To really love a camera it must be a comfortable, fast sportscar, not a mundane commuting experience. Here's what I've grown to like the most, from the past year of camera releases which I've owned and shot with. NEW BLOG POST!4 points -
For ergonomics nothing beats the NX1 for me. Also one of the reason's I've stuck with my Nikon gear over other options.3 points

Yeah NX1 still amazes me, how something so 'conventional' in design feels so right. The smooth curves, big grip, direct controls, lightning fast responses, superb build quality, great screen, and then there's the image itself and the colour. Easily holds up today!2 points -

I've tried 7Artisans 25/1.8 (with the correct focal length set in the menu), Fuji XF 35/1.4 and Fuji 23/2. They all yield the same results, both with SAF, CAF and Manual focus. IBIS was turned on, IS BOOST mode and DIS was turned off, turning them on makes the problem even worse. I've included a shot with IBIS+DIS in my test video that @androidladposted. I even tested H264 vs H265, DCI VS 16:9, 100 vs 200 vs 400 mbps, 25 vs 50 fps. Same result. The thing is, you have to move the camera slowly in order for this to happen. It seems to me that the camera realizes to late that it's actually moving and compensates for it with the "jump" If I increase the speed of the exact same movement, the sensor doesn't jump.2 points -

Second that. The Blade Runner video made me crazy about the GH2, got one barely used at a good price...and with it started my love of photography and video. Still have the GH2 here, failed to sell it when it was still valuable...now bought a cheap Viltrox 5 inch monitor to use as focus peaking viewer. Most of the videos made it it are garbage, because I did not have good lenses at the time, heheheh. Interesting, some of the concerts stills that I've got with the GH2 now I think that are some of the best that I've taken - and GH2 arguably was not a good low light camera. The pictures from a Bruce Springsteen concert taken with a Can on FD 135mm f/2.5 are the most organic still that I've taken (and remember, no IBIS...). Miss you covering cheap gear and extracting the best of it, Andrew.2 points -
Andrew, it would be amazing to have a GH2 vs GH3 vs GH4 vs GH5 Challenge, to see how much Panasonic had changed over the last few years. Plus maybe cover how Panasonic didn't do enough to advertise the GH2 as an Indie Film Marvel (Panasonic's advertising team is still pretty garbage, IMO), at a fraction of the cost of the 5Dii and many other mor expensive options. Even Panasonic's G7, GX85, G85 are so underrated too. Why they couldn't grab a larger film students and low budget indie filmmakers market share, is a testament to probably poor advertising. I agree. Even the Darkness Seeker ISO12800 GH2 video. The grain in that video was just insane.2 points

