Canon EOS 1D MKIII specs revealed
independent and 2 others reacted to gt3rs for a topic
Got the 1Dx III yesterday and I did play around a bit here some first observations: The good: Camera is really fast in everything, scrolling to images, menu etc.. is faster than the 1Dx II 20 fps silent shooting is really good and there is no slideshow effect is more like looking at video at 20fps. Normal OVF seems to be improved and with the people/face priority seems to do a good job, test with 50mm at 1.2 in af-servo with my kid and was quite impressive. In LV with eye tracking is almost perfect. The new AF touch joystick seem useful, need to get used a bit more but is already working out well for me. FF 5.5k and 4k the image quality is really good. 4k crop it is similar to the 1Dx II but with the benefit of 10bit and log. 120fps FHD seems the same as the 1Dx II but would need to test more (also here benefits is 10bit log and also EIS works at 120fps too) Video AF is a big improvements over the 1Dx II, face / eye tracking works really well. Also tracking objects seems better than the 1Dx II. For manual AF peeking and the arrows are quite useful. EIS work surprisingly well at least from my first test especially up to 50mm, above is not that effective (at 200mm is not that great) but this is known. With a 24 1.4 seems gopro 7 style stabilization that is quite cool but need to test it out more. All files types are now natively supported in Resolve so CRM, 10bit h265 and 8bit h264. The not so good: You can record RAW on one card and 4k proxy on another but you cannot record a 4k on both card at the same time. I knew it before but just doublechecked. The video format menu is a mess, would be cool to be able to disable modes that I never use like all the HD ones and the IPB ones. With the USB-C cable you can mount the camera as storage but strangely enough you can copy any file but not the CRM, you need to open the canon tool to copy. Of course with the card reader it works for all files. Still no histogram while recording video, also no zoom in while recording. On my machine with Resolve (Nvidia 1070) the h265 10 bit files are not HW decoded so they are very slow much slower that the RAW. H264 are fine. Apparently 1070 can only do h265 4:2:0 10bit HW decoding. 2070 can do also 4:4:4 but could not find if it can do 4:2:2. As the LV AF is so good they could have offered an EVF as addon a la M6 so you can have both OVF and EVF. Tomorrow I will have my first ice hockey match with it so I can test the AF for photo, I will try a bit with OVF and a bit in LV, maybe if I have time I will try to record some video too.3 points -

I'll try my best to make it as comprehensive as I can. With regard to 8bit CDNG in B&W with a vintage lens, this is one with an elderly Leica Elmarit R 28mm f2.8 which, again, was the result of an accidental pressing the shutter while still in Cine mode moment ! This is from my upcoming short "When Jet Lagged Wives Attack"1 point

The fp has some interesting ISO behaviors, certainly! I've been using it at lower ISOs even in the dark and then pushing things 2.7 stops without major issues. It's truly a form of night vision. Shooting wide open at F1.4 helps as well, but consider this example of a quick night shot I did: First shot is at ISO 320 pushed 2.7 stops, second shot is ISO 2500 as-is, third shot is ISO 320 pushed 2.7 stops again, and the last shot is ISO 2500 as-is. The original video file straight out of Resolve can be found here to avoid seeing the recompression macro blocking artifacts from YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/redirect?q=https%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com%2Fopen%3Fid%3D1sEtAlhfZOjfHO7R7XmXrJJvMUiJqRAHC&event=video_description&v=vYpPZPCWo5g&redir_token=-6uwx0ZKXpomIasN7CDyU0Ps-m98MTU4NDAzNTQzNkAxNTgzOTQ5MDM21 point -

