  1. The wide-angle selfie 30p IBIS autofocus shot is the new "video". I'd like to get back to cinema. So today I decided to do an experiment. Found a cheap Nikon D850 for 1500 euros. No IBIS. No AF. Going to use a tripod. Shocking!! Every time I have AF and IBIS I'm tempted to use it, and it really is inferior to a tripod and manual focus in terms of "cinematic". So much unmotivated camera movement out there and robotic focus. Nothing against it as a shot-getter, or for convenience sake but I am tiring of watching it. Floaty, artificial and "YouTubey".

Long time member, infrequent communicator here. I got into it a bit with Mr. Reid the other day for the first time. After discussing it with him privately, I found that he and I were much more similar in our views than I first thought. He and I both just had bad days...on the same day. So that got me thinking...I spend time here, it has been a resource for me in the past (whether educational or casual reading/browsing). I think it's easy to take a site like this for granted. We tend to just assume there's a team or that it is all automated. It's not, it's one guy and it takes time from his day and other things. So, I wanted to do an AMA and get to know him a bit more. I will start it off. Please post questions in bold + italic and tag "@Andrew Reid". @Andrew Reid What art form interests you the most outside of film? Also...what is your favorite CURRENT local restaurant (no chains)? PS...I know Andrew is too humble to make this sticky or pin it. But I think it should be. If it is sticky or pinned it's because I'm requesting it. I think it would be good for the health of the site for people to have a better sense of who is behind it. It would add a personality that would make things more civil and you would probably notice that you don't get stressed as much. 🙂

12mp is easily enough for printing ‘large’. What 12mp tends to lack is much post-cropping latitude. As a working *cough* wedding photographer, 12mp wouldn’t bother me in the slightest if it meant ‘better’ low light capability/quality and the rest of the spec was not compromised.

  4. I’ve always felt like you should make any money you want to make OFF site. Keep your channel as clean as possible from advertisers or sponsors. It just clouds everything. It’s not just YouTube though. I was asked to help do some stuff on a travel/nature series and had a bunch of stuff written up for how to make it exciting and engaging only to find that 50% of each episode was devoted to sponsors and promoting their businesses. So, instead of “trying to make an engaging show” the job became “creative ways to feature sponsors”. It’s pretty limiting if that is your starting point. The truth is that YouTube is going all hive mind (like Reddit or any other social media conglomerate) and any uniqueness becomes monetized, packaged and then replicated to the point of parody. How many people have a “What’s up guys!” intro that is copy and pasted from everyone else? How about the same lighting in their studio background? Same thumbnails, same titles, same content. It’s become junk food ready for mass consumption. Icky.

@Neumann Films a Reddit style AMA is a great idea for the forum. I'll do my best to answer what you guys asked above. We should do this with you Neumann some time too, and some camera companies. I have some interviews coming up on the blog. Sigma's CEO Kazuto Yamaki and the Sigma Fp product manager got a book-length of questions from me and are very kindly working on some answers! Fujifilm also in Japan. I think the camera companies are always shrouded in mystery so the more they talk to their users, the better. We can send our suggestions their way! @Neumann Films What art form interests you the most outside of film? Also...what is your favorite CURRENT local restaurant (no chains)? Music. I like how you can choose to be a solo artist or be in a group. Filmmakers don't quite have the same luxury if we want to make really good stuff 🙂 We need actors, writers, at the very least an interesting model or subject to shoot. Musicians just pick up an instrument, and write music. Also writing, I think that's fascinating as well. Whether it be fiction or writing down ideas, I think filmmakers who can do this well have a real advantage over the pack. Favourite restaurant in Berlin is the Japanese BBQ "Ushido" and back home in the UK there's a great one in Manchester with a cocktail bar, called "Room". @Itu did you attend any film school? Which one? Not really but went to university and made artistic video pieces, music videos and some short films (in the Mini DV era)! @Video Hummus having run EOSHD solo for so many years where you have routinely written about your frustrations over and over again about the same persistence and repeated short comings of every brands cameras, would you consider yourself a masochist? If not, what kind of mental health problem would you say you have? Addicted to buying new cameras. It is interesting to follow the flow of technology and innovation but with the camera industry being so dominated by the Japanese, I feel it could benefit from more multi-cultural ideas and designers. It's becoming a bit like the Japanese car industry where all the different models are homogeneous. Well done to Sigma for trying something different with the Fp! @Mr. Freeze 1. What moment/film was your motivation to pick up a Camera to create films? Koyaanisqatsi. Never seen reality in such poetic form, and the synthesis with the Philip Glass score, just amazing. But what's inspiring is it's basically one cinematographer and a camera, long, long takes. Each one hypnotic. No actors, no big crew, no writers, just the music and images. Hitchcock, now there is an inspiration too. 2. Being able to travel back in time, let´s say 1920-2000, what decade/year would you like to visit and film in? I think late 70's, early 80's. The auteur era in the US. And 60's France. I've heard many of the younger pros say Jurassic Park is the "classic" that inspired them to be a filmmaker. It's great fun, but popcorn fluff... How times, and people are changing.

