  4. Some small compensation for the lock down. I've been taking mine out on our daily exercise outside. It's pretty quiet around here outside as expected. Dogs are getting more walks then they've ever had in their life and must be wondering what's going on... I am probably heading towards the 11672, the latest summicron version. I like the bokeh of it. As you say, getting a used one with a lens this new is difficult. Have fun though - avoid checking for flicker in the shadows and enjoy the cam first!! cheers Paul

  6. Guys, thanks so much for taking the time to watch the film and post your thoughts! Awesome. I posted this over a year ago so it's a nice surprise to see these today. @Displayhd - great feedback on audio! I have very little experience with sound design but since releasing it it was the thing that struck me most when watching other people's more accomplished shorts. I barely used any location or foley sound and relied heavily on the music and the character's audio. Big learning point there! Yes, my bro was actor. He definitely has some natural talent and we're hoping to get together and make some more shorts together soon. He'll appreciate that feedback, and agree we could have leveraged more emotion, particularly if the script was more fleshed out. Given the time we had we were relatively happy with the script, but yes sooooo much more we would have liked to have done with it. I don't mind that it poses a few questions, leaves some things a little mysterious, but I don't think we drew the story our strongly enough. hehe, it's funny, we recorded a number of panther approaching shots, with me running, jumping out of the bushes and growling at him, and it was so difficult pulling focus while running and jumping and landing the framing on his face (I was having to shoot close to wide open with the Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 as the light faded) and then we decided we had to record something more simple for backup. I was wide open at iso3200/6400 at the end, retaking the shot trying to get something that would at least make sense! Strangely in the edit we started by using one of these running takes, but it felt a bit "b-movie' which wasn't quite the right vibe. There are some "outtakes" here showing some of the failed attempts haha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPqztHFSLPc&t=1s Love the idea of 8 hour production with most time on script! I think limiting time, giving yourself boundaries, is great for creativity. @KnightsFan - thanks man!! I was really pleased with first shot too. Actually, I think it was my favourite shot and then went down hill from there haha Again, great feedback on audio! Would have loved to use boom mic, but it was just me and my bro doing everything so we had to go with lavalier. Great idea going out and re-recording some of the audio. I think with better planning I would have definitely made time for this because of the value it would have added! Agreed, there could definitely be a little more background on who died. We wanted it to be somewhat ambiguous so people could draw their own conclusions, but it's a little too loose. Thanks so much again for your comments, it's great motivation to start thinking about the next one.

  7. Dear filmmakers of EOSHD! Since many of us are advised to #staythefuckhome and, thanks to that, we found ourselves having plenty of free time, I humbly announce a new film challenge, as proposed by @sanveer and @BTM_Pix: One Single Room In Your House | Film Challenge. I, personally, find the rules suggested by @sanveer very applicable, would you agree with me? Here they are: The only thing I'd add (and take it more as advice, not a rule per se) is: KEEP IT (SHORT AND) SIMPLE aka KISS 😘 Can we count on your support, @Andrew Reid? A blog post of some sort? Who's in?

There's something appealing about the behavior of blues and teals using IPP2. It has a certain iciness to it that's hard to describe.

    Help grading HLG (GH5)

If you get a chance, try the workflow I outlined in the previous post. It's actually really easy, and so far seems to be working well. As for shooting, I have found that it's really important to have zebras turned on, and also glance at the histogram from time to time to get the exposure right. You can't really trust what you see on the monitor in HLG. I basically made sure I was ETTR just under the point where zebras would show up. Doing that makes the clips "look" over-exposed, but all that data is there and when you set the color space, shifts back to a normal exposure.

