What a gem this camera is. I always get distracted by what else is coming out - GFX 100, SL2, X-T4, and the list goes on. But when I look at my footage shot in Asia and Berlin on the GH2, I realised how effective locked down shots are with manual focus. Back when we had to use a tripod... Even the slightest shake is a distraction. There was no racking or AF during a shot either, that just ruined things. This was before follow focuses were common on mirrorless cameras... and the AF, well, it was useful for AF-S to lock off a subject and then you'd record and keep it there. I continue to come back to the S1 because it is the spiritual successor to the GH2. It's not expensive (well, compared to an S1H or cine camera) so it's aimed at the same people. It's relatively small, smaller than an C200 or FS5 for example which are the smallest popular cine cameras. It has a very good battery and huge EVF. The IBIS is tip top. The image in V-LOG, 10bit 150Mbit astounding, yet the file sizes remain much smaller than 400Mbit ALL-I. The 4K 10bit image quality difference to the S1H hardly exists. The ability to load a LUT onto the live-view display and shoot with your favourite one - what other mirrorless camera does that for £1500?! It is amazing in low light, it's full frame, and you can leave the tripod at home. I would take either over the X-T4 as it stands, good though that is. Now the GFX 100 is marvellous... but it's £8k even used! The SL2 would be wonderful if it actually shot 4K without the battery error, so that ruins that. The Sony A7 III is fine, but the image just doesn't hold a candle to the S1. So putting autofocus to one side and just shooting nice stuff the classic way... there is no better tool than the S1. If you want to use manual lenses with IBIS and shoot 4K 10bit LOG, the S1 is the best camera out there, especially for the price. Although the Sigma Fp doesn't have the same amount of features or an EVF, or yet a LOG profile, I rate that highly as well. Will do a round up of all the current cameras soon on EOSHD.

The monitoring output on the S2K is VGA if I remember correctly so it is likely a custom/lashup version of a small monitor. In more contemporary times he has been sporting a pair of Carl Zeiss Cinemizer OLED glasses.

Hallo friends, I won´t bother with a SI2K Mini due to lack of opportunity. But this has been bugging me ever since Cesar Charlones photograph hit my eye. Unfortunately I missed out a big opportunity to ask Cesar Charlone himself at Camerimage last year when he was sitting right behind me: What in the name of mankind is this awesome tiny monitor / EVF you were wearing? I was researching about master Charlones movie sets. Was enlarging BTS photos, was doing my google research tricks. Nothing. No insight found. It is not a Cineroid, which would be way too bulky. It is a phantom. What a DP and what a kewl EVF! So dear lens nerds and camera geeks, what is that EVF or monitor that was in Cesar Charlones box, whenever he put it away from his eye? Wholeheartedly agreeing about the S1. Owned it for a couple of months, sold it because I was a bit of a cunt with regards to the autofocus, but no other full frame mirrorless I’ve had or tried offer the same tank like build quality and gorgeous output. A gem of a camera for sure.

My start was with a hacked GH1. The bummer was that the pictures it took looked like they came from a movie camera, but when you recorded to 1080p it lost the high dynamic range look of the photos. I’m glad the days of the Panasonic hacks and 8 bit recording are over. Give me a GH5 in internal 10bit 4:2:2 and I can get a good image in a studio environment. Give me a Pocket 6k with 12 bit BRAW and I can get a good image out doors in day light and night time in low light as well. All. hail Tester 13 and his GH1 hack... that was when we were living the Indy film making dream. Just add some Loma Anamorphic lenses to the GH1 and you get this:

Lighting is coming along in very exciting ways, so I couldn’t resist dipping into more research. I came across a company I never knew about called Nanlite, who are in the same ballpark as Aputure but also have RGB LED tubes. Crazy high TLCI across the range at 98! Anybody used their products? The rest of the internet loves them. Cane across a budget Aputure called Godox too. Super affordable. Aputure themselves looking strong! Looking to build a new, quite portable and nimble lighting setup after Covid has buggered off. Thoughts? Experiences? I’m listening.

It looks like a BNC connector but that doesn't necessarily mean its SDI and in this case it will be regular analogue composite video. If you trace the cable down it disappears below the bottom of the photograph where I would suspect there to be a VGA>Composite converter taking VGA from the camera to it and the same cable can also carry the power to it. In which case the monitor itself could be anything from a repurposed CCTV check monitor to a reversing camera screen which they have then lashed a loupe to. So whilst it looks intriguing in the picture, there is likely a bit of a mess that you can't see and the quality itself may not be all that but probably adequate for the job in hand at that time. There is nothing to stop you lashing your own equivalent version together for modern cameras with a reversing camera screen etc, a loupe and an HDMI>Composite converter for probably under €40-50. Converting to composite will give you the advantage of having a much thinner and more flexible cable running up to your eye than HDMI would. I think the Cinemizer glasses are around €600 but have seen them on eBay for less than half that. Considering VR headsets like the Oculus Go or PSVR are under €200 even those prices seem steep.