  6. The Sigma FP is a 8-bit only internal recording camera, has no 4K60p, no PDAF and Sigma just confirmed it can’t even record LOG due to « design limitations ». It’s a very powerful camera in relation to its minuscule size and surely an ingenious passive cooling design, but thermal issues remain and are surely the cause of such limitations. The S1H, despite an active cooling system and body almost twice the size/weight can only do 4K60p with a S35 crop. No PDAF either on that camera. Canon chose to unlock superior specs at the risk of overheating, which I understand is a polarizing decision, however I’m not sure there is a strong case to be made against its thermal balance giving the power it unleashed compared to those two cameras with a passive cooling system. Sony however, if the spec rumors are true may be on such a breakthrough..

Okay, 15 stops dynamic range minus 1 to 1.5 stops for the bullshit factor. So roughly 13.5 to 14 real stops. 16 Bit raw photos or is that RAW video via HDMI? 600Mbps sounds logical considering the 720Mbps max for V90 UHS-II cards. So basically a FX-9 in a A7 body? Wheres the catch?

  12. Problem with that is that there is a cool down period and a reduction in the next recording. So 12 mins wouldn't necessary be consistent. People are treating this as a clip limit, its not. Its more random. The figures quoted assume a certain temperature and with the camera switched on from cold. If the temperature is higher, if you've been storing it in a warm place, or using it before; these could all reduce the figures down. Some people saying you can record 20 mins of 8K RAW just because this is the figure Canon gave as an example, isn't really accurate. It could be much longer on a cold day and a lot shorter on a hot day.

A photo quality print at 300dpi at 12mp would be about 9x14 or 11x14 (depends on what site you go to) and at 250dpi and 200dpi and maybe even 150dpi much larger and still be ok I have an (old) book by a well known photographer saying 10-12mp is good for 24x36 inches but the various sites with how large can you print charts typically say you can print a good quality print from 12mp at around 20x30. I would not print that large (24x36 or 20x30) without upsizing from it but certainly have more than 4x6 and had larger than that in newspapers (at high isos too). Again, I get that there is a perception 12mp is not enough for photos and that there ARE some users and uses that would find it not so good a fit but for the vast majority of photos taken is more than enough.

  14. Well done for getting the opportunity to talk with Panasonic! This is a great example of one of the many reasons your forum is of great value to the community. Commitment to and future direction of MFT, specially the GH line (more video centric, eND, zoom in to check focus etc). Taking ergonomic elements of the C100 and XC10 (rotating grip with joystick, ND placement, etc) could well make a compelling argument to stick with MFT. Also whether they are considering longer f1.7 MFT zooms. Compatibility of V-Log, colours etc accross all Panasonic lines (GH, S, Varicam and DVX).

