heart0less and 2 others reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
File this under "Just checking it works/Isolation Cabin Fever" but just had a quick go with the UVC output function to see if a makeshift external monitor can be deployed if you need one but aren't carrying one. The short answer is yes it can. You'll need an Android device (its doable on iOS but only with a costly adapter last time I checked) and with older devices such as mine you'll need a USB OTG cable which are only a few quid and useful anyway to connect USB drives etc to the phone. You'll also need a viewer app and there are a myriad of free and paid ones on the Play store so just search for combinations of "uvc" and "usb webcam". I haven't tested enough of them to draw a conclusion so best to use your own judgement based on whatever downloads/review criteria you normally use. When you have the software installed, its a simple case of connecting the USB-C of the FP to your phone (either directly if your phone is USB-C or via the OTG adapter if not) and the default setting of your FP is to auto-detect what you have connected to the USB-C port so you will see a prompt telling your to switch to Cine mode. So, is it useful? It could have been and might still be if you don't mind the caveats. The first caveat is that it will only work in Cine mode. The second one is that you don't have access to any of the menus (not even the QS) when it is in UVC mode and won't be able change anything, although if you have a lens with manual aperture, set the mode to shutter priority and have Auto ISO set you can some minimal non-optimal control. The third one is that on my phone (which is only USB2 on the OTG port) the performance isn't great or even approaching not that great in terms of lag and frame rate. On better devices this should be less of an issue. With those sort of caveats, the question is whether its of any use whatsoever and again the answer for me is still a very frustratingly "almost". The biggest boon is that with a cheap 1/4" 20 mounting mini ball head and phone grip attached to the FP you can have the elusive tilting monitoring solution which I find invaluable without an EVF. It can also be fully articulated to be front facing if required. Would you use it to actually do meaningful monitoring with ? Its performance doesn't make that viable on my device at least but for framing when the camera is not at eye level then its perfectly fine and also for focus checking as most of these apps have a finger pinch function to zoom in. Do I need that all the time ? No but as my phone is Android anyway, its far more convenient to have a cable and adapter in my bag to press it into service when I do rather than having to carry a real monitor and all the additional power and mounting stuff that goes with it. The fourth caveat of course is that it takes up the USB port so no external drive and if you are thinking "well if I'm recording on SD thats not an issue" then welcome to caveat number five which is that you can't record internally either ! So you can frame with it but have to unplug it every time you want to record anything. Oh well at least it passed a bit of time while we are confined to our house !3 points -

It's not about hate, it's about wanting competent leadership during a global pandemic the likes of which most of us have never seen in our lifetimes. Our president is an idiot. If you can't get beyond your own politics and realize that then you're the one with the problem. It is literally, in the literal sense, impossible to deal with this in any meaningful way without addressing the idiot we have as a president. His incompetence has contributed to this mess here in the US, and he has been among the leading source of disinformation. His other awful qualities really aren't relevant (like the racism) but they certainly do not help.3 points -

Says a guy sitting on the toilet. 😉 I kid! I kid! Don't take that joke too seriously. But it's kinda like the poop calling the other turd brown, you know? Speaking of jokes, less than a week ago people were making ha-ha's about the CDC, WHO, and COVID in right wing watering holes like the FNC. Mocking the virus hand-wringing. Somehow claiming it's a hoax. This week it's suddenly incredibly serious and we all need to be part of the solution. Not that I disagree with it being serious and all, but funny how rhetoric works. Maybe COVID will shake loose a little bit of that nonsense and we'll give facts and science a bit more prestige? Oh, for a silver-lining.3 points -

