Sony A7S III
Trek of Joy and 3 others reacted to wolf33d for a topic
No. The whole point for me and for millions of FF mirrorless owner in the world is to have a do it all camera. I hate to carry 2 body with me on 60 miles trek at 3000m in the mountain or on summit attempts. Granted, not millions of shooters are mountaineers, but millions of them are travelers, and hate traveling with 2 cameras if one could do it all. So not only I want to carry 1 body, but I want great IBIS. It remains to be seen if the A7SIII IBIS is the same shit as the A7RIV, or excellent like the R5. It remains to be seen if they included Venice color science, and completely changed the body ergonomics and buttons and menus. Since I never shoot more than 1 min clips I do not care about the overheating. BUT, if Sony could have a quad bayer that gives me 12mpx video and 48mpx stills, with much better ergonomics / buttons / menus, better color and better IBIS (basically matching the R5 on those aspects) then I would stay with Sony for 2 reasons: I am already in the ecosystem and I would rather have 12mpx video / 48 mpx stills with the obvious advantages it brings (rolling shutter...) than having just 45mpx. However, I value MUCH more having great IBIS, great body feeling and pleasure of using the camera than having a quad bayer only. It's not like Canon is much behind in spec like always before. I remember an article from @Andrew Reid about how important having a camera with a good body and interface is, that it gives you the will to actually go and shoot and that bodies with poor ergonomics do not inspire you. I kind of agreed at the time. It seems you do not take this into account anymore in your R5/A7S III comments Andrew. I understand the frustration you have with overheating and your pro work that requires long recording, but I am sure you have plenty of gear for that job already and I am sure you will very much enjoy shooting a lot with the R5 for creative short videos.4 points -

Personally for me I hate Sony mirrorless estetics - ergonomics, ancient menus, overall design, using same bodies for almost 10 years, etc. They only improve sensors cos they build them as well. And those sensors are awesome - there is no doubt in that. But I might still go Canon R6 route cos its a ergonomically better camera with awesome IBIS (probably, we need to see some actual tests) and I do like how RF lenses are shaping up. Panasonic is another awesome camera company with their ongoing AF problem, sadly.2 points -
@wolf33d wow never thought I'd see the day were you'd be advocating for Canon! looks like they really are shaking things up when die-hard Sony users are thinking about switching systems! jokes aside, let's wait & see what A7S3 brings to the table. I don't really trust SAR rumours. they've been wrong so many times. if Sony does forgive the quad-bayer sensor and comes out with another 12MP camera, it's certainly going to be divisive for hybrid shooters and dare I say will remain a niche camera. That's half the MP of an A7III so I don't see many hybrid Sony users "downgrading" to a 12MP camera for stills in 2020. For video though, I guess that could mean another low-light champ, good DR and super fast readout times = low RS. I still feel that's not going to be enough to really win the battle, even if they finally include 10-bit.. especially after a 4 year follow-up.2 points

Nikon will announce Z6s/Z7s updates, with dual card slots and 4K 60fps
Mark Romero 2 and one other reacted to Zeng for a topic
Z6 has about the same DR as S1H. A little over 12 stops. Tested myself. Well, depending on what's acceptable to you in the shadows, maybe 1/3 to 1/2 stop more on S1H as it uses NR.2 points -
Should be easy for someone to make a non tape based solution then to plug the hole. Although.... Maybe someone enterprising could incorporate an exhaust fan into that slot for the R5 users 😉1 point

I remember that topic! Didn't see a lot of difference between his samples though, so I dismissed it as a placebo effect. I'll have to add a couple picture profile clips to the folder for comparison. EDIT: Clips 18-20, shot in Picture Profile SLOG, have been uploaded to the drive folder.1 point -

BenEricson reacted to TheRenaissanceMan for a topic
Interesting...I've heard the opposite--that the picture profile version of SLOG is inferior and has "incorrect" color compared to the "proper" SLOG out. I've never noticed a big difference in my (admittedly brief) tests, so I use the latter option for the ability to toggle LUT on and off in the onboard monitor. The clips I posted above use the non-picture profile version of SLOG.1 point -

Hey y'all! Sorry I wasn't able to get footage up sooner. I've been feeling under the weather this week, which has been understandably stressful given COVID. Still waiting for my test results, but I'm improving steadily, so hopefully everything comes back negative. But enough about me--let's get to the fun part. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1nYFylo03zFn2W-P5OtZ08xvZEuQrscGh?usp=sharing These shots are just casual off-the-cuff clips taken around my apartment complex, but hopefully they still prove useful to those interested in how the F3 grades. I tried to get a variety of lighting scenarios, shot sizes, and color temps. The cookbook shot is ISO 1600, and the one under the bed is maxed out at 6400. Everything else is at the F3's base ISO of 800. At @mercer's request, I've included some cats this time. 😁 Keep in mind that I sometimes adjusted/bracketed focus or exposure during shots, so be sure and scrub through to find the most useful frames. Let me know if y'all have any other questions!1 point -
it doesn't disable AF when there is no filter in, i use it a few times with open hole when it is too dark.. but later found dust on the senor ugh. current budget solution is have tape with me to seal it lol.1 point

Yeah it happens a lot that I film slow mo but play some clips real time and then need the audio. Also sometimes I use the audio in real time over the slowmo video (for background sounds like water and so on)1 point

Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K

Wow look at that dynamic range difference, the s1H doesnt break a sweat, the A7S is falling apart, but the R5 is completely shit.1 point -
I had a 24mp A7 alongside my (first) A7s for a couple of years and for stills in good light, the A7 was better but i shoot a LOT in low light and I still think there is no better camera generally available for stills in really low light than the A7s. Yes, there are better ones at ISO 12800 and many about the same at even 25600 but above that, I am yet to be convinced. Even in good light, the A7s is not shabby for photos either. That I can just mount a lens like the Canon 17mm TS-E and walk around shooting hand held (and even shifted/tilted) at night is what i was always after and I use the same combination to shoot bands from next to the stage often in low light pub gigs. You can shoot a billboard with pretty much any camera, even much lower MP ones than an A7s though the more mp, the easier. That the A7s can not track focus to save its life is the biggest draw back for most people for stills I think (not an issue for me) as i use either AFS (where it can focus in almost no light) or MF but I do hope this new camera does have PDAF for better AFC (my A7s CAN sort of focus track a singer who is seated or barely moving but that is about it). I do accept that many would THINK 12mp is too low but i would bet that would hardly really be the case and the lack of AF tracking would be a MUCH bigger issue if they do not improve it. If they do NOT go to PDAF then I hope they can at least get it to the same sort of AF as the RX100 iv (which has quite decent AF but only CDAF). I do not print large (or often at all really) and i do not crop all that much...I would rather use clearzoom if shooting jpegs instead.1 point

A closer look at the Canon EOS R5 lower quality 4K mode to avoid thermal cut-off

It's funny this is one of the strongest selling points for me for Sony. If I can update/upgrade a camera with almost no learning curve, that's priceless. Yes, it takes longer to figure things out at the beginning, but once you're used to it and know how to customize buttons to reach your most-used settings, long-term stability with no major changes is a huge benefit to people who use their cameras every day.1 point

Guys....Canon never intended the R5 to "not" overheat. Overheating was known by Canon a long time ago in development. They "specifically" did "not" try to fix this problem early in R&D. Canon was and is perfectly fine with its recording capabilities. My Canon rep friend told me "Cliff, the R5 will have strong recording restrictions"...over two months ago. And....he knew about this LONG before that. Again, Canon did not want the R5 to "not" have "recording restrictions". By the way...Canon's camcorder division is perfectly happy with the fact that you can't use the R5 for long form event recording. This was part of the R5 plan from day 1 decelopment. You cannot use the R5 in place of a "camcorder". Sorry....1 point

@Antoin e Hey, I meant, I was taken by the beauty of your footage with the F3, motion, tones and the whole canvas. Nicely done. Thank you very much for posting! This thing in 444 indeed seems to be a beast unleashed. Cannot wait to test it myself some time soon hopefully. I found some footage of its internal 8bit 420 SLOG. The seller left some on his car. I was rather impressed. Best implementation of 8bit Log I have seen. A contender to the internal CLOG of the C100 i/ii. One thing to consider is its best WB mode. Think it was 3200K. Google will tell and Alister Chapman. 🙂 Now, if you would still find that beautiful footage of yours for us to grade, please don´t hesitate to drop us some! @TheRenaissanceMan cheers1 point

I joke. Mostly... It just seems that lately, some folks want and expect the moon on a stick, but also, camera companies have been letting us down to a degree. Most of the Fuji issues seem to be because it's IBIS is not as good as a gimbal. Panasonic gave a lot, except it seems autofocus. Sigma gave us fantastic image quality, modularity and size, but left out pretty much everything else. First gen Canon had some weird specs. First gen Nikon less so, but still some issues. Olympus decided to go to one of those special clinics in Switzerland. Sony have...well Sony have not been doing anything for some time and hope we don't notice their horrid little body. Now Canon announce the 'grail cameras' (cue heavenly light and organ music) but it turns out they hoped no one would notice they become hot, switch off and have a little lie down for a while. It all depends on your useage of course. I don't think the limitations of the R5 or R6 would affect me at all and so both will undoubtedly be great hybrids. Same goes for the rest above except the Sigma which would be far too frustrating for my needs as much as I want to love it, but I could probably swing the Z6 (it's successor sounds luke warm to some but sounds near perfect to me) and I know I could make the XT4 work. But I can see why some feel frustrated. I'm a bit frustrated myself with all of them because with them all there's a degree of, "why the fuck did you not just...??!!"1 point

currensheldon reacted to Django for a topic
R6 will overheat in 4K60p after 30-40mn & in 4K30p after 40-50mn (depending on FF/S35 modes). Shouldn't be any overheating issues in 4K24p/25p. Let's just remember we're talking FF no crop oversampled 4K60p with DPAF in 10-bit 4:2:2 internal. In comparison, the only hybrid camera on the market that can get close to that is the almost twice more expensive S1H which can only do 4K60p with a S35 crop in 10-bit 4:2:0 longGOP and poor contrast AF... and that camera has active cooling on board!1 point -

TheRenaissanceMan reacted to Matt James Smith ? for a topic
I think perhaps we’re missing the point. Just like their previous “hybrids” it’s a stills camera first and foremost. The difference now is that instead of video being an afterthought thrown on in case photographers *must* shoot a few clips, it is now “video for photographers.” What I mean by that is the 8K video mode is basically a 30fps burst mode to pull stills from. It’s the first stills camera in what is probably going to be the near future of photography - no distinction between stills and video. 8K RAW is the first video mode that can really claim the image quality of a frame is equal to high-end photography (especially in combination with Canon’s AF making every frame perfect). I’m surprised they’re not offering an open gate mode to be honest.1 point -

Depends on whether you are an eternal pessimist or not, I suppose 😛 My personal outlook will remain unchanged. I shot a short film in 6 second chunks at -16 Q Scale to get a higher bitrate on the T2i when Magic Lantern first came out. And I loved it. Squeezing the best IQ out of a camera is right up my alley...and I thought yours as well but you seemed to have changed your tune since I was last here.1 point -
