  1. Looking at recent posts objectively, it is always the same users who end a perfectly good discussion on this forum with toxic bullshit. I am coming after you. It is a cull. It isn't about politics. It's about values! To protect a community I love... I have no choice. To be clear, it is none of my business which way you vote. What matters is behaviour, character, values. If you've been a good contributor here and kind to people you get to stay. If not, then you are going to be asked to leave and I will pursue people who return under a different name. This is purely because there are now far too many posts being trashed and too much arguing driven by people with the wrong values which I despise. I am going to use this week to draw up a list of people who strongly align themselves with Trump's politics of America First. And I will be getting rid of the lot of you. Yes you can say it's a political purge but I prefer to think of it as purely about values and about protecting users who DO contribute positively to the forum. If these idiots are allowed to get away with bringing Trump idolising bullshit into this community then all our work will be for nothing and Russia with their fake-user farms will have won too, because I am 99% sure at least a few of the idiots are completely made-up shill users whose role is to divide us politically and weaken our online communities. At a time when we must pull together as a camera-community, as filmmaking industry, even as a country, indeed as a world - to get through tough economic times ahead - dumb arguments which ignore factual data are a waste of time. What has happened to the world in recent weeks is stressful enough and I personally do not need to hear from certain people in every thread. I will not be providing a platform for Red cap wearing idiots who haven't contributed a single shot or image to this forum. I get that EOSHD has a big US readership, in fact the US contribution to my site is the largest in the world and I want to keep as many of you as possible and not lose any friends who just happen to disagree with me on politics. But if you are going to be a shill for Trump's politics or somebody who is a complete shit-stirrer and troll, then I will no longer be turning a blind eye to it and the cull starts now... Have fun on your way out.

  2. In the midst of the most impactful global event since WWII, what exactly should anyone here expect to happen? Our careers are tied up in this mess. When people in power make things messier, it matters. Also curious that an argument you're making is essentially telling people that trying to be informed is a big problem. Ignorance is hardly an effective refuge at this time. I wish people were more informed, not less informed. It could have saved us weeks of inaction. But you did say "turn off the news" which implies television media, and yes, that's pretty much nonsense. Are you watching FNC much? They've been on the "gosh, this is serious" side of things for only about a week. Coincidentally, someone named Donald has been as well. Coincidentally again, some FNC talking head made the same complaint you made about "the media" last night, criticized Dr. Fauci in the process, and then DT hit caps lock while repeating the same sentiment online. And here we are mentioning that same sentiment in a camera forum the next day. Checks and balances indeed.

  3. I have to say that this is one of the most cynical and opportunistic threads that I've ever seen on here and I find it morally ambiguous at best. I will of course be checking it regularly to observe the level of decline in public spirit during these dark days so if any of you ghouls see a Leica X Vario in reasonable condition anywhere around or below £500 during these repugnant trawls please make sure you post it here

  4. its silly to say its the governments fault, to hold them accountable for every little thing. People have brains, its up to people to exercise them and not require the government to do all the thinking for them. Regardless of which party is in power and where, none have been preparing for a pandemic. We have had sars, mers, bird flu, swine influenza, ebola outbreaks, half a dozen movies on various contagions, and the zombie apocalypse (er..... another movie reference ) yet no one has prepared. Most likely because there's like a 1% chance of an outbreak considering everything else thats been going on in the world. Yet it looks like someone just rolled a 1. As i see it, if your not a Christian the best anyone can do is ride it out, otherwise start praying if you haven't already. Now i know god isn't a popular topic but i think we should keep all options on the table 😉 feel free to flame away i can handle it. i do have one other issue and i dont really want to appear as i'm picking on you mr reid, however i'm a bit disappointed that you chose to lock kyes screw buying new cameras thread, rather than shift it to the lenses forum, i feel kye put a fair bit of effort into that thread not to mention others contributions and its a bit disheartening to see it locked away.

