  3. The last one where we had to find the best camera under $200 was a hoot Best technical image was the 4K GX85 but the videos also had various levels of ingenuity and creativity. I am open for ideas for that the next challenge could be 🙂 Best low light camera for under $500? Most cinematic look for $300? (Regardless of resolution) Music video shot with one prime challenge? Let's settle on a theme and see if we can get the next one going.

  4. Apologies if this comes across a bit harsh Mr Super 8 but your ridiculous obsession with the gh5 and blaiming of BM cameras on other threads due to your own lack of knowledge, do you no favours I'm afraid. I don't think I've acome across anyone who consistently talks as much nonsense as you. Other than maybe your lovely President. Still can't tell if its intentional trolling or you actually believe what you are saying. Kind of hope it's the former for your own sake

  5. IMHO the GH6 could be a seriously formidable camera with just a few good tweaks to the sensor and PDAF. If it only does 4k at upto 120fps (and perhaps 1080p at 240fps), has atleast 1 stop better dynamic range for video, has 14-bit RAW photo and about 1.5-2 stops of better low light, it should be more than sufficient for the next generation of filmmakers and usable for another 3-4 years. Having RAW via HDMI or having some flavour of internal compressed RAW (BRAW) would be great. 8k is just overkill, causing the camera to turn into a barbeque machine and eating unnecessarily into memory. Plus good 4k can easily be upressed to 8k, if one absolutely needs it (which is like not right now). The colour science and highlight handling need tweaking and the VLog L needs to go. Luckilg it doesn't suffer from overheating, and so many othe issues. Panasonic should keep the price as low or lower than the GH5. They could do this by re-using the GH5's basic body structure (or using the G9's body structure) and re-use some of the hardware. If they get PDAF, and these features, and the GH6 is priced at $1500-1750, it could easily eat into everyone else's market. Both size and price of the M43 has become difficult to justify after the launch of the A7III and the XT3, and the ever increasing size of M43 bodies (1DX and G9) and lenses (all the Olympus f1.2 pro primes). Suddenly $2000 seems like a good price for many cameras. Blackmagic makes great cameras, but they lack reliability, weather-sealing, decent battery life, IBIS, decent autofocus. Also the 5 inch screen seems like a wasted effort if it cannot be seen during the day. Panasonic just needs to consolidate its video prowess.

    Sony A7S III

Sony's new AF system seems to be a given, if the plastic fantastic a6100 got it, I'm sure the new a7s will too. I don't think there's anything wrong with the a7s for photos, I've traveled with one extensively (though I've always had a r2/3 as well). But I find 12mp limiting because once you do even small things like straighten horizons and adjust crop for framing or a little perspective correction - at least for me - there's just not a lot of pixels to spare. My output isn't strictly for social/web, I shoot stuff that does get printed large on occasion. I shot part of a campaign that covered walls and a train in Toronto's metro as well as busses in London - the smallest file I had was about 4200px wide, they asked if I had a larger version. The a7s is a fine stills camera, but with no real difference compared to downsampling higher mp Sony cameras, its easier for my workflow to shoot with higher mp bodies. Plus when shooting landscapes - which is most of my stuff these days -the additional details just adds more punch to the files, I prefer the look. I've started printing my own stuff in larger numbers through Printique too, I just marvel at the level of detail from the a7r bodies. If I need any more DR - which is rare - I just bracket and combine in post. YMMV. Cheers Chris

  12. Will be interesting to see if he sticks with using the R5 for vlogging. Sounds like the overheating issue will pop up every time he vlogs with it. The DR in video hasn’t caught up with Sony either. Still a huge void left for someone like Panasonic to take advantage of with either a GH or S camera. They just need good AF, and that’s all they need really. Its pretty clear messaging from Canon. They view these as kinda hybrid cameras but mostly photo cameras. If you want Canon for video is currently C200/300/500. Honestly the R is still the better YouTuber vlog camera. R6 falls short with all the gotchas. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a video from any of the Canon YouTube personalities that they are sticking with the R.

