  1. Had a play at local camera store where they have R5/R6 to play The guy said R5 is the final production while their R6 is still pre-production one My u3 card last 4 seconds on 8kIBP, on 4k50p ibp it is fine , guess u really need UHS-II for All-I or 8K IBP. Auto focus is really good, can detect person's eye against the light (window) even though the person is really dark on the camera IBIS on the 85 DS is much more smoother than the A7R4 we had with us. I can definitely fake a few gimbal/slider shot with the R5/R6 vs with my R. R6 with the 24-105 7.1 focus quite fast inside the shop at 7.1 aperture. And after playing with 28-70 i m never gonna get this lens at all, it is just too heavy and big. The 70-200 2.8 RF is surprisingly light on the other hand.

  2. Surprised no one is talking about what the 12K BM cam means to S16 lenses. 6K S16 on a digital RGB sensor seems like a HUGE thing to me. The frame rates on the S16 crop are icing on the cake. There are a fair few S16 enthusiasts out there with a good selection of S16 PL mount lenses. Seems like this camera could be a game changer for them. Thoughts?

  3. He/She is angry that the 'RUMOURS' said that BMD would be releasing a camera with AF and IBIS, and this cinema camera doesn't have those features. Despite this, he/she keeps coming back to a thread about something he/she has zero interest to keep he/she's anger boiling. Makes a lot of sense right? To add to the confusion, many users of EOSHD and the owner of the site himself says they have every right to be angry because this is a forum for users of small DSLR like cameras and Solo shooters so AF and IBIS should be mandatory .......but then the forum owner continues to post news articles of cameras that don't appeal to his user base and the circe of anger just continues to go round and round.... I love it, it's hilarious!

  4. No worries. I apologize if I was being over sensitive. Actually, my best friend of 30 years died of complications of Covid-19. He was a filmmaker in the middle of pitching a film to Netflix when he contracted Covid, and he was also a film critic for Pop Matters. So honestly, when I read these arguments about stupid cameras, I kinda laugh it off now and wish I never got involved in those arguments in the past. Do I think 12K is silly... yes... but I'm still happy with my 1080p raw... so obviously I'm not the target consumer for this camera. I'm still trying to figure out what filmmaking is in today's world and without my friend, so I have little interest in arguing about politics or cameras. Live and let live... On a positive note, I'm in the middle of writing a script, for a short film, that can be shot during Covid and I'm hoping to shoot it by the end of the summer. I hope you and your loved ones are doing well. Please continue to be cautious, and safe!!!

  5. Your right. I should not have down-voted that comment. Did it because of hijodeibn's recent extremely negative posts in several threads on the 12K. I read his "forbidden word in this community (Ke** Ameri** Gre**)" as a way to start an argument in the thread. I'd much rather have a discussion, and my downvote was an inappropriate knee-jerk reaction. Hope to continue to see you in the forum.

  7. NEWS FLASH!! Someone is talking about camera overheating while not standing in rain / snow. I'm sick to death of the people who talk about camera overheating coming from countries where their summer is the same average temperature as the winter where I live. And I live in the cooler part of Australia. The reality of the world is that colder countries are more affluent, so that's where the technology is made, purchased, and generally used: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_and_wealth