  11. I should be editing my footage from the F1 However I can't get this out of my head... It's extraordinary... In 2004 Chinese researchers in a lab working on SARS coronaviruses became ill. They had become effected with the very viruses they were researching. Suddenly SARS was back out in the community. Big scandal at the time but thankfully these workers were isolated immediately and SARS doesn't have a very big contagion vector. https://www.the-scientist.com/news-analysis/sars-escaped-beijing-lab-twice-50137 In 2013 researchers in China showed that one of the coronaviruses circulating in horseshoe bats could bind to human lung cells. The Chinese government didn't really do much to stop the trade in bat meat and kept it on sale at markets. In 2015 researchers in Wuhan went further... Creation of a chimaera From the scientific journal Nature, November 2015: https://www.nature.com/news/engineered-bat-virus-stirs-debate-over-risky-research-1.18787?WT.mc_id=TWT_NatureNews "An experiment that created a hybrid version of a bat coronavirus — one related to the virus that causes SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) — has triggered renewed debate over whether engineering lab variants of viruses with possible pandemic potential is worth the risks. "In an article published in Nature Medicine on 9th November, scientists investigated a virus called SHC014, which is found in horseshoe bats in China. The researchers created a chimaeric virus, made up of a surface protein of SHC014 and the backbone of a SARS virus that had been adapted to grow in mice and to mimic human disease. The chimaera infected human airway cells — proving that the surface protein of SHC014 has the necessary structure to bind to a key receptor on the cells and to infect them. It also caused disease in mice, but did not kill them." "The findings reinforce suspicions that bat coronaviruses capable of directly infecting humans (rather than first needing to evolve in an intermediate animal host) may be more common than previously thought, the researchers say. "But other virologists question whether the information gleaned from the experiment justifies the potential risk. Although the extent of any risk is difficult to assess, Simon Wain-Hobson, a virologist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, points out that the researchers have created a novel virus that “grows remarkably well” in human cells. “If the virus escaped, nobody could predict the trajectory,” he says." Some of my thoughts... 1. The reputable journal Nature has added a disclaimer to the original article, saying there's no proof the current coronavirus is engineered 2. However I find it an incredible coincidence that the ONLY level 4 microbiology research lab in China handling deadly coronaviruses is in Wuhan, of all places. 3. Then there's the strange reaction of the Chinese government in December and January, including towards doctors who reported the initial cases of what we now know of COVID-19. Intimidation, cover-ups, you name it. 4. Maj. Gen. Chen Wei, China's top bioweapons expert and others were dispatched to the Wuhan lab in January (According to - https://nypost.com/2020/02/22/dont-buy-chinas-story-the-coronavirus-may-have-leaked-from-a-lab/) 5. As early as 2013, the Chinese government researchers knew SHC014 and similar coronaviruses could bind to key receptor ACE2 in human lungs... But the wild animal markets stayed open. Why did China not open up about what they knew and take action on the markets? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26552008 6. Many in the scientific community questioned the grave risks of such research at the time but China pressed on. Their government clearly wished to know if SHC014 could bind to ACE2 if it made the leap to humans. I am not suggesting they were searching for biological weapon ingredients... But damn, did they find one. From Nature: "[The study findings] move this virus from a candidate emerging pathogen to a clear and present danger”. Useful to know, but it didn't stop certain people eating the hosts of such pathogens... or potentially trading ex-lab animals on the black market. In fact some Chinese researchers have been previously jailed for doing exactly that. 7. Going so far as to make this chimera virus, an engineered bat virus tested on mice, strikes me as incredibly dangerous research, open to all sorts of abuse and accidents. 8. In Wuhan, the "gain-of-function" research on viruses seeks to understand the genetic makeup and specifics of virus-host interaction... In other words, how can we gain the function to effect other hosts like humans, and what can we learn from it? Risky science, or purposefully malign? Either way, the Chinese government owes the world a massive apology. The bat meat and wild animal markets selling bats should have stopped at least 5 years ago. The Wuhan research lab safety standards need to be transparent and any cases of corruption made public. And an agreement with the rest of the world should be signed by the Chinese military, promising never to conduct research for the production of bioweapons. Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier of World War I said before he died - "the next war will be chemical, and they will never learn". Guess he was right.

  12. Definitely play around with it, Chris! The highlight roll off control alone allows for range compression depending on what's going on. Kind of seems like a local highlight tonemap operator. For this shot, I used a Soft rolloff to help the roof lights transition more smoothly into the fog. It's acting like an extra diffusion layer on top of the natural fog scatter.

  14. I totally forgot that Slog 3 exists due to the fact I'm used to running 8 bit cameras. But I've been testing it the last few days and am super impressed with how easily it grades. I made an Slog 3 LC 709 conversion lut for grading. I expose my Slog 3 on the Sony FS5 at 1.5 stops over. With Bright at 77 IRE - You can use a conjunction of AE shift and the variable ND filter set to auto to make exposing really easy. Only thing bad about Slog 3 is that its a bitch when trying to monitor. Its like comparing Slog 2 vs Cine 4. It's VERY flat which makes it hard to check focus. Conversion Lut - https://www.dropbox.com/s/6yrozb1z5olhez9/Slog3 LC 709 Correction.cube?dl=0 Just use a creative lut after you apply this one and with some minor exposure tweaking you should be good. (You will probably need to lower the Luts intensity)

