  7. We shot this over a few days in Canada on the Panasonic S1 and Mavic pro 2. Honestly I can't be happier with the S1. Having shot on the A7iii and the A7sii for the past years the S1 is quite an advance in image quality. There is so much latitude in post and the dynamic range is really great in comparison.

Same situation here in Madrid. Both my wife and I are freelancers and everything has just stopped, no work at all for the foreseeable future (I reckon late April/early May at the earliest). Trying to get a few clients who haven't paid recent jobs to cough up what they can. My wife is thinking she my have to lay off her employee. Grim. It's a total lock down, a very weird situation. You get up in the morning, it's a lovely spring day and think, "A walk in the park would be nice"...and then you remember! We are lucky as we live on the top floor of our building with a 15m2 terrace with plants, bbq etc. I'd hate to imagine what it's be like cooped up in a little flat for 15 days. Having a nine month old baby keeps us occupied mind! Other activities we have to keep us occupied are set up the Ikea hydroponics system we have lying around and try to grow some lettuce, learn how to ferment vegetables and make bread on Youtube, a bit more gardening, try to watch a film, repeat...we are already on day 4 here (only went out for some food and medicines)...tick tock

  9. I'm good on TP, cleaning stuff, and so on. The carnage in the stores is insane, I was shopping yesterday and one store had TP on the shelf, I thought for a second about getting some but decided to leave it for people that needed it more since I have 10 or so rolls that should last me a couple months. Then the next few that passed by hoarded all of it into their carts. People are doing the same with laundry detergent, sanitizer and so on. Sometimes people just disappoint you with their actions. Gonna spend the extra time doing a few things: learning more editing techniques with photoshop including blending images, curves, masking and so on to better edit portraits and landscape shots I've been wanting to capture a holy grail time-lapse so I'm gonna tinker with a few attempts at that its Milky Way season and I've only shot it once before with a crappy result, there are a few remote places for decent MW images, gonna hit them before it gets to hot I switched to Resolve last year, but I'm going back to FCPx as its just faster for my workflow, gonna spend some time getting reacquainted just bought a NISI filter holder, the 10 and 6-stop Big Stoppers and some graduated ND's, gonna try to up my landscape game Basically lots of skill building for a better reel/portfolio. Stay sanitized all. Chris

Let's ignore the lame jokes, and get on with the Film challenge. It can be shot on ANYTHING (Alexa, DSLR, Mirrorless Smartphone, GoPro, Spycam etc). Sound should be decent. No restrictions on the story. Acting can be as bad as can be expected from a paranoid filmmaker locked with 4 walls. No limit on how many short films you can submit. Maybe, we become Famous, for creating an opportunity of hope, when the world is going through ome of it's worst crisis in recent years.

  11. Well on a more positive note. We can see from China and S.Korea that when you tackle the problem head on with tests and restrictions you do seem to get it under control within a month to 6 weeks - hopefully numbers in Italy will start to come down. Also a major panic in the asset markets, should mean we get some great investment opportunities for those that have some cash....

I can't help noticing people talking about the financial impact from all of this. Yes, it sucks, but there are financial lessons to be learnt about how to run your business. 1) Credit for new gear shouldn't be the norm. 2) A healthy 3-6 months of expenses would certainly help you weather the storm. 3) If you take on employees, you've also got to think about them. 4) Diversify. Arguably not helpful in a pandemic, but good advice when business turns south. Any other ideas? Remember the world continues to turn with or without money.

  13. Not only have I lost multiple jobs and screenings at this point, but my wife and I's supplemental income as landlords looks like it might be in jeopardy too, depending on what politicians do. Yikes. The US is going to get rocked hard by this all around. If we are where Italy is 2 weeks from now, it ain't likely to be pretty. My opinion is that life in the USA is pretty much random cultural nonsense anyway, with people in power operating with fear rather than our citizen's best interest. What happened yesterday at the White House was just another paper cut, just a longer stroke. "It's national emergency time all of a sudden! Pretend everything I've said over the past 4 weeks about COVID is irrelevant. And here are a bunch of corporate CEO standing behind me for some bullshit reason! I'm not responsible!" I'm pretty damn cynical about society right about now.

