New Blackmagic Announcement Soon?
kye and 4 others reacted to Neumann Films for a topic
I think people are missing some key things here. Built in ND, XLR audio, cheap media/accessories, 8K @ 110 fps and 4K at over 200 without cropping. Do you know how much of a breath of fresh air all of that is compared to RED cameras? You spend $30K on a RED only for it to show up with no AC power input, no audio ports and some of the worst looking slow motion at 4K that you can imagine. This is BM's move to break into a new market.5 points -

I'm in my early 40's and started solo shooting 20 years ago. No IBIS, No AF......you don't need these features to be a solo shooter. You need to take the time to master the craft better. Please don't take that as me saying you are no good or I am better than anyone else, because I still have a lot to learn myself but not having AF and IBIS shouldn't stop you from shooting quality footage. Plus, Solo shooters have sooooo many cameras to choose from these days if that's what you need. BMD are not a compact camera maker like Sony, Panasonic, Fuji etc. They are more comparable to other professional arms like Sony Professional. BMD make much much more than cameras and the consumer market is not really their thing. I'll admit, 12K is lost on me although I have worked on my fair share of productions where we have been shooting 4K for 9:16 output and have needed to shoot with the camera on it's side.....major PITA! With 12K at least, we won't need to do that. This camera is not for everyone, and that's ok. At $10,000 it's attainable to many freelance DP's and the same price as the FX9. Sure, the FX9 is full frame and that is super desirable right now, but currently, the FX9 can't do 4K50/60p in FF and that's a major drawback to many. If BMD are are showing off right now and that results in super speedy workflows, improved codecs, improved colour science trickling down for me using their cameras at 4K or 6K (advancements in BRAW will trickle down Grant said) then I'm OK with that.5 points -
The event is expected to last more than 20 mins. Just a heads up for any R5 shooters at the event.5 points

The megapixel race has come to cinema. $10,000 with an 80 megapixel Super 35mm sensor, the new URSA Mini Pro shoots 12K BRAW. The technology in this camera is practically unheard of.3 points -

The color separation is fantastic - distinctive browns. yellows and blacks which don't loose subtle color shifts from lighting even when crushed. I think there is something special going on here and I will love to hear from folks on how they feel it grades compared to other cameras.3 points

These days im not sure what the future of camera tech should be like. I dont even need 4k, sometimes I think ibis can come in handy, but then you see some wobbly images and I change my mind instantly. For cinema uses there isnt a need for more iso options iso 800 is great. I guess most cameras have decent DR nowadays. AF is cool for gimbal work and one man band kinda jobs, but for cinema it doesnt look it will ever come. The alexa does still looks the most amazing, and thats a 10 year old sensor. So maybe the future of filmmaking lies in the innovation of lighting. Aputure set a great example in modular lighting and arri followed suit. But I guess prices and current led tech isnt quite there yet for the masses.3 points -
Blackmagic are the crack dealers of the camera industry... have a taste of 4K BRaw at $1299... oh you like that... try this 6K BRaw for $2499... wait... since you're such a good customer... you can have it for $1999... Next thing you know, wedding videographers will be tweaking all over the dance floor... dreaming about how much they could crop into a 12K image to properly capture the snot from the bride's nose in a glorious 8K delivery...3 points
-
This would have been a mistake except for one thing: the ability to do 4K RAW on it makes it awesome and usable on most productions. 12K is there in case you need it.3 points
-
The most important thing is that apparently, it does not overheat and there is no need to wait for it to cool down, to continue using it.3 points

To be serious for a moment, the amount of abuse that @Andrew Reid took from the shills, bootlickers, click merchants, grudge bearers and other assorted snide gobshites portraying him as being some sort of deranged bitter outlier who "You can always count on to be negative" for basically reading Canon's own words out to them was pathetic but very informative. I wouldn't hold out much hope of most of those people organising an apology pile on with the same gusto they organised an abuse one because, of course, thats not how they (t)roll but at least they've shown their hand about who they really are. I do hope it represents some sort of tipping point for the wider world in terms of the scales falling from their eyes about this sort of marketing though. In particular, I hope that if the R5 and R6 issues are improved or mitigated at launch or during its life cycle that people remember that the fire (ho ho) that was lit under Canon's arse to address this wasn't sparked by sycophancy.3 points

Last comment, Iโm not mad I just want to make a point: Criticizing fellow creatives is rude, no matter what. I donโt care what you do for a living, it puts food on your table and provides for you and those you care about. Weddings? Great, pay them bills. Itโs better than most 9 to 5s and requires a lot of skill. YouTube shill? Fine, pay them bills. Itโs on us, the consumer, to do our own research and make the right buying decisions. What I donโt like is when someone mocks someone else for the work they do. It shows a lack of big picture awareness. Especially in 2020 man, everyone is scrambling.2 points -
I think it's time to stop, breathe and focus on the camera, if you don't like it, that's fine, but here we will have shooters from different areas, documentary, archive, advertising, weddings. Each one must have an opinion if it is useful according to their scope of action. You cannot pretend to impose your opinion on the rest.2 points

