Idolise Trump? Goodbye!
Orangenz and 8 others reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
If the EOSHD site was solely about cameras, and that was it, full stop, then I say a ban on politics is fine. However, Andrew's site has always been a place that is non-corporate and "unsterile," if you will. He's not afraid to drop his opinion and that's why I stick around. If I want bland regurgitated information, there's plenty of on-line options for that. Crossing the line is something all of us but the most rhetorically disciplined have been close to doing, but erring on the side of staying respectable isn't too hard to do. And, ultimately, EOSHD is a site that prioritizes gear, but also exists as a refuge for aspiring filmmakers. Filmmakers should have passion. Otherwise, what are we? Just content creators? That's okay for some I guess, but standing for one's ideals with integrity and rationality should be a filmmaker's or artist's ethos. One of the most influential people in my life was a high school teacher that was willing to engage us students. He would talk about the world and encourage us to participate in it as productive citizens. His lectures were fascinating revelations about his value system and why it worked. Often times we would stray from that semester's syllabus and spend the whole hour just chatting about ideas. We were a room of equals simply by the way he behaved and respected us, a bunch of dumb high-schoolers that really didn't deserve such treatment... but there he was giving us agency when every one else in the system, it seemed, wanted to make sure we stayed in our place. Funny thing was, he was an auto-shop teacher. The other funny thing was that he was a staunch conservative. An 'all-in' Reaganite; can't even count how many times he went on about Thatcher either, to give you an idea. I thought his ideas about society we're complete and utter rubbish. Still do. But the fact that he didn't beat me down with ad-hominem attacks because I disagreed with him, and encouraged me to debate made him the best teacher I ever had. I still can't do a valve job properly and fix a timing chain, but he let me realize how important it was to have integrity, a slightly more important lesson. Meanwhile I had a liberal English teacher so far up her own ass you couldn't say one thing to her sideways without her feeling insulted. And she was teaching writing for god's sakes! So there you go. My anecdotal response. Whoopie-de-doo. Bottom line, conservatives ain't all bad, but some are. Liberals ain't all bad, but some are. Be kind and try to ignore the true jerks that just don't want to respect you.9 points -

This is quite an interesting insight into the sort of shit that walks amongst us all on any form of internet communication platform. Not so long ago, the notion of hordes of actual humans sat in sheds somewhere pushing agendas for whoever it was hiring them seemed plausible but still a bit fanciful to me but no more and at first glance this appears to be one caught with their pants down. But after selecting Sandy28334041's profile and having a look at their tweets (all replies to other tweets of course not a single original one which does scream Troll as well as the username obviously) I have to say that it could be legitimate because the replies are in context and there is a degree of consistency to their agenda so, honestly, I just couldn't tell you definitively one way or the other. And I think that is the problem now in trying to establish if an account is a professional troll or not because they are getting better at appearing to be real people while some real people are simultaneously getting "better" at appearing to be a professional troll.2 points -

1. Nationalism in all forms sucks. 2. I think everyone has their own reasons for why they'll take a break from posting here. I'm sure many of those mentioned will show up again. People get busy, burned out, etc. 3. Re: Trump, it's becoming increasingly hard to look past people's continued support for him. Part of it is partisanship, which is toxic in its own right, but if you can't see the racism, the bigotry, the cronyism, the greed, the lack of human decency, etc. Or, worse, look beyond all that to find the "positives" about him, what is one supposed to do in response? Ultimately it's depressing that the paradigm has shifted so much when it comes to political discourse. The bar has been lowered so much that to partake in the discussion at all means you're probably going to get covered in human feces. COVID-19 will come and go, but that unfortunately is here to stay for the foreseeable future.2 points -

Maybe you have better things to do Cinegain than make a list of my friends and imply everyone left because of a disagreement with me over politics. Many of those you mention are close friends of mine and still are. Just because they haven't got time to engage with idiots like you, doesn't mean to say they no longer read the blog. Ed David, Christina Ava, Volker, JB, Andy Lee, Neumann Films, JG Harding, Brian Caldwell, Luca Butera, all those are friends but they can't be around a forum every day for 5 years straight. Some of them will have other things going on in their lives. I'd be more than happy to see Mattias post more but he has a busy YouTube channel now that takes a lot of his time. The reason 99% of the good quality members leave is exactly because of the bullshit and Trump fanaticism. If I could leave myself at the moment I would! PS The exception was that Richard Gale was a massive Trump and Brexit fan.... tipping point for him was me being anti-Brexit on Facebook... Lost a friend there over Brexit.... He fell out with me and was never seen again here. Politics has never been more toxic online. But I can't help people when it comes to the bullshit they believe. It's up to them to overcome their delusions. Oh and by the way, the creep Jon Pais, moderator from the very early days, turned into a lunatic you may remember and his behaviour as mod was a turn off to 90% of the members of this forum. So I had to ease him out of the role and then he turned into this crazy bitter guy, a Sony fanboy, you may remember, who polluted every thread he posted on and then started posting nasty lunatic comments on his own blog about EOSHD. So he showed his true face in the end. I don't ban in a knee jerk way... This was a guy I trusted as a mod, for many years. But if someone crosses me in my own home, they are a deadman walking. You have to remember this is a community. If you want better people to join, and bigger names to engage, then we need to look at the quality of our own posts first. Is it useful? Is it interesting? Does it help people? If so, you get pros joining, talented artists joining, filmmakers and loyal people who stick around compelled to read what we say day in day out.2 points -

