  1. Look I'm not going to get personal here. I don't know the guy in real life. At the 1:10 mark: "Let me be clear on something. There is way too much speculation going around about an issue that doesn't actually exist (yet)". Really?! No. It's not speculation. 100% factual. Canon official test timing info. At 1:23 he whines: "None of the press has had a production camera. All the cameras are pre-production" Perhaps he can explain then why Canon went to all that trouble testing the pre-production camera to calculate overheating times and releasing them publicly if the problem suddenly won't exist by the time the final firmware is ready? Canon did all the testing on the beta firmware camera. Same hardware as Peter McKinnon was given and likely exact same firmware version. It's two weeks from shipping, the beta firmware is basically the final one. The hardware is final. The thermal design is final. Jared just doesn't get it. But then the whiney voice really ratchets up a notch because one of his viewers dared pointing out a fact or two! The viewer said "stop ignoring the overheating". "What I am ignoring?" he responds! "The document that is floating around purportedly from Canon?" Purportedly... I get it... Discredit the facts. Discredit the source. Heaven forbid - Don't mention the original source EOSHD, during the time all other major sites were stone dead silent on it. I am not finishing for credit. But again it illustrates the sheer cheek of it. Clearly I or CVP don't deserve an ounce of his publicity or thanks for expanding his knowledge and breaking the news first to his audience? And when you do simply add up what Polin has said, it absolutely stinks. Gloss over the fact the timings are legitimate. Imply they aren't even final. Imply the overheating is "speculation". Imply there may be zero wrong with the final camera. Say how great a stills camera it is. Claim abject poverty and that the video you're watching puts no money in his account. Say the actual overheating timings may not even be real! And then to top it all off... "If it is real, Canon are really honest!" The sheer fucking cheek of it. His viewers commented that he's "getting his bank account lit up for these videos". And of course he denies it. "I'm not getting paid by Canon..." What he forgot to add was "...this time" This is a guy who has no problems sitting on a beach in Hawaii for the EOS R launch, hotel and flight paid for by Canon. Of course he is getting his bank account lit from the videos. They are monetised. And the gist of the last 5 minuets if you can get that far is... Canon are honest! I am honest too! Now watch these YT ads and click these links so I can get even richer. 160k views on the overheating controversy and of course not a single mention of his original sources for the info. Not even the CVP video let alone EOSHD. I don't envy these creators. I don't get any satisfaction from being handed cameras for free or going on press controlled junkets. I make a good living off EOSHD and don't feel the need to have 160k views on each video. But if people wonder why I'm not championing the American YouTube Circle Jerk and chomping at the bit to join in, well... Here is exhibit B, out of 10,000.

  4. S35 sensor does go well in a M43 mount as JVC showed. Blackmagic have such great innards. It is time to step up the game and put them in a camera body worthy of the image, sensor, codec, and touchscreen UI. A $2500 Pocket camera with EVF and IBIS would be a roaring success.

  10. What I am really sad is that people on site like here (because believe me a lot of people are using the Z for video in Nikon groups etc) don't give a serious look at what Nikon is doing. As a d810, d750 to the D70 15 years ago user, the most enjoyable camera I have used are my 2 z6. As a hybrid shooter I can just flick a button and switch from video or photo mode. Now for me the z6 could have been a little bigger, double card slot and 4k 60p and 10 bit and log internal. The double card slot and 4k 60p seems to be coming in a next update about September, october. I would really really like a 10 bit and internal log, it would be a dream come true, but at least if it is not possible with current tech (look at overheating in R5 R6) you have the possibility to use the Ninja V. I mean if a z6 with a Ninja V is too big for anyone, I am out of breath. I mean it is smaller than using an entry level camera like the Nikon D3500 and a flash. And if you do any video seriouly that need 10 bit and Log you will have to carry tripods or Ronin etc. Now the good part, the z6 is the best experience shooting I have. I mean with the fantastic viewfinder, excellent IBIS, touch screen and best of all autofocus, I can shoot handheld like doing photos. For reportage style that I do for a well known worldwide broadcaster, it is a game changer. Doing B-rolls don't need to put on a tripod anymore. Except for very smooth pan or walking shot that I will use tripod, stabilizer or interview setup and higher end job. The auto-focus is super good and getting better with every extra firmware update. Last year when it was about buying a BM camera to compliment the z6 (60fps 4k and eventually raw) the auto-focus killed that though. This combined with slowmo 120fps at 1080p gives such good quality. That 120 fps is underrated, even if it 1080p it is still gorgeous. I would hope even a 4k 120 fps or even a crop or a 2,7k version, just to intercut it a bit closer to the 4k. Now it terms of usability, you have 3 U setting button that I configured to 24, 60 and 120 fps with all corresponding shutter speed. I would have liked for them to have included banks that I could choose because I live in a Pal country but shoot for an American one and also for creative job shoot at 24 fps. There are two user configurable button in the front and have configured on to swith from FX to DX mode and the other for changing focus mode. You also have a very nice rear touch LCD with rapid menu that you can also configure to your need. In the end the z6 is the most versatile and ergonomic camera I have ever use. I can change aperture, shutter speed and ISO just with my thumb and upper finger. Now there are things I have been experimenting lately with the the app, where I can sync timecode using the automatic time which uses gps etc, and rack focusing with it.