I'd say that you're pretty reasonable, both here and in my other conversations with you here, though I do disagree with you at times. There are a couple points that negatively effect me. 1. The economy. First of all, stocks: yes, the stock market has risen quite a bit up until this crisis. For Americans who own stock, namely, above average income and wealth, that is great, but for the average and below average income, stock gains mean next to nothing. Second, the ballooning deficit, which has doubled since 2016. That's all debt that I, as a citizen, have a share in and which will be paid through raises in my taxes, or will result in a catastrophic default on loans years from now. Moreover, the deficit was created in order to "stimulate growth" and while stocks have risen, the national debt-to-GDP ratio has grown since 2016, meaning we are actually going into debt faster than the economic boost is taking us out--and that's even without considering all of those stock gains are going to the richest people in the country, and also before taking into account the recent crisis. And as a citizen, I will be paying to dig us out of this hole. 2. Climate. It's hard to pin down specific cause-and-effects between policy and tangible climate trouble. On average, we will see more frequent natural disasters, which cause damage that I could be directly harmed from, or will contribute towards paying for as a taxpayer and as someone who pays into the insurance system. While Trump might not personally be increasing carbon emissions, the opportunity cost of not taking action, and generally lending a sympathetic ear to climate change deniers negatively impacts us all.2 points -
People who have voted for Trump have just done that. Not having voted for Hillary Clinton. Maybe, if the Democratic Party would have put up Bernie Sanders, people would have voted differently. The President of the U.S. has never been the nice person from around the corner, maybe Abraham Lincoln was and burdened by the cause of Civil War. Actually he was a great philosopher burdened with the decision to go to war against slavery. People have opinions. Just because some camerafans don´t support Trumps bending of truth, it does not mean they are holy spirits of endless virtue. My friend Glenn @mercer stands up for his decision during election. He does not promote Trump or defend him. He just stands up for his election choice. Leave it at that people or throw your disgusting 8k future video device and your other products of Chinese factory nightmare work in the ponds. Throw your stones against your garden fences and not at people. I don´t care for Trump but that does not make me a better person. We know the facts about him. No need to discuss it here over and over again. You are Spanish, shame on your Spanish empire, you are French, shame on your colonial empire, you are from Germany, shame on you for WWII. There is good and there is bad in people. Let´s not show our worst behaviour towards our dear friends here. And, let´s not act all that knowledgeable here about politics. Even some posts from knowledgeable people like Emanuel are so so in their rhetoric and contradictory approach.2 points

I know a lot of people think that exhibitions such as these are relics and that this might be their death knell but I'd be sad to see that happen as they are more than just people getting their grubby hands on new gear. Auto Focus Insanity

Reliable auto focus is obviously nice, but people really have become obnoxious about it. I see it on YouTube, where people regurgitate the same talking points (even GH5 users will say the auto focus is "awful" which is bullshit; its perfectly usable in a lot of situations), and I see it here when people beat the dead horse about auto focus for every camera that doesn't match Sony or Canon's performance. It goes without saying that we'd all love great auto focus performance in every camera. BUT I'll see people write off other cameras completely because the auto focus doesn't nail the completely unrealistic / unnatural tests where people pop in and out of the frame like morons on a camera that's completely stationary on a tripod or because it takes too long to focus on an object you've decided to place in front of the camera instead of using b-roll that will give people an even better view of the item. I've filmed hundreds of pro wrestling events on my GH5. Each one featured faster, more unpredictable action than any silly YouTube test. Do you know how many important shots I've missed because of its "awful" auto focus? None. Because, like with all cameras, you learn to overcome its shortcomings with use and experience. And in venues where lighting was poor, making the auto focus less reliable, I've gladly used manual focus because it's easier than ever to do, with all the focus assists most cameras have these days. I don't believe in making things harder than they have to be, but learning how to get the most out of your camera, including learning how to become competent with manual focusing, isn't a bad idea.2 points -

Before my three academic degrees and two postgraduation programs completed (I am going on my third one now) in two different major fields to also comprehend politics and economics as well, I was used to study American society since I have memory of myself. Avid reader here, no less viewer and observer. Let alone my own experience and contact with. Something a few Americans don't know is the fact the Republican party was used to be the progressist political party and Democrats were the most conservative wing of North America. U.S.A. was not born in the second half of XX century, not even in the previous one ; ) In any case, Trump is not even a good rep of them. Neither the idea of America, its values and principles. Take a look in someone who said Obama was is President but not Trump (example already referred a few posts back): John McCain. Not as producer. We're used to call it forfait, a flat rate. And not that it matters much, but you should know my best firnd is an evangelical and we have these go-rounds about stuff all the time. Usually ends about the same as it's going here too. I think another thing that has flown under the radar a bit is that hospitals don't just stop trying to treat other diseases while COVID19 is garnering all the attention. The question becomes how well an they do it? An at-risk person who then gets the run-of-the-mill flu is now at a heightened amount of danger because health services are stretched way too thin. So flu deaths can spike too. When the dust settles and we look back at 2020, COVID numbers might not be as high as we feared (let's hope) but meanwhile other numbers across the board could be rather depressing.1 point -