All schools / kindergartens / universities are going to be closed here, starting tomorrow. Up to 25th March. Huh, maybe I'll finally have some time to record my entry for The Single Soviet Prime Lens Challenge..1 point -
A very low budget one made by interns though ! They are stills but its not exactly full moot but certainly moot-ish when it comes to this camera because not only are the CinemaDNG files very much in the same ballpark quality wise but its 440Mbps ALL-I mov mode is pretty malleable as well. This is not exactly a great content example at all and is far from being a deliberate A/B test (it happened because I accidentally had it in Movie mode when I was meant to to take a still ) and it has different framing and in motion etc but hopefully offers some sort of illustration. The top frame is a DNG still and the bottom one is sourced from a screenshot JPEG of the UHD mov file in VLC and then they're coloured to sort of match. I'm taking my time with it before I come to any sort of conclusion and will likely do a review thread when I have. My time with it has been complicated/compromised by the circumstances in Japan as the whole permanent facemask thing is, whilst absolutely necessary, a real pain in the arse when it comes to operating a camera. Particularly one with no EVF as I'm having to hold it at arms length which means I have to put my glasses on which means they are prone to steaming up in the damp weather we had with the breath from the mask etc etc. So now I'm back home I'll be able to look at it in more depth. The initial impression is that the quality is certainly there and that my original view of it when it was first announced as it being the spiritual full frame successor to the original BMPCC has been borne out. But of course, that succession also comes with the same sort of quirks and caveats so its not all golden !1 point

FP on top, Q file below. I tried not to alter the Q pic too much, balancing the exposure and adding a little saturation, no sharpening. I did more balancing to try and match the exposure and colour on the FP file, no sharpening. Simple Jpeg export. The 3rd party lens hood I chose for the Takamur 28mm clearly vignettes.1 point -
Well my willpower didn't last, purchased my own Sony F3 with active EF adapter, rig, SD to SxS adapter, v-mount power adapter, and 3 full size NP batteries for $800. The batteries and EF adapter are worth that by themselves.1 point

Oh, i see what you're trying to say now. Again, there are reasons for the decisions we make where theory and practice in hardware diverge and you have to make trade offs to balance one thing against another - more bigger picture stuff again. This is already an area i can't discuss publicly but I guess what I'll say is, if we could have implemented things that way or differently back then, we would have. And it's not that we didn't know some ways we could improve what we had initially done with DNG (much of it informed by the hardware problems we were solving back then), it just didn't make sense to spend more time on it when we already knew we could do something else that would fit our needs better. Like i said, the problems you describe were solved for us with Blackmagic RAW where we were able to achieve image quality we wanted with small file sizes and very fast performance on desktop with highly optimized GPU and CPU decode, the ability to embed multiple 3DLUTs, etc etc etc. THAT is a no brainer to me. ? I do understand your point of view especially as someone who developed a desktop app around DNG but there are so many more considerations we have that i can't even begin to discuss. Something I've learned being at a company like this is how often other people can't understand some of the decisions some companies make, but I find it much easier now to have an idea of what other considerations likely led them to choose the path they did. It's hard to explain until you've experienced it but even when i was just beta testing Resolve and then the cameras, I had no idea what actually goes on and the types of decisions and challenges faced. I see people online almost daily berate other camera manufacturers about things "that should be so obvious, why don't they do it" and I just have to shake my head and shrug because I have a very good idea why the company HASN'T done it or why they DID choose to do something else. I'm sure other companies have a very similar insight into Blackmagic as well, because for the most part we all have similar goals and face similar challenges.1 point -
The Fp seems like the next big indie hit. A lot of good ideas in such a small body can make the difference. "Interestingly I also bumped into Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki at the show and had some small-talk. I had my venerable Samsung NX1 with me, and he remarked that the product manager for the NX1 went to work for Sigma’s camera team on the Fp! So they are in good hands as this camera was genuinely ground-breaking and ergonomic." Maybe planning an interview with the product manager would be super interesting.1 point

I'm the manager of a movie theater on Cape Cod, our business has been absolutely tanking this month compared to last year. I'm glad my wife works from home in medical billing and coding, because if it gets bad here we will have to close temporarily. 75% of our customers this time of year are over the age of 65.0 points

does it mean we have to say amen to every word you say or every feedback you give ? because it sounds like it and that's a bit scary. you think this camera is good ? none have seen a footage and from what i see from the specs it is far from beeing a revolution from my point of view. it's a bit of a "terror" feeling here, don't agree with me and get banned ? sad if it is your thinking, but maybe the way you said it was just awkward. webrunner was a pain and was rude to many here, i don't recall you threatening him of a ban in the last monthes. maybe because he wasn't rude to you ? (well he banned himself since). you act a bit like red with you, tell things i don't like and i'll sue you. well... i don't find his question to be disrespectfull.0 points