  5. The world is in a really dark place at the moment, but I think we need some hope. Let's assume by July or August, we'll be through the worst of it and have a Canon EOS R5 to play with. Maybe Fuji will surprise us with an X-H2 by then and Sony with an A7S III. And hopefully some sport will be back on as well. I was going to film some of it! So I think we should have one thread for the virus crisis, where we share tips about staying safe, hygienic, etc. and are free to discuss our fears too. Many will lose their income streams and they will need a place to talk and get help. But I think my role now is to boost the camera side of the forum, get some camera related blogs out and stop my own coronavirus worries taking over from that. It's very hard to turn off the news when you have loved-ones in high risk groups and places. I will now try to do that and get back down to business. Good luck to all who are trying to stay positive and trying to work without so much negative distraction in the world. I salute you. 👍

  8. But is that a true increase in cases, or is it just because they're finally testing for them now? The government needs to not interfere with price signals, so that prices are free to float for supply to match demand. Higher prices can lead to great supply coming online, for instance, vodka distilleries making hand sanitisers: https://thespinoff.co.nz/food/22-03-2020/from-vodka-to-hand-sanitiser-boutique-distilleries-switch-up-to-tackle-covid-19/

  9. I can only comment from when I was there but from the moment we stepped off the plane on the way in to the moment we got on the plane home ten days later, every single worker in every single establishment from the airport to restaurants to shops to the railways was wearing a mask. As per the picture I took above, hand santiser was at the entrance/exit to almost every establishment we went to. All events that we were set to go to in Tokyo (the primary one being the CP+ photo show) were cancelled from gigs to sporting events as well as exhibitions/museums and pretty much any place with large enclosed gatherings such as the Skytree etc were closed. When we checked into the hotel, we had our temperature taken, the place was plastered with information in numerous languages and there were unlimited facemasks handed out at reception free of charge as well as the sanitiser outside and inside every elevator. I'd estimate that easily 85-90% of the local population were wearing masks and this rose to more or less 100% on the subway. When we initially arrived, I'd say that probably 75% of western visitors were wearing masks as well but about three days after we arrived this dropped very dramatically over a two day period and was more like 20% or even less by the time we left. I don't think this was through 'concern fatigue' or whatever you want to classify it but was more linked to reports I'd seen in the western media including from the UK government pretty much saying that masks were useless which presumably were then made into concise little info pictures and circulated on social media. It was like every single one of these people had seen this pop up on their social media on the same evening and abandoned their masks immediately. To say I was annoyed about it would be an understatement not least because even in the spirit of unity and support with the local people you'd think people would carry on wearing them but alas not. So in terms of the sort of lockdowns we have in the west now, there was nothing like that at all but what there was in abundance was the government taking decisive action to limit communal gathering opportunities (and closing schools) and the whole population supporting the effort to maintain distance where possible without totally stopping day to day life and all taking responsibility to take the prescribed precautions to avoid contaminating themselves and others. Companies also introduced home working but also slightly staggered shifts to ease the numbers travelling at peak periods. The staggering thing is the low infection rate in Tokyo considering how this virus is spreading everywhere else. Just the 8.5 million subway rides alone that are taken every day in Tokyo would lead you to predict a significantly higher number of cases than the 136 that they have, particularly considering how much longer they have been exposed to the virus there. For context, a single church in a small town in the UK appears to have emerged as a hotspot with around 15% of the same number as the whole of Tokyo has. By the way, the contrast when we arrived back at Madrid airport was stark and very, very frightening where absolutely NO ONE in the airport either official or member of the public was wearing a mask apart from us or employing any kind of distancing. In point of fact up until the point we got locked down here in Spain over a week ago, the only people we saw wearing a mask was each other. As odd as it may seem, that kind of gives me some hope in a way because it can explain the runaway nature of it here versus Japan and how it was contained there as either Japan is lying about its figures or that bouquet of measures and a public that bought into it from day one has proven to be a very effective balance between containment and total reactive lockdown. OK, it would mean that we have missed the boat in terms of doing it by consent if you like but it does offer hope that it can be contained. Because if the reason it has been arrested in Japan isn't due to the actions they took then it throws up something that I don't want to even consider which is that the virus has mutated somehow when it has reached Europe and we are facing something different and, looking at the figures, far worse.

