable ND adapter for it and I've been really impressed with the IQ on those cameras. I am jealous 🤣

  17. And I think that's really odd. "Most guys are using an easy rig more than a tripod or dolly on dramas and commercials?" That runs entirely contrary to my experience in the past six years on sets and locations around NYC (Brooklyn, queens, Manhattan). This ranges from productions from Netflix, HBO, A24, NBC, etc. to smaller, independent shoots. And a TON of commercials. Dollys, cranes, jibs, sticks, dominate shoots. If there's handheld, most of the time it's on the op's shoulder w/ AC pulling focus, and if there's tracking, a dolly grip behind the op. I don't think I have EVER seen an easyrig on any of these sets. I've seen a handful on documentary (I think Vice) over the years, but that's about it. I don't even see them on the music video shoots; I see way more gimbals or just handheld. For news gathering/event shooting, I see shoulder mount, tripods, and monopods. That's just my limited experience of course, but you might want to ask any grip, DP, or operator about the easyrig phenomenon taking over the world. On that note, why would so many Australian DP's own those two things (and just those two), an easyrig and smallHD monitors? I can understand a freelance camera operator perhaps owning one as a wet hire, but why would so many DPs? The production wouldn't provide a monitor and camera support for them? “We’ll bring the Alexa; you bring the easyrig.” ”P.S. don’t forget the SmallHD monitor.”

They need the money! 😁 I agree, but see below... Maybe so, but it's good enough for almost every case except extreme niche one-off shoots.. Then again, as you said, maybe just spend money on the lights and then having incredible lowlight ability virtually vanishes...because you have more lights. Those are all very, very nice to have and for me trumps the wider full frame perspective you get. I agree. And this happens every-time someone just comes out and says M43 is poopie because sensor is small and M43 users collectively roll their eyes.

  28. I didn't say I'm seeing more of them - every shoot has a tripod there, even if it's just for resting the camera on. But in terms of what they're actually using on set, I'm seeing a lot more DP's/Directors that prefer to shoot the currently in-vogue handheld look, as opposed to the sticks & dolly style. And when they're shooting that style they use an Easyrig 100% of the time. This is in Australia, most often shooting on Alexa mini, occasionally a F55/Red. Haven't had the fortune to work on an LF or Venice shoot yet but I imagine they'd be used in exactly the same way. What types of shoots/cams are you observing in New York?

  34. No hope on the side of old lenses all designed for the 24x36mm. Maybe a company like Meike (when I see the quality of their cine lenses) could release a cine zoom 18-55 mm T 2.9 constant parfocal 10 blades iris a focus throw > 200 degrees APS-C (mounts : M4 / 3, FujiX, SonyE) Around 1500 dollars. Or Sirui by an indigogo campaign. Maybe we could suggest them. An email isn’t expensive. A daydream isn’t expensive too.

  35. Lack of lens options is a valid objection, but Voigtländer does have 10.5mm f0.95 lens as long as you don't rely on autofocus. If you love cropping, the GH5 shoots 4992 x 3744 in 10bit... The A7III is obviously a good video-camera, and I would rather call a Pocket4k a side-step than an upgrade. We are arguing that FF is not necessary, not that all FF cameras are bad.

  36. For the low budget videographers among us: a ZOOM LENS report. On the X-T3 the Fuji zooms have problems with video shooting, including exposure stepping and focus-by-wire jumpyness that is not a problem with stills. So I thought I'd report on a recent Nikon zoom I found to work around these issues. The Nikkor AF 28-85 f3.5-4.5 (1986-1999) is a great manual zoom/manual aperture ring lens to use on the X-T3. It is extremely affordable, I picked up a clean one in a local camera shop for $50, and mounted it with the $20 fotodiox adapter. It is a full frame SLR lens. It is PARFOCAL, the focus does not stray as you zoom in & out. I found the change in brightness as you zoom to be often unnoticeable unless you are watching for it, this really surprised me. f3.5 to 4.5 is less than a stop of change, about 2/3rds of a stop? And most important, the zoom ring is smooth. Often these Nikon zooms are slightly sticky, especially when trying to turn the zoom ring very slowly for a cinematic shot. The focus ring has a good amount of smooth travel for easy manual focus. Finally, the sharpness of this lens is excellent, compares to the 18-55 fuji kit lens. With some pixel peeping I can see a little CA color fringing at the edges, which you would expect for a vintage lens without in-camera digital corrections. There is a glowing review of this lens by Ken Rockwell online. I have another Nikon zoom which is not usable (24-85mm F2.8-4) from 2001, due to a sticky zoom ring, plus a manual focus ring which has a very short travel and is difficult for fine focusing at distances nearing infinity. Some zooms may have become sticky over years of continous use, keep in mind when looking in ebay etc. Vintage SLR zooms are often very parfocal, I also have two Canon FD zooms that hold focus as well, 35-70 f4 and 70-210 f4. I used the 35-70 for 30 years on my SLR and the zoom ring is still smooth. So for $70 you can get an excellent Nikkor 3:1 full frame zoom, especially if you don't have $3000-4000 for an excellent Fujinon 3:1 Cinema zoom. I am posting here rather than in the LENS forum because the Sony & Panasonic camera zooms may not have the same issues as Fuji.

Looking at XT4 I start thinking that APC-S could be the sweet spot between video-specs\overall size of the system\dof and lowlight\price. I wounder what X-H2 may bring to the table as well.

Are we though? There's a reason why the majority of Hollywood cinematographers still choose the 2K image from the Alexa over 4K, 6K or even 8K from a Red. With the Mini LF's release, the rise in FF and anamorphic lenses, more DPs are shooting at higher resolutions, but for now, and the foreseeable future, 2K is the resolution choice for delivery and distribution. Since the beginning of digital acquisition, the goal was to create an image comparable to film. To this day, the Alexa is the only camera that comes even remotely close. And even that is a stretch. You can look to The Walking Dead as proof. The original show has always been shot on S16 film. The spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, is shot on an Alexa. And although I love the look, the original S16 is a better image. Unfortunately, there is this YouTube craze where content creators claim that the image from this or that camera is as good as an Alexa. There are coloring tutorials and color space transforms to try and mimic the Alexa. And people can get it close, but it's never the same. As far as ergonomics go, I agree with you... I prefer using a DSLR/DSLM to a rigged out camera, but I assume the eventual goal of most filmmakers is to shoot at a professional level with professional equipment and unfortunately these consumer cameras won't ever be at the level of proper cinema cameras... in terms of features or image quality. The good news is that story is still king, so if you prefer the handheld dexterity of a smaller camera, or Brothers3 prefers the cinema construction and features of a cinema camera, the stories you produce will have a much larger impact than the cameras they were filmed on... If that's not the spirit of this site, I don't know what is?

  45. Today is the day we got news of first, confirmed case of COVID-19 in Poland. Not that far from where I live - only 130 km. We don't know much about the patient, apart from: he is not a senior, isn't immunocompromised and that he recently got back from Germany. Supposedly, everything was done the way it should - he was driven to a hospital in a special ambulance and everyone, who had any contact with him, are taken care of. We'll see how it goes.. Right now, a lot of my students colleagues (I'm a med student) don't have 'classes', because the hospitals can't provide enough face masks and disposable gowns for the whole personnel.