  13. The people defending Canon seem to have a problem with people expecting the bare minimum from a camera. No one expected unlimited 8K recording (I'm not sure why this was brought up in a post about the R6 but OK.) Everyone expected some limitations on such a feature, but they didn't think it'd be "hey, you can record for 20 minutes in *70 degree* weather, but then you'll need to let it cool down for 20 minutes to be able to record for another 5 minutes" or whatever the numbers are. Why didn't any of us expect that? Because it's not practical! And if a company knows there's that big of an issue, one should expect they'd do more to remedy it BEFORE releasing it to consumers. If you can't match the functionality of a 3 and a half year old GH5 then what are you doing? And full frame 4K without a crop isn't an excuse. Asking for a camera that doesn't overheat isn't unreasonable.

    Sony A7S III

Well my first ever camera was a 450D, and then a 5DII and 5DIII. I did not like what direction Canon took from the 5DIII and I liked what other brands brought on the table the past few years. I have also owned the EM1, the GH3,4,5, multiple Fujis and Sonys. I think Sony deserves props for how they launched the FF mirrorless movement to what it is today. Canon is getting back in the race with a great set of cameras and deserve props for that. Cameras are just 2 things for me: a tool so I like to have the best tool for the task so I don't mind changing system if I feel a brand is proposing a tool better suiting my use. Secondly, I love tech and appreciate testing and trying new things thus why I explore many different camera options over the years. True, I speak out loud and sometimes my point of views are extreme... Anyway I do agree if 12mp only and not quad bayer, they are in trouble. Not nearly enough to counter R5. Sure for specialize work (video only, interview filming,...) it might be a better buy than the R5. But I believe for a majority of people the R5 will be a much better overall hybrid. Let's not forget all the historic Canon advantages I and Sony users had to close our eyes on for years (ergonomics, colors...) rightfully so because other specs were much better. Will we close our eyes on those now that Canon matches/exceed the good stuff (frame rates, no crop FF, 10 bit, flippy screen...)? Absolutely not. I hope for Sony the 12mp rumor is a quad bayer 12/48mpx, that they integrated Venice color science, that they upgraded the touch screen and menus and they upgraded the IBIS. If not, I wish them good luck for the next 2 years. Even for the low end battle, who will buy a A7IV for $2000 when they can get a R6 for $2500 should they both do 4K60p 10 bit, 20-24mpx with the Canon having better IBIS / colors body / ergonomics and being a Canon? The 3 dudes who need 5 hours recording time yet don't use the right Cinema camera tool for the job certainly will. For the rest of us though....

  16. It's not even a campaign Simply about reporting the facts None of the major coverage initially mentioned any overheating issues. People were pre-ordering the camera under a false pretence. So I had to put the facts on the blog rather than have that info stay hidden in the CVP video. You seem to be suggesting that I should shut up? It's $3900 + tax. I expect it to do what a $3900 Panasonic S1H does - active cooling, 4K 10bit 422 unlimited record times. 6K or 8K is just a bonus. The RAW file sizes are unmanageable for longer record times so the overheating in that mode is only the secondary problem! Of course, you can produce lovely work with the EOS R5. It's will just be a shame about the moment on that shoot where great stuff is being captured up to the point where NOTHING is being captured because the camera got too warm.

  17. I don't even know what blog you are rereferring to or if you are even responding to the right thread. But no one is expecting a $2500 or $3500 camera to perform like one costing 20x as much. On the other hand, if a manufacturer puts features into a camera that make you decide to buy that camera then you find out you can't actually use those features because it will overheat....that is a problem. Would you buy a car that has amazing features but randomly shuts down half way to your destination depending on many factors that are beyond your control? Canon is known for stability, not innovation and I think this time around they chose to go all in on innovation which is great for them but I would take stability over innovation any day. My clients aren't going to care why we are all standing around when my equipment doesn't work, they are just going to hire someone else next time.

