  1. Last month I made a trip to Barcelona to film the Formula One circus in town for the pre-season test. This, it turned out would be the last time the 2020 F1 cars would run. When a McLaren team member tested positive for the virus at the first race in Australia, the race was called off. In a twist of fate I met McLaren CEO and team boss Zak Brown in track grandstand and watched the new car in action before crisis hit - now we might never know how fast the car was versus the likes of dominant Mercedes and Ferrari. So What Will You Do ?

So, radio stations all across Europe had a show of support and solidarity by all simultaneously playing "You'll Never Walk Alone" at 08:45 this morning. What a lovely gesture and sentiment and as a native of Liverpool and Liverpool FC fan this song has a very special meaning to me personally for multiple reasons. After the events of yesterday, I can't say the irony isn't lost on me though ! "You'll Be Arrested If You Don't Walk Alone And Quite Possibly Even If You Are Walking Alone (without a dog)" would have been more apt this morning https://www.nme.com/news/music/coronavirus-radio-stations-play-youll-never-walk-alone-at-same-time-in-show-of-solidarity-2632363

  6. There is a bit of overlap in terminology, so It's confusing. By "triple exposure video," I think that OP intended to mean "HDR video with three different exposure levels." Historically, the terms "double exposure" and "multiple exposure" meant exposing a single piece of emulsion in-camera, two or more times, to combine different images into something like this: With digital imaging, the multiple exposure process is a little different, because each exposure is a separate image and, thus, a separate file. Some digital cameras offer various ways to combine files and to create multiple exposure images, such as the Canon 5D mkIII and the Olympus OMD cameras. Undoubtedly, most who create "multiple exposure" images today are combining the images in post/editing. Magic Lantern offers two HDR video methods: Dual ISO (which you mentioned) and HDR video. I don't remember which method appeared first. ML's Dual ISO is a technique in which every other row of pixels is given a different exposure/gain. So, for example, all "even" rows are given a darker exposure while all "odd" rows are given a brighter exposure. The separate exposures are "blended" to make a single HDR image. This method can induce aliasing/moire. Our own @ZEEK made a video tutorial on setting up a Dual ISO raw video on a Canon EOSM: Incidentally, "dual ISO" has morphed into a term for more recent cameras featuring a sensor that can be "set" to one of two native ISOs. On the other hand, ML's HDR video simply gives a different exposure/gain to every other frame. For instance, every "odd" frame is given a darker exposure while every "even" frame is given a brighter exposure. This technique doesn't suffer the aliasing/moire of ML's Dual ISO, but I seem to recall reports of motion artifacts. By the way, prior to ML's Dual ISO, Panavision touted their Dyanmax HDR sensor which was claimed to feature three different, nested pixel arrays, with each array having a different exposure (somewhat similar to ML Dual ISO). Panavision has remained mysterious in regards to why they abandoned the idea (and subsequently sold their sensor foundry). It was done in 2010 with two Canon 5D mkII's and a beam splitter (probably the mirror type): Here is another early method from 2011 with a single Canon 7D and a post process: For three cameras, one could possibly use a prism beam splitter. If one could put the beam splitter and three shallow-mount cameras in a light-tight enclosure, it might be possible to use a single "taking" lens.

  7. I don't know how much longer I can survive here... All the camera stores are closed. Only the night before I saw some rare Canon FD lenses behind a shutter, and this was the tipping point. Got a Ryanair back last night. Barcelona is a truly wonderful place. In Barcelona people were acting sensibly, responsibly, in an adult manner. I am now in the UK. The place has gone completely to shit! So now my escape from doom to hell is complete, at least I'll have plenty of time to write that F1 / GFX 100 blog post, S1H review, @BTM_Pix secret projects and panic shopping. Thankfully the plane even had a pilot. At one point I thought I might have to fly it myself. At least I had plenty of leg room on board.