You seem to be the very definition of a fan boy. Someone who thinks their way is the only way. I see that this camera doesn't appeal to many here on EOSHD, but then why get so worked up about it? I don't go on a HipHop forum and get all fired up that the Foo Fighters latest album isn't Hip Hop do I?2 points -
I have no interest in 8K, let alone 12K. Still, if I was asked to shoot 8K, then this camera is probably the better alternative than struggling through the R5 overheating. Better frame rates as well makes it inheritantly more practical as well for a range of videos. Can't say I plan to pick up one unless all my Wedding couples suddenly get 8K TVs. But I'm still getting asked for DVDs, so I guess its not very likely. ๐๐ To be honest, I preferred the idea of a 6K fullframe Pocket upgrade, but I guess that's for another day. I'd be interested to see if the new colour science and BRAW improvements get passed down.2 points
-
Im not sure this is representative of the facts. The crop is only for the very high frame rates. For normal shooting, there is no crop at any resolution... As far as I understood anyway.2 points

So interviews are like running cheetahs or hopping gazelle, where focus keeps moving constantly across frames. No wonder, that, there were no interviews recorded until dual pixel and modern age PDAF sensor autofocus was invented. Would good autofocus have been nice? Absolutely. Will people not be able to shoot studio work without excellent autofocus? No.2 points

@SteveV4D 8K > 6K though. Seriously, it seems clear you have zero interest in the Rx series.. yet you keep talking up the P6K. An S35 cam with no AF, no IBIS, no stills functionality, poor battery life etc. I'm not shitting on the P6K but it is just not in the same category as the Canon R5 hybrid. No camera is really at the moment (although that may change come July 28th).2 points

I keep getting more and impressed by the actual image this camera is producing. I was kind of preparing to be "meh'd" by the footage, but the video quality looks fantastic in the few videos I have seen. The color science seems great and it seems to have a slight sharpness reduction which to me is fantastic - I hate overly sharp digital footage - i'm guessing this is due to the aa filter, similar to the S1H. It just slightly takes the edge off. I have said it before and I will say it again, it looks very similar to my C200 footage.2 points

Exactly. I don't like re-work or having to redo things. So if I travel somewhere or take time to set up a fun creative shoot...I'd like that to be "sellable" for as long as humanly possible.2 points -
It does a full sensor readout even in raw on the lower resolution, since it uses a full RGB pattern sensor, so basically you get insanely clean and sharp 8k, 6k, and 4k since they are all downsampled from the full 12k resolution.2 points

Exactly. It should make the camera relevant for years. 4K in 2020, 8K in 2022, and 12K whenever that comes. But honestly I see huge use for 12K capture of 4K stock footage.2 points -

I think this is a brilliant move by Blackmagic. 12K is overkill for now, sure. But, Grant explained how the camera can scale BRAW internally. So it's a great 4K camera in 2020, 8K camera in 2022, and 12K when you want to show off ๐2 points -

It is a good image. I think you would have to be a bit deluded not to think that. That was never gonna be the problem with this camera. With clog 3 it will punch above its weight-class in terms of image and resolution like the s1h. However, file sizes and codec is an issue for all these japanese cameras once we start getting into better quality codecs and higher frame rates. These companies are just too conservative to give us anything of worth or to innovate like braw. So they'll just give you bumps to the specs year on year, which is the name of the game. In terms of a pure hybrid camera, nothing beats the r5 at the moment, but the question is whether it is worth it price given it is in effect a 4k 30p camera, which can use other modes on a limited basis.2 points

Most recent manual focus full frame film below, tiny crew, basically one DP. I get what you're saying - AF makes things easily for a single operator. But there are now a number of very high profile feature films with a single camera operator (even Oscar nominated) shot on small manual focus cameras like the GH2, 5D 3, and in similar manner to Sigma Fp in Sin-sin for instance (GH2 sometimes at F0.95 no less). Not only are they artistically a successful cinematic achievement, the smaller camera and more direct hands-on control for the director and cinematographer was the primary reason for getting away from ARRI or a RED. AF also has a tendency to do what the machine wants, rather than the human. No AF is bullet proof. If it wonders off, that's the entire take ruined and you have to go again without any guarantees it will be better.2 points -

@Andrew Reid I read it. As a non native speaker and relative stranger to Toneh and Peter and other youtubers I didnt get it. I love your content much more than discussing the content of Toneh, Peter and the others too much. I appreciated your head articles about the heating issues and the PR stunts by youtubers. The Toneh one is too confusing and insider stuff for me. I didnt quiet get it. Like I said, I rather follow your editorials than these youtubers. Thanks for pointing out the issues and for showing the lack of logic of some of these sales persons! I would just not suggest to give them more attention than needed nor more forms of literal expressions. They donยดt provide enough fodder for an entire beautiful series of biting and entertaining satire. Your head articles before this Toneh piece were already perfect to me.2 points

To be fair, I was very appreciative of their sage advice in that video not to listen to the biased opinions of people with relationships with manufacturers and certainly not to trust early reviews from these people. Its almost like Canon never took them on a trip to Hawaii to see the EOS-R, gave them a FREE one to giveaway as a click and subscriber booster on their channel and put out a review so speedily it was actually shot in their paid for hotel room isn't it ?