  20. Having pre-ordered both the R5 and R6 as a tiny deposit, while i decided to get them or not, I have to say as someone who make a living with video, so far I'm concerned. This post includes some negativity, so I just want to make it clear that having pre-ordered them for very specific reasons I want these cameras to work well. What it looks like. We can only speculate, but it looks like these cameras will be either transformational or a disaster depending on their use. I think both @Neumann Films and @Andrew Reid have good perspectives - this is how I see it. The R5 (and the R6) look like a marvel on paper - finally the hybrid that supposedly does everything and potentially makes creating professional video very, very liberating. Very well done Canon for waking up. But is it a kick in the balls? A couple of years back, I was using the A7SII and A6500 in my camera bag. They overheated twice (amongst many many shoots), and it was annoying as it stopped the shoot and made us go behind schedule. With 4k60p and 4k120 being a staple feature on many brand and music video shoots, the question is how many bursts can it handle on a fast paced shoot? I do think it will be mostly fine, as shots come in short bursts and there's gaps between setting up a new shot, the potential issue is still there. Although my EVA1 doesn't have DPAF, IBIS or a full frame - it doesn't even flinch on a shoot and I have no worries. Same with the GH5. The potential of overheating in the back of my mine is certainly not a worry i want to have. Especially with client money on the table. I think the issue is that when people are spending a few grand on a camera, with very expensive lenses and accessories, they expect it to work for most scenarios and not have to worry about the camera having a tantrum. It's one less camera to buy and carry if you wish to do longer form content like interviews. I see people saying "buy a C300". For many, it's just not realistic. For most things that are not very short bursts, the R6 looks like a complete write off. On paper, there's no chance that camera could keep up with multiple, consistent takes. Also for those expecting to shoot continuous 8k RAW, go and see your Doctor. 😉 Questions? As some of you may know, having an external monitor at least on the hot shoe during a professional shoot is pretty much essential. Also, recording to an edit friendly codec like ProRes is sometimes a great necessity. External recording would be a fine "workaround", if you could still get the benefits of the EOS R bodies (as long as you have a HDMI lock) This will be the pressing questions for most professional shooters intending to use this system. How long can it go in continuous bursts shooting 4k60? Someone with a body needs to test this. Usage The R5 will be fine for a lot of things, but I think it will be very popular on big movies as a crash cam with that 8K RAW in such a small body. It's very much a speciality mode that I'm sure will be used on many movie sets. The R6, I'm not so sure. There's other cameras out there (Zcam E2-M4 - £1300 camera with 4k160fps 10 bit), although nothing will match the R5 if overheating can be managed. Let's hope the climax to this story is a good one. Tets, tests, tests.

  21. I believe your just leading this ridiculous campaign to promote your blog . Which is perfectly fine . But, do you really expect a camera that cost 3500.00 to do what a 79,0000.00 dollar Red Monstro does? Every sane person knew it would be limited. And the Red doesn’t have the crazy good AF. I think a lot of people are going to take advantage of the amazing capabilities of this camera, and produce some lovely work. And, from what I have seen it looks pretty fantastic. We have come a long way since the 5D.

  23. Its still coming along. Or should I say they are coming along as there will now likely be two different options. I'll endeavour to show something of each of them in the next two weeks and the plan is currently to open pre-orders for them at the end of August for at least one of them. Component supply for prototyping has been a major issue as the design has been changing. Dual and offset is certainly doable but outside of the initial scope.