  8. A powerful and thoughtful post - The photographs and text combine to produce a vivid picture of the lockdown in Barcelona. The title of your piece recalled the Specials song 'Ghost Town', with its video that is very evocative in relation to our current situation: I do hope all goes well for you Andrew, and that before too long you are able to find a flight home. This is hard enough without having to cope with being outside your own home/community. I do think you've nailed on the head the key policy choices governments have to make (reflected in the different choices made by the UK and other countries). To lock down or not to lock down? If health services are being overwhelmed by the number of cases (as in Italy) then I'm not sure there's much of an alternative in the short-term. But the economic and social cost is very high. And as you rightly say, there's then the question of what happens when the lockdown is lifted - does the virus then re-establish itself and you're more or less back to square one? The UK government is taking what Sir Humphrey would I guess call a 'courageous' approach in looking at a different way forward. Only time and hindsight will illustrate whether it was wise or not, though I can't fault Boris Johnson for listening carefully to the evidence of his (clearly expert) scientists and doing his best to implement it (as of when I last looked at the news about 4/5 days ago - I'm trying to insulate myself from it for a while, having gathered enough evidence as to how things were unfolding to make my own decision about how to navigate through the coming weeks and months). I'm not exactly a fan of Mr Johnson, but we're seeing him trying his best to rise to the situation (at least in my interpretation, from what I'd seen so far). The contrast with President Trump is a stark one, and I can only applaud the humanity of your post Andrew in indicating the total unacceptability of Trump's cynical attempt to 'corner the market' for the exclusive use of the US only that new German coronavirus treatment. I have no doubt there will be millions of Americans shocked by the selfishness involved. I also think one of the positives that can emerge from this situation (and there will be such, I have no doubt) is that the world will start to come together again, and those politicians based on populist demagoguery will start to lose their attraction. Such is my hope anyway. And the humanity and trenchant criticisms of the 'America First' Trumpian approach by Andrew I can only echo whole-heartedly. I wish you all the best Andrew - I've never met you personally of course (our one encounter at a distance was me buying your Sony RX10 off you some years ago), but I like to think of you (and this whole forum) as a positive presence in my life. Your posting on this topic a further example of this, and an indication of how community can help us all find a way forward through these challenging times.

  9. In all seriousness I fully support the restrictions and I'm annoyed at myself for not knowing about today's addition to it. Particularly as this lunatic has now reset my own danger of exposure clock again when it was only a few days from running out by screaming in my face. The rage and hatred he had for me was incredible though as usually people only reach that point with me when we've been formally introduced at least Oh well, he'll have plenty of justification when true boredom sets in on day 13 and I fly my drone off the roof to pick up stray dog turds off the golf course and drop them all over his garden.

  10. This is available for free, new 3D LUT for BMPCC4K (inspired by the industry standard Arri - Rec709) The LUT is currently available for Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (BMPCC4K, BMPCC6K, orig. BMPCC) I've been bothering a lot of different LUTs for a long time... until I created my own http://tondadamborsky.cz/2020/03/19/lut-for-bmpcc4k/ BMPCC4K has warmer colors i recommend u bmpcc4k - WB set slightly to minus (-300,500) than other cameras or orig.Pocket (BMMCC) I hope, you will like it. I tried to keep the max dynamic range, and natural skin color.

  11. Nice to know what is coming out, but it does put a lot of potential upgrades on freeze knowing the R5, R6, and Komodo are on the horizon. Those three cameras alone (not to mention a Cinema EOS camera with RF Mount) are reason enough to invest in RF mount for the foreseeable future over L-Mount, E-Mount, MFT, etc. Hoping the R6 basically has the 1DX III specs, but without the 5.5k raw to get the price point down. - 10-bit 422 internal 4k up to 60fps - 10bit 422 internal 2k up to 120fps Add in IBIS, newer longer-lasting battery compared to EOS R, dual slots, and this would be an awesome camera. R5 will be for ruggedness, pro shooters, photographers who need 40 megapixels, and for those who need 8K, but the R6 may be the better video option for those who do mostly video. Will probably be better in low light and have no-crop in 4k, both things the R5 may struggle with a bit more. Despite my love for Panasonic's S1 and S1H, hard to argue with the RF Mount and once the R5, R6, and Komodo are announced, that's the direction I'll probably be going.

  14. The ALEV3 sensor has soul. (That is to say, an extremely expensive OLPF that smooths the image out really nicely. And nice noise texture. And low pixel density.) I agree that consumer/prosumer video cameras and hybrids are way way too sharp, which I think is what you're getting at. But it's a different market. FS7 etc. is more targeted toward sports and reality anyway. But Red's got their 6K S35 sensor and Arri is working on a 4K+ S35 sensor so I think everything is going to start looking like shit soon lol. Even with the Alexa LF and Alexa 65, you need old vintage glass to get a good look, whereas film and 2.8/3.2k Alexa look pretty good with Rokinons or CP2s.

  25. The Specials could provide the soundtrack for much of this situation really. Starts off being spread through the International Jet Set * No one was really paying it the attention it deserves because of being too busy (working for the) Rat Race and trying to survive in the Concrete Jungle. Now everyone is locked having to Do Nothing with a lot of people saying I Can't Stand It. And no doubt You're Wondering Now (what to do, now you know this is the end) of what once was and knowing its the Dawning Of A New Era. Whatever it brings, the lesson we should all heed when we get out is to make the most of life and Enjoy Yourself (Its later thank you think). * This song from 40 years ago features the horribly prescient lyric "Spread the disease, from the south China sea to the beach hotel Malibu"

  27. It's quite funny that the majority of lenses we own are at least 25 years old. No Sigma Arts, no Sony G-Masters. Good optics are truly timeless and often breathe some life into the soulless digital sensors. My plans haven't really changed since last year - I'm still waiting for Viltrox to release their f/1.4 primes trio for Fuji (that were supposed to ship last December, lol). Especially for 23/1.4, though I might give 56/1.4 some thought, too. And in the nearest future I'm going to get an Olympus OM 75-150/4 due to its parfocal abilities and the fact that it doesn't change its size during zooming. Might come in handy.