On my last day of freedom yesterday before martial law fell down upon us, I went out and purchased a total of 50 meters (that is 164ft for you Americans) of extension cables! Just in case I need to run power into my office/home from somewhere else in an emergency, should just for our part the electricity happen to fail :-/ Also going to be useful for if I want to set up lights for youtube videos nearby (but of course still within our self isolation office building!! Not outside, just like say the lobby downstairs). And of course after the lock down, long stingers are always handy to have on film sets! So buying 50m worth won't be totally money wasted.2 points

This is bit like trying to remember the "divorced, beheaded, died" rhyme about the fate of Henry VIII's six wives ! I'll have a go at guessing in order with "absent, absent, banned, absent, banned". Looking at recent posts objectively, it is always the same users who end a perfectly good discussion on this forum with toxic bullshit. I am coming after you. It is a cull. It isn't about politics. It's about values! To protect a community I love... I have no choice. To be clear, it is none of my business which way you vote. What matters is behaviour, character, values. If you've been a good contributor here and kind to people you get to stay. If not, then you are going to be asked to leave and I will pursue people who return under a different name. This is purely because there are now far too many posts being trashed and too much arguing driven by people with the wrong values which I despise. I am going to use this week to draw up a list of people who strongly align themselves with Trump's politics of America First. And I will be getting rid of the lot of you. Yes you can say it's a political purge but I prefer to think of it as purely about values and about protecting users who DO contribute positively to the forum. If these idiots are allowed to get away with bringing Trump idolising bullshit into this community then all our work will be for nothing and Russia with their fake-user farms will have won too, because I am 99% sure at least a few of the idiots are completely made-up shill users whose role is to divide us politically and weaken our online communities. At a time when we must pull together as a camera-community, as filmmaking industry, even as a country, indeed as a world - to get through tough economic times ahead - dumb arguments which ignore factual data are a waste of time. What has happened to the world in recent weeks is stressful enough and I personally do not need to hear from certain people in every thread. I will not be providing a platform for Red cap wearing idiots who haven't contributed a single shot or image to this forum. I get that EOSHD has a big US readership, in fact the US contribution to my site is the largest in the world and I want to keep as many of you as possible and not lose any friends who just happen to disagree with me on politics. But if you are going to be a shill for Trump's politics or somebody who is a complete shit-stirrer and troll, then I will no longer be turning a blind eye to it and the cull starts now... Have fun on your way out.1 point -
Western governments are criminally negligent over Coronavirus
Juank reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
There is a slow burning realisation and awakening in the UK and Europe (it will come to the US soon) that we have fucked up. Big time. In Japan and Taiwan, simple early hygiene measures avoided a lockdown or economic crash. Thousands of jobs saved, but more importantly thousands of lives saved from the outset. In January, the Japanese started to test in-depth for coronavirus and did case by case contact tracing and isolation. The public did their bit by wearing masks en-masse in public and using hand sanitiser. @BTM_Pix points out that most if not all shops had hand sanitiser on the entrance so people didn't unwittingly spread by handling goods. At the same time, here in the UK our government did nothing. Business as normal. In February our crackpot chief advisor started to float the theory of herd immunity, and amazingly the chief scientists and government itself went for this strategy straight off the bat, as the first cases reached the UK. When the scientists ran the numbers, it wasn't until over a month later... It would result in 2 million dead people, minimum. The chief advisor Dominic Cummings is rumoured to have been advocating for the death of 2 million people as late as February 28th. "At one private event at the end of February, Cummings outlined then government’s strategy at the time in a way that was summarised by some present as “herd immunity, protect the economy, and if that means some pensioners die, too bad.” Meanwhile in Japan and Taiwan, the simple hygiene measures were leaving some of the most densely populated cities on Earth virtually untouched by the epidemic. But for Italy things were rapidly going downhill. Another government who sat on their hands in January and February. Italy's terrifying unfolding tragedy is a glimpse into the future for all of us... Just 2-4 weeks into the future. In Italy, 20-30% of intensive care patients are aged 20-40. People with underlying health or lung problems are at great risk even if they're young. Hospitals and health systems will collapse. The sudden lockdowns required, will crash the economy, creating joblessness, government debt and hardship on a scale never seen before in modern times. Meanwhile Japan remains open for business. Sure, with some major events cancelled and the Olympics in doubt... But over in China, they are already going back to work. Taiwan has some of the fewest cases and deaths per 100,000 people in the world, despite being on the doorstep of China. Hong Kong too. In the West this is the biggest government manslaughter unfolding, that has ever been seen in our lives. Italy, Spain, Germany, UK, US, we are all going to face utter darkness. Please takes step to protect yourselves from the government's handling of this in the critical early stages. It is going to get out of control.1 point -