I'm not saying that everything Trump did was wrong simply because I don't agree with it. There are factual wrong decisions about climate change, about the coal industry, about the economic war with china and others that I don't agree with but don't benefit the majority of americans and the world. That's not a difference of opinion. And sure, we all disagree on several topics, but that's part of a democratic society. Yes, I believe that race was an important aspect about the disagreements with Obama but not all of it. He was elected two times. But the birth certificate proof and the argument of Obama being a muslim and that "he doesn't love our country" retoric is pretty dificult to defend. I agree with you that the us vs them attitude is moronic. I consider myself "agnostic" when it comes to politics and the lack of ability to join both sides and come to an agreement or compromise seems to be going away, which is undemocratic.1 point -
As I said, in my original post, I did not comment in this thread to argue politics. But I am sorry, your viewpoint of America, Americans and the American media is a little too myopic to resemble reality. Like Trump, or not, when half the nation supports him, you cannot say that he's done a lot wrong. You just disagree with it... it doesn't mean it's wrong. It's just a different opinion. And seriously, you're suggesting that an entire news organization didn't like President Obama because he is... "different." It is so simple and narrow minded to suggest that. Isn't it possible that a portion of the population just didn't agree with his policies and his race had nothing to do with it? But you're right, it is from both sides. There is a media outlet for whatever side of the spectrum you subscribe to and in most cases it has to do with ratings. This us versus them attitude about politics is so moronic. I prefer to believe that liberals and conservatives, democrats and republicans, libertarians and socialists all want the best, they just have different opinions on how to get there.1 point

If you recall, because of the Obama Care issue, a lot of conservatives were complaining that we were too aggressive regarding treatment. That it was a political ploy or a scare tactic. A flu like H1N1 has anti-virals to treat it. And it's the flu, you know? Humans walk around with some level of immunity because we've all had it. There's even a semi-effective vaccine. COVID-19? I think it really comes down to perceived competence and assurances, rightly or wrongly. That comes from the CDC, WHO, POTUS. You mentioned lower numbers of initial infection, but exponential infection rates don't really care about starting from a low value. It's an "It only takes one" sort of situation to get that ball rolling. As for swine flu, H1N1 has a much lower case fatality rate of 0.01-0.08%. It does not disproportionately infect adults older than 60 years. H1N1 was spread out across the age spectrum. Weirdly, the CDC's experience with H1N1 is one of the reasons scientists are more on edge now-a-days. Perhaps it was ignorance before, wisdom now. https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/10/covid-19-gets-bad-are-we-prepared-for-triage/ The pulmonary infection among the elderly is a big deal with COVID. I lost my Dad a year ago to a pulmonary fibrosis disease. Being in the ICU on a ventilator is serious business. It's not just a cold compress to the head and two Tylenol. So that's why there's alarm bells ringing with COVID. Experts are saying one thing and Donald is, well, just being himself and saying his typical random musings. We all know those musings are not fact based. So, no assurances. If Trump's opinion about COVID aligned with the scientific facts/assertions, sure there would be people still grousing about him, but that's not what's happening here. I'll tell you this, if I'm wrong and Donald Trump has somehow been right about all the random stuff he's said regarding COVID over the past 4 weeks, that'll be the most delicious crow I've eaten in a long time. In the meantime, we all know what he was saying about COVID before Friday. And many on the right were happy to be all jokey jokey about things. Now that's it's a national emergency his supporters have instantly pivoted to this being "serious" all of a sudden. So it's a bit maddening to those of us less forgiving of his tendencies. For instance, he had a conference call with the nation's governors this morning. Standard Trump things ensued. A transactional mindset was once again at the forefront. He told them to buy medical supplies themselves to get stuff faster. Afterwards the gov. of New York let loose with this: https://www.militarytimes.com/2020/03/16/ny-governor-calls-on-national-guard-army-corps-of-engineers-to-increase-role-in-coronavirus-response/ Take it as you will, but it's not just me, random guy on the internet, worried about Trump's capability to actually govern when it matters.1 point -