  24. I will start this off by saying I am a huge Canon fan, I recommend Canon gear to pretty much anyone starting out in photography and waited years for Canon to get their act together so that I could replace my GH5 with a Canon mirrorless for video gimbal work. Every spec that was leaked about the R6 seemed to indicate that it was going to be the no brainer replacement for my GH5 gimbal camera work....until all of the specs were revealed. I had only 3 real requirements for the R6 since I already knew it would have excellent AF, color science, and video codec options: Dual card slot video recording - This was my number one requirement for the R6. I will never understand why a camera would have dual card slots then only record video to one of them. My C200 records to both, my GH5 records to both, why doesn't my 5DIV do the same, and now the R6 doesn't either in 2020? I've heard all of the people saying they've never had a failure, Hollywood cameras only record to a single card etc, etc. Well I have had a card reader completely corrupt an SD card after a full day of shooting and the second card saved the day; I will never pick camera that has no backup capability for video over one that does. I also don't understand why more people are not clearly highlighting this fact or the fact that nearly every competitor does have this feature. Unlimited recording time - Once again, it is 2020, why on earth did Canon keep the 30min recording limit due to some obscure tax law that only affects certain European countries? My GH5 has unlimited recording time, I use it all the time as a B cam for the C200 for interviews, conferences, long events, etc. XLR audio module - this remains to be seen, but so far Canon has not mentioned any plans to release an XLR module for the R5 or R6. This is one of my favorite GH5 features, all of my audio gear uses XLR connectors and for run and gun situations I'll use the GH5 for the whole project including high quality audio capture. The GH5 is far from perfect; highlight rolloff is atrocious in WDR scenarios, the color science is a pain to grade in post, and of course my number one problem is the fact I need to use MF at all times when shooting with it which means I'm throwing away an unacceptable amount of footage and working overtime to keep the talent in focus during complex gimbal movements. I had fully planned on pre-ordering the R6 when it was available but every single thing that is important to me is missing from this camera and that was before the overheating problems starting making the rounds. I live in FL where my gear regularly sits in 120+ degree heat inside of cars before the start of the project; I cannot afford to have a camera that overheats on set. My GH5 has worked flawlessly shooting at 4K60FPS in 98 degree heat, after sitting in a 120 degree car and never overheated. That's the type of reliability I have come to expect from all of my gear. Now that the full specs for the R6 are available, the only thing it did was make me realize just how good the GH5 is and further appreciate its features despite it's downsides. I still have some hope that an R6 firmware update will remove the recording limit, add dual slot video recording, and Canon releases an XLR module. If they did that I'd be all in with Canon.

  25. I love the idea of the R6 but it does not record video to both card slots; there is no way I'm going to shoot a wedding with a single card or a major event with a keynote speaker with a single card, or pretty much any paying gig and have no backup. Profit margins in this business are razor thin and all it takes is one bridezilla posting all over the Internet that you lost her priceless wedding footage to tank your company. Canon is so frustratingly close to perfection, one firmware update away from getting it right. I think 20MP is perfect, the 1DXIII has 20MP and it is in the hands of many pro shooters, in fact I think 20MP makes the R6 even more attractive since it will be a lowlight beast not to mention you can take stills using a $2500 body that is used in their $6500 flagship. Most images these days end up on Instagram at 960x1200...that's only 1.1MP.

  27. The R5 and R6 deliver the specs they claim on paper. Let's not forget IMAGE QUALITY trumps SPECS that you never use. We need to wait and see how the R5 and R6 stack up against the latest cameras in it's class. You could be right. The Gh5 image quality might be as good as we can get. I've seen better with the S1, Z6, P4K, P6K and Sigma. Let see if the R5 and R6 are even usable before we champion that they are not.

    Sony A7S III

Fair enough. Thanks. You CAN print at that size from even a 8mp camera though with decent upsizing software though yes, if you do print that large, more MP to start helps. Not sure that would apply to many people though. My photos are mainly just for me now and family and friends but have had normal photos (IE not something unique) from the A7s taken at isos like 102400 in newspapers, something I would never have imagined even sending them with any other camera I have used even if they COULD have taken it. Pre Covid, I have had a lot of bands using my photos and in the last few years, mainly just for the likes of Facebook or website use and for that a 4mp camera would possibly be overkill. Photos I had on a major label CD years ago where tiny (taken with a 6mp DLR...would have LOVED an A7s back then). Even things like most photo contests when asking for entries will usually have a size limit (often something like 2500 pixels on the longest side) so even A7s files have to be downsized to enter and for judging. Ye, we all have our requirements.