  15. Bringing the topic back from the dead. This is what you get, if you are advised to stay home and have some time at your hands. Some people fix broken cabinets, some paint walls, I opted for completing the rig and making it more handy. X-T3, Helios 44-4 via dumb adapter, Tiffen Variable ND, Isco Ultra Star (1st Gen), myFM from Eugene Myreev. And at the back: 10,000mAh power bank plus NP-F750 battery, both acting as a counterweight and supplying power to the camera and external monitor (Fotga A50TL). The coiled cable is responsible for triggering recording remotely, so that I don't have to touch the camera buttons, at all. I was lucky enough to get the majority of parts from SmallRig, and at discounted prices (I paid 8$ for the cage, 15$ for the baseplate, 10$ for the top handle). The strap acts like a cheap-o alternative to easyRig, I just hang it off my neck. And it fits into my backpack!

So What Will You Do ?

My municipality is now in lockdown with travel restricted in and out and all bars, cafes, restaurants and leisure facilities closed. I'm pretty sure that it will last much longer than the 14 days currently decreed by the regional President and that we won't be fully back to normal for many months. Being confined to the house isn't too much of an issue for us work wise as we both work from here anyway (though boy did I get out of being a professional sports photographer at the right time as I would be fucked) but it does mean needing something else to fill up the non-working hours to stop us getting cabin fever. I'm guessing that a lot of people on here might well be about to experience similar confinement if they aren't already, so, trying to make lemonade out of lemons, what long put off projects will you be doing ? For me, aside from finishing a couple of the latter Final Fantasy games to get me sharp for the release of the VII remake next month , I think I might look at : Making a start on learning some Unreal Engine stuff Re-wiring/configuring my music studio Having a couple of lens world cup shootouts to try and thin the collection Developing a wireless interface for BM ATEM switchers Advanced urban combat tactics for hand sanitiser purchasing Be interesting to see what people are planning and seeing how those plans progress here to keep our spirits up ? Might even be a good time to have a "One Single Room In Your House Film Challenge"

  19. Your focal length also has a great deal of impact on performance. Some examples would be shooting scenes from further back with a more telephoto lens to create separation from the performance/actors and give them more space. The opposite is also true, if you get uncomfortably close with wide angle lenses, you'll inherently see a difference in the performance vs if you were shooting from a more comfortable distance.

    Scanning film

I have to say you guys should check out the Negative Lab Pro Facebook group, guys are using their mirror less and light setups and getting excellent results. Honestly I’ve used my plustek and gotten fantastic results that were as good as the lab, just takes time on the colors. I agree with @BenEricson unless you have 1-2 hours a roll to devote to scanning, support a lab! I use mail my film out in a prepaid mailer and use Old School Photo Lab but there are tons of labs. The darkroom is another popular one. My current 35mm setup is a Nikon FE2 with a 28mm, 50mm and 100mm e series primes.

Agreed. Even if you have loads of time, it is nearly impossible to get the same color and texture that you get with the high end scanners. This scanner is really good but only does 35mm. I’ve heard a lot of people swear by it. The output really simulates what a 35mm print should look like. Correct colors etc. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F202603055965 I personally would rather support a local lab and get my scans back in 2/3 days via email. I’m shooting 120 and 35 so the price for high end scanners would be too costly for it to make sense.

Ugh, my nascent video production company just took a real hit. Two weeks ago I pitched a substantial video project to a consultant in the nonprofit world I've worked with, and he has very eager and asked me to send him a proposal. I just did and he immediately replied that he's getting out of the business because he fears a major recession is coming. That job would have really set me up to launch my new company. Luckily I haven't quit my day job....

    Scanning film

The sad truth is that, in order to scan 35mm and medium format stills in best quality, you need dedicated high-end film scanners like the ones made by Nikon (Coolscan) and Hasselblad (Flextight). Nikon unfortunately stopped manufacturing the Coolscans many years ago. Today, they are sought-after items costing up to $2000 on Ebay, with many models needing SCSI or Firewire connections. Hasselblad scanners cost about $15,000. All affordable solutions on the market, flatbed scanners (like the Epson Perfection series or the Reflecta budget film scanners) do not render the full quality of film. Solutions for digitizing film with a camera and a macro lens like the Nikon ES-2 lens adapter are rather flimsy.