  15. To summary up the findings so far around Resolve Studio 16.2 and 1Dx III files: - HEVC ALL-I and IPB 10bit 4:2:2 25fps neither Quick Sync or Nvidia 20xx can HW decode them. From our test seems all done in the CPU. - A top class desktop CPU 9900K can software decode in realtime both HEVC ALL-I and IPB 10bit 4:2:2 25 fps - A top class Notebook CPU 8750H can software decode in real-time but really at the limit (not really usable on a timeline without setting half resolution) HEVC but only IPB 10bit 4:2:2 25 fps not ALL-I (this is a strange one as IPB are more computationally intensive, probably the software decoder is more optimized for IPB). - A top class desktop CPU 9900K with a Nvidia 2080ti can realtime playback RAW 24fps. Probably even at 60fps I would need to upload and send a file to @Trankilstef - A top class Notebook CPU 8750H but with a medium gpu 1050ti cannot real-time playback RAW 24fps, CPU is at 70% and GPU at 100% so maybe a gaming notebook with 8750H or 9750H with a 2070 or 2080 is able to do real-time RAW playback. Hope to find it out soon - A top class Notebook 9750H with 2070 cannot playback real-time HEVC ALL-I 10bit 4:2:2 25fps. We would need to test IPB I just cannot imagine if the R5 at 8K will also be HVEC 10bit 4:2:2 if there is a machine that can playback those files. Hopefully there will be HW decoding in the future for this file type. Thanks a lot to @KnightsFan @Trankilstef and @Matthew19 for the tests and contribution

  24. Here's two DNG (not FP jpegs), Elmarit 28mm f2.8 lens. First image shot at f8 ISO100, no processing or lens correction, no colour correction in Capture One except tiny exposure balancing. Second is f4 at ISO100, again no correction or processing. Both times focussing at infinity. The f4 looks soft in the corners. I think my 35mm f2 Summicron is a better lens, and smaller.

  25. got the 1dx III - Shot a few projects with it. It's very nice. Highlight rolloff is my favorite part. 10bit ipb 60fps won't playback on a 10 core iMac pro. same for all-i 24fps. that part sucks. Here's a trailer from the wedding with the 1dx III. I got to play with pushing exposure to more of a light and bright look, which matched the planners style - this was clog and IPB recording.

  29. Nice! I think the first shot was great. The mysterious references to past events made me want to find out what the mystery was. I think that after that first shot, I would have liked to get a little more story and for it to reveal a little more about who died, what they were doing that made them "stupid," etc. I agree with the comments above, it was a little too obvious the character was wearing a mic, especially when the rope was rubbing against the jacket. And then one yell was badly distorted. One option for better sound is to use a boom mic and strategically mix that with the lav, for example using the boom exclusively for those effects. If you don't have a boom mic but do have the time, then you can even just go back and re-record some of those sounds with the mic placed somewhere to better capture those effects. But great job for a first narrative short with a limited production time/resources! I'd love to see whatever you make next.

  30. Hi! I liked the music/sound effects. The audio seemed very crisp but seemed too much the focus, as if to give away that the character was wearing a mic. Perhaps increase location audio and reduce crispbess of character mic. I liked the acting given the film's restraints and what it seems like you set out to do. The main actor (you or your brother?) Seems like they have a lot of potential and could have possibly been even more emotional. I liked the subtle panning at the headstone as the character walked away. I liked the artistic incorporation of horse, use of forest. I liked the location choice. I wished the grave were not so old looking since it seems the death was more recent. The rope seems to suggest suicide attempt but could use more clarity. The story seemed disjointed to me (or just lacked clarity)... Is it a horror movie about a beast that kills anyone who has the token item (toy panther)? Interesting theme and I want to see more of the theme/story come through. The lead-up to the beast attack is sort of nonexistent, so more lead up could be good there, like the camera 'running' towards the character. And/or the character reacting with surprise. This might not have been your goal, but I still think that scene left me scratching my head for a moment. Through this process of actually making the short film, you get to see how your concept plays out. To me, it is a good concept-design kick-off sort of film which shows that you can make something and helps you see an idea play out. I would get together with a few more people, get a script, and read it together, asking questions of every line and direction such as: "who cares?" "Why is this important?" "How does this scene help the film?" Work the script over and refine it, eliminating things that don't really serve to tell the story. You set aside 8 hrs for preproduction, 8 hrs filming and 8 hrs editing. Alright. Try setting aside 10 hrs for writing only, including criticizing the script with a friend or two. Then, keep production simple with 2 hrs production planning, 1 hr location audio capture, 2-3 hrs shooting, and finally 8-9 hrs editing. It seems to me that this plan could force you into a different way of filmmaking and help develop some additional film-making muscle. Also, if you really want a challenge, try 5 hrs writing, and limit the filming to one hr. Then 2 hrs to edit. It will force you to work efficiently and probably be helpful. 8 hr challenge!

Let me be clear that our media in the United States hates Trump with a passion. They have been caught quite a few times either twisting the truth, or completely fabricating an entire story. This CureVac article is a serious accusation that has clearly angered an an entire nation, and it needs to be proven either way.