Indeed. Just for FD mount though. You can get the lens for less than 20 usd. I also have the version with separate focus and zoom rings, which I think is preferred. It is creamy and still pleasantly resolving. Highly recommanded. My FD adapter is from cieco, an adapter manufactor from Poland. It is pretty unique in not having a locking ring like the other FD adapters have. Beautifully build.

WTH lack of love for that, c'mon, and yes, DR is nothing but just another tool, no more no less. They can surely offer much good looking outcome, for Christ's sake, take a look on these recent entries from your contest... Other than aliasing when not under control or a bit of moiré for water shots -- horses for courses... are they bad by any chance? : ) That Hills Green piece made my wish to watch the whole thing BTW : -)

Looking back on some of my oldest GH1 footage before the hack, the compression is horrific. Looks like a webcam! After the hack it looks much better, but still softer than the GH2. The GH2 really stepped things up, and out of the box before the hack looked much better. I disagree that you can't get nice results outside in natural light with both of the cameras, though.... Dynamic range is not up to V-LOG on the S1 today of course, but dynamic range is not always the answer to cinematic looking composition. It's not the magic bullet. I like a high contrast look very often. The Pocket 6K image is nice, sure but the V-LOG 10bit on the S1 goes toe to toe with it codec-wise... yet the overall look is much nicer, thanks to the much larger sensor, better low light and the more pleasant shooting experience.

Because of the price, I looked into the 4' Nanlite RGB tubes but remember some reviews saying they were underpowered. And the Quasar Science tubes had just gone on sale so I went with those and have been very happy.

Yes. Years ago when i used Pentax DSLRs I was after a manual focus 2.8 mid range zoom but they were always beyond me. When i could afford one, this was one of the lenses i was looking at but they are rare and the ones that were available to me were pretty much all from Japan and had issues (EG fungus). The best I could do was the Tamron 70-210 3.5 (model 19ah) a lovely lens but big as well as a heap of slower manual focus zooms (mostly not worth much). I have been broke for the last few years and got rid of many of my old lenses but can MAYBE afford a new AF portrait lens for my A7s soonish (either that or a Canon RP) so was looking for one but then kept going and came across this and it sat there for a week or more in near mint condition for $150 Australian FD mount. The few photos i have seen from it have wonderful bokeh and it seems it MIGHT be a fantastic portrait lens but pretty poor for some other uses (IE can have a lot of fringing and does not tolerate bright light sources in front flare wise). I any event, I think it is worth it to FINALLY see what i was after for so long. Should turn up in a few days, If someone made an auto focus version of this I would KILL for it.

The Godox LS series are excellent value lights. I saw they just released a more professional, but still much more affordable, series of lights that I'm looking at. We're becoming quite spoiled when it comes to lighting!

ML isn't dead hahaha, it's the same as always. Yes. It's not a port any developers are working on. You need to have that specific camera and want to invest time in it, right now no one has taken that task up.

That camera shoot out was one of the factors which pushed me towards buying the Panasonic GH1 (because I was too broke as a film school student to buy the new GH2). Is that the Tokina? Interesting, I hadn't heard of it before, the 60-120mm focal range is an unusual one for a f2.8 zoom! http://www.rokkorfiles.com/60-120mm.htm It is a pity that the flagship GH series no longer costs $700, instead it was released at 3x that price! Yes, please spend more on audio than on new camera bodies 😉

Yeah, definitely no the camera for great in-camera audio control. I always record externally so it's not an issue for me. You can get an adapter cable for direct(ish) XLR, but you'd have to figure out how to cable manage that--I don't know if I'd want heavy XLR connectors hanging off that little Lemo port. Or you could get a small mixer of some sort, which is really more a bandaid than anything else. I'd love to see some actual numbers on the rolling shutter on the S6 and F6. If I get time I'll do some measurements on the E2 and see if they match C5D's numbers.

On the contrary, ML is thriving. You can't go by that nightly build page, as that is not where the action is. Most of the nightly builds that everyone uses are not official. To spare the expense of buying one, I think you could use a single GH2 if you wanted a video challenge with it. Start with someone who doesn't mind being parted with it for a while, they make a film over two days with it and then they post it on to the next person who does the same over two days and then sends it on etc until it gets back to the original owner. Even for people who don't own any MFT lenses there are plenty of adapters on eBay for under £10 so its not going to break the bank to take part. As forum members are spread out all over the world, it would be quite an interesting project even if the subject was just "one day where I live". If no one fancies parting with their own GH2, it wouldn't exactly be difficult to throw £10 each into the PayPal account of someone trusted to group buy one off eBay. I know of a cheap one for sale in Cairo.
