MFT will continue to produce fantastic images and videos for many years to come (indefinitely?). With such a rich ecosystem, it's hard to believe that it'll ever be "dead". I suppose Olympus selling its imaging business is way better than them just closing it. Maybe, there's hope. I currently have a lot of Olympus gear and I'm quite happy with it. I got away from full-frame stuff due to it being too big, heavy, and expensive for the results it got me. Not much better than MFT (for the money).3 points -

Jip is not a company that will continue building cameras or lenses - they buy up brands like "Vaio" from Sony to sublicense them for cheap no-name products. The brand Olympus will stay with Olympus for the (now) core business of medical equipment. Olympus imaging brands such as OM-D, Zuiko and Pen will soon appear on smartphones, selfie sticks and the like, ending up like Polaroid and Rollei did before. Olympus' camera technology is now history, like Yashica/Contax in the past.2 points -
Very sad, I really loves Olympus lenses. Such great optics. As for the sales and business side, it must be a nightmare to manage that sort of company when your market has been shrinking by 10% per year for so long. It's interesting to compare how Kodak and Fuji managed a similar market crash 20 years ago. I wrote a detailed piece on this: https://petapixel.com/2018/10/19/why-kodak-died-and-fujifilm-thrived-a-tale-of-two-film-companies/ (respectfully, feel fee to remove this link, I don't want to spam) I'm afraid they Olympus sold to who ever they could under the pressure of the shareholders. And now, who's next? Can the pro and prosumer market sustains all the current camera manufacturers? Canon, Sony, and Pana can rely on their other business divisions but companies like Nikon are very isolated and photo-centered.1 point

What I meant to say is that significantly underexposed shots (regardless of camera) are harder to grade, and I seem to get more saturation and the colors tend to shift a bit.1 point -

Born Again - a passion project shot on the old BMPCC

Hey guys, I wanted to share a film with you that I just finished and released. It is also a project I've been very passionate about, as it is the retelling of a true story. A short excerpt out of the life of a good friend of mine. A while ago a severe fire destroyed many houses inside the neighborhood of San Andres, Manila. Everything was raised to the ground. My friend took literally his destiny in his own hands and they were able to rebuild the houses just by them and the community. Everything was shot handheld on the OG Pocket, with the old MFT-Speedbooster and a vintage Nikol 35mm f2 and a very old Nikol 50mm f1.4. No artificial light, was really like run and gun. I shot all formats, CinemaDNG, ProRes - even LT - depending on how much space was left on the SD card. This little thing was really a workhorse! The archival footage is from different mobile phones. I hope you like the film! Enjoy1 point -

Driving home yesterday I saw a woman out walking with a bright orange coat and I realised that the scene before me was pretty much how the camera rendered the wedding shot in Italy - everything very low in saturation except a few spots of radical colour that basically don't look real. I guess that's how the real world actually looks. It's not how the world looks in most videos, and it's definitely not how we experience the world. I've had issues before with trying to get my blacks to sit at the right level. It seems like the difference between crushed and instagram-retro is less than the thickness of a human hair. Maybe I need to apply a node that boosts the signal by 10x then go through my whole timeline to equalise everything out and then remove the 10X node again. I sometimes do that with saturation, having a node that radically saturates the whole timeline and then I can look at all the thumbnails and see any clips that have an obviously different WB, which I can then fix and remove the node again. I'm committing every sin in the violinist shot. Underexposing a mixed-lighting scene with an 8-bit camera in log using a codec with a low bitrate..... in slow-motion. This specific shot taught me the value of higher bitrates and 10-bit colour. Unfortunately, this is what real-life actually looks like, but the problem is that it's not how we perceive the real-world, and due to the technical limitations involved I can't get this shot to even remotely how it looked to me at the time. Yes, that looks more neutral. The issue is that this isn't remotely how the scene looked in real life. My frustration is that I can completely remove all colour issues by simply reducing the saturation to zero, but the target aesthetic of this piece was that it was a happy occasion and Italy is a colourful place. The grade above simply doesn't match that aesthetic, being closer to a bleach bypass look for a desolate film rather than a colourful look for a happy rom-com. For context, this trip to Italy was part of my honeymoon! Thanks for outlining your process, I'll have to replicate it and have a play. You think that the S1 shot would have been harder to grade? That surprises me, considering that my GH5 was a breath of fresh air after trying to grade the XC10 footage for a couple of years. My experience of watching colour grading videos online with footage from five-figure cine cameras was that you can raise the levels up and up and up and they just scale up but otherwise look completely fine, rather than pulling things up a bit and being presented with awful hues and terrible artefacts. The GH5 feels exactly the same way in post as that - it just scales up without any drama. I can understand the a6500 not doing so well though. I guess I don't want to force a shot that doesn't exist, but it did exist, the camera just failed to capture it even remotely the way that it was, in reality. I've found the GH5 to be far more forgiving of difficult lighting. Mind you, had I used the XC10 4K mode then it might have been a different story due to the higher resolution and bitrate of three times more bits per pixel, or 12 times more bits per frame. Yeah, very Canon. I really do make life difficult for myself by shooting in the worst possible conditions! lol, I immediately thought of vodka, but perhaps you should be adding tequila? Not too sure what the YT upload was at, but the frames I posted above were 720 to be a bit easier to view in the thread. Here's the CLog still at the original resolution: The 1080p is pretty soft, and the 1080p50 even more-so. I exported the PNG above and a TIFF file and swapping back and forth between them shows very little difference. For reference, here's another CLog shot from the video, PNG at 4K:1 point -