  31. I’m going to say it will be closer to a $5K launch price and slowly work down to $4K and stay there for awhile. As with everything Canon, it’s a wait and see after all the gotchas are found out. Like no 24p in 1080p or massive rolling shutter, or record limits in 4k24p but not 30p. Head scratcher shit like that. But so far it’s looking pretty nice except for the wallet bashing it will take to buy into RF.
    1 point
  32. Damn. I know they say 'if you have it, flaunt it'. But do they really got to flex on us like that. Geez. I would love to own a set like that someday. I know it's a lot of money, they're really sought-after, but you know they say it's a solid investment... can't see that going down the drain anytime soon... or wait...

We know we're not exceptional in this regard (getting through this pandemic via some cockamamie pseudo-scientific "American" miracle) or many others. We're shutting down our events and schools, working from home if possible, maintaining social distance, and BUYING ALL THE FUCKING TOILET PAPER IN THE WORLD!!! Also, we know our health care system isn't great and the magical free market won't fix it, hasn't so far. At the same time, it is a pretty damn nice place to live. So there's that.

    Scanning film

I actually shoot 35mm film on the regular. It’s fun and the images look fantastic. I own a plustek 8100 film scanner, which I use vuescan to scan my images and a Lightroom app called Negative Lab Pro to convert. That said the process takes me 1.5 hours, so unless I have time to scan, I usually opt to have scans done by a lab for about $14. (Less if you give more rolls). Many NLP users make their own scanner with a light table, macro lens and camera and the scanning process is much faster than my plustek. Film is very much still alive in 2020.

  39. I live in a rural, conservative place. We certainly have the right to have guns, loud trucks, confederate flags and massive anti-semitic billboards on your front lawn (seriously, it's about a mile from my house). However, it is illegal to have solar panels on your roof because it's an eyesore--despite being so sparsely populated there's no one to see each other's roofs. Every year our sheriff resigns right before elections and appoints a successor--but we were gerrymandered into a district with a distant city, so our votes barely count anyway. There is only a single high speed internet provider here, who legally claims coverage of my entire county, but only has actual coverage at half the houses, and their speeds only get up to 1/2 the advertised, already overpriced package. 3/4 phone providers don't actually have any service at all here, despite all of them claiming 4G or 5G. I truly love the US, but there are some blatant and bizarre exceptions to our freedoms, and we are currently overrun with large corporations that are allowed to lie, overcharge us, and get tax breaks without providing any service at all.

    Camera owning plans 2020

I have a look if I can find some dngs as i mostly shot prores. I am rocking the mini 4K since 3 years now, also got it because the 4.6 was way out of my reach. I was skeptical at first as well mainly about DR and the never ending rumors about the necessity to rig it up.Well, slap a small v-mount battery on it put in a cfast card and you are good to go; no cables no flimsy stuff. About DR, yes...there isn't much headroom in the highlights in prores (even in 444). You just wont be able to hold the sun if it's in your background and you try to expose for the skin even a little bit; small sony or canon apsc cameras do have more highlight retention and more DR on first sight for sure. What i fell in love with is the color information in the given DR. There is just so much more color information and fine gradation in the mids and shadows. Also the global shutter is just magic for everything that moves...no matter if the subject moves or the camera. If you shoot fashion shows with lots of flash light..you just cant beat the look of global shutter here. It's bad in lowlight, as are my eyes. So i never cared about it. thats my very first test shot with the ursa, shot in prores 422 hq in hd only, its a noobish clip for sure but I got quite a bit better with handling that camera since then. As you can see if you are not careful the highlights clip away easily in a sunny day.

Unfortunately, it had rained earlier in the morning and when coming back down I slipped and fell on my keister. COVID19 Kibosh

As much as I don't want to discuss Covid-19 on a video site, I would like to ask my fellow forum members to not horde every single bit of soap and antibacterial hand sanitizer... Antibacterial soaps/hand sanitizer gel will not kill Covid-19 because it is a virus and not a bacteria. Hand washing with regular soap will have a more beneficial effect. With that said, when soap isn't available, hand sanitizer is an acceptable alternative but it will only have a lasting effect if everyone has access to it. So please don't be one of the assholes that are stocking up for the End of Days.