Garbage is an interesting word for this camera. I’m glad I won’t have to read R-bashing for much longer. Before we all move on, and pick up an R Successor, I’d like to put this in the record. I’ve nothing better to do right now, so here’s the whole story of the R from someone who has used it every day since it first dropped 18 months ago. Firstly, fair point on this thread about the DR- on par with the C100 at best, maybe C200 (the non raw output). The crop never bothered me though - close enough to match the S35 cinecams - and there’s always the metabones as a fair fix. My problem with the R, like other R users on this thread, is the rolling shutter in 4K / crop mode (RS is fine in full frame), though I found this practically disappeared when using wider lenses like the Sigma 18-35. It’s there if you chuck it about. So I have to give a damn about camera movement, and I sometimes use a shoulder/chest pod handheld. Forget 50mm and above though yeah unless you’re on a gimbal or using some kind of rig. Flawed camera, it certainly is. The rolling shutter is my major gripe (my other gripe being no 60p in 4K - minor for me but a deal-breaker for many, I get it). This RS, which btw enhances some tilt-access warp in the electronic IS, so it’s a double-whammy, meant countless hours of experimentation and in the end meant building my own chest/shoulder pod for extreme handheld work and longer focal lengths. I’ve destroyed the RS but I wish I hadn’t had to do this, and I don’t always want to have to use this rig (even though it does improve every shoot). Bring on the IBIS. The 4K 60p. 10 bit internal. All hail R5/R6 - so long as there’s improved rolling shutter. Garbage though? In and of itself, and just going by specs, I won’t argue that it was a disappointment, especially for full frame shooters. I agree, it’s a flawed video camera. BUT, when you put the R in context - ie with lenses, next to other cameras -I’d argue it offers formidable value for doc shooters, solo operators and for all the indie filmmakers who want to use a Sigma 18-35 without a focus puller.... Because it’s the only mirrorless cam on the planet to offer perfect autofocus (yes, for me, it works PERFECTLY) with that Sigma 18-35, a lens so good that many cinematographers use its rehoused glass for its true 1.8 transmission, near parfocality, and smooth focusing with almost imperceptible breathing (well, at least on the R...) I may be wrong, but I think the only other cameras on Earth that pair this well with the Sigma 18-35 for autofocussing full 4K readout are the Canon cinecams: C200, C300 mkii, mkiii, C500 mkii... I’d say the R is in pretty good company. When you then add the R’s drop in ND filter (1.5-10 stops), it really gets interesting. I barely remove it when using the Sigma. How many of those cinecams have non-stepping ND (they step two stops, four etc) On the R you just adjust to any stop, wherever you want... all with the roll of a finger. The R also has decent electronic image stabilisation (if you know how to sidestep its limitations) which is missing from some of Canon’s ‘cinema cameras’. I’m aware the R doesn’t have native XLR inputs or pro time code functions etc. I know it’s not a cinema camera (but this didn’t stop me selling my C300 to use the R exclusively). It’s a consumer camera - with an image that punches WELL above its weight. The R’s 4K is a 1:1 readout (which you can also out at 10 bit). Its 1080 is downsampled from the same 4K readout in crop mode. The R5 will not process its 4K the same way. It may be better, if Canon downsample 8K (it might not be better, especially its 1080), otherwise what kind of voodoo will the R5, and its purported 45 megapixel sensor, have to perform to offer better than 1:1 readout to cover the image circle of my Sigma 18-35? I hope Canon does it. Obviously, the R is not going to be any cinematographers first choice to shoot a movie, but for anyone else, especially doc shooters and solo operators, I’m hard pressed to think of a better value canon video camera. Its 4K image rivals the C200, even performs a decent imitation of the 1DC image. And it has a 5Dmkiv built into it. In a low-profile mirrorless body. With an RF lens mount. All this for as little as £1400 used (and falling...) The R was received poorly by all of us who were hoping it was gonna be the R6 and the anger STILL resounds. But the R6 is now coming, and soon the R Classic will be totally written off (if it hasn’t been already). If the next gen R cams can really deliver, I’ll probably trade in my R, and some kid can pick it up used and sacrifice it’s stunning images to the gods of YouTube compression - or maybe create something beautiful. Garbage? I’m afraid you’re probably right - the R will end up as garbage - but I don’t think it deserves to be. Despite how frustrating the camera can be, it’s also been amazing in many ways. Farewell to the garbage that time forgot. Or will the R Classic be resurrected in the RF era, the impending ‘Revolution’ love-in, suddenly touted as the ‘next-best’ option to the R Pros for those shooters that, in these uncertain times, will not be able to afford the insane price tags surely headed our way.2 points

Yeah Fuji menus are sucky. I don't usually need to change anything though that I can't access with the buttons. Menus are still better than Sony. On the Fuji I have the high speed option assigned to a button, so if I want to switch to 120p is super quick. However say I want to switch from 24p to 60p or from HD to 4k, then I have to go into the menus. I like the A6300 grip but yeah it heats up in 4k and the battery life sucked. One big thing I think a lot of people don't take into account on the XT3 is the battery grip! Some battery grips only have a single battery or don't allow you to utilize the in camera battery. Fuji gives you two batteries in the grip plus the one in the camera. That makes for pretty amazing battery life and the extra weight honestly helps for video. Its one of the many reasons I haven't went with a Pocket camera over the Fuji. Fuji has AF, flip screen, easy compact battery solution, and nicer out of camera color. Whats the point of a Pocket camera if you can't really easily use it in its native form factor. Of course the Pocket cams will be worth it for some people but I'd rather just grab my Ursa if I really need the IQ. I can actually shoot handheld on my URSA without it looking a mess.1 point -

Great post! I think design, UI, and ergonomics are an under-reported element to our work. As every NX1 will say, it is such an enjoyable camera to use. Not just the chunky grip and sensible button placement, but the straightforward, simple menus deserve a shoutout. As a general use photo camera nothing comes close. Though I haven't used them, I think the Z6/Z7 are noteworthy for actually including a locator pin hole on the bottom--so simple, but so helpful. On the other side, the Z Cam E2 has some unique design choices that stand out. Lack of a grip makes gimbal balancing easier, and the presence of two 1/4-20 threads makes it super stable. Unlike larger pro cameras, it's tiny and much more easily managed for a single person crew. Then there's the phenomenal Z Cam app: wired/wireless monitoring and control from an iPhone. I noticed that! Definitely a nice touch.1 point -

I am using photo and video cameras for a lot of decades now (since when we only had film), nothing is even close to the NX1, it is just unbelievable how right this camera feels/is. Super AMOLED screens, everything can be done in at least 3 ways, best touch screen implemantation so far, and still the best menus ever (Black Magic are amazing too, but they are just video cameras and their screens are bigger). If you just grip the camera and take a couple of photos, then you are hooked for life. Best size to weight ration also for me,. I am waiting the new Canon R cameras, maybe they will be the closest thing to perfection.1 point -