Especially now with the pandemic, everyone turns to the state again, like the good-ol' socialistic days of the 80s, when the dream of the United States of Europe was driven by socialistic governments and leaders for a whole decade and a half. It is obvious that health has to be provided by the state, to all citizens. No private hospital or health institution can accept anyone with Corona right now. At least in Europe, except if it is ordered by the state/country. Already there are rumours of some Air companies to become national again. Air Italia is a certainty. So, the two poster services of this new capitalism - private health care and air ways, already shown signs of weaknesses to a real crisis, and not stupid man made recessions of an already screwed economic system, like in 2008. The system just re-arranged itself in 2008, now it will be re-arranged by the circumstances that can not truly control. This is da shit, U.S and U.K want to "open for business" in 3 weeks from now, but the only business that will thrive in 3 weeks, will be funeral services, unfortunately - and I hope not. This will be a real blow to the policies of those nations there. You can not ignore real world issues like that. This is not a 3rd country, 3rd tier epidemic, this is an all world pandemic (unfortunately for us humans, it is a 3rd tier disease. Imagine an Embola pandemic or the 21st century version of the Spanish flu. We are that little). A few good things. Some companies in Europe "illegally" reverse-engineered some parts that couldn't be brought from overseas fast enough and 3D printed them. 3D printing for health care is going to another level. A company based in Prague provided the health system for free 1000 masks (big ones that protect the whole head, it is like a mini shield) with things they resourced in Prague "in one afternoon". Most doctors and national health systems are providing data on an unprecedented level for the very first time in history. Cheap and easily made tests are very near in manufacturing already and we hope for a drug at the minimum (which unfortunately is 18-20 months from now, the testing process can not be hastened much, imagine if you inject 2-3.000.000.000 the wrong thing!). People will respect more our basic needs and resources. Our way of life is not sustainable.1 point -

Like I said, it's a community here, that also means it's not just all serious, it's a bit like a pub so at times it's just about having a laugh with a couple of mates as well. Bros usually talk girls, sports and cars... well, here it's all sorta of people just geeking out over gear, the latest movies and other things scene related. With a lot of weight put on 'scene related'. And everyone puts in effort to share their knowledge, experiences, et cetera. So, talking sports... during a football match the ref isn't gonna push the players in the field that are complaining he should've given a penalty and make the scene. He doesn't entertain rubbish with rubbish. You weren't exactly handing out warnings or trying to defuse the situation, was more like throwing fuel of the fire. A ref would issue a warning... yellow card, then red card. Suspended for this and next week's game perhaps. All quite void of much emotion at all. Of course you're free to handle it however you see fit, 'your pub, your rules'. But if a couple of drunks come in and go 'ah, finally my wife let me go with the boys' and you go 'she's a fat pig'... obviously you don't have to be surprised to have bar stools flying around in notime, lol. Unfortunately that's what politics end up like everytime...1 point -

Hmmmm.... maybe it was really the Japanese scientists who released the coronavirus? Because they discovered they're better at bioengineering than being semiconductor engineers! I'm interested in also seeing how to get the best Rec709 internal out of the Sony F3, not sure that is something discussed too much? Basically treating it as a "C100" instead of a "Mini Alexa" camera. As sometimes a C100 is all you need! Such as if I'm merely shooting content for my YouTube channel. Or most low budget corporate content. And even the internal stuff can be pretty good! For instance "Safety Not Guaranteed" (ha! What a title for these times) was shot I believe just internally, pre S-log days.1 point