  32. The likely reason is that Canon design and manufactures its own chips/electronics, and that its chip technology is old and not on the level of contemporary chip manufacturing of 14nm or less. Bigger structures/more nanometers mean: less power efficiency, more heat production. (That's why smartphones, using the latest and smallest chip technology, are so incredibly powerful at low electricity consumption and low heat dissipation.) Panasonic, as much bigger electronics manufacturer, has access to more modern chip technology. They likely also manufacture the electronics of the Sigma fp (since they also manufacture the electronics of Leica cameras, and since the fp uses a Panasonic battery). This is also the reason why Canon's self-manufactured sensor chip are behind in performance to Sony's.

  33. I'm not sure what people expected from a 4k $ camera that the main target are photographers. I bet that 90% of the sales goes to people that mostly do photo and just a bit of video. So let see how many cameras can do 4k 120 fps with AF: -C300 III (11k $) -R5 (4k $) How many cameras can do 4k FF with or without AF: - R5 How many 8k RAW: -RED - R5 8k with AF - R5 At the moment nothing else on the market at any price not even for 100k $, I see the silly comparison with phones etc... but this is the first FF 4k 120fps ever and is kind of affordable. So yes it has 15min limit at 4k 120fps but I take that instead of the alternatives that does not exist. Maybe A7S III but if it has 12mpix is a video only device imo. People should get real, of course with the limitation is not a camera for everybody and is not even a camera target only at filmmaker (Cxx are) so it does not fit you need just move on but saying that is crippled etc.... is just silly. No photographer wants a camera with fan and as the main target are photographers they did not put a fan on it as they have dedicated C line with fan for the long takes scenarios. I do mostly sport and action and have the 1Dx III, I normally need two cameras (for remote) and adding a R5 is almost a no brainer as is a great remote camera at 12 or 20fps, small and with a bonus 45mpix where I can crop a lot if needed (example ice hockey net cam) and give me more lightweight on gimbal and 4k 120fps with AF that for sport/action is really cool. If you would do long interview or very long take I would buy something else. I will wait the more real world reviews and also to be able to play with the files 8k RAW and non and 4k oversampled and binned to real see with my eyes how is the quality and then probably buy one. My biggest wish would be that they were opengate as it would be even better for pulling pictures something that I do a lot out of the 5.5k raw of the 1Dx III, 8k opengate would be really good for me.

    Sony A7S III

Agree with @noone The A7Sx should be what it is - a high quality low light video focused camera. 12mp is fine. What’s the point of making the A7Sx “like” the A7iii - get the A7iii if that’s the better or preferred option. Isn’t this the whole point of the A7 series? Different cameras for different people/uses. If it produces supreme 4k footage at high iso (internal/external - I don’t mind) then it’ll fill this chap’s niche rather well. Personally, I’d like Sony to release a version of the A7Sx to update the UMC-S3CA.

  38. I feel its not that uncommon for a Hybrid to be used as a gimbal camera. Just was on a show with a FX9 as A cam and A73 as B camera and Gimbal camera. Depends on how high end the show is I guess. Probably not really a thing in most narrative stuff(the pro stuff at least). All this stuff is mostly catering to the lower end of things I feel like.

  39. Record limits suck, but its not the end of the world to just press record again. We've all been dealing with 15-20 minute record limits on many cameras. Overheating though is an issue because you can't just press record again if the camera is powered off from overheating and needs 15 minutes to cool down. Sounds like their are resolution options that don't overheat so its really not bad. Who shoots at over 4k 30p for most stuff anyways? Lots of people do so they'll just have to get something else. I am really thinking about getting an R6 plus Ninja V. Having something with reliable auto focus and 10 bit is huge for under 3k. If Fuji can up their Auto Focus game I'll gladly throw my money their way. That goes for Panasonic or Blackmagic!
    1 point
  40. The people who modded the A6300 to work with a fan had to actually open up the camera for the fan to be effective. I'd imagine it would be the same with this. I guess its doable under decent conditions (dust or rain would kill it). External recorders work to bypass overheating on Sony cameras though so I am sure its the same with this. The Ninja V is only $500, not too bad. Then you get Prores which is superior for editing anyways. Its just unfortunate the R6 can't handle the same as its quite a bit cheaper and makes more sense for most people's needs.

