  1. They knew it existed... but they also knew that their crazed fan base would buy whatever they release. Red are kind of like Jeep. They beat everyone else with their original products - one of the first of it's kind - then cashed in on their reputation and started selling overpriced, unreliable products, but with very focused marketing.

  2. I am having problems with the jog wheel on my 1D X Mark III popping every full 360 degree rotation, so there is a mechanical problem there and my body will be returned for a refund and so this is only a short review. This review also marks a milestone for EOSHD! After 10 years of blog posts, I am going to be doing YouTube now as well! Looking forward to doing MANY a video and growing the channel in a big way. If you'd like to be interviewed, or featured on the channel, do let me know. So the 1D X Mark III then... https://www.eoshd.com/review/canon-1d-x-mark-iii-review-filmmaking-video-and-cinema-camera-get-the-fuji-x-t4-instead/

  3. Weather today was awful and I didn't have much to do, so I grabbed a slider, designed and 3D printed by my friend, put a X-T3 on top, attached a projection lens to it and then took a couple of shots. I sat down to review them and thought: why not add some sound to it, play with it just a little while and actually publish the finished result? So here it is, really short mock-up opening credits I made. Not one of the most elegant timelines, but this have to do for now:

  4. I have just updated my movie "Covid-19 in anamorphic Before and Now" with the end of the lockdown. I'm lucky in a cinematography way because La rue Sainte-Catherine in Bordeaux is a street where wearing a mask is obligatory, so it's very filmic ! AND I am since two weeks an happy owner of an Iscorama Pre-36. All the shots with crowd + mask are shot with it. You will NOTICE too few shots done with a TILT medium lens (Volna-3 80mm 2.8) used as a prime with the Iscorama. Filmed in anamorphics "baby iscorama" Iscomorphot 8/1.5x isco-gottingen iscorama pre-36 1.5x Aivascope pro 1.5x "baby" hypergonar 1.75x + slr magic rangefinder bolex moller anamorphot 16/32 1.5x before : from 2012 to 2020 now : june the 5th, 2020 during the time of covid-19 La rue Sainte-Catherine is the longuest pedestrian street in europe, 1km250. It's located in Bordeaux, south west of France. Each day thousands of bordelais and tourists from all over the world walk in this street. Since the 17th march 2020, lockdown has been in place in france. This street has never been so empty. This is a run and gun, street video style, a hommage to the bordelais. It's a mix of archives, filmed in anamorphic, from 2012 to nowadays, this covid-19 time. One day all the crowds will come back to la rue Sainte-Catherine, Bordeaux, France. Let's enjoy life and people through these contemplative moments.

  6. I put my thoughts into a YouTube review. This is my first one, but one of MANY! Please don't expect too much The video also compares it to: Fuji X-T4 Panasonic S1H and S1 Fuji GFX 100 I won't spoil the conclusion for you. There is some Formula One bonus footage at the end from the GFX 100, and a show-stopping problem with my 1D X III.

  8. Is bad rolling shutter going to be that facepalm moment for the R5? There’s got to be a serious flaw somewhere. Im going to predict in 8K that it’s bad and in 4k it will be acceptable. Roll on July. p.s how’s the XT4 IBIS? Still warpy?

  9. Haha I called out the rolling shutter on Feb 1st. Personally it's a dealbreaker for me. It'd work fine as a static B-cam, but if you're not doing serious photo work I think it's hard to justify.

  10. Man, everything I've seen by you pops up out from there so splendid that any dust coming is cinematic... hehe ; ) But I meant on your rig this time : ) Just curious (E : -)

Cool idea. If you can put some xmas lights in the background it will help show the qualities of the bokeh, in terms of shape and also if they have soft/harsh edges or if they have the 'bubble bokeh' that many love but I find very distracting. If it's too bright for xmas lights then maybe a couple of laps with naked bulbs might do the trick? Getting a good way to nail focus when you are in the shot is a challenge - I suggest something like a stand with a target on it that you can swap in to focus and out again when you're shooting. In the absence of a colour chart, getting a range of colours in there would be useful - if you have some ornamentation or some bright clothes or even just buy a packet of balloons and blow up one of each. Anything so that colour shifts and saturation can be seen.

    1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6

I think you are being unfair labelling every one on this forum as some sort of fantasist demanding that exact spec for under $2000 as the reality is very few of us would want the 10 inch screen

    1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6

So if you don't need RAW or 5.5k but you want FF, AF and 10 bit, good for you as there are many more alternatives (exactly 3 🙂 ): - FX9 11'000 USD, 21 ms RS - C500 II 16'000 USD, 16 ms RS - C700FF 33'000 USD Suddenly 6500 USD camera is almost a bargain ..... but yeah RS in FF with AF is bad, no ND, no XLR, etc.... You don't need AF then you have a few more choices below 6'500 usd (exactly 1) - SH1 (at 6k the rolling shutter is not great either, 29.7!!, and at 4k 24.2). If you don't need AF the SH1 is a better camera for video for sure... The reality on this forum is that people expect any camera vendor to offer C500 II spec + 4k 120fps of the C300 III but on FF + the image quality and DR of an Alexa with some kind of lossless fantasy RAW compression 20:1 on really cheap SD cards in a Sigma Fp fan less submergible body with an on body battery that last 12h and a 10'' inch screen and should be below < 2000 USD 🤣😂 and with a coupon with a guarantee to win the Oscar.

  17. Shit. Almost there. Give a guy an hdmi out and we're good to go. While you see trough the evf, someone else can see on an monitor with the hdmi out. The more expensive model previously released has a fan and is noisy... Hope they dont do that mistake again.

