Where is the cutting edge of film-making now?
hyalinejim and 2 others reacted to rawshooter for a topic
The rules are three-act narratives (preferably with a hero's journey) on 100 script pages, shot/countershot blocking, continuity editing etc.etc. The breakers and benders today are filmmakers like Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Werner Herzog, David Lynch, Harmony Korine, Nicolas Winding Refn, Abbas Kiarostami, Michel Gondry, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lars von Trier, Hayao Miyazaki, Bela Tarr, Gaspar Noé, Kim Ki-duk, George Miller, Joshua Oppenheimer, Guillermo Del Toro, Miranda July...3 points -

Also Pablo Larrain's Ema. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.indiewire.com/2019/04/long-days-journey-into-night-bi-gan-interview-3d-long-take-1202057813/amp/ In addition to Rawshooter's fantastic list. I woul like to mention filmmakers; Roy Andersson, Sion Sono, Claire Denis, Leo's Carax and yorgos lanthimos.2 points -

Dirt cheap lights that are actually good
tupp reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
When I started out, I had barely any budget for lights and bought 3 X 800w redheads for £120. They sparked when I plugged them in, burnt my hands and melted all my gels in like 2 minutes. But they played a huge role regardless. Since I’ve only had pretty expensive lights... Dedolight, Kino Flo and Lupolux to name a few. But as I’m now on the search for a very portable setup, couldn’t resist seeing what’s super dirt cheap and actually decent for a bit of fun. Cane across a brand called GVM (rather humorously called Great Video Maker). They make RGB Panels (like the 50RS) for hardly any money and only seeing very positive reviews. Tempted to try one for a laugh. What other dirt cheap lights do you use that are actually good?1 point -

I'm not saying that I... ugh. What I mean is... hmm... lol. @kye knows what I mean. I'm an audio-engineer, first, by training. I have multiple DACs, interfaces, passive and active monitor switchers, three sets of mixing monitors, etc.... I used to use my old HP workstation laptop for referencing, then my 17" MBP, but don't on my 15" MBP. When I see Apple and Microsoft ads showcasing their hardware with someone doing critical recording or mixing work without all the accoutrements, I cry a little. Still like what I hear coming out of those MBP speakers -I just don't trust what's coming out of them. That's all.1 point

1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6
UncleBobsPhotography reacted to TheBoogieKnight for a topic
Hmm maybe I'm confused. As far as I saw it, if it's 2X skipped and binned, 1/4 of the light is reaching the same sensor area (fewer photo sites are used) compared to oversampling from the full sensor. I realise that each individual pixel is getting the same amount of light with skipping/binning, but you're losing the oversampling which would be taking 4 pixels and combining them into one, effectively giving two stops lower noise. I can get that exact same lower noise benefit by shooting with a 2 stop wider aperture. If I do this with skipping/binning, I'd reduce my DOF 2 stops. If I do this with a crop, I have to step back (or use a wider focal length) which means I get that DOF back to where it was. Of course oversampling has other advantages, but you're going to lose them with both binning/skipping and a crop.1 point -
1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6
TheBoogieKnight reacted to UncleBobsPhotography for a topic
Line skipping looses light compared with supersampling because fewer photo sites are used and therefore fewer photons are recorded. If you skip every second line, only half the photo sites will be recorded. Using supersampling you would average out 2 photo sites for each pixel (or something smarter) and would therefore get less noise. The exposure should be the same, but line skipping should in theory lead to more noise and moire/aliasing than supersampling. Cropping should in theory give the same noise as line-skipping, but potentially with less moire/aliasing. Have in mind that actual camera performance can differ a bit from how it should work in theory, which Sony has proven. The word "binning" has been used both as "throwing the photo site in the bin" and "binning together the recordings of several photo sites". The first version is the same as line-skipping while the second is basically a crude form of supersampling. EDIT: Your post was in relation to the line " I hope they add a crop mode. At least then you can get the same DOF without losing a ton of light.". The BoogieKnight is actually correct, because he mention the same DOF. Using a cropped readout and a faster and wider lens you would end up with cleaner image with the same DOF as lineskipping and a slower/longer lens.1 point -

One ultra-modern film for me is "Otto e mezzo" by Fellini. Maybe even more advanced to it's time than 2001 Space Odissey.1 point -
I took the question more literally. Projected virtual sets make for a near perfect visual product. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUnxzVOs3rk My next move is to put a VR headset on my camera to rotate my green screen set when my camera pans and tilts 😉 ... does this already exist in the form of capturing gyroscopic data as it relates to the camera position (like steady xp) and then be being able to drive the rotation/pan and tilt of a 360 degree video or virtual rendered set in computer. I have not done the research. Someone please school me on this topic if you know about it. Thanks!1 point

