Check our music video shot with the Lumix S1 and BMPCC4K

Hey, so I had the Lumix S1 and the P4K for a while and this project was great to test it. I love the image coming out from the S1 (shot everything to V-Log, 10bit), but the BMDraw held up so much better in the grading process. I believe we shot everything to 8:1 RAW, 60fps than conformed it to 24. All the band performances and non-slowmo stuff was shot with the S1 + Samyang VDSLR lenses, mostly 50mm, wide open at T1.5. All speedramped stuff was shot with the P4K. The ligting setup was fairly simple: Band performance: 2x Photo-R COB lights with softboxes + backlight Jury: Aputuer 300D + Lightdome + backlights Stage performances: 300D + fresnel (which I regret now a bit, maybe a softer light would be much better) + 2800K rimlights. We also used prisms to add some sweetness and surreal feel to the image. The whole video was shot in one place, in maybe 14 hours with a crew of 4 people (dir, dp, 1st ac, grip). I edited everything in Premiere Pro than spent weeks and months to grade it with lumetri. By the time I got familiar with resolve, so I exported everything to Resolve and graded it in maybe 2 days. Still not perfect, but still better than what I've got from premiere. Anyways, let me know what you think Don't get confused with the multilingual intro, turn on the subtitles please (we did everything to do a proper translation đ ). Cheers!2 points -

The New Panasonic G100 âvloggingâ Camera to launch June 24th

Honestly looks like a LUMIX Alpha (DfD edition!) but with competent IBIS. Not sure why you would buy this over ZV-1 if it doesnât have 10-bit vlogl. EM5III seems like a better buy.1 point -
Odd not 4K60p, when any smartphone without mention Osmo Pocket and alike have it...1 point

Probably 8 bit V-Log L. Not usable if so and pretty much a G90 in a slightly smaller housing.1 point

These days, as long as the camera has a decent codec with good bit rate, you can pretty easily color match cameras when using a gray/white card or, even better, a color checker card. Using the color checker in Resolve gets you very, very close. You might just have to make a couple tweaks, but it's pretty quick and easy.1 point -
For anyone that hasn't used it, that 12-32mm kit lens is a very good performer albeit not that fastest and does have OIS. On the downside, there is no manual focus control (other than via the app or touchscreen) so vloggers best hope the face detect AF works !1 point

I second what @heart0less said. If you expose and WB both cameras then you can shoot a colour checker with both of them afterwards and broadly work out how to make one look like the other. Good colour grading advice I got from someone once was that cameras don't have to match - they just have to match closely enough so that the differences aren't distracting, like "they're from the same universe".1 point -

Oh! What a great idea! Thank you TBH, i was so focused on shotmatching, i did not realised these mistakes. We shot everything on the native ISOs, yet still a huge amount of noise were present which was very noticeable after the heavy grading, so I had to denoise it, than the image become mushy and very soft. I added some 35mm filmgrain to highlights and midtones but maybe I should add even more. The s1 footage really hates the denoiser and sharpening, the p4k was kind of okay with it. Thanks for y'all comments I'm grateful for your feedback.1 point -

Is there any chance you could get a color checker and record it with both of your cameras at the same time? Note that both cameras need to be properly exposed and white balanced.1 point -

Congrats! This is a solid piece. I really liked the tune and I think the visuals matched it very well. Kudos for being able to uphold it for over 5 minutes without making it repetitive and boring. Cross-cutting definitely helped. Regarding lighting: in my opinion it's on point, wouldn't change anything myself. Stage lighting might be quite harsh, but this makes it believable and solid. Grading looks awesome. Beautifully enhances your set production. Though I noticed some small issues with clipped colors, like those blue blobs and pink highlights: You mentioned using Resolve, so I can wholeheartedly recommend adding a node at the end with 'Gamut Limiter' Effect (it's a built-in effect). It should fix it. Another thing that didn't quite match my taste was overall sharpness. The footage looks like you added a tiny bit too much digital sharpening to it. It's especially visible during the opening shot in the plastic wrap you used to secure the mic boom. IMHO, a soft look would nicely complement the tone you set. Once again: great work and thanks for sharing!1 point -

small update, a fvd-16a has been ordered. So i presume in 3-4 weeks perhaps 5 weeks, i hope to be joining the ranks of those who have a single focus solution. i'm kinda excited1 point -

The auto focus on the GH5 and G9, after the updates, are both usable for vlogging. The perception though, and the fact that their competitors have better AF overall, is what kills them. It's really too bad, because pretty much everything else is prefect. While it's an overblown complaint, it's really crazy that they're sticking with DFD. Even Olympus has figured it out. The E-M1 mk II has PDAF after that update they released, right? I've been looking at it as an option for specialized uses, given the used prices are pretty good.1 point -