  42. Yeah, you can grade F3 footage easily with just the Lift, Gamma, Gain in any grading tool and get nice results. No LUT needed. It is important to mention that there are two S-LOG settings on the F3. For best results, you want to set your camera to video out and enable S-LOG in the picture profile setting. If you do a standard, S-LOG out, the color is altered and harder to deal with in post. Specifically in the green channel.

  43. @BTM_Pix How is this coming along? I know the whole world has kinda come to a halt, but I’m curious. I would throw in a slightly unorthodox feature request for addition at some point: control of two focus motors simultaneously. This would make it useable for 3D rigs, and for synchro-focus of an anamorphic adapter and taking lens (although the latter would require disparate lens profiles for each lens to be running simultaneously, rather than a simple duplicate motor control output.) I’m sure there are other potential uses (2 camera shoots, etc,) but it’s something I wish Tilta did NOW with their kits having multiple motors.

  45. ..or just shoot normal 4K for your long recordings and sprinkle 8K/4K60p/4K120p when available/necessary. those modes will eat up storage space anyways so not great for long recordings. that is how I shot with 5D3 + ML RAW or even on EOS R (FHD+ FHD HQ / 4K). according to a R5 tester on YT, the camera never fully shuts down during overheat and still allows normal 4K shooting:

    Sony A7S III

No. The whole point for me and for millions of FF mirrorless owner in the world is to have a do it all camera. I hate to carry 2 body with me on 60 miles trek at 3000m in the mountain or on summit attempts. Granted, not millions of shooters are mountaineers, but millions of them are travelers, and hate traveling with 2 cameras if one could do it all. So not only I want to carry 1 body, but I want great IBIS. It remains to be seen if the A7SIII IBIS is the same shit as the A7RIV, or excellent like the R5. It remains to be seen if they included Venice color science, and completely changed the body ergonomics and buttons and menus. Since I never shoot more than 1 min clips I do not care about the overheating. BUT, if Sony could have a quad bayer that gives me 12mpx video and 48mpx stills, with much better ergonomics / buttons / menus, better color and better IBIS (basically matching the R5 on those aspects) then I would stay with Sony for 2 reasons: I am already in the ecosystem and I would rather have 12mpx video / 48 mpx stills with the obvious advantages it brings (rolling shutter...) than having just 45mpx. However, I value MUCH more having great IBIS, great body feeling and pleasure of using the camera than having a quad bayer only. It's not like Canon is much behind in spec like always before. I remember an article from @Andrew Reid about how important having a camera with a good body and interface is, that it gives you the will to actually go and shoot and that bodies with poor ergonomics do not inspire you. I kind of agreed at the time. It seems you do not take this into account anymore in your R5/A7S III comments Andrew. I understand the frustration you have with overheating and your pro work that requires long recording, but I am sure you have plenty of gear for that job already and I am sure you will very much enjoy shooting a lot with the R5 for creative short videos.

  47. When it dies in the middle of a shot will the first thought be "I am glad Canon pushed the camera industry forward" or will it be "why did I spend £4000 on this thing which Peter McKinnon said was THE GRAIL CAMERA"?

  48. Honestly if Panasonic created a camera with the following I would be completely sold, all I need for quite some time to come: 4k60p 10 bit S1H dynamic range and color Native duel ISO Super 35 or full frame sensor Built in NDs h.265 and prores codecs IBIS Duel pixal autofocus I could honestly care less about 6k or 8k, raw and the like unless it was a good compressed raw like r3d. A rich cinematic image, built in NDs and a reliable body would be top of my list. I currently shoot with GH5s and speedboosters and they are the closest things I have ever gotten to that list, really just add NDs, good auto focus, nail down the color science and low light a bit more like the GH5s but with IBIS and they would have the "perfect" camera in my book.

  50. Apparently my bug about the C100 slipped through the cracks at Lesspain / Kyno. They asked me to try it again in the new 1.4 version and I can report that it is fixed. It's a very nicely thought-out piece of software which allows you to trim, copy, re-encode video/audio in whatever manner you want . They have a trial. Highly recommended that you try it out, if you do any footage "pre-processing". https://lesspain.software/kyno/