  10. Dear filmmakers of EOSHD! Since many of us are advised to #staythefuckhome and, thanks to that, we found ourselves having plenty of free time, I humbly announce a new film challenge, as proposed by @sanveer and @BTM_Pix: One Single Room In Your House | Film Challenge. I, personally, find the rules suggested by @sanveer very applicable, would you agree with me? Here they are: The only thing I'd add (and take it more as advice, not a rule per se) is: KEEP IT (SHORT AND) SIMPLE aka KISS 😘 Can we count on your support, @Andrew Reid? A blog post of some sort? Who's in?

  11. There is a slow burning realisation and awakening in the UK and Europe (it will come to the US soon) that we have fucked up. Big time. In Japan and Taiwan, simple early hygiene measures avoided a lockdown or economic crash. Thousands of jobs saved, but more importantly thousands of lives saved from the outset. In January, the Japanese started to test in-depth for coronavirus and did case by case contact tracing and isolation. The public did their bit by wearing masks en-masse in public and using hand sanitiser. @BTM_Pix points out that most if not all shops had hand sanitiser on the entrance so people didn't unwittingly spread by handling goods. At the same time, here in the UK our government did nothing. Business as normal. In February our crackpot chief advisor started to float the theory of herd immunity, and amazingly the chief scientists and government itself went for this strategy straight off the bat, as the first cases reached the UK. When the scientists ran the numbers, it wasn't until over a month later... It would result in 2 million dead people, minimum. The chief advisor Dominic Cummings is rumoured to have been advocating for the death of 2 million people as late as February 28th. "At one private event at the end of February, Cummings outlined then government’s strategy at the time in a way that was summarised by some present as “herd immunity, protect the economy, and if that means some pensioners die, too bad.” Meanwhile in Japan and Taiwan, the simple hygiene measures were leaving some of the most densely populated cities on Earth virtually untouched by the epidemic. But for Italy things were rapidly going downhill. Another government who sat on their hands in January and February. Italy's terrifying unfolding tragedy is a glimpse into the future for all of us... Just 2-4 weeks into the future. In Italy, 20-30% of intensive care patients are aged 20-40. People with underlying health or lung problems are at great risk even if they're young. Hospitals and health systems will collapse. The sudden lockdowns required, will crash the economy, creating joblessness, government debt and hardship on a scale never seen before in modern times. Meanwhile Japan remains open for business. Sure, with some major events cancelled and the Olympics in doubt... But over in China, they are already going back to work. Taiwan has some of the fewest cases and deaths per 100,000 people in the world, despite being on the doorstep of China. Hong Kong too. In the West this is the biggest government manslaughter unfolding, that has ever been seen in our lives. Italy, Spain, Germany, UK, US, we are all going to face utter darkness. Please takes step to protect yourselves from the government's handling of this in the critical early stages. It is going to get out of control.

  16. The change in CEO is smoking gun for me. You do not sack your CEO if you just came up with a Coronavirus vaccine. You sack your CEO if he tried to take it to the US in informal (possibly even corrupt) exclusivity deal, and in process piss everyone off in your home country including the government.