Fuji X-T4

If anything they have been pushing video quite hard since XT-3. I really do think, since they added IBIS to the XT series, that the XH series will lean in to video. Theyâve already said they want it to do something different, and the XT4 has obviously slotted into what the XH1 offered. A potential XH2 could have a bigger, chunkier body which adds to ergonomics for video. Add in IBIS, beefy codec, new ASPC sensor, mini XLR, maybe SDI, Fuji colors and Flog. Better AF. Maybe high resolution tilt screen instead of a flip screen. An external monitor is better for sit down head shots or YouTube anyway. You wouldnât vlog with it. Thatâs what an XT4 is for now. Could be a real competitor to C100 or C200 for the hipsters đ1 point -
another interesting test from my favorite Korean youtuber Actual comment at 03:50: "I did 3 tests. What survived the harsh test was only the NX1 that was shooting these cameras." I would like to see Fuji give as something more video orientated. I am not sure why they haven't yet but I believe it is coming.1 point

The Shure SM57 isn't a mic you should be booming out of shot, just have it viewable on screen instead if you're going to be using it. You could pick up a secondhand Sound Devices MP-1 for the same cost. Spend the extra hundred bucks: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1513937-REG/deity_microphones_s_mic_2s_shotgun_microphone.html It's a cardioid though, so a broader pick up pattern than the OP wants I'd presume if he's just interviewing a single seated subject on camera.1 point

Generally, the darker the image, the more the saturation. Furthermore, most digital cameras give a lot of saturation in their non-raw files, and Canon cameras additionally boost the reds. Starting with the brightest sample posted, the image below was yielded merely by boosting the gamma/mid-tones, bringing the blacks down to zero, reducing the saturation and backing off the reds (for Canon): If one wants to keep it a little darker (and still have it look like daytime), be more gentle in boosting the mid-tones but further reduce the saturation, and keep the blacks at zero and keep the Canon reds reduced as in the image directly above: By the way, the fringing/chromatic-aberration doesn't look too bad, and a light touch with a CA/fringe filter should take care of it nicely.1 point

Cool video and solid technique. The biggest thing I have taken away from the professional colourists is that they have have mastered the basics, and most of the time they don't do anything fancy and don't have to. They typically only have to get fancy when there were issues with how something was shot and they have to correct problems, so that completely lines up with that video, where the DP does basics to check they haven't stuffed things up.1 point

Cool discussion so far, and a few notes from me: like @PannySVHS says - first one so who cares! Congrats for getting the gig, shooting it, getting an edit together and publishing. It takes more guts than people think to actually get things done and get them out into the world than people think, so total respect for that. I'm completely out of touch with what is in style these days (actually, who am I kidding, I was never in touch with it lol) but I can say I definitely enjoyed it, the song was great and your video seemed to match. What I mean by that is that you had a concept (daydream), you had a style (kind of retro vibe), you made framing and editing decisions, and the band made a bunch of decisions when writing the song, and for me they all matched. As someone who has learned a lot by just shooting many projects, I can give some thoughts on how to get better and develop your style.. which is to work out what worked well and what could be improved next time, and the three sources of that information should be the client, the target audience, and you. I'd suggest that you concentrate on only one or two major things to improve before your next project. Obviously little things can be addressed, but if you focus on too many things then firstly you're not focussing, and secondly you'll get depressed about how many things could be improved and you're less likely to do another one. So pick a few things that worked really well, and one or two things to work on, and actively try to include them in your next one. My last thought is just to say that you should do as many projects as you can. There are a bunch of things that we only learn by doing over and over and after a while certain patterns will reveal themselves and we'll understand that something we do in prep has a certain impact in post. Great stuff!!1 point

first music video, who cares! great music video! fits the music perfectly. besides that it is a showcase of cinematic talent behind and infront of the camera. colors, shot design, editing, rhythm within and between the shots, the whole experience, spiffy! A bit much grainyness sometimes for my taste, if digital. Who cares! Professional quality with a unique style and a unique video. Lovely.1 point

After doing some testing, I've recorded some raw rgb video, but have no way of viewing it. Does anyone know what to do with this kind of data? Over on the RPi forum they suggest this software, but it's only for viewing. You can't export, so you can't use the files with any other software, which seems a shame. (It's also âŹ30 for mac. I don't want to pay anything if it doesn't help me actually use the footage) https://www.offminor.de/ If anyone's interested, there's a few samples below. They're shot with my 25mm cctv lens, which on this sensor is very tele. It's the only c-mount lens I have and until finish my project, it's the only lens I can use... It's a soft lens at the best of times so keep that in mind when viewing. FYI: The .rgb file is raw data. I'd love to work out how to view this in a coherent way - or convert it into DNG frames. The .264 files are straight out of the pi before any wrapping. You can only view these in VLC (as far as I know) The .mkv files are unadjusted conversions to h.265 - this is only for viewing the files in an NLE The 4x3 file was a stress test for how large a frame I could make using the basic settings.