  14. Even though I had new lights delivered today, it’s been a bit of a shitty one. That made me happy, thank you! I just wanted to add that I’ve been told from a trusted source who I can’t identify, that this new Sony plays “What’s up Youtube” said in no apparent language at 6k 120fps as an audio LUT. Also this feature comes with an IBIS only 2k 480fps burst of synth pop audio soundtrack from Artlist, sponsored by Squarespace. There was mention of a crop mode featuring Gerald Undone who appears via micro HDMI and is baked in the image. It’s said to be a talking loop about beam angles on lighting fixtures and LUX at 1 metre with the Canon R5 when recording at 4k120fps for 15 minutes. The source is from YouTube and he talks about the growing Tim Apple tree in his garden rather than his experience of the camera. He has the fastest readout in the world when captured with big eyes and a large mouth on a rolling shutter sensor called Cinemartin Fran.

  15. What a strange headline. And how exactly did the EOS R and RP show culture and heritage? The Z line cameras trump Sony's in SOOC image. No they don't have internal LOG but they do have a dynamic range setting that works in video which gives plenty of DR while still retaining Nikon's superb colour science. In addition they have great feeling bodies and great ergonomic features such as the Stills/Video switch. Their IBIS and AF is also reliable. Their 1080p and 4k image are detailed and uncropped. What Nikon lacks really is focus. Why do some of their bodies have full flip out screens, some have just vertical tilts and some tilt 180 degrees down? Why do they keep releasing APS-C bodies but only ever release zoom lenses for them? Why did they go mirrorless and create a large diameter mount but then still make primes that are big and expensive (and ugly)? Why are they making a lower-end Z5 when that market is already flooded and they still lack native lenses?

  17. Its extraordinary how people are misinformed about Nikon. I mean is it perfect, no, but which 2k camera is. firstly about construction, the Z line construction is as good as it gets. Its not me or some anecdotal feeling but expert in camera construction. Many feel bigger is better, I myself find it to be a little small but in this world, doing a d850 size mirrorless is suicide. For me I have the smallrig cage permanently on now, it givesme a better overall grip and I prefer bigger cameras anyway, but I understand them with the Mirroless must be small Jihadist. This tells you how good it is constructed, there was a pro wildlife photographer that told about his experience in the artic where the D850 stopped working at extreme temperatures while his Z still worked until very very low. https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2018/10/teardown-of-the-nikon-z7-mirrorless-camera/

  18. To be serious for a moment, the amount of abuse that @Andrew Reid took from the shills, bootlickers, click merchants, grudge bearers and other assorted snide gobshites portraying him as being some sort of deranged bitter outlier who "You can always count on to be negative" for basically reading Canon's own words out to them was pathetic but very informative. I wouldn't hold out much hope of most of those people organising an apology pile on with the same gusto they organised an abuse one because, of course, thats not how they (t)roll but at least they've shown their hand about who they really are. I do hope it represents some sort of tipping point for the wider world in terms of the scales falling from their eyes about this sort of marketing though. In particular, I hope that if the R5 and R6 issues are improved or mitigated at launch or during its life cycle that people remember that the fire (ho ho) that was lit under Canon's arse to address this wasn't sparked by sycophancy.