  22. I've been impressed with the R's video AF, the only RF lens I've used on a shoot is the 35, other lenses I've used are the EF 16-35/2.8 III, Sigma 35/1.4, Sigma 24-105, EF 100-400 L II and I just scored a deal on a used RF 24-70 but haven't shot anything with it yet. The last FW update really boosted the R's AF, after watching a few videos I decided to try one and see how I liked it to get back to Canon colors. I sold my a73 shortly after getting it and made the R my main video body. I still shoot Sony for stills, but the 45mp R5 will likely change that unless the a7s3 is something special. Anyway, stuff closer than arms length is a little fuzzy so I need reading glasses - meaning I have a hard time judging critical focus on the LCD or EVF - reliable video AF has been a life saver for me. Vloggers love it, need I say more LOL! The a73's tracking is probably a little better, eye af seems to be a notch above the R but the R5 looks to be on par with Sony's newest bodies. With the a73 your subject can be further away before it switches to face tracking and it seems to lock onto faces a bit quicker, but the interface just isn't as good and IMO the touch is laggy. Canon's touchscreen is just more responsive (makes focusing and navigating menus so much easier) and I like the flippy screen over Sony's tilt screen. Both can slow the AF speed for more natural focus pulls, that's a push IMO. I use the touchscreen on the R for pretty much everything and I've had no issues with the AF box leaving my subject. Its just so easy to tap the screen and go. I've done a couple hours worth of interviews with people sitting and standing using all the lenses I listed above - they always move, its natural - focus stays glued to them. Servo AF does the job nicely. I shot wakeboarding with the 100-400 and it had no problem tracking them coming at the camera, when I was panning, and when they were moving away from the camera. Gimbal shots are a breeze, I just tap the LCD and focus on framing and not tripping over stuff. The only hiccups were quick zooms, it takes a second to refocus but it stays locked onto the subject. The a73 and a7r3 always did the same thing. After watching a few R5 videos, Canon has made significant improvements to the DPAF capabilities over the R, it definitely looks next level with the amount of processing power the camera has. I'm looking forward to testing it out. Chris

  23. Meh.. fairly standard practice from them. Pre-pandemic this type of launch would have warranted a big hoopla press event in a staged environment with media card doors sealed but instead they went with sending preproduction cameras with NDAs on footage etc. We’ll have to wait for production units to get more than the “hands-on” review..

I moved on from the vignettes and mood pieces in Europe / UK because of the way the streets now look and the way people aren't so eccentric. I find there's less interest in the everyday. And sometimes people are downright hostile towards camera users due to personal privacy obsessions. I would like to do some again, but maybe in Japan or India.

  25. Big gap in score... Both gold medals. Identical score... Canon gets gold, and the clearly superior camera gets silver. How can anybody say the EOS M6 is more recommendable than the X-Pro3? Or that an M100 deserves a gold? Just Bizarre.

  34. Canon released a full statement about the overheating issues. Basically says that the R6 overheats in all recording modes around 20/30 minutes. And R5 not overheats only in 4K30 full sensor (not oversampling). Every other mode overheats at 20 minutes. This will be a deal breaker for so many people. I didn't want to believe it at first but wow. Where I live I have +25 degrees Celsius from August to May approximately, with 7 months with 32+c. Damn!

  35. Just to correct your article, the S1h only has 6k 4:2:0 not 4:2:2 10 bit. I wish lol. As a user of the S1h, I can say that I am glad they put a fan on that thing even if it means the body is a bit larger. I like that it’s heavier as it makes the camera more stable while holding. Mix that with awesome IBIS and it’s a winner. I bought the S1h because it has really good 4k. I don’t understand everyone who wants 8k. Storage and workflow is going to be a complete nightmare for most. Not to mention the cost of cfast cards. If I were to get either of these I think the R6 is the one to look at. Either way its a great push for these companies and I’m all for competition for better cameras.