Here in Italy it's also true. For example now our healthcare system is working close to maximum capacity in most regions and in some areas with the most covid19 cases is working beyond its maximum capacity, which means nurses working 10-12 hours instead of 8, lack of intensive care beds, etc. And part of the problem with this virus is that for years the healthcare system has been weakened because the political religion was and still is "privatization, austerity and liberalism are better" with many public services being given away to the private sector a small bite at a time.

  45. I work (and have worked) in multiple rental houses that have rented to all types of productions. Easyrigs get rented a lot, but mostly to commercials and branded content. They work great for getting that spontaneous, free-floating handheld look, shot-from-the-hip style that's prevalent now in ads, both on TV and stuff that get's aired on Youtube. It's also great for documentary work, since it allows to hold the camera for much longer periods of time. 20, 30, 40 minute handheld takes become much easier with an Easyrig. For actual dramatic, narrative material, easyrigs are used much less. Dramatic cinematography relies on the ability to control your frame and land precisely on marks. This is really hard to do with an Easyrig because it tends to swing the camera when you turn. Also, extended handheld tracking shots are impossible because when you walk with an Easyrig, the motion from your hips gets transmitted through the arm and is visible in the footage. There is a use for the Easyrig for helping with low-angle handheld shots with really heavy rigs (such as Alexa 65, or Venice with certain anamorphic lenses), but the standard in handheld cinematography is a well-balanced camera on the shoulder and a pair of strong hands either holding grips, or the mattebox.
    1 point
  46. I'm not saying that. My experience is with commercials, where most dp's I worked with had their own easyrig, monitor and filters. Everything else they rent on case by case basis. No, they're not always with the easyrig. No even close. But some jobs, when handheld is the aesthetic, they use their own thing. That's it. And I said young dp's in my first post.

    Plastic Fantastic

This thread is for all of those cheapie, plastic lenses that shouldn't be as good as they are. There are a few well known lenses that carry the moniker proudly like the Canon 50mm 1.8 and 40mm 2.8, or the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 D. But there are some lesser known lenses like the Tokina 19-35mm that have a cult following and are often referred to as a "Plastic Fantastic." The first lens I will mention is the Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5. For the price, it shouldn't be as good as it is. Here's a sample frame from the 5D Mark iii with ML Raw... I have a few more on my computer I'll add later today. Do you guys have any favorite Plastic Fantastic lenses? Please share and upload some sample videos or video frames.

  48. So, here are some keepers from my trip to Edinburgh and Gdańsk. All in all, I think it's a pretty good lens. Even though my copy seems a little bit decentered (left side of the image is visibly worse than right), it doesn't disturb me that much. It allows me to get a whole different perspective and I like it.
    1 point
  49. I believe I've had a chance to own one of many rebranded versions of this Tokina - Vivitar 19-35 mm f/3.5 - 4.5 Series 1. And I must admit it's one of the lenses I regret selling. Build quality was horrible, handling was cumbersome. But, man, the images coming out of it were gorgeous (at least to my eyes, hahaha). Here are some photos I took with it and a7 III: (FYI, the B&W photo depicts Gdańsk Town Hall, whereas the last two show Malbork Castle). As a matter of fact, right now I'm eyeing another copy of it and most likely I'll end up buying it.

    Plastic Fantastic

Another one of my favorite Plastic Fantastic lenses is the Nikon Series E 50mm f/1.8. When the Series E lenses were released, Nikon was chastised for their poor build quality. But in comparison to today's lenses, they're built like tanks. About 6 months into filming my movie, life took a turn and I went through a rough patch that's really just beginning to smooth out. Unfortunately, that rough patch forced me to sell all of the lenses I was using to shoot my film. I dug deep into the gear closet and pulled out the Nikon 50mm 1.8 Series E. This is the result of that test... In some weird way, the rough patch I went through was a blessing, it forced me to look at my film in a different way and eventually led me to probably my favorite of Plastic Fantastic lenses... the Canon 28mm 1.8. I've posted plenty of shots from that lens, so I won't bore anybody with them, but that is one lens I will never sell. By lens metrics, it's not even that great of a lens, but its rendering oozes character and mood. In my opinion, it's probably my favorite lens of any lens I've ever used. Canon has a few Plastic Fantastic lenses. I would love it if Canon came out with a budget friendly cine lens lineup using these lenses' formulas in proper cinema housings.