Cheap gear, not much of it around now! Anything vaguely interesting is at least $1000 Gone are the GH2 days. Fuji X-T4 is closest we get today. E-M10 III is the best ultra cheap. Although I do think the X-H1 makes a superb used bargain for $750 And diving back into old used cameras like the GH1 today makes for a fun challenge.1 point -
Without reading back this entire thread, when folks are reporting wobbliness and artifacts and any other issues, can you please confirm at the same time whether this is based on having an actual production version in your own hands or whether you are simply parroting back what you've read on-line. Unfortunately the only mode I found RS acceptable on the eos-r was full frame HD but the image was closer to the soft Canon mush of their old dslrs than it was to the lovely detailed C100. Used C100s are still a great camera if you don't need 4k1 point -

Fuji X-T4
colepat reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I see. Certainly seems like a bug to me. Well mine arrives on Wednesday and I'll see if there's a way to shoot with it that doesn't provoke it. The rotating type of shot above certainly doesn't seem to be handled with any kind of finesse. But it is V1.0 firmware, so I am sure it is fixable. Fuji are very responsive when it comes to these things. I still have the X-H1 and will see if that also exhibits the behaviour. Clearly not going to hurt every shot... But those rotations, it seems like the camera wants to catch up or over-compensate... Possibly what I think is going on, is that the sensor is moving on the X axis slowly along to try and resist the rotation, and then when it runs out of room, resets itself to the middle and then starts again. Anyway, we'll see what Fuji has to say. I'm sending this to my contacts there.1 point -

Yes about the same as GH5 for low light, maybe a bit better. It's a superb shot-getter. But X-T4 is also a gem of a camera. I'd go with either over a Blackmagic Pocket. He should try the IBIS boost mode as well. This adds a small crop but makes the stabilisation more effective in video mode.1 point -

Actually, I am kind of happy with the Fashion Low Contrast lut in the Varicam pack. I still do my exposure in a node BEFORE the LUT is applied, and just use the shadows / highlights and contrast / pivot controls. Then I do the color changes in a node after the lut is applied.1 point -

So I went with the Samyang for now as the F4 seemed a bit too slow. Clearly you use it with good results. Also as I’m doing this on the side didn’t want to invest too much extra yet. I’m certainly thinking our local market is the same as what you’ve described that more are wanting video. At least that’s what a few realtor friends of mine have said. I’m not quite sure whom exactly I’m competing against locally but the market varies in quality from iPhone (super crappy) to professional. I’d say most of the listings I see though look to be lower quality iPhone stuff. Before my career change I did car photography for a luxury auto dealership so I know how to present something and get detail shots everyone is looking for. Just kinda hoping to keep it only at video but your right, might be limiting myself by only doing video!1 point -

Flexibility in scheduling is pretty important to most agents. I am sure there are some who do pretty well on the side, but most agents are going to want to hire someone who can come in at, say, 10:00 am on a Tuesday morning, and have the video ready for them within 24 hours. Not ALL agents will require that, but I think most will. Agents also have a tendency to schedule EVERYONE together. So they will schedule you, AND the stills photographer, AND the gardener, AND the electrician, AND the window washer to all show up at the same time so that you are going to have to work around each other. I once showed up to a gig and their were four of the Molly Maids (house cleaners) that showed up at the same time. The agent just wanted to get everything done in a hurry so they scheduled everyone for the same time.1 point -
I don't expect gimbal results, i don't even expect GH5 results. I expect a sensor that isn't jumping around for no good reason. For sure, knocking a camera around will introduce jumps in the very best of sensor stabilization units. But doing smooth movements like i did should yield better results.1 point

@Brother great test that confirms what I’ve noticed in the previews - cancelled my preorder. I really hope they can fix this with firmware, otherwise the X-T3 seems like a bargain. Nice to hear about the (good) heat managment as well. Heja Sverige1 point -
Got mine yesterday so haven't had the time to do a proper test but Fuji IBIS is still weird. Included some shots of it in a video. It's like the software locks on to something and then realizes the camera is still moving and compensates by moving the sensor with a quick jump. Contacted Fuji about this and they said it was the first time they heard about it, strange... Did test the overheating, 3 x 30 min 4k 50p h265 200mbps was not a problem in a 22 degree room.1 point

1/2.3" is like a Pentax Q, and some people like @Mattias Burling can show off what that sensor can do pretty well. A small sensor doesn't mean a bad image. D-mount lenses have a character all of their own. I think we'll be seeing more sensor sizes, more modules, more mounts in future... And an exciting explosion in at-home camera building and image processing. If you combine something like Magic Lantern and Digital Bolex, with rapid prototyping for body designs and nice ergonomics - wooden grips, and so on, you have the recipe for a very usable DIY cine camera indeed!1 point -