  8. I have watched this conversation play out over all the Canon R5 and now BM 12K threads, where one side gets excited and says it's great for their use-case and the other side says its ridiculous because the use-case isn't common / it doesn't align with their experience / it's too expensive / the data rates are too high / etc. I think one thing is missing here, which is to talk about budget and the state of the art. The state of the art in cameras is actually quite limited, and there are very very many situations where you can't get more for your money even if you had it. Here's an example... I make home videos and I want a small setup that won't attract attention going into parks, museums, aquariums, etc, and I like IBIS. I use my GH5 for this, but it has limitations. I would like extra DR. I would like a 12-bit mode. I would like dual-ISO. I would like a bunch of things, but I can't have them. At any price. If I was a multi-millionaire, I still can't have them. Think of how many people lament the Canon offerings, and want a set of features that is not available in any Canon camera, regardless of price. Think of how many people would love the P4K or P6K or URSA but are put off by the reliability or QC. Hollywood has embraced the Alexa Mini form-factor because it is portable / flexible / light-weight to the point that it enables creativity that had not previously been possible with their heavier models. This is because none of the previous models offered the combination of features that the Mini offers. At any price. Big Hollywood productions don't care how much a camera costs, they rent for a very small percentage of their production costs. If a camera cost double and did the job then great. Triple? No problems. This is how I see the BM 12K and Canon R5 cameras, and many others. They offer a combination of features that previously could not be had at any price. So, if you own a collection of S16 lenses and want to shoot 6K or at high-framerates that was previously not available at any price then why is this so completely ridiculous a concept? I think that @JimJones enthusiasm might make it sound like the whole cinema world will implode because of this, but of course it won't, and neither did it implode when the BMPCC 2K first came out, but it sure imploded if you were a fan of tiny cameras and shooting with older lenses.

  9. Honestly they are the target audience. They are RED users that use the resolution heavily in their edits for cropping and zooming, also have been heavily critical of the RED ecosystem in the past. Big reasons they are switching: - In camera backup to 2 cards. - Ability to use common media instead of RED mags, which is HUGE for their storage costs. - Every editor in their office now has a fully featured copy of Resolve.

  11. Without details from Sigma, here's a quick look at perhaps making sense of footage shot with the new "none" profile, and how they could be used for internal raw monitoring. I grabbed the images from this page: https://blog.sigmaphoto.com/2020/the-sigma-fp-evolves-firmware-2-0-for-the-cinema-crowd/ I assumed they are linear 1.0 in a rec2020 type of gamut, but that they have had a rec709 curve applied. So I took them into Nuke in an ACES color managed script, and I inverted the rec709 curve so that they are again linear 1.0 gamma. I then transformed the rec2020 gamut to ACES. The default ACES rrt/odt film look is applied, and I rendered out jpegs in sRGB, which I'm attaching here. Of course the highlights are completely clipped, but the midtones can be useful for accurately exposing with a grey card. I'm not sure if they will display correctly in the browser window, but they look "correct" in Nuke. EDIT: they look too dark in a Chomium-based browser compared to Nuke, but it may be because my screen is currently set to P3D65. YMMV.

  12. Sorry to hear. How long have you had Hardcore DNA? There is a known batch with optical issues, more specifically not reaching infinity. Has been discussed a few times on Anamorphic Shooters facebook group. Best bet is to contact John and ask for replacement glass. Might be an issue though if you are not the first owner.

  14. and how do you know this??? I'll be using an FX9 on an upcoming production which is a 10k camera. I am sure there are a lot of other people on this forum that do a lot more video work than me. 10k isn't even very expensive for a production camera. Still unsure why you are upset that other people are excited about a camera announcement??

  15. Proof? And why do you care if others want to talk about it?

  16. There are a lot of people on this forum that work for production companies that use 10k plus cameras or rent 10k plus cameras for projects.... If you are not interested or excited about this release not sure why you'd bother commenting. Why do you want to police all of us on what we should or should not be interested in?

  17. What is really funny is that clearly those handling Canon marketing have not shot a proper Wedding. I assume these shots were staged. They use Weddings as an example of 8K then add a heating warning at the end that basically tells anyone who does shoot Weddings that 8K isn't a viable option. A lot of Wedding Ceremonys I have filmed have been longer than 30 minutes. I've shot some lasting 90 minutes in length. Sure, I'd like a World where I could shoot 8K, 12K at various frame rates, but its not here yet. Not would I trust 120fps 4K on even a vital confetti shot. As for using 12K video for a Wedding. Maybe, if the couple were paying me 12K, I'd do it. 🤣🤣 This BM 12K camera is a wonderful and powerful Production camera, and the R5 a wonderful Photographic tool with some powerful video specs for short bursts, but if I want to crop for 4K delivery and extract high quality stills for Weddings, I'd still be better off shooting the 6K on either the Pocket or the S1H. 8K or 12K isn't yet a viable option for my Business. Maybe someday....