I can confirm Canon did not give me one In my opinion they are hiding something and probably the usual shills will gloss over the shortcomings. Rolling shutter, pixel binning, over heating, the lot probably.1 point -

So this leaves more attention for the famous EOSHD list of the less well known youtubers. Should become a sticky topic: https://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/35846-lesser-known-youtube-channels-people-should-know-about How about this guy. The Iggy Pop of youtube camera craze. Love the straighfowardness and his own kind of realness and also mellow cheesyness. Still plenty to see for the minute. Google's YouTube monopoly

Yes sure I blame them, why wouldn't I? With great power comes great responsibility. If you have a monopoly over the internet you should do your best not to abuse it for the bottom line at every opportunity.1 point -
AF Adapter Development Thread - Sneakest of Sneak Peeks
Silverwings007 reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
Yes, its the PBC that does the work driving the lens via the camera so it is exactly the same as it is now with the difference being that it translates the distance position from the AF adapter against the calibration points it has for the lenses. What could possibly go wrong1 point -
Photo by Fibonacci Blue Will Smith said recently that racism isn't increasing - the difference is that it's being photographed and filmed - now we realise just how much of it there is. If it wasn't for the filming of George Floyd's murder by a policeman, it may never have come to light in public. All of us who have a camera, smartphone or online presence should keep this flame alive and shine a light on the truth wherever it confronts us. Important photos and videos must never be censored. However when a long-time DPReview forum contributor tried to share his photos of the George Floyd protests in Minneapolis, he was immediately censored. I have also been subject to censorship on the DPReview forum (my URL is banned completely) so I know what it's like to have your voice silenced from a community. Andrew, mate, and I am even abstaining of any comment in that struggle in those threads out there, go figure! LOL No likes, nothing. More fuel to the thing, why? I believe these boards must chill out. I personally don't like to read any personal attacks, let alone to you or anyone else. I humbly think you're not in the best of your moods tonight : ) and no matter the divergence we can all have to each other (I don't mean you and me but any of us), we are all different people, we cannot expect to see from someone else's keyboard what we'd like to read or write instead. You're the only webmaster, we are all here for fun, after all, no other pay off : -) That my post in this thread is about the topic I believe the majority of us appreciate to read from you: cameras related. No secondary (mis)interpretation(s). So, you open this thread. My wonder: why and what single advantage you're willing to show us with that combo? Sincerely interested to hear/read/spot your finds. Hence my comment before. Is it really worthy? Nothing against photos of more gear as further add-ons to our rigs. But you should be blamed for your incentive to more purchases, you know? : D BTW any plans to post some footage of that GFX 100 Ninja V you decide now to tease your guests? Be careful with that mouth watering : P Hard to be indifferent to your posts, provocative publisher... hehe Please keep this beloved forum (so yours, I consider it a bit mine or ours as well) as friendly as ever. Keep up the best of your good word, thanks man and enough deep pockets, shame on that ; -) Let's be positive and avoid private yadda yadda, especially when ends bitter and nonsense then. Life is too precious to be wasted. - E.1 point

bizarrely i find it easier to dual focus using it on the canon 60d shooting photos is easier, the video aspect is a little soft. Putting it on the p4k and dual focusing is / or has been painful. However that may have been my eyes and had issues with headaches recently which hasnt helped. I think i have the headaches sorted now or at least they have settled down. taking lens wise i have been using pentax m42 85mm f1.9 and other lenses in various focal lens and some other weird lenses like the nikon 63 enlarger lens. on the p4k. From memory i can go down to 40mm focal length before it vignettes. 35mm vignettes but may still be usable if i crop, yet to try that. Im desperately trying to save for a fvd16, i talked to someone at rapido and the the fvd16 will fit the elmoscope type 1. Getting the fvd 35 would have been a bridge too far at the moment at double the price, so thats the next step. I have pretty much chronicled my journey in a thread called p4k adventures, not much video footage but there's more info there i guess. hope that helps1 point

Indeed : ) And if Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan is typically the finest example for high shutter speed creative use from Janusz Kaminski's tip, Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (cinematographed by the Aussie Dean Semler) is the opposite for a 360 degree shutter or open shutter, that is, double motion blur when a video smear look ends as purpose. Just for our matter of taste on the basis of need, function and alike. Not everyone sees it in the same way, no matter what. We can't all share the same yellow colour in point of fact. a7RII release, as for instance, came along its slower shutter speed capability in video mode beyond the 360º shutter as a very special hybrid acquisition experiment tool as you wish (I am used to shoot both video and stills with my Blackmagic Pocket series in 2020). Here's Dan Chung's sample: https://indietips.com/shutter-speed-and-shutter-angle-explained/1 point