So What Will You Do ?

Hi all, Still waiting to see what my college is going to do with our lab-intensive FCPX class (I could do my assignments from home but I fear that the majority of my fellow students need to do their homework on campus). In the meantime, just acquired a colorimeter and will be working on finally getting my monitors properly calibrated. Also looking to do color-correction testing on my cameras using the X-Rite Video ColorChecker that came with the kit. Continuing pre-assignment work on my student project and preparing my shotlist along with a variety of scripting ideas (choices) I've worked out for the footage. Other than that, we're keeping up on our antivirals (Garlic, Ginger, Oregano and Turmeric) along with some serious anti-oxidant dosing (gotta love that Vitamin-C) and keeping tabs on my immune-compromised at-risk family members. Relieved (as much as is possible with this situation) that the ECDC makes note that part of their "Discharge Criteria" is a "Serology: appearance of specific IgG when an appropriate serological test is available." test which indicates that a healthy immune system can mount a proper defense... Discharge criteria for confirmed COVID-19 cases - COVID-19-Discharge-criteria.pdf: https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/sites/default/files/documents/COVID-19-Discharge-criteria.pdf ...all the more important that we all do our part and protect the elderly and those with pre-existing immune-compromising health conditions so as to not overwhelm our health care systems, but, more importantly, to keep the at-risk out of harm's way. Of gravest concern (and what gives me nightmares most) is the lack of proper facilities globally to deal with a >1% CFR (mortality rate), which would mean...for an unchecked spread that for every 100,000,000 million people infected there would be 1,000,000 dead. Case-in-point, here in the U.S., we are woefully under-prepared for anything of that magnitude with "96,596 ICU beds" within our system currently available (as reported today by The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) here)... SCCM | United States Resource Availability for COVID-19: https://www.sccm.org/Blog/March-2020/United-States-Resource-Availability-for-COVID-19 Please stay healthy and take care, one and all, and do what you can to help protect the at-risk population from falling victim to this virus. Peace, Jimmy G

    Lens owning plans for 2020

i do envy your L series canon lenses.😉 my plans tend to fluctuate abit depending on my mood. Which might be an over dramatization, but you get the idea. If i had the money i'd be leaning towards the sirui anamorphic for the sheer convenience. But i have the elmoscope type 1 already, so it probably makes more sense to get a fvd for it. i'm also interested in getting a wider faster lens. Trying to keep it in the family the pentax m42 35mm f2 seems to be a reasonable price on ebay, but the aus dollar has taken another tumble. If i didn't keep it in the family there's a lot more options to go wider and much faster however the cost seems to escalate rather rapidly. With everything up in the air with corona virus and the aussie dollar sitting at the bottom of the Mariana trench i doubt i'll buy anything soon unless the lens market on ebay goes into freefall 🙄

So What Will You Do ?