  18. Just noticed how Canon announced the camera... https://sg.canon/en/consumer/the-eos-1d-x-mark-iii-uncompromised-photo-video-performance/news Canon Announces the EOS-1D X Mark III, Built for Uncompromised Photo and Video Performance **** Why does Canon think uncompromised video performance means 32ms rolling shutter and no AF in full frame 60p? I think they are taking us for granted.

  19. Absolutely. In all my research on lenses the Lensrentals blog was by far the best resource I found. What I found most interesting is how the data they have publisher on lenses is so often counter to the common-knowledge out there, so in that sense it is even more valuable because it is adding to our understanding and dispelling myths. I'm really looking forward to part 2.

  20. CA is awful and just reminds me of the horrific edges of people against a digitally clipped sky from a low-DR low-bitrate digital camera. I don't have issues with corner softness or vignetting, but wow does CA make an image scream cheap amateur video to me!

  21. If someone wanted something smaller than an Alexa, cheap enough to crash and better image quality than a gopro then they could have just bought a BMPCC or BMMCC. Sounds like they set out to build a camera for a specific task without first phoning up the camera store to see if one existed already.

  25. Yes snow bro I am enlightened now. A sudden new dawn of self reflection is upon me as a result of your wisdom. I have chosen to be that dude you aspire to be. That dude did it in politics and now says whatever he wants lol Before now I was severely limiting myself. But now I can now say what I want, do what I want, even grab a pussy if I want. I embody your values now. Wonderful isn't it.

Dear lens enthusiasts, I plan on doing a showoff of my adapted projection lenses with a little comparison to 'normal' consumer glass. Initial plan was to put the camera on a tripod, put a tiny something around 70 cm in front of it, then have a human subject (most likely me) sit around ~ 2m in front of the camera and, finally, some deep background with just a bit bokeh in it. Rack focus between those three. Time and place of shoot: golden hour, somewhere outside, non-controlled environment. No color charts (I don't have any), no corner-to-corner sharpness tests. Maybe I'll manage to put an anamorphic adapter in there, too. A visualization of what I have in mind (apart from the color chart): Examples taken from this test. Thoughts?

  27. Well there is a possibility that it could do some damage in the pants region if not calibrated correctly. But as this will lead to not being able to have kids then the money saved on raising them can be ploughed into buying more lenses etc so its actually a feature rather than a fault for this audience.

  28. Yeah, just rewatched Ozu's Tokyo Story this weekend - with the exception of one single travelling shot, it's all static tripod shots, using a single 50mm lens!

  29. There is a lot of unmotivated 'convinience' camera work out there today. I am making a 3 legged stand Tarkovsky would not use IBIS for a static shot Kubrick would not dump his Steadicam operator for a gimbal and drone. Some of the gimbal stuff is even worse than IBIS. Movement for the sake of it. No purpose. Tacky. Lazy.

  31. My thoughts: The Takumars have a distinct look to them. The colours are kind of like adding an instagram filter over them, but they also add a kind of filter over the 3-dimensionality of the lens too, kind of giving it a 'look'. I think this might be quite cinematic for some people but to me it removes some of the vibrancy of the real world. I've eliminated them from my options, partly because their focus rings work backwards, but also I want that 3D pop. This is evident even when you compare all the lenses at 5.6 and all of them (except the kit lens) should be in their best aperture range I am eliminating the Mir too. Looking at all of them, the Mir at 2.8 seems to be more stopped down than the others at 2.8. I checked against a few lenses and it appears that the other lenses are consistent with each-other so it doesn't look like I've made a mistake, but rather that the Mir isn't as fast as other lenses at 2.8 (notably, the Konica 40mm with its very similar focal length). Even just looking through the Konica and Mir side-by-side when wide open, the Konica looks closer to double the diameter rather than the 1.4x it should be, so I think the Russians might have been bending the truth a little The Mir is really soft at 2.8, especially compared to other lenses that are stopped-down by a full stop already. The Mir at 2.8 is a lot slower than the Konica or Helios / SB combinations. A normal exposure with the Helios / SB combination at ISO 100, requires ISO 160 from the Konica and ISO 400 from the Mir. Combined with the GH5's ok-but-not-great low-light performance and my shooting in natural light even at night, it's not a good combination. I read that the Mir is Apochromatic and it may well be, but the other lenses are fine on the 2x crop of the GH5 so I don't really see that as being that critical. It's also worse in the corners at 2.8 than the Konica is at 1.8, and also less halation too, so that's more reasons. The m42 speed booster I have seems fine. The Helios SB combo is very smeared in the corners, but the Takumar 55/1.8 doesn't have that problem, so it's the Helios lenses not the SB. Unfortunately if I want the extra performance of the SB I'll need a 50-60mm lens that isn't the Helios or the Takumar. The Konica is an absolutely stunning performer. It has great contrast and sharpness wide open, corners are still sharp (on MFT) The Voigtlander is my main lens and the purpose of these tests are to choose the lens to go with it and my 8mm lens for traveling. Out of the other lenses I have here, the Konica looks like the best overall performer, the Helios+SB combo is one-stop faster but soft in corners, and the Takumar+SB combo leaves me cold and focuses the wrong way. I think it's really a choice between the Konica, buying a fast 50-60mm m42 lens for the m42 SB, or buying a fast 50-60mm lens and a SB for that lens mount. No. Fixed WB on all shots. I just did a little test and you can see the colour shift on the LCD as you adjust the aperture back and forwards.