Depends on your shooting style also. I mostly shoot stills with a 35mm 1.4 on FF. I like the convenience of switching to an APS-C crop for more telephoto 50mm reach. With a 12MP sensor that would mean 8MP cropped images which is really pushing it for pro use. In comparison R5’s 45MP translates to 30MP APS-C shots. Thats not to say the 12MP A7S series don’t have their purpose, for dim situations like concerts / nocturnal events, where a flash isn’t desired, they rule. But that remains niche purposes imo.

  37. I have to say that without wishing to bash them in any way, but yes, their standard of photography is mediocre at best. When a new camera is reviewed and then a gallery posted, I’ve looked at the gallery and reminded myself (again), not to look at their galleries.

  38. The only thing that I have found that works is: narrative stuff with BTS to show how it was done. The problem is that...it's not a financially stable or viable system. I can afford to do them maybe once a year. Which is totally fine, it just doesn't lead to growth. So, you couldn't really do that as a starting point and expect a channel to grow. Well, maybe you could, I just think it would be tough. The nice thing about YouTube is that there are probably 1,000 different ways to do it and still be unique and different. Narrative + BTS isn't the only way, it's just the only thing that's worked on my channel thus far. That and 8K videos 😂

  39. Yeah agreed this style needs to evolve. The problem with these guys (not just the tech tubers but the lifestyle YouTubers etc too) is that they too readily become salespeople. Audiences tire of that. That they don’t use their influence / activate their audience to fund and produce their own films is telling. It seems they’d rather be YouTubers than filmmakers...
    1 point
  40. Oh, I agree, but I don’t think it will be in this format. This style is on its final legs IMO. Wide angle handheld, talking to the camera, padding run time to get to 10+ minutes. Audiences are slowly catching on to the runtime pads and are being turned off by it. Enough people leave and creators will go back to more condensed content or evolve to actually make meaningful 10+ minute videos.

    Lens owning plans for 2020

I was also waiting for the Viltrox trio on Fuji, but the first two get mixed reviews and all seem to suffer from CA, which is annoying for video and JPG shooting for me. Realised that the Fuji 27mm and 50mm are much better (and lighter) and f1.4 isn't essential. Currently travelling, so want to stay lightweight. May just get an L39 mount Canon 50mm f1.4 or f1.5 or Jupiter 50mm f1.5. The improved lens on the Fuji X100V and 4K video and other new features makes it very very tempting. Not sure about the overheating issue though.

  45. The likely reason is that Canon design and manufactures its own chips/electronics, and that its chip technology is old and not on the level of contemporary chip manufacturing of 14nm or less. Bigger structures/more nanometers mean: less power efficiency, more heat production. (That's why smartphones, using the latest and smallest chip technology, are so incredibly powerful at low electricity consumption and low heat dissipation.) Panasonic, as much bigger electronics manufacturer, has access to more modern chip technology. They likely also manufacture the electronics of the Sigma fp (since they also manufacture the electronics of Leica cameras, and since the fp uses a Panasonic battery). This is also the reason why Canon's self-manufactured sensor chip are behind in performance to Sony's.

  48. You literally have no idea what you're talking about! I've already answered all your questions but you keep flogging a dead horse. You must have very little experience of shooting interviews. I have used all sorts of cameras for all sorts of different jobs - from tiny client work to feature films to short docs for VICE - from crappy DSLR's to cinema cameras. Whatever the job calls for. That's why I know what is needed for interviews. If you are focussing on "what camera I use" and think that's what makes a filmmaker, that confirms your naivety. It's a problem with a lot of talk on this forum - confusing technical camera knowledge for filmmaking.

I quite like the look of Canon's older zooms... the original 24-105 F4L and the even more past it 28-80mm F2.8-4L Pop them on an X-T4 and you have the XC-10 look with bells on and better AF too But I miss the XC10's "inventive" form factor and small size, especially the lens - which was lovely to use mechanically speaking Maybe it is worth giving the XC-10 another go if I find it cheap