For anyone in a country that isn't locked down, you'll love Day 6. Out on a brief exercise walk with my other half this evening (which we have been doing 3 times a day around our little empty housing complex ) we fell foul of the newly introduced additional restriction today of not walking with anyone else. On the surface it does seem a bit of a mad one for couples who are living together in isolation anyway but due to us being in isolation we didn't get informed about it directly as we would have been by the administrators of the community. So, if we'd known about it, we'd have complied. Simple as that and no problem to us because due to our Japan trip we've been practising COVID-19 awareness before it became fashionable But hey, even though we didn't know about it, ignorance is no defence so hands up and we'd take what was coming from the Police.... Except this wasn't the Police it was another resident conducting some sort of paramilitary neighbourhood watch scheme. After shouting at us about whether the security company who patrol the estate had told us about the new restrictions we said no and remarked, as you do, that it seemed daft considering we lived together but were shrugging and turning round to go home. And then it escalated beyond all reason. I have a bit of a thing where if I'm in the wrong then I have no problem with being told. You can even re-iterate what I've done wrong and I'll go along with it. But its the third time that pushes my buttons. You know the third one don't you? The one when someone is talking to you like you are a child or an idiot? Anyway, I politely(ish) informed him that I understood it the first time and the second time and there was no need to fucking repeat it again. Of course the farce of this is that due to isolation, this whole exchange was being shouted across a road at each other Anyway, he gets it into his head that I'm an arrogant prick (I'll plead the 5th on that) because I'm utterly non-plussed by his attempts to intimidate me. That wasn't because of some sort of hardman deal just that it was such an unlikely turn of events that I wasn't really reacting beyond thinking he was a complete tit. As I crossed to the middle of the empty road to re-iterate that I wasn't going to be receptive to any of the threats or abuse, he reveals the concealed Nikon DSLR to try and takes a sly pictures of us, presumably to try and "non singular walking" shame us on Facebook. Recognising that it was an utterly futile exercise to engage any further, we started to head back the 300 metres to our apartment when the frothing lunatic appears (breaking his own isolation no less) claiming that we must stop where we are to await arrest by the Police and he will personally ensure we are both fined €600 each. He had undoubtedly completely and utterly lost his mind so I told the other half to start walking back to the apartment. I started walking towards him to try give him some pause about whether he needed to dial this down because this particular arrogant prick wasn't buying it and also to put a bigger gap between him and my missus in case he did act on it. (Spoiler alert, I wasn't fully buying it but had put down a hefty deposit on it because I could see he had become unhinged, was twice my size but I'd jumped off the diving board at this point ) Plus, there was no way I was going to turn my back on him at this point ! Anyway, he whips out the phone this time to video me and then says I have to remain where I am because now he was going to arrest me I think I may have laughed at this point which sent his rage-o-meter off the charts and he was bellowing me at a distance of about 40cm. Oh dear. The self styled Isolation Warrior of Murcia had saved his community from the threat of two of its residents walking together and was now firing his frothy rage fuelled spittle all over one of them. Of course, I pointed this irony out to the camera on the video he was still recording of me and it was abruptly stopped to be replaced with more threats of physical violence at an SPL level that even AC/DC might deem to be a bit on the high side. I backed away from him slowly at this point and then turned and walked back slowly to make sure that my missus was back in the apartment in case he came after me again. Even walking slowly was an act of arrogance apparently which got his motor running again. So I sit here patiently awaiting the arrival of the Guardia Civil to take all my toilet roll money (I hope @Grimor can put in a word for me with the authorities in case they cart me away) or perhaps this lunatic might just settle for sending his dog around to perform a canine arrest on me. Of all the insults he brought forth on me, I think the worst one was him taking pictures of me with such a shitty zoom kit lens on that Nikon. From the moment I saw that, he had no chance of taking the high ground Oh and for context, this confrontation was between two middle aged British men in Spain proving that, even when we are in full lockdown isolation , we can always find new ways to lower the tone.

  34. Crazy times! Boarders being closed, countries and cities being in lockdown, who could´ve expected this when this year started?! Here are some impressions from Munich, near the train station. Usually really crowded, almost at any time of the day. These days, people doing home office don´t have to commute to their workplace, staying at home anyway. Unfortunately in the afternoon some places here get quite crowded with people meeting to chat, to drink or eat something together. So a lockdown for the city of munich has already been discussed.

  35. Haven't searched too hard for bargain prices, but don't you still need a SDI recorder to capture raw? Once you get there, you're in the neighborhood (or do you spell it neighhbourhood?) of a E2-S6 with the E-ND mount. Just saying there are others in the same price bracket. Not to go OT, but I did see a DPAF c100 for $600 USD, which seems insane. Chris Your stuff is incredibly well done, you've really found your niche. Size-wise the FS5 is pretty much perfect for a run and gun camcorder, its not much bigger than a DSLR with everything stripped off it. Chris

So..... About the original point of this thread then. Has anyone got up to anything interesting yet whilst in isolation that they can share with the group? Yesterday I posted this live scene from my workbench and I'm pleased to share with you all the outcome of what was going on in it. With having that ability to concentrate fully on a project that only fully being in isolation can bring, I have completed eating both bars of chocolate.

So workflow for me it will be super easy, no time in transcoding through other programs etc.. Really impressed by how quick Blackmagic implemented it! Btw I have the studio (paid) version of Resolve so not sure it works on the free but also the free is limited to 4k timeline too so I think the one time 300$ are well invested.

  45. No worries. Sometimes I wonder if ZachGoodwin is a real boy or a character someone has created. With that said, I'll play along... I think the point of the "hometown" documentary was supposed to be a simple assignment to get you working on a quick and small film. So, I wouldn't worry too much about the demise of the project. But if there is a business or even an interesting person that would allow you to make a film about them and it intrigues you, then go for it. I think the greater point you need to think about is that a filmmaker needs a film to make to be a filmmaker. I always thought you wanted to be a narrative filmmaker, so why not spend your time making 60 second short films? Write it, cast it, shoot it and edit it. Then wash, rinse, repeat. Good luck.