  19. Sadly, I haven't actually used the ol' GH5 in a long time now. I need to get it out and shoot, perhaps even try to capture the comet? And no, I don't have an external recorder, always wanted one... Also sadly, I haven't actually performed any video work in quite a while now. Captures, nor editing. I used to use the GH5 to capture my neice's school events. This year was graduation for us, and due to the pandemic, not many events have taken place, and rightable so. I will break out this gear today...

  20. Exactly. Don't judge a book by its cover, right? He has a much bigger channel called "The healthy life". He's got several books on health and I can assure you he knows what he's talking about, probably much more than most doctors. I believe he made his first fortune in Hollywood, where he directed and shot a film... He's really not a person you can put into a box and just say who he is. At least, that's what I learned about him.

  21. I used to ignore Markus Pix if it came up in my YouTube suggestions simply because he looked like a grown up 1970's Californian boy pop star...but actually, he has a decent channel and some of his stuff is quite interesting. He sort of does his own thing and doesn't seem to be selling anything ie, no obvious agenda other than running his channel and having some fun doing it.

  23. 8k handheld samples from the same person that posted the woman on the beach at 120fps. I'm curious - to the people that say the footage looks bad - what are you shooting with? IMO motion and color are fabulous with lots of detail. I've gotten so used to Sony's motion from shooting it the last few years, seeing Canon's just looks so much better IMO - I hate to say it because its subjective bullshit (like calling something organic), but it looks "more filmic" haha. All of the daylight clips are really clean and the flame shot at 6400 doesn't look super noisy either. Cheers Chris

  24. In regards to BM’s new tech, and this not being a Bayer sensor, the numbers aren’t the same thing anymore. I believe we are in the presence of a major disruption to come. It’s obvious this is going to trickle down into BM’s new devices and will most likely force major players in the game to reassess the price of admission for quality cinematic images. Sorta reminds me of how one can create Grammy winning music on their laptop/tablet/phone.

  26. All cameras have some colour cast and not all colours can be perfectly represented by any of them. Unlike on 8-bit DSLR footage, on higher bit-depth cameras you can easily correct this with a colour checker, with almost no effect on the final footage (coming apart). Anyone who probably is unhappy with this footage hasn't seen Alexa footage. It is quite green. Anything wider then the rec709 standard (all log) spills into wider colours, maybe for the purpose of maintaining the wider dynamic range, that effect colours before it is corrected and turned into a narrower colour bandwidth. Some log profiles have sepia some have green casts. The Blackmagic lut didn't cater specifically for the generation 5. That doesn't mean it's bad. I am not sure any lut by itself, will be able to colour correct log 100% without tweaking the colours wheels or white balancing a little further.

  27. That setup is a little front-heavy. Personally, I like the one using a longer setup with a counterweight. The reason I like him most on Youtube is that he can actually afford most gear, but he gives his opinion on what he believes is the best; he's got quite a bit of experience in the industry, and finally he's not monetized because he doesn't need the money- you know he's not just feeding you a POS to make some cash. All the stuff he buys personally. If he doesn't like it, he gives it away. For example, he gave a GH5s to the Camera Conspiracies guy. Cool.

  28. Your general external scenes need motion. Like a lot of people moving in a scene, a tree in a breezy wind, water fountain in 1/3 of the frame. Artifacts will tend to show in the motions parts.

  29. I'm not saying that the US doesn't get hot, obviously it does. What I am saying is that camera overheating tests, both by manufacturers as well as bloggers / vloggers / news sites are typically done in very mild conditions, eg Canons official testing at 23 degrees. Here in Australia we keep our air-conditioning at 24 degrees, so their test isn't even an indicative test of using their cameras indoors - let alone outside! It's great to see someone who lives in a genuinely hot climate testing overheating - it's not a common thing to see.

  30. @Kisaha I guess if we can get a side-benefit from global warming then that's great, but I think on balance I'd rather it be the other way!!