  28. @Neumann Films a Reddit style AMA is a great idea for the forum. I'll do my best to answer what you guys asked above. We should do this with you Neumann some time too, and some camera companies. I have some interviews coming up on the blog. Sigma's CEO Kazuto Yamaki and the Sigma Fp product manager got a book-length of questions from me and are very kindly working on some answers! Fujifilm also in Japan. I think the camera companies are always shrouded in mystery so the more they talk to their users, the better. We can send our suggestions their way! @Neumann Films What art form interests you the most outside of film? Also...what is your favorite CURRENT local restaurant (no chains)? Music. I like how you can choose to be a solo artist or be in a group. Filmmakers don't quite have the same luxury if we want to make really good stuff 🙂 We need actors, writers, at the very least an interesting model or subject to shoot. Musicians just pick up an instrument, and write music. Also writing, I think that's fascinating as well. Whether it be fiction or writing down ideas, I think filmmakers who can do this well have a real advantage over the pack. Favourite restaurant in Berlin is the Japanese BBQ "Ushido" and back home in the UK there's a great one in Manchester with a cocktail bar, called "Room". @Itu did you attend any film school? Which one? Not really but went to university and made artistic video pieces, music videos and some short films (in the Mini DV era)! @Video Hummus having run EOSHD solo for so many years where you have routinely written about your frustrations over and over again about the same persistence and repeated short comings of every brands cameras, would you consider yourself a masochist? If not, what kind of mental health problem would you say you have? Addicted to buying new cameras. It is interesting to follow the flow of technology and innovation but with the camera industry being so dominated by the Japanese, I feel it could benefit from more multi-cultural ideas and designers. It's becoming a bit like the Japanese car industry where all the different models are homogeneous. Well done to Sigma for trying something different with the Fp! @Mr. Freeze 1. What moment/film was your motivation to pick up a Camera to create films? Koyaanisqatsi. Never seen reality in such poetic form, and the synthesis with the Philip Glass score, just amazing. But what's inspiring is it's basically one cinematographer and a camera, long, long takes. Each one hypnotic. No actors, no big crew, no writers, just the music and images. Hitchcock, now there is an inspiration too. 2. Being able to travel back in time, let´s say 1920-2000, what decade/year would you like to visit and film in? I think late 70's, early 80's. The auteur era in the US. And 60's France. I've heard many of the younger pros say Jurassic Park is the "classic" that inspired them to be a filmmaker. It's great fun, but popcorn fluff... How times, and people are changing.

  35. The footage looks really good indeed. But that latest official statement by Canon is a joke. Did they actually suggested to use an external fan? Lol. Now people are making jokes about wet towels wrapped around R5. They are aggressively marketing this body as an 8K camera for the past six months so it’s quite fair for anyone to expect, well… a camera. Great tool, bad marketing.

  38. To be honest, slowmo always gives a more cinematic feel, which is why it gets overused, and a cameras motion cadence isn't best judged on slowmo footage anyway, especially if shot at 120fps. I'd be intrigued to see 24p footage to see how well the camera performs there. Colours and skins tones are a given for a Canon camera at this price point. I'd be surprised if they were less than fantastic.

  39. Looks stunning to me as well. Interesting how it seems people on the internet these days get more frustrated when people saying something positive, rather than getting frustrated at people for saying something negative. Here, let me chime in - I don't give a shit what the weather is like. I don't give a shit what every other camera does. This particular footage looks "stunning" to me as well. The colors look fantastic, with great skin tones. It's not overly sharp like certain other cameras with a nice smooth/cinematic feel to the footage and it has great motion cadence. To my eyes, who has shot and watched thousands of clips from various manufacturer - it seems to hit above its weight class on just what I'm seeing in this video and the clips that I have downloaded. Super easy to grade and it looks very similar to my C200 files. I can appreciate the S1H AND Canon R5 or any other camera.

  40. That Canon has put out a "media alert" now on this says it all. All these times are based on a cold start at 23 degrees C (73f) Seems a wonderful stills camera with some highly desirable video specs and when it CAN record better than anything but will be useless for what many would WANT to use it for. It seems they want you to turn it off when not using it and have it in the shade with a fan on it in even mildly warm weather. It will not be the "star" sitting on the chair under the umbrella being fanned by some assistant but the camera.

Going back all the way to the move to Berlin 10 years ago, I started off with the intention to do commercial work with eventually building up enough contacts and money to film my own stuff. I did a bit of that but EOSHD became my main income, which I now use to make my own stuff happen. Not as often as I'd like at the moment, because of how much time is taken up by EOSHD! This year I planned to do some short films at motorsports events like Le Mans, The British Grand Prix at Silverstone and film the Goodwood Festival of speed. But the pandemic has seen a lot of people in the same position as me. Everything cancelled!