  17. Here in Italy the new public enemy number 1 are people jogging outside, even if alone, even if in a mountain path, seen as the new plague spreaders, as if just by the fact of going out of a building you become magically infected by THE sickness: the virus will see you and will instantly put you into an intensive care unit. This is what concerns me here in France. We are not quite there yet, at least not officially. Yes, some could argue, "big deal, so you fitness freaks can't do your usual thing, get over it", but actually some restrictions are pretty stoopid. Solo running in the fresh area with no one around. Yup, that's going to make the situation worse. Not. Someone living in an apartment with a dog that needs to be walked can't be forced to shit on the kitchen floor? (That's the dog not the owner). They need to get out and providing they do so sensibly and not with other people... common sense needs to be applied. I'm lucky that my house is in one of the least most densely populated departements in France and our house is on 2.5 acres of land. We are surrounded by vineyards and agricultural land but our mayor just issued a directive that has now banned any/all activity on the green lane, a former railway line over 20 km long. People can go for their walk in the town but no, not on the green lane as unseen, they may gossip in groups and touch and... If people are going to do that, they are going to do that and they are stupid and ignorant, but wholesale smacking down on everyone supposedly for the greater good is too far. And then some folks are just nuts... I was walking the dog the other day when a woman drove past me and in usual French style, skimmed me by mere inches (sorry, but they do this, - can't ever cross that white line in the centre of the road unless it's passing every single vehicle in front of them before immediately turning at the next junction. Without indicating.)...wearing a face mask (in her own car, alone!)...with all the windows down! And that isn't even the most ridiculous part which is she actually leaned away from me in her seat and turned her head away as she passed me at about 50 kph! Just imagine if I'd coughed in her direction and my cough beat her 50 kph side draft and entered her vehicle through one of her 4 open windows... She'd have been dead within the week, no question so why take the risk. In fact she was very sensible. Re. the news. I think you can't avoid it. Moderation and not getting obsessed with it is the thing. I think it's important to be aware of any situation so you can either comply with directives (even if it's to keep off the green lane) or simply make your own common sense decisions. It's all a load of shit though. Weirdly, despite having zero income and fairly confident the industry is pretty fucked for the forseeable future, I am strangely calm about it and have been practising social distancing and self-isolating much of my life out of choice so no big hardship!

  19. Seeing as I acquired a Sony CineAlta 50mm T2 PL lens recently, would be quite nice to get a few more, such as specifically the 20mm and 35mm (or any of them really). However, with the economic recession we're now, and the collapse of the NZ Dollar, I highly doubt I'll be doing any of that in 2020. Might even go in the opposite direction, and reduce my lens collection instead of increasing it, perhaps get rid of my Rokinons. In a dream dream world I'd like the Fujinon 18-55 and 50-135 T2.9 zooms, and the new Sirui / Vazen anamorphic lenses. Heck, why not the DZOFilm or Laowa OOOM 25-100 T2.9 zoom lenses too? Ha! Of course these entire last paragraph is completely hallucinogenic pipe dreams.

  21. Strikes me as a cover-up by Curevac "Adding to the confusion, the company is now on its third CEO within the past seven days. The first CEO, Daniel Menichella, attended a March 2 White House meeting of pharmaceutical executives. Without CureVac giving a reason at the time, he left the company, effective immediately, on March 11." The German government is probably very unhappy that the company was even so much as entertaining the idea of Trump's offer. There will be other companies in Europe developing solutions. I am sure the German government will be on the phone to them instead in the coming weeks. I see nothing so far to suggest that the story isn't true. I think Trump and CureVac did try to get into an exclusive bed together, with a mattress made entirely of dollar notes, and pillows stuffed with the ashes of a million dead Europeans.

  22. No scientists can truly say but the common sense aspect is undeniable. If 90%+ of the population are wearing masks and 100% of those with a cough, then you prevent the spread. If you have hand sanitiser at every public space, again you prevent the spread. Ask yourself why this isn't the situation in the US and Europe. No preparedness, no plan, no clue. Instead, a risk that millions could die and a brutal economic collapse. There is no sugaring it. This MAY happen, and all because of our governments.

  26. For many of us here in the United States, it's been, "Oh man, it's going to be so much worse." Which is why the dismissal of the threat has been so frustrating. Even the rhetorical push back, the cruel jokes, or the claim it was all some sort of hoax was, sad to say, completely expected. This is who we are. Which makes things especially scary when one starts to think about the virus mutating and causing contagion wave#2.