  31. Quite true, but all of these are changing. I talked with my friend on Canada today, and they have had 3-4 heatwaves (35degree Celsious he mentioned) already, which is quite a normal temperature for a hot Greek summer, bot not so much for Quebec. Desertification is already one of the biggest issues in southern Europe (and Balkans, even Hungary declared some). Overheating of cameras will be a much more important factor the next few years. One of the reasons I stay true to my NX cameras. They have never - ever - oveheat and/or stopped recording. It would be a disaster here. I have seen a lot of comical/tragic fails with Sony cameras, and that is why I was so critical towards them all these years. I have so many stories to tell..

  35. I believe both sides can coexist and even complement each other. A diversity of POVs should not hurt. Why this must always tend to be polarized?! Revolutionary, your mileage may vary and that's not exactly a 16mm form factor at same time, all concur and don't exclude each other. Hard to get? : -)

  40. You're deflecting. Indeed they aren't all the same, but there's also a hell of a lot of difference between PLASTIC and MAGNESIUM ALLOY, and you made it real clear that you had no idea what the camera was even made out of before critiquing it for being "plastic" and suggesting they add $5000 to the price. So yeah, "dude," you were clearly talking out of your ass and won't even admit it.

  46. Its not about 12k its about getting really good 8k which is one of the first things mentioned in the Blackmagic announcement. RED has certainly thrived on the high resolution front. Forgetting about who uses 8k or who might use 12k lets look at what this camera actually offers for the price. 12k at 60fps 8k at 120fps 6k at 120fps 4k at 120fps 4k cropped at 220fps vs The RED helium 8k at 60 fps 6k at 75 fps 5k at 96 fps 4k at 120 fps 3k at 150 fps 2k at 240 fps Keep in mind all the lower resolutions on the RED are cropping in on the sensor, greatly limiting the usability. The RED S35 helium also costs $24,500 plus the cost of RED mags. We need to see the Dynamic range and low light performance coming out of the URSA 12K. If it keeps up with the helium in those two categories then it really will be something for RED to be afraid of IMHO. Lets also consider the amazing rolling shutter performance. Its less than half the price of a RED, with cheaper storage, and seems to just be a better camera in every way. So far Black magic really hasn't put anything out there that was this competitive. I think the Pocket 6k could have been very competitive but no one could really take it seriously with the weird ass "Pocket style" body. I am hearing great things about GEN 5 color science too. It sounds like the sort of brown muddy color issue is gone, greens are vibrant, and no more neon blue color clipping. Unfortunately the Resolve update with Gen 5 is only available for Mac right now.

  47. 12K is more a marketing meme for the camera. Its real point is that it doesn't have a 2x2 Bayer matrix (as in my avatar on the left), but a 3x3 RGB matrix where all three colors are equally present. That means you will be able to downsample the 12K sensor signal into a 4K signal with no color interpolation by binning 3x3 pixels into one pixel. That's the equivalent of a 3-chip camera or Foveon sensor. Clean 4K with 4:4:4 color sampling and zero debayering artefacts. That's the real point (and news) of this camera. 12K is just marketing fodder for bloggers and influencers.

  49. I have been experimenting for years with aspheric lens and other wide-angle attachments to get a wider FOV for my anamorphic lens and never had very good results. I'm happy to announce that if you are a proud owner of a Bolex 8/19/1.5x, this might be a solution you will like. I shot these yesterday. By my estimate it's a 15mm on MFT or 30mm FOV full frame. The pros are no diopters are needed and you can focus as close as 10 inches. The downside is duel focus which is very easy with this set up for me. I did have chromatic aberrations but that could have been polarizer. I need to check. It's a great solution for wide establishing shots, car shots or getting wide close ups. Only works with Bolex 8/19 an MFT users. 📷🙂 other

Trump. The one and only thing I've ever agreed with him on. Trade imbalance should be addressed by any and all administrations. However, two things: 1) His ham handed terms were so half-baked his trade war backfired, and 2) International trade is not supply-side economics. So how does Chinese trade address my comment, which was an inquiry from Mercer on how a Trump administration is/was affecting me?