Dear EphariamP: You stated the following in your post: "Sorry, but you are wrong here. 62,984,828 people voted for Trump, vs 65,853,514 for Clinton, so nearly 3 million more voted for Clinton. Why isn't SHE president? Thank our regressive electoral college system put in place by aristocratic southern slaveholders." You do not understand the origins of the US Constitution. During the Constitutional Convention of 1787 one of the biggest hurdles to overcome was that the small states were concerned about being dominated by the large states. To get agreement amongst the 13 states they agreed to the following: Bicarmal legislature with the lower house (House of Representatives) to be proportional to the population and an upper house (Senate) where each state would have two senators. That the President would be determined by the majority of electors. With each state having a number of electors equal to the number of members in the House of Representatives plus two Senators. You made the statement that our "electoral college systems was put in place by aristocratic southern slave owners". But who were the large states of the day: New York(non-slave), Pennsylvania(non-slave), Massachusetts (non-slave), Virginia(slave), and North Carolina(slave). And the small states were: New Jersey (non-slave), Connecticut (non-slave), Rhode Island (non-slave), Vermont (non-slave), and Maine (non-slave). As you can see, it was the small, non-slave states that wanted what has become known as the Connecticut or the Great Compromise not the "aristocratic southern slaveholders" as you asserted. When you make statements like this it important to get your facts correct. Let the revisionists begin with their flaming and possible banning from the this site. Regardless, I don't care. Just want to make sure that the history is correct. Sincerely, Don1 point

So it is hard to judge if it is worthwhile, but by simply glancing at the product photos I'd already err in leaning towards shit rather than great But hey, it's also dirt dirt cheap, so for non-critical work, why not give it a punt? That's always going to be a tough ask then under windy conditions. Perhaps a lav with more extra wind protection? On camera mics are a shit approach anyway.1 point

Finally getting my rig finalized. Zacuto is sending me a new Zwiss plate (noticed this one is mounted upside down) since the rod receiver was tweaked...but I'm absolutely loving this setup. It allows for power all day and powering my SmallHD ultra bright monitor along with the camera and any other potential accessory I may attach down the road. It adds the weight to make things really stable handheld. The battery just goes right into my shoulder/chest area as I use the Smallrig grip with my right hand and pull focus with my left gripping the rods/lens. Leaving the Zfinder attached allows for quick mobility by removing system from rails (quick release plate) and going really discrete while still maintaining stability. The z-finder frame that originally was included sucked and popped right off, so I improvised. Works well and doesn't flop around at all. Will always be recording CDNG in 1080 or UHD 12 bit...don't see this cam being used any other way. If sigma can just fix a couple of the issues...I'd love it even more!1 point -
Seeing as I acquired a Sony CineAlta 50mm T2 PL lens recently, would be quite nice to get a few more, such as specifically the 20mm and 35mm (or any of them really). However, with the economic recession we're now, and the collapse of the NZ Dollar, I highly doubt I'll be doing any of that in 2020. Might even go in the opposite direction, and reduce my lens collection instead of increasing it, perhaps get rid of my Rokinons. In a dream dream world I'd like the Fujinon 18-55 and 50-135 T2.9 zooms, and the new Sirui / Vazen anamorphic lenses. Heck, why not the DZOFilm or Laowa OOOM 25-100 T2.9 zoom lenses too? Ha! Of course these entire last paragraph is completely hallucinogenic pipe dreams.1 point

It's a very interesting question. There are 3 methods how to approach the task and those 3 methods are actually different ways to structure your color correcting/grading workflow in Resolve. Color matching two different cameras has 2 steps: 1. Correctly interpret colors in Resolve for each camera. 2. Color match them if there are differences. Hint. If the first step is done correctly you will have very little to no work on the second one. There are plenty of videos on youtube but all they go straight to the second one missing the crucial first step. One or more cameras most people don't know how to do correctly step one. That was my case until recently. Method 1: LUTs and more specifically Leeming LUTs PRO. If you shoot with each camera with the settings given by the author and then apply the corrective LUTs in Resolve for each camera you will get correct colors from both cameras. They should look the same. Panasonic GH5 and Sony A7 series are supported. Tried this on BMPCC 4K and Sony A7 III and it works reasonably well. But not always and setting the cameras each time correctly require some work and attention. https://www.leeminglutpro.com/ Few professional colorists publishing tutorials on youtube advise against LUTs for color correction. Method 2: ACES Used ACES method in the past to work with Sony S-Log 2 video and results were great. Method 3 - Color Space Transform effect in Resolve. This one was game changer for me and the method currently use as a first step for color grading/correction. Including when footage is from different cameras. My productivity in Resolve jumped at least two times and results are great. Wish I new this before ! The best video which explains the method and probably the most important part of color correction in Resolve is unfortunately in Russian. But you still will be able to pick up the principles and settings for both cameras. This guy is a ex professional colorist. Never seen anybody with tutorials on youtube explain the theory and practice so logically and simply. Apart of the color space transform values for input and output color space and gamma, you should also set Tone Mapping to Luminance Mapping. That's very important. Once the color space transform is done on one clip do a stills grab and then apply it on all clips from the camera with few clicks. Same process for the clips of the other camera(s) All 3 methods require to be well aware what picture profile you used during the shoot. For Sony Cameras this colorist advise to use HLG. If you don't have HLG then you should use color profiles or create your own color profiles having Color Mode setting = SGammut. Because it is not clear what color space are Sony PP with Color Mode = Cinema, Pro, Movie. Hope this helps.1 point