  28. Yes of course, Im just tryingt o point out how overplayed and inaccurate that talking point is. Here in the US we have Trump who almost certainly initially downplayed the Coronavirus because of the threat imposed to his reelection and fired the officials responsible for responding to events like these months prior. And we also have officials who were aware of the threat but did nothing except sell their stocks. And only on Friday was there a coordinated response to manufacture supplies.

  29. Yes exactly. 3 weeks and army is not urgently distributing supplies of basic cheap essentials in the fight agains the virus. It's criminal negligence again. And we as the citizens will make sure we hold these governments to account if our loved ones die. We will not stay quiet on this. And not just train carriages full of people spreading it but offices... Vulnerable age groups or people with underlying lung conditions exposed to large groups of younger workers who don't give a shit. Money first, all the fucking time. The drugs companies racing to be the first to make mega profits from at-home testing kits, which if we all had NOW, would stop the virus in its tracks and isolate the right people, preventing a full on lock down and economic warfare. Money first. American first. Boris, Cummings, Gove... criminal negligence. It's all going to end in a shitshow. You heard it here first.

  31. I don't need a background in epidemiology to understand what is happening. You just need eyes and to be able to logically deduce more than 1 step ahead (which rules out at least 50% of the British public) I'll explain why it's government manslaughter and negligence, very clearly. Science community has been warning about the threat of a pandemic for decades. SARS hit Asia and governments there did the responsible thing to wake the fuck up...Whilst ours pondered and basically sat on their hands with other issues taking priority... like who appeals to the public the most in our daily gameshow political shitshow. They were thinking it can't happen here... The scientific data was telling them otherwise. Bill Gates told them otherwise, very clearly. Logic tells them otherwise. The millions of flights and international travel increase the spread of a virus so that it's a pandemic. Are you saying I need to have a background in virology to understand this? Even school kids know this. The UK government has been proved by the events of this month to have had zero preparedness for a pandemic. - A lack of political recognition of the seriousness of what was unfolding in January - Insufficient testing capacity - Insufficient protection of front-line health workers, doctors and staff - Insufficient supplies of hand sanitiser and masks... Basic, cheap stuff. - A lack of political urgency to put any preparedness plans into action in January (oh and they didn't have any plan anyway) - Poor case isolation and low testing numbers especially early on at critical stage of the spread - Underfunded health system and not supporting the staff - Negligently informing the public I'll give you two examples of that last point which is key. On his Japan trip, @BTM_Pix noticed the Brit tourists suddenly abandon their masks after Boris said they were ineffectual. Nothing sums this crisis up better. People cannot take seriously what they don't understand or are poorly advised about. People don't understand the role of the masks to stop the spread of the virus. They are not there to protect you from infection. They exist to stop YOU passing the virus onto somebody else, if you cough, sneeze, it catches burst of aerosols, and it stops your hands from coming into contact with your mouth, nose or catching the cough. In the UK we catch our coughs and sneezes with our bare hands and then put our hands on shopping and goods in the supermarket. It stays there for up to 72 hours before somebody else picks up the same item and then touches their own mouths at some point, then the trouble happens especially if they are elderly or have underlying health conditions. It is the government's responsibility to make us understand this but in actual fact their "scientific" advise is still to catch your coughs and sneezes with your bare hands. Great way to spread it onto surfaces in public, like in a packed metro carriage and spread it to a 100 others. That's what the Japanese and Taiwanese understand in their densely populated cities. The British don't. We do not have a culture of understanding anything much as a collective. We don't have a culture of wearing masks when we have a cold, let alone during a pandemic. This has to change ASAP... Like tomorrow... It may already be too late, and certainly for the economy and for people who have died so far it's too late. Everyone has to wear one in public to stop the spread. It's simply no good just 20% of the public wearing them, or scarfs or buckets or whatever in a misguided belief they are a barrier to the virus entering your body. Army should be on the streets handing them out. Basic stuff like soap is equally important and disinfecting common public spaces. In Asia they have been disinfecting public transport on daily basis, cleaning businesses and offices like the plague. We are not doing that here. We are just not used to it. We don't have a warm climate in England with a lot of bacteria. The virus is not the same as bacteria but is removed by similar deep cleans, so why aren't we doing them? So yes, the government had all this info, like the lay man did, like the bloke who runs EOSHD did, it's not even hard to understand... And yes, they failed to act or be prepared which makes them criminally negligent and responsible for the manslaughter of potentially 2 million people in the UK alone.