I think I'll ride out the Olympus downfall and probably pick up another one or two of their cameras on the cheap as their brand devalues and their gear pops up on the used market. I just bought a EM10iii new for a pittance. Imagine I'll be able to do the same with a EM5III, E-M1 MII, or E-M1X in the not too distant future. For me, I can still see using their bodies for another handful of years. I've followed a lot of discontinued products over the cliff in this profession. In the meantime my wife is in the FUJI space, so migrating to them for video will be easy enough. The image/colors her XPRO2 spits out of the camera are impressive.1 point -

Very bad news indeed. All their best engineers will probably be leaving. What is their loss, may end up being a big gain for other camera manufacturers including Panasonic. As for the decision to sell to JIP. Incredibly unimaginative. There are a lot of other players who could have turned around the Olympus camera division. Chinese companies, American, maybe even Sigma or Samsung could have been interested in the assets and staff. Whereas who wants to work for JIP? The E-1X and E-M1 III will go down in history as the final Olympus cameras. If you buy one now, it's probably a good time to do so as they probably won't be manufactured for much longer.1 point -
UH OH!! Micro Four Thirds can still have a future, as the completeness of their ecosystem is second to none in the mirrorless world. And they can still give you a far more compact portable travel kit than anybody else, yes even more so than Fujifilm's APS-C (and no, Nikon 1 / Pentax Q systems don't count!). Panasonic does still have the other camera brands of Blackmagic, DJI, Yi, Kinefinity, Z Cam, JVC, etc who play a supporting role as they've been making Micro Four Thirds mount cameras in the past (plus the many many third parties making lenses and other accessories for the MFT ecosystem). However the loss of Olympus who has been there since the earliest days will be a big blow, and does mark the future look a little less rosy.1 point

The auto focus on the GH5 and G9, after the updates, are both usable for vlogging. The perception though, and the fact that their competitors have better AF overall, is what kills them. It's really too bad, because pretty much everything else is prefect. While it's an overblown complaint, it's really crazy that they're sticking with DFD. Even Olympus has figured it out. The E-M1 mk II has PDAF after that update they released, right? I've been looking at it as an option for specialized uses, given the used prices are pretty good.1 point -

Exactly. The exposure needs to be motivated. It is difficult to force shots that don't exist, especially if you're trying to match contrast through out an entire piece. This is why shooting log footage without a LUT gets confusing. Different colors will appear differently depending on how they are exposed, obviously. The Canon, Red, and Arri all make sure green hold saturation even at the top of the image. All the LUTS you will use are probably balanced for a more standard exposure. If you're doing things like pushing highlights and extreme ETTR, you'll run into problems with saturation on certain colors. Looking at your frames makes me want one of these cameras again. I really love how the footage looks. I owned one 3 years ago. I remember I messed with some of the baked in profiles, those looked really nice as well. Maybe Production Standard? I can't remember. I use the C300 Mk2 now so I get them mixed up. The color seemed a bit thicker than if I shot C-LOG and tried to match what a baked in profile was giving me. You can do a lot in post with those files but you need to know what you want to do when you get into the edit. With the violinist, I would assume you'd want to compensate for the under exposure and then maybe throw some sort of "power windows" or gradient exposure on the clouds to keep some of that beautiful blue sky and green trees. With the portrait test shot / you're essentially exposing for the shadows because of how the light is hitting you. If you opened up to your left slightly and had a bit of diffusion, you could drop the whole image down by a few stops and get a more rich / darker background. As is, the light is kind of a back light / side light. Here is what I came up with on the two frames. I don't have resolve, this is just Magic Bullet Looks in Premiere Pro. I don't have a color checker, but your WB is great so it's not that difficult to just level it out and tweak a few color with the HSL sliders. I did my best to try to match the two frame just for fun.1 point -

All good ideas. For my project, I'm mounting the camera and a Pi inside a Bolex. Essentially, the sensor will be more or less where the film would run past the lens. There will be a small difference to ensure infinity focus, but the theory is still the same. the 1m marking on the lens will still focus to 1m away. Mounting it this way means I can keep the turret system, as the lenses screw into the body, not onto the sensor. It'll work much better for maintaining the whole look and feel of shooting on 8mm film. Of course, the files won't act or look like film, but using the camera will feel similar, and onlookers will think I'm really artistic. The only difference, in usable terms, is the winder on the side, and the frame rate selector won't do anything. Everything else will work as it once did with film. This is currently not working. I put the pi and switches inside the case to see how much room I have to play with. To give you an idea, I could probably put 2 more Pis in there. That said, this does not yet have the sensor or a battery in the case. Before that though, I need to find time to mount the sensor and have it lined up. The weather here is too nice to be tinkering with that, but hope to have it done in the next few weeks. Once the sensor is in, it's then a case of securely mounting the pi, battery, LEDs and switches. (the switches in the gif are only there for testing. I have smaller, more subtle ones that I'll mount onto the camera. From the outside I want it to look as original as possible.)1 point