  32. Death rate is just a ratio and it seems that Germany conducted a lot of testing early on which might explain the issue (same thing in Korea). Also, it is still very early to tell at this point. https://www.ft.com/content/c0755b30-69bb-11ea-800d-da70cff6e4d3

  33. Andrew, I like your camera expertise but I don't know about your background in virology and epidemiology... Be careful with that type of statement (manslaughter, incompetence, etc.). While I agree that the heard immunity in UK seems to be utter BS, I would be more careful with the conclusion and prospective at this point. This is a very complex issue that no government ever faced before. It seems that Taiwan and Singapore were better prepared due to the lessons learned during the first SARS pandemic in 2003. As for Japan, this is a bit early to tell at this point, there are many factors at play such as: - The rate of testing (can't find stuff that you are not looking for) - Government response - Logistic and supply chain - Public behavior and social acceptance of the rules (very strong in Asia) - State and quality of the health care system (USA...) - Health of the population - Demographic (eg. Italy and Japan are among have the oldest population in the world) Back during the H1N1 flu outbreak in 2009, the french minister of health ordered massive amount of vaccines and masks that cost billions. Eventually, it proved useless and the government was mocked. It created a little political scandal at the time. The minister was even brought to court by some doctors who said the vaccine was dangerous. People are going to complain no matter what...

I am a bit combustable and face has gone red. That's what happens I guess when you have 150 laps each from 22 cars circling you for 3 days. The GFX 100 is worth its weight in repeat lens purchases. 41. I just hope here in the UK that an absolute lock down is announced either today or tomorrow - I do understand that laws have to be passed & as usual politics sometimes gets in the way, but it needs to be done now as people can't be trusted. They've asked us nicely (very British), but pictures of packed shopping spaces, parks & tubes/subways just speaks volumes of our modern times! I'm both lucky & unlucky - I took a part-time job as I decided that the media was becoming a lost cause to me. Unfortunately I'm a key worker & after my 2 weeks annual leave runs out (booked a month ago by some miracle), I will have to go back to work. My fear is that whilst I've been really careful, others have carried on as if its no big deal (quite possibly spreading the virus around like wild fire) & then I have to go back out into the outside world to try to help people! Still no distancing in supermarkets & I keep walking, as pound signs seem to be more important than safety - especially for their workers! Hopefully a full lock down will take place & it will be safe for me to go to/from work each day, but will it? I will have to use public transport, but have the companies cleaned the buses (probably not) or will there be any buses running (i hope so as I don't fancy the 1hr 30min walk each way)? But the icing on the cake was my workplace - no hand sanitizer made available & a really shocking lack of any plan put into place to help us or keep us safe. If someone in the building, where I work, gets the virus, it will knock us all out (colds spread at work like you wouldn't believe) & we are a vital service!!! Hindsight is a great thing, but doesn't help anyone or thing right now! What we really need is for sensible people to keep spreading the word to stay in & only go out if you absolutely have to. But most importantly, if you do go out, keep your distance! Good luck & stay safe everyone

  42. New Yorker is a Left Biased magazine, you can not expect objectiveness from a media like that, obviously nobody except Left Biased people will believe on it. https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/new-yorker/
